Zeilke, a writer, music video producer, and most of all, a cowboy. JB has cowboyed on six continents and written about it in The Lost Cowboy. This book, with a drawing of a cowboy riding a bucking reindeer on the cover,  recently one two Spur awards, prizes given out by Western Writers of America. He won the Best Contemporary Non Fiction and Best First Non Fiction Book. Find him on Instagram at the.lost.cowboy! He had returned from the awards ceremony in Tulsa, Oklahoma when I talked to him last week. I was so pleased to talk with J.B. but decided to leave the details of his trips for listeners to check out on their own. So, yes, please check it out. You can find it on The Lost Cowboy.com and on Amazon. Read about his making connections, meeting folks, dodging bullets, and trying to get along in Australia, South Africa, Sweden, Argentina, Mexico, and Mongolia. Great stuff!  I thought listeners would love to hear what JB has learned over his many years of travel, specifically things that apply to horsemanship, riding, and partnership building. He does a great job of articulating some essential elements of the horse – rider connection, things he found somewhat universal, across the contients. It's a delightful interview that I'm happy to share. This week I'm welcoming Author Brad Smith to Fika with Vicky. We'll be looking into two of his crime fiction novels Copperhead Road and The Goliath Run. Copperhead Road was a Dashiell Hammett Prize Finalist.  Fast paced and gritty, these are two very different works. And yet, there's something that binds them together. Please join us as we explore that connection and more.  About Copperhead Road:  Summer 1936, Wilkes County, North Carolina during the great depression. The Flagg family resides in the middle of the Appalachia – one of the hardest hit areas in the country. As the depression drags on the Flag family watch their molasses business decimated. Jedediah, the family patriarch and his sons Morgan andEzra struggle to produce a few meager gallons a week. That is until their sister Ava arrives home and takes control of the family business and starts running moonshine. Ava bails out ex-con Bobby Barlow and tells him he is working for the Flagg family now. With threats mounting from rival clans and the local cops breathing down Bobby's neck, he and Ava devise a plan to play them all, one against the other. They don't necessarily do it by legal means but that doesn't bother them. To live outside the law, you must be honest. About The Goliath Run: When a deranged loner kills twenty-six people in a Pennsylvania schoolyard, the country is stunned and devastated. Among those catatonic with grief is Jo Matheson, an organic farmer who has lost her goddaughter in the shooting. Sam Jackson, an egotistical right-wing TV talking head, has sliding ratings and faces imminent cancellation. He arrives in Pennsylvania and during a rant, he blames the parents of the dead children. He intends the tirade to be his last salvo but, incredibly, his ratings climb, while Jo watches from her farmhouse in upstate New York, incensed. Sam rides the wave, shouting that it's time to take the country back from the left-wing weaklings who don't have the courage to protect their children. When he is asked to run for Congress, he accepts and amplifies his message. Watching these developments in horror, Jo finally decides that there actually is something she can do. She kidnaps Sam's ten-year-old daughter. About Brad:  Internationally acclaimed novelist and screenwriter Brad Smith is the author of 14 novels to date, including THE RETURN OF KID COOPER, winner of the 2019 SPUR AWARD from the Western Writers of America, ONE-EYED JACKS and COPPERHEAD ROAD, both short-listed for the Dashiell Hammett Award, and ALL HAT, adapted to a feature film which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, starring Luke Kirby, Rachael Leigh Cooke and Keith Carradine. He still misses those musty cards that he used to browse as he researched assignments as a student in Philadelphia's public schools. In high school, his favorite class was chemistry, and that's what he thought he would study, but then he found cognitive psychology at Swarthmore College. In the Peace Corps in Kenya, Dan taught high school physics, biology, and world history in a remote village. Living close to Mount Kilimanjaro, walking by anthills as tall as people, and seeing snakes, hippos, and other wildlife, gave him an intense curiosity about the natural world. He returned to Philadelphia to take a job developing exhibits and videos at the Franklin Institute Science Museum. That led to an interest in documentary filmmaking. After getting an MFA, Dan moved to Boston and started his career writing, producing, and directing documentaries for Discovery, Science, National Geographic, History, HHMI (Howard Hughes Medical Institute), and others. His productions include films on dinosaurs; how Galileo, Newton, Einstein, and Hawking made their greatest discoveries; the archeology of Custer's Last Stand; and scientists' efforts to uncover the cause of Malaysia's Nipah virus. His work has received numerous awards including two Cine-Golden Eagles, Emmy award nominations, and the coveted Spur Award for script writing from the Western Writers of America. He considers himself lucky that his career combines science, history, and writing, all of which he loves. He lives in Cambridge with his other loves: his wife, two kids, and their dog, Maxwell Smart.Website: https://danlevitt.com/www.GaryScottThomas.com

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Roy Rogers & Dale Evans' Granddaughter, Julie Rogers Pomilia, Author, “Your Heroes My Grandparents” About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Julie Rogers Pomilia, is the granddaughter of one of the most beloved couples in the history of show business – the King and Queen of the Westerns, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.    They co-starred in 88 movies.  They had a radio show for 9 years, and starting in the 50's, they were on TV almost continuously, starting with the Roy Rogers Show, the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Show, Happy Trails Theatre, and they appeared in dozens of variety and talk shows and award shows throughout their lives.  They recorded over 400 songs and sold millions of records.   Roy Rogers was the #1 Western box office star for 11 years in a row, from 1943 to 1954.  He has FOUR stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, for his contribution to TV, radio, music and the movies.  And he's the only performer to have been inducted TWICE into the Country Music Hall of Fame, once as part of the Sons of the Pioneers, and the 2nd time as an individual performer.  He was so incredibly popular back in the 50s and 60s, that there were over 400 toys and merchandising items with Roy Rogers' name on them.   There was even a chain of Roy Rogers Restaurants.   And Dale Evans was an immensely successful star in her own right.  She wrote their iconic theme song, “Happy Trails”, which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008, and was named one of the top 100 western songs of all time by the Western Writers of America.   And get this:  Dale Evans also wrote the classic Sunday School song, “The Bible Tells Me So”.  She also wrote 29 books, including her mega-best seller, “Angel Unaware”, inspired by their child Robin, who was born with Down Syndrome, and who died 2 days before her 2nd birthday.   Dale Evans has 2 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, for her work in movies and on television.   Although WE knew Roy Rogers and Dale Evans as the King and Queen of the Westerns, our guest knew them as simply, Grandma and Grandpa.   She's just released a wonderful, heartwarming book entitled, “Your Heroes, My Grandparents: A Granddaughter's Love.”  The book gives us an intimate look at who Roy Rogers and Dale Evans really were, not only as superstars, but especially as devoted partners, parents of 9 children, and grandparents of 16 children.    Our guest is an elementary school teacher who's spent the last 20 years travelling across the country, to western festivals, fairs and rodeos, to sing, tell stories, sit on panels, ride in parades, and meet with fans to honour and celebrate the legacy of her beloved grandparents and keep their memory alive.  She and her 2 sisters sang and performed around the country in a group called “The Rogers Legacy”, and she co-hosted a popular radio show called “Around the Barn”.  And she and her husband Gino run the Gino Pomilia Baseball Camp every summer in Larkspur, California.    And for many years she's ridden horseback in the Pasadena Rose Parade on New Year's Day. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Julie Rogers Pomilia, go to:https://www.facebook.com/jammyprod/https://www.instagram.com/jammyprod/https://www.tiktok.com/@jammyprod #JulieRogersPomilia  #harveybrownstoneinterviews
