On this episode, host Sarah Burke sits down with Saroya Tinker with a live audience at the Queen Street Knix Store in Toronto, in partnership with Monday Girl. Saroya Tinker is a former professional hockey player who recently transitioned to join the Professional Women's Hockey League's broadcasting team, both on panel and color commentary. She is also the league's Manager of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and Community Initiatives.  Sarah and Saroya discuss the progress the PWHL has made in providing living wages and full-time opportunities for women in hockey. She shares her personal journey of retiring from playing to focus on her role as a PWHL broadcaster and the league's advocacy work. Saroya opens up about the challenges she faced as a Black woman in hockey and the importance of representation, leading her to her work with Black Girl Hockey Club and mentoring the next generation. The conversation also touches on Saroy's self-care practices, her interests outside of hockey, and her vision for the future of women's sports, highlighting the need for continued collaboration and progress. More about Saroya Tinker: Tinker was a Yale University Women's Hockey Team member before graduating with a degree in History of Science, Medicine, and Public Health. She was drafted fourth overall to the Metropolitan Riveters in 2020 before joining the Toronto Six in 2021. In the 2022-23 PHF season, Saroya was named a PHF All-Star and the Toronto Six won the 2023 Isobel Cup. Tinker runs Saroya Strong, a mentorship program for young Black women in sports. She is also the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Black Girl Hockey Club Canada, a nonprofit organization that advocates for Black Women in ice hockey. In 2022, Saroya was part of Front Office Sports' Rising 25 Class, named one of Sportsnet's Top-25 Women in Hockey, and won the PHF's Denna Laing Award, awarded to “the player most actively applying the core values of hockey to her community as well as growing and improving hockey culture.” She also won the TIFF People's Choice Award for Uninterrupted Canada's Black Ice. Saroya is one of the faces of diversity and inclusion in hockey - she is continuously pushing the boundaries of the sport and improving it for the next generation of players. In the fall, Breaking Down Barriers, a docuseries showcasing stories of diversity in hockey, premiered on TSN. Saroya is the host, writer, and executive producer. Actor and former athlete Harrison Browne reunites with Eric Bizzarri after two years in studio. Eric produced the Feature Film On the Fringe of Wild, with Harrison in the lead role. The film completed production March 14, 2020. The two discuss the unique experience of moving into isolation immediately after being surrounded by a large cast and crew each day. Harrison is the first transgender athlete in professional hockey, having been a part of the National Women's Hockey League and winning championships for the Metropolitan Riveters and Buffalo Beauts. As a trailblazer and pioneer for LGBTQ rights, Harrison discusses avoiding being labelled as a "poster child" for transgender rights and freedoms, but rather an activist for these segregations, as well as creating his own approvals and spaces to feel accepted in by pursuing projects and people he loves. Towards acting, he's always tackling imposter syndrome and the drive to "book the gig."

She wishes the members of the Players' Association all the very best for the future.  In this episode of Your Potential for Everything, host Alex brings on Allie Olnowich a member of the Metropolitan Riveters of the Premier Hockey Federation. They discuss Allie's slow burn success in ice hockey, her love of pickleball, and her desire to attend law school so she can advocate for professional athletes. Allie's hockey journey wasn't typical, she didn't thrill on the ice when she first started in college and didn't get her first goal until her Sophomore season. She played with talented players who had a different skillset than her and learned that the only thing she could control was her effort and attitude. This served her well and she went on to play professional hockey as a practice squad player which she parlayed into a full-time roster spot. Her talents don't stop when she gets off the ice, Allie also has a goal to attend law school. She has applied and even been accepted to some schools. Not only does she want to be a good teammate on the ice, she wants to be able to step off the ice and advocate for her teammates through a legal capacity. When she isn't practicing or studying, she bonds with her mother over a good game of pickleball. We are into December and things are heating up around hockey in many ways and fashions.  This week we start with another issue with racism against a 16 year old, Mark Connors in P.E.I.  We identify the NHL's marketing problem and we talk about Mikyla Grant-Mentis who has made the Forbes 30 under 30 list of sports figures.  Northeastern University hockey is successful, but not just for the men.  Dean Evason should be getting an extension, so we break down why.  Jake DeBrusk has asked to be traded out of Boston and we talk about why.  Colleen Murphy has re-signed with the Metropolitan Riveters, the first time in her career that she will be staying with the same team.  Finally, we talk about the ludicrous behavior of yet another member of the Lemieux family.  This time it's Brandon, biting Brady Tkachuk.  All this and the Arizona Coyotes moving (not) and Evander Kane going to the minors.  Lots to form opinions about so give a listen, tell us what you think and Enjoy the Show!

Today's episode is all about breaking barriers—paving a path when no one has gone before you. We address: What it was like growing up as the “token female” in hockey games Traits of the most successful coaches in sports How women can strive for success in an arena without a role model to follow Kelsey's coaching philosophy and the legacy she wants to leave The progress of gender equality in collegiate and professional sports so far Today, Karen speaks with Kelsey Koelzer, the first black and the first female coach of an NCAA hockey team. She will be starting the inaugural season in the Fall of 2021 at Arcadia University. 3 MAJOR POINTS DISCUSSED The number one trait of a successful sports coach is their ability to communicate. Whether they are a man or a woman, the best coaches are those who can forge the best bonds with their players, and this starts with their communication skills. If you don't have a role model to follow, have an ideal level of skill to strive for. Kelsey had no female role model to look to when she began her career in ice hockey. However, what helped her stay on track and motivated to move forward was that she knew the type of athlete she wanted to be. She knew what it took to stand out in her sport, and she trained the specific skills that it would take for her to do just that. When looking to leave a lasting legacy, focus on the small steps. There is a lot of work left to do when it comes to gender equality in collegiate and professional sports, and it is right to acknowledge that. However, the best thing that anybody can do to make progress is to take every win that comes—big and small—and soldier on with the little things they can do to create even more change. For Kelsey, her sole focus today is to create a great program and be the best NCAA hockey coach she can be. RESOURCES Kelsey Koelzer on Instagram Kelsey Koelzer on Twitter Kelsey Koelzer is an American ice hockey defender, currently serving as head coach of the Arcadia University women's ice hockey program, the first black female head coach in NCAA ice hockey history, as well as the Advisor to the Commissioner on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the NWHL.   She was drafted 1st overall by the Metropolitan Riveters in the 2016 NWHL Draft, the first black player to be the first overall pick in a professional North American hockey league draft. She played two seasons in the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) with the Riveters before joining the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association (PWHPA) in 2019.   Karen Morales is founder and brand champion at Marketing Magnet. In this episode of The End of Sport, Derek and Johanna are joined by USA Today's For The Win editor and columnist Hemal Jhaveri and Natalie Weiner, weekly columnist of Good Form on Fanbyte, to discuss everything that went down over the past week in Women's hockey. More specifically, the episode provides a deep dive into what happened with the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL), Barst**l Sports CEO Erica Nardini and the mass of online trolls, and the critique launched at Nardini and others from Metropolitan Riveters defender Saroya Tinker. After describing what happened last week, the four talk about Natalie's piece in Fanbyte and Hemal's analysis in For The Win, and highlight how it reflects a broader issues of systemic racism, patriarchy, privilege and power, and how people at Barst**l perfectly encapsulate the form of what Nancy Leong calls “identity capitalists” – powerful insiders who eke out social and economic value from Black, Indigenous, and people of color, women, LGBTQI+ folks, the poor, and other marginalized groups. Following our discussion of the hypocrisy and paradoxical logic put forth by representatives of Barst**l in their protection of their CEO (by targeting players in the NWHL and, more specifically, athletes like Saroya Tinker), the four chat about how the events of the past week are reflective of much broader systemic issues that move beyond the NWHL and hockey culture in general. Finally, Johanna probes the rest to think about how we might apply Natalie's critique of the “girlboss” mentality to another realm of exclusion in sport – the transphobic rhetoric we are seeing emerge in sports like Swimming targeting Biden's Executive Order on Preventing and Combating Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity or Sexual Orientation (for some MUCH NEEDED background and analysis on this see Britni De La Cretaz brilliant piece for Refinery29).   Hemal's piece in For the Win: “The NWHL has a Barstool problem, and it can no longer look away” Natalie's piece for Fanbyte:  “The Double-Edged Sword of ‘Women's Empowerment.” You can follow Hemal and Natalie on Twitter!     For a transcription of this episode, please click here. (Updated semi-regularly Credit @punkademic) Research Assistance for The End of Sport provided by Abigail Bomba. __________________________________________________________________________ If you are interested you can support the show via our Patreon.
