If I mentioned the name Paul Marcarelli – would you have any idea who I am talking about? What if I said “Can you hear me now? Good.” You would likely say “Hey, it’s the Verizon guy…”. Robert Gignac wants you to know that you are capable of creating the financial future you desire. But you can't create a financial future if you don't know anything about your financial present. 17 years ago, Robert lost his job in IT and realized he was actually doing ok financially. Sure, the money he had accumulated wouldn't last forever, but as long as he generated some income to fill in the gaps along the way, he would be fine. Robert only knew this because he had a financial plan in place. If you are laid off and don't have a financial plan, the only thing you can do is wonder if you're going to be ok. You might get stressed out looking for a new job and panic if you don't find one right away. With a long-term financial plan, you don't have to wonder. You'll know if you're ok or not. But this personal finance stuff is really dull so Robert decided to write a book called Rich Is a State of Mind, to try to convince Canadians that taking control of your money is easier than they might think. A highly sought-after speaker, Robert delivers dynamic keynote speeches and interactive workshop programs to International organizations, financial industry conferences and private clients. He also has a podcast called Money, Motivation and More and a TV show called We Talk Money. Robert joined me in the studio to tell his personal finance story. NEXT EPISODE 56 - Danielle Alexandria

What causes us to spend beyond our means? While in some cases it's the result of a job loss or illness, in other situations, it's the Diderot Effect at play. The Diderot Effect is a social phenomenon where the introduction of a new possession that deviates from what you currently own leads to a spiral of even more consumption. For example, when you buy a new house, you don't just settle for the home. You now have to have new furniture, maybe a new deck, and so on. This creates a cycle of spending and leads to debt. How do we, then, prevent ourselves from becoming a victim of this effect? How do we control a spending spiral? My guest today suggests thinking critically about what we see on social media and on television is a great place to start. Robert Gignac works on behalf of advisors and financial professionals to help their clients better understand money management. He's also the author of Rich is a State of Mind: Building Wealth and Happiness: A Blueprint. In his experience, ordinary people become victim of the Diderot Effect because of the deceptive nature of social and digital media: The real world does not exist on Facebook or on Instagram. What that is, is everybody's pictures of their best day all the time. And none of those social networks really show us what's happening in those people's lives when it's not on their best day, when they're lying awake at 3 in the morning because the Visa bill's due and the Visa bill's $1,700 more than they've got allowable to pay it on that given day. He believes that in our attempt to keep up in large part due to our fear of missing out, we go beyond our financial means. In addition, once we've set a new and higher standard of living for ourselves, it's very hard to go back down.

There’s a reason Cash Flow Diary podcast guest Robert Gignac is highly sought as a speaker. He tells us that Rich is a State of Mind! In fact, he wrote the book on that topic. (It happens to be the title of his book, too.) This former computer geek, who grew bored with doing what he was doing, decided he needed to do something completely different. As the universe would have it, he got the opportunity to take a new path. In fact, the universe booted him into action. He just wasn’t sure what that would be yet. The next step was to meet with his financial advisor who suggested he write a book about something Robert knew pretty well, which was the basics of personal finance and financial responsibility. After having a chuckle, he left his advisor’s office and started writing the book that has now sold more than 50,000 copies across multiple countries. What he shares in his book resonates with readers because he states concepts in an easy-to-understand way that is also easy to embrace. Today Robert combines knowledge, passion and visuals to encourage people to take control of their personal finances to have a “Richly Imagined Future.” Robert’s presentations aren’t just about money. By taking the intimidation and dryness out of financial planning, he illustrates the importance of perspective, looking at the horizons and facing challenges in ways that hit readers far and wide in the gut. On stage, Robert paints a picture for audiences that simply make common sense. When asked how he arrived at his understanding of handling his money, Robert says it was through trial and error to get things right. Refreshingly he admits that he has done “dumb things with his money and still does dumb things once in a while.” The difference is that today he knows it rather immediately. Now he helps others avoid those dumb things! Robert’s is a simple plan. The approach will vary person to person, but there are shared behavioral issues in WHY we spend money that we shouldn’t. For example, we FEEL like if we spend some money it will make us feel better about an issue in our life that isn’t making us feel good. Robert says it is self-medicating in a way, and it doesn’t really help us to resolve the issue. In fact, the spending typically makes matters worse. One of the first things we need to do to conquer our money woes is to change our behaviors and mindset around money. We have to stop looking at wealth as something achieved through ill-gotten gains. And we have to stop looking at the neighbors who have the expensive car and huge home as having the answers when in fact those individuals could be financially leveraged to the max and living pretty close to the bone. By living more frugally and below our means today we are doing ourselves a long-term favor far into the future. Robert suggests taking a deep, hard look at your finances and life, asking what are you happy and unhappy with in your life. Then change those things that aren’t benefitting you. There’s more to getting your finances in order, but that’s what you’ll learn by listening to this common-sense interview. Robert even gives some excellent cost-cutter strategies. Learn more.

If we are going to achieve our goals, enrich our lives, and discover new horizons - just how do we accomplish that? "Your Richly Imagined Future” is not just a platitude about being a better person - it is about having a greater impact on the people you associate with and developing a solid financial future at the same time. Material will be drawn from Robert's Canadian bestseller "Rich is a State of Mind", showing the parallels between personal and financial development, and how our concerns about personal finance directly affect our lives and our relationship with the people around us. During the discussion Robert will share with you his thoughts about financial leadership, discuss the myths of “financial happiness”, and provide insights into financial questions you may be thinking about, but don't know how to ask your advisor  (or may simply be too afraid to…). "Your Richly Imagined Future" covers multiple topics including Motivation, Leadership, Fiscal Responsibility and Financial Growth. How you deal with these topics is critical to your ability to deal with life's everyday events with the goal of developing solid long-term relationship with your finances. The four key areas are: 1) Understanding your "Current Reality" 2) Developing a picture of your "Richly Imagined Future" 3) Encouraging an attitude for "Disruption" 4) Sharing the power of "Choice"

My name is Robert Gignac and I am the author of the international best-seller “Rich is a State of Mind” – a novel about personal finance as seen through the eyes of a humorously dysfunctional family trying to come to grips with money, finance and life as it happens over the span of 13 months inside an American family.  I have been speaking to financial services companies across North America (and to their clients as well...) for the past five years and have appeared on a number of radio and TV shows and I am always open to having entertaining conversations about personal finance and the effect our good and bad decisions have on our lives. Llyod is a 55 yr old man who suffered with depression for 36 years and thought about killing himself twice the first time God himself stopped me the second time he sent an Archangel to stop me. So I know I'm here for something he wants me to do.
