Americana Podcast explores the artists and ideas shaping American roots music, focusing this episode on the genre-defying Steve Poltz. Poltz is celebrated for his originality, blending tradition with unpredictability in a career that spans decades. Born in Nova Scotia and raised in Southern California, he first gained widespread attention as the co-writer of Jewel's hit You Were Meant for Me. However, his true impact lies in his continual reinvention and subversion of Americana norms. His work reflects the folk tradition's emphasis on storytelling and community, while also embracing humor, vulnerability, and improvisation. Poltz serves as a creative link between the West Coast's DIY folk-punk movement and the broader narrative tradition of American roots music. This episode examines how his artistic approach challenges expectations and keeps audiences engaged. Listeners are also invited to watch a live performance of You Were Meant for Me with the Robert Earl Keen Band on YouTube. Ashleigh Flynn is a long time Portland musician who was primarily a solo artist for much of her career. But that all changed in 2015 when a friend introduced her to Nancy Luca, who had an all-female cover band. She and Luca hit it off and drew other women into a new all-female band: Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters, an homage to Rosie the Riveter, the WWII-era icon of female power and can-do spirit. The band is celebrating 10 years of making Americana music that embraces joy and creativity as a facet of resistance with a new album called "Good Morning Sunshine,” which drops this week. The band will play a record release concert at Mississippi Studios in Portland on Saturday, April 5, before they hit the road on tour. Flynn joins us in studio with Luca and other members of the band to play a few songs and give us a sneak peek of the album.

We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2020 conversation with Lucinda Williams. ABOUT LUCINDA WILLIAMSOne of the most revered songwriters on the face of the earth, Lucinda Williams was once crowned “America's Best Songwriter” by People magazine. She first gained widespread attention after Mary Chapin Carpenter made her song “Passionate Kisses” a Top 5 hit, which earned Lucinda a Grammy award for Country Song of the Year. She went on to release a string of critically-acclaimed albums that garnered her a total of 15 Grammy nominations spanning the genres of rock, pop, country, folk, and Americana. One of the primary architects of the Americana genre, Lucinda has received more Americana Music Association award nominations than nearly any other artist, and she was the first female recipient of the AMA's Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. VH1 named her one of the 100 Greatest Women in Rock & Roll, while Rolling Stone named her among its 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. In addition to her own success as an artist with songs such as “I Just Wanted to See You So Bad,” “Right in Time,” “Essence,” “Righteously,” “Are You Alright,” “Come On,” and “Real Love,” the daughter of famed poet Miller Williams has also had her songs recorded by Tom Petty, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Patty Loveless, Bettye LaVette, and many others.

Rachael Sage sometimes seems like a force of nature. A distinctive and expressive artist, she could also be considered as one of the individuals at the forefront of the women's movement, having founded her own record label, MPress, being named a six-time Independent Music Award winner, as well as a John Lennon Contest Grand Prize winner. She's shared stages with an eclectic array of other artists, performed at the Edinburgh Fringe festival, SXSW, and toured internationally. Her brand of provocative alt-folk is both adventurous and appealing, as illustrated by the fact that her 2020 album Character brought her a charting single, "Blue Sky Days,” while her subsequent project, Poetica, found her fusing poetry, jazz, classical music and Americana in a way that brought to mind an unlikely alliance between Leonard Cohen and Laurie Anderson. Her most recent efforts, aptly titled Another Side, finds her toning down her quirkier qualities and aiming instead for a more melodic perspective, sharing a series of songs that are delicate and demure, yet uplifting and optimistic all at the same time. True to form, it shows Sage conveying the warmth and conviction that's so essential to her sound. Rachael spoke to Lee and Billy on My Backstage Pass and shared her thoughts on her new album, her output in general and what it means to be not only an exceptional artist but the head of a record label as well. Andrew Browning, a gritty, California-born singer-songwriter whose new album Love is a Beautiful Thing (out 11/22) digs deep into the messy, raw truths of love and human connection. This is a record that stands out for its emotional honesty and layered narratives. The singer-songwriter delves into the complexities of love with a sound that is distinctly Californian—dark, irreverent, and pulsing with raw rock energy. The title track captures the dualities of passion and heartache, offering a personal reckoning, while songs like “Rock n Roll Cocaine” and “Dirty Girl” channel the gritty, rebellious spirit of California's rock scene. Tracks like “San Fernando” and “Rose Avenue and Main Street” paint vivid, evocative pictures of life in the Golden State. This album embraces the imperfections of love—its highs, lows, and everything in between—brought to life with massive production, powerful vocals, and big rock endings that showcase both Browning's roots and his narrative depth. The milestone tenth studio album from folk-blues luminary Ruthie Foster, Mileage finds the singer-songwriter reflecting on a life that's been full of professional triumphs, courtesy of a musical journey that took a self-described “little Black girl with a guitar” from singing at churches in rural Texas to chalking up multiple Grammy nominations. With this album in particular, Ruthie shares a collection of songs that was inspired by heartfelt conversations with producer Tyler Bryant and Rebecca Lovell, Bryant's wife and one-half of the duo Larkin Poe. In that regard, Mileage was borne from a unique and very personal experience, one that found the music emerging organically and in ways that were both real and illuminating. The result is an album flush with creative synergy and symmetry, a snapshot of a career well spent.Consequently, Mileage also marks for a profound collaboration with the legendary Sun Records, one that allows Ruthie's narrative to intertwine with the legendary label's rich tapestry of musical history courtesy of a soul-stirring journey through America's musical heartland. In that regard, it's more than merely an album — rather, it's an invitation to take part in a conversation about memories, emotions, and shared humanity. Speaking with Lee and Billy, Ruthie describes the ways in which she was able to dig deep into her own life story and bring to life her dreams, desires and aspirations. With both verve and vulnerability, she shares her story. This unique tour allows them to travel around the country, with each day filled with tattooing and each night devoted to acoustic solo performances by Ben.The origins of the Bikeriders Tour date back to 2011, when Ben Nichols embarked on the first tour alone, riding his trusty ‘07 BMW R1200GS. Inspired by his love for both motorcycles and music, Ben decided to merge these interests into a distinctive tour experience. The following year, Oliver Peck, along with a few other tattoo artists, joined Ben on their Harleys, turning the tour into an annual tradition that blends artistry, camaraderie, and the open road. Each year, they carve out a week or two to embark on this journey, creating memorable experiences along the way.During the tour, Oliver Peck spends his days tattooing at local shops in each city they visit. His expertise and reputation as a top-tier tattoo artist draw in crowds eager to get inked by him. In the evenings, Ben Nichols takes the stage at nearby venues, delivering intimate acoustic solo shows that captivate audiences with his soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics. Oliver, serving as the host and MC, adds a layer of camaraderie and entertainment, making each night a unique experience for attendees. This year, the tour welcomes renowned Cleveland tattoo artist Greg Christian, adding even more talent and excitement to the lineup. With Christian's participation, the tour continues to evolve, offering fans and attendees an even richer experience. The Bikeriders Tour is not just about music and tattoos; it's also about giving back. Sponsors like Simpson Motorcycle Helmets and White Knuckler Brand knives have generously donated helmets and handmade knives for nightly raffles. The proceeds from these raffles are donated to American Core, a nonprofit organization dedicated to veterans' mental health. This philanthropic aspect adds a meaningful dimension to the tour, allowing fans to contribute to a worthy cause. The tour's name, Bikeriders, is derived from a Lucero song inspired by Danny Lyon's famous book of photographs from the 1960s. The book's vivid depiction of motorcycle culture inspired Ben to write the song, which in turn inspired the tour. Despite the years and miles, Ben still rides the same BMW R1200GS he started the tour with in 2011, symbolizing the enduring spirit and continuity of this unique journey. With its blend of music, motorcycles, tattoos, and good times, the Bikeriders Tour is a celebration of passion, friendship, and www.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. Nevertheless, after parting ways with the group in 2017 due to various personal and professional disagreements, he's managed to carve out a vigorous and varied solo career — one which includes an autobiography, a role as host of the Acoustic Traveller radio program on Sirius/XM, a notable contribution to pal Steve Martin's number one, Grammy-winning album The Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo, and his own series of solo albums. His allegiance to tradition and the music bred in America's heartland has always been foremost in his efforts, a fact that's never been more obvious than on his latest LP, The Newsman, a series of striking spoken word narratives with instrumental accompaniment. McEuen shares his thoughts on the project -- and his career in general -- with Lee and Billy courtesy of My Backstage Pass. This key-rrific episode of Join The Docs features the ever-curious Professor Jonathan Sackier flying solo, sitting down without his usual sidekick Doctor Nigel Guest who is taking his own medicine and having a holiday.. This time, he's joined by the legendary John Oates. Yes, you heard it right—John Oates, the moustached marvel from the iconic duo Hall & Oates. Not only is he in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but he's also a multi-talented musician, songwriter, and all-around cool guy. They sit down to talk all things music and medicine, with a hint of laughter. What sparks the conversation? Oates, dives straight into the nitty-gritty of his sixth solo album,  “Reunion." This isn't just any album. Inspired by a whirlwind of personal life events, "Reunion" is a rollercoaster of emotions, melodies, and collaborations with some of the music industry's finest. Oates regales us with tales of  jam sessions, spontaneous songwriting when the radar is alerted by life events - check out the story of a girl in cowboy boots and a pink tutu!At the heart of the episode, the emotional story behind the album's title track. Oates opens up about his ageing father, painting a vivid picture of a man who has seen it all and then some. The song is a poignant reflection on life's horizons, filled with realisations that hit harder than a double espresso on a Monday morning. Oates' storytelling is so vivid, you can almost see the twinkle in his father's eye and feel the weight of the years gone by.What's Oates' secret to maintaining his vocal health? John shares his secret weapons, gargling, humidity, yoga and not talking to our resident Professor!. And let's not forget the physical challenges he's faced—two rotator cuff surgeries, folks! Oates recounts the gruelling physical therapy sessions with a humour that makes you almost wish you were there, cheering him on from the sidelines. Hip Hop, Hooray!Wait a minuet!  Why is the healing power of music so important to Oates? To rap it up, Oates passionately discusses how strumming a guitar or belting out a tune can mend a broken spirit faster than any doctor-prescribed remedy. Oates means treble, emphasising the importance of physical therapy post-surgery, sharing anecdotes of his therapist who, according to Oates, has the hands of an angel and the motivational skills of a drill sergeant. He also tells us of the people he has  worked with, a veritable who's who of the music business. And talking of Who, his recent duet with Roger Daltrey was to help those living with teen cancer.—--DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed on Join the Docs are those of Dr. Nigel Guest, Jonathan Sackier and other people on our show. Welcome to Episode 14 of Roots Music Rambler! Join us – hosts Francesca Folinazzo (Frank) and Jason Falls (Falls) as we explore the real roots of the music we love. This week, the Patron Saint of the Dollar Store herself blesses us with her presence. S.G. Goodman joins the show to talk about her meteoric rise to prominence in the Americana music scene. The last 12-18 months have included her being named Americana Emerging Artist of the Year, releasing her second album to high acclaim, having Tyler Childers cover “Space and Time” on his Rustin' in the Rain album, then being asked to join him on stage at the Grand Ole Opry, then going on tour to open for Childers and Jason Isbell … WOW! Goodman sat in with Falls to talk about the rise, her background, the whole Tyler Childers evolution with Space and Time and a lot more. Frank and Falls also talk about the Jason Isbell-Amanda Shires divorce, The 2024 Grammys and more. Falls had a very pointed reaction to Taylor Swift's on-stage announcement of her new album much to his daughter's chagrin. Frank lamented the fact Childers's In Your Love video didn't win.  And, of course, both share their regular pickin' the grinnin' recommendations for new music. Today, we're diving into the rich tapestry of the extraordinary songwriter, Gretchen Peters. Growing up next to the legendary Greenwich Village folk scene, before moving to Colorado where she cut her teeth as a performer, and finally settling in Nashville at the height of the traditional country to pop country split in the 90's and early aughts. Peters' story is something that music journalists and authors could only dream of living. And during all this time, she has etched her name into the annals of American music history with her poignant lyrics and haunting melodies. In the early '90s, Peters released her debut album, 'The Secret of Life,' which quickly garnered attention for its lyrical depth and Peters' distinctive, emotive voice. Throughout her illustrious career, Peters has penned songs that resonate with a raw, emotional honesty and capture complexities of the human condition. Her songs have been cut by the likes of Martina McBride and Trisha Yearwood, and has been a longstanding advocate for musician's rights in an increasingly complicated industry that looks more and more like a battleground everyday. Having recently retired from touring, it's time to take stock of  Gretchen Peters' immeasurable impact on music. Her dedication to storytelling has earned her a place among the most revered songwriters of our time. So join us today as we speak with Gretchen Peters about her serendipitous career, women's music in country and Americana, and whether or not there really is a difference between being a songwriter and being a performer.

What is Americana music? Is it a genre? A community? A refuge? Twenty four years after the founding of the Americana Music Association and thirteen years since the first Grammy was awarded for Best Americana Album, defining “Americana” remains tricky. In our experience, the most common answer has been “you know it when you hear it.”   However you define it, however, there is one thing everyone agrees on: Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell are Americana legends.   In this episode, recorded in front of a live audience in Nashville, TN, Emmylou and Rodney discuss their musical careers, how they became associated with Americana music, and what Americana means to them. Bob too shares his musical journey both before and after joining the Avett Brothers and the ways that genre (Americana and otherwise) has been part of that story.   Bob, Gary and I would like to thank Paul Lohr at New Frontier Touring for helping us get such incredible guests for the show, Adam Botner at Riverside Revival for making both the live show and the audio on this episode sound so good, Austin Sawyer of Drumming Bird & Annie DiRusso for opening the show with their incredible talent, and everyone who came out to make this such a special night.   We'd also like to give a special thanks to Jefferson Cowie for helping us prepare for the show.   This episode was edited by Gary Fletcher. Live audio recording and mixing by Adam Botner.

Hailing from the foothills of the North Georgia Appalachian Mountains, Charlsey Etheridge's roots in Americana Music run deep. There she learned to sing harmony around her grandmother's piano after church on Sundays and taught herself guitar chords from her mother's old Emmylou Harris songbook. She wrote her first song at the young age of 7 while riding through the woods in her step-father's old army jeep. After moving to Nashville in 2003, Charlsey was immersed into the Nashville songwriting culture, working alongside such music industry veterans as Harley Allen and Steve Wariner. “Even though Harley is no longer with us, I am often reminded of an invaluable piece of advice he left me,” Etheridge reflects. “He said, ‘just remember... fame will come and go... but you can ALWAYS write.' As a young 23 year old, I didn't think much of that statement at the time, but through the years, his words resonate with me more and more.” In 2013, Etheridge released her first full-length studio album, appropriately titled, Memories of Mine. The critically acclaimed record intimately paid homage to the sounds of her youth, exploring the Bluegrass, Gospel, and old Folk songs her grandmother used to sing to her. Memories received stellar reviews in such bluegrass and roots music publications as No Depression and The Bluegrass Situation. The 2013 album set the stage for Charlsey's future success in Americana and Roots music. In 2021, Etheridge collaborated with legendary guitarist Jack Pearson (of Allmon Brothers Band fame) to release a previously recorded, newly mastered five-song EP, An Acoustic Christmas with Charlsey and Jack. The holiday album blends Jack's lyrical musicality and lightning-precise fingerwork and with Charlsey's butter-smooth voice in a not-to-be-forgotten compilation of holiday favorites. Now, nearly 8 years after her first studio album, Charlsey is releasing a compilation of original music, entitled Scars of Mine. She has joined forces with MuzikMafia veteran, Jerry Navarro (Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson), who is also the founder of the new Indy label, The Frequency Spot (of which Etheridge is also an active artist). Joining Charlsey in this collaboration are band members Marcus Finnie (Lady A, Keb Mo, Taj Mahal), Walt Scott, Chris Walters (Barbara Mandrell), and Pat Bergeson (Suzy Bogguss, Lyle Lovett, Chet Atkins). The project is co-produced by sought after guitarist and musician, Pat Bergeson. Scars of Mine is slated for release in 2023. www.charlseyetheridge.com © 2023 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Management Representation: Chuck Thompson for Thompson Entertainment Group, LLC Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside what could be an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (Man we sure do miss Noshville, and the Longhorn Steakhouse) Mixed and Mastered at Music Dog Studios in Nashville, TN Editing and Post at Midnight Express Studio located in Olian, NY Production Sound Design: Keith Stark Voice Over and Promo: Lisa Fuson Special Thanks to the creator and founder of the podcast, Tom Sabella, along with Traci Snow for producing and hosting over 100 episodes of the original "Business Side of Music" podcast and trusting us to carry on their legacy. The Newport Folk Festival vibe is in full-effect as I swing into the third segment of this illuminating five-part in-person interview series, this time around featuring five dynamic artists from the worlds of Folk, Americana, Roots and Country and each one performing for the first time at Newport Folk. Join me, Josh Rosenberg, as I talk to Jaime Wyatt about how being super comfortable in her own skin has transformed her life; and she's on a roll now with a new album, Feel Good, coming out November 3. I'll also have a mellow chat with Abraham Alexander who has an amazing -- and at times sadly tragic -- story which he recounts to me and has documented in his wonderful debut album SEA/SONS.  In the third slot, I have a simply delightful and fun convo with rising star and all-around great hang, Raye Zaragoza, whose strong spirit embodies a sense of openness and inclusivity, paving her way as an advocate for Women's Rights and greater representation for People of Color.  And to round out this amazing episode, I talk to Aaron Vance and Tylar Bryant, who are part of the Black Opry collective and talk to me about their lifelong devotion to Country music and how Black Opry gave them opportunities they didn't think were possible for young black artists searching for inspiration. This is truly a wonderful collection of unique and talented artists and I'm here to give you all the interviews direct from Newport Folk!! Americana music encompasses country, bluegrass, folk, and blues and has deep roots in Black musical traditions.Long before Lil Nas X pushed the boundaries of what constitutes country music, Black musicians across Americana were reclaiming space in the genre. Many of those musicians found celebration and support in the Black Opry, a collective of Black artists that perform Americana music, founded online by Holly G in Nashville. This year, the Black Opry partnered up with WXPN to launch the Black Opry Residency, a weeklong program that provides resources and support for unsigned Black Americana musicians. We explore how and why the residency program came to be and what it means for the future of Black Americana musicians. This is a part of our series called "Local Spotlight," where we'll cover local stories that deserve national attention.
