Americans love big cars. But a new data analysis by the Economist finds the bigger the cars, the deadlier they are for pedestrians, for people driving smaller cars and for our roads and infrastructure. As the Economist's Daniel Knowles writes, “for every life the heaviest 1% of SUVs or trucks saves in America, more than a dozen lives are lost in smaller vehicles.” Regulators are starting to consider ways car design could be safer for pedestrians and other drivers. But advocates say more needs to be done. As part of our In Transit series, we'll take a closer look at the impact of big cars and hear from you: Do you love your big car? Why? Guests: Ethan Elkind, director of the Climate Program at the Center for Law, Energy and the Environment, UC Berkeley School of Law; host of the podcast, Climate Break Daniel Knowles, Midwest correspondent, the Economist Angie Schmitt, journalist, author of "RIGHT OF WAY: Race, Class, and the Silent Epidemic of Pedestrian Deaths in America", founder at 3MPH Planning and Consulting, focused on pedestrian safety

Amtrak reports that overall demand for passenger rail is soaring as yearly ridership totals approach pre-pandemic levels. But in California, the story is different. Popular west coast lines are losing riders and remain challenged by underinvestment and rules that give track priority to freight trains. In addition, increasingly powerful storms and rising seas threaten Amtrak's infrastructure: Southern California's Pacific Surfliner has repeatedly suspended service for emergency repairs. As part of Forum's In Transit series, we look at the future of Amtrak in California. Guests: Ethan Elkind, director of the Climate Program at the Center for Law, Energy and the Environment, UC Berkeley School of Law; host, the Climate Break podcast Tom Zoellner, English professor, Chapman University; editor-at-large, LA Review of Books; author, "Train: Riding the Rails That Created the Modern World -from the Trans-Siberian to the Southwest Chief"

How soon will Californians be able to travel between Los Angeles and San Francisco by high-speed rail? In welcome news, the California High-Speed Rail Authority received nearly $3.1 billion in federal funding last month to advance work on the project. Environmental reviews are largely complete for the 500-mile route, and construction has begun on bridges and tunnels in the Central Valley. But the cost for the entire project is now expected to reach $128 billion, four times higher than was estimated when voters first approved it in 2008. In this installment of our In Transit series, we speak to the CEO of the California High-Speed Rail Authority to get updates and take your questions.

To ease crushing urban traffic, London, Stockholm and Singapore all use congestion pricing, charging drivers to use busy roads in city centers or in certain zones at particular times of day. Congestion pricing has yet to be adopted in any U.S. city, but Los Angeles is taking a hard look at the concept. LA Metro will soon release a study examining which parts of the city could benefit most from congestion pricing, the environmental and public health benefits it could bring and who could qualify for carve-outs. We'll talk with LA Metro about their study, which will be open for public comment once released. And we'll hear from Ethan Elkind, our partner for our recurring series “In Transit,” about what LA's proposal could mean for the rest of the state. Guests: Ethan Elkind, director of the Climate Program at the Center for Law, Energy and the Environment, UC Berkeley School of Law; podcast host, Climate Break Mark Vallianatos, executive officer in the Office of Strategic Innovation, LA Metro
Riding a bike instead of taking a car is good for your health and for the planet. But in car-centric California, most people still rely on vehicles for daily trips like commuting to work. For cyclists in the state, that means getting around can be risky, especially when they're asked to share a road with two-ton metal boxes that are often moving very fast. So what would it take to make cycling safer in California, and how can we improve the state's biking infrastructure to encourage more riders? We explore those questions as part of Forum's ongoing series “In Transit.”
What exactly is a ‘brand evolution'? Just like a personal evolution, a brand also requires the creator to dig deep and ask the hard questions like: Am I showing up in a way that feels good and is helpful to my audience? Does my design style represent the vibe and vision I want to portray? Is my brand still showcasing my values? In this episode, Sundae Bean uncovers how a brand's evolution directly correlates to one's willingness to adapt and change to their own world, and to the one around them. “There was enough discomfort and clarity to push me to change.” Sundae takes listeners on her personal brand evolution, providing insights about how to get the most out of the process. She expounds on what true growth might feel like within your body and how to work with it. She also discusses how to collaborate with outside agencies to help you through this journey. Sundae Schneider-Bean is an intercultural strategist, a transformation facilitator, and a solution-oriented coach. She supports individuals and organizations as they traverse through (and flourish beyond!) life quakes and other major shifts – no matter where they are. Australia, Chile and China are the top three sources of the world's lithium – the element essential to build the batteries that power electric vehicles. This is the first episode of a special 4-part takeover with cast & creatives from Hulu's new musical series UP HERE. Make sure to stream the entire 21 song UP HERE soundtrack everywhere you find your music. Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Bobby Lopez are living proof that two is better than one. They have now co-created a romantic musical comedy called “UP HERE”, streaming exclusively on Hulu. The talented and award-winning duo talk about their humble beginnings and how they crossed paths, all thanks to the BMI workshop. They share the underlying themes of “Up Here”, which includes reestablishing relationships as we go through changes in life that they deeply relate with as a couple. Having the luxury of working together, they look back on their previous projects such as “Coco” “Finding Nemo” and “Frozen”, and how sometimes their work is a reflection of their experiences and what they're feeling and going through at the moment. Having never worked in television before, the two talk about what the process is like and why it's been an eye-opening experience for them. Kirsten and Bobby also recall their time working together for WandaVision and why it's the most fun they've ever had working on anything. Ultimately, the power duo's success can be attributed to two things: the desire to keep getting better and to connect with people. Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Bobby Lopez are two talented individuals who have collaborated and co-created music and lyrics for movies and television shows, including “Frozen 1” and “Frozen 2”, “Coco”, “Finding Nemo the Musical”, “Wonder Pets”, “Winnie the Pooh”, and “WandaVision”. Summary: Hop on board, buckle up, and stow your luggage, folks - we're in transit today! Whether by plane, train or automobile, travel can open up a lot of possibilities for characters across genres. Holly and Devin talk through the “closed door” atmosphere transit can bring to a story, and how physical travel can augment the metaphorical evolution of character arcs with a more unique twist. Topics Discussed: The Dagger (9:10): Holly discussed Bullet Train by Kotaro Isaka, a novel that follows the perilous train ride of five highly motivated assassins, the principal of which is Nanao, aka Ladybug. Boarding a bullet train from Tokyo to Morioka, Ladybug is given one simple task - grab a suitcase and get off at the next step. Things quickly devolve as he is met with competition, challenge, and various murder attempts. Holly's key takeaways were: This novel takes the time to take us inside characters to understand the shame, motivations, and quirks of a grisly set of over-the-top assassins. The depth Isaka achieves adds to the satirical tone while also increasing reader investment in the outcome of the wild train ride. While rife with murder, Bullet Train is also full of humor. Nanao keeps trying and failing to get off at the next stop, people get killed and characters have to prop them up to seem like they're still alive, and accidents lead to additional problems throughout the novel. The 2022 Brad Pitt film version changed a lot of the characters' racial and gender identities, but overall it captured the spirit, plot, and humor of the original story well. The Heart (24:50): Devin discussed The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren, a novel of mishaps and undesired outcomes that leads to a destiny no one ever imagined. Olive Torres has always seen herself as unlucky, and having to survive her sister's wedding next to her arch nemesis (and the brother of the groom) Ethan is just one more bit of evidence that she's right. When all the guests (and the happy couple) get food poisoning except for Olive and Ethan, they agree to go on the honeymoon so as not to waste the trip. Devin's key takeaways were: Olive and Ethan's mutual animosity was born from a misunderstanding and simple miscommunication. By traveling to Hawaii together and escaping their typical routines, they're both afforded space and a different perspective to begin to reconcile their differences. A combination of The Hating Game and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, this novel is full of hijinks, forced proximity, and miscommunication that ultimately allows both protagonists to reframe and transform their perception of reality. All it took was bad buffet food and a faux honeymoon to Hawaii. Trucks are by far the largest source of air pollution from vehicles in California, generating about 80% of carcinogenic diesel soot and 70% of smog-causing pollution, according to the Air Resources Board. And their impacts are unequal: communities of color and low-income communities situated near ports, distribution centers and warehouses -- particularly in the Inland Empire -- are more likely to bear the health costs. As part of Forum's "In Transit" series, we look at the scope of the problem and new efforts by the state to decarbonize its trucking industry. Guests: Ethan Elkind, director of the Climate Program at the Center for Law, Energy and the Environment, UC Berkeley School of Law - host of the podcast, Climate Break Rachel Uranga, reporter covering transportation and mobility, Los Angeles Times Amparo Muñoz, former policy director, Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice (CCAEJ) - and co-author of the letter urging Gov. Newsom to "Declare a Public Health State of Emergency in the Inland Empire"
Aviation is responsible for over two percent of global carbon dioxide emissions, and for technological reasons it's one of the most difficult sectors to decarbonize. But California – an early adopter of sustainable aviation fuel and home to 12 international airports – is positioned to guide the nation toward greener air travel, according to UC Berkeley climate and energy expert Ethan Elkind. As part of Forum's new series "In Transit," we'll talk about the hope and limitations of green aviation technology and how we can reduce our carbon footprint when we fly. As noted in the previous episode, auditions are the backbone of this industry. It is the fundamental job of every actor to do as many jobs as we can and do each one to the best of our ability. But there is an important gatekeeper when it comes to submitting our self tapes or actually getting in the audition room, and that is the casting Director. You've heard from Actors and their experiences in front of the audition table. Well, now it's time to hear from the other side of that proverbial table and what goes in to casting, and the vital role they play in the production for the stage or screen. Daryl Eisenberg, along with fellow casting director Ally Beans, works to create a comfortable space for actors, so they can take risks and really show their full potential as artists. You'll hear Daryl's thoughts on how actors can make their mark in the audition room or on a self-tape, and then you'll get an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at how she uses her position and expertise to make the audition process enjoyable and inclusive for artists on both sides of the table. But the summer of 2020 also changed the way we think about who is coming to the auditions and what that creative team looks like. There are certain people that are just born to be on stage. Telly Leung is one of them. Hilary met Telly almost two decades ago when they did The King and I with Lou Diamond Phillips as the lead. Since then, "leading man" is something Telly is quite familiar with and it's a perfect fit. From Aladdin on Broadway to other notable roles that include the Broadway revival and national tour of Rent, Godspell, Allegiance and In Transit...he's done it all. And if you're a fan of the TV show Glee, it's hard to think of The Warblers without Wes. But what Telly has learned during his devotion to the performing arts is that it comes with a responsibility. Especially when you're the star. On this episode and in honor of Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, HIListically Speaking, Telly opens up about placing race and diversity center stage. The importance of mental health and sharing your story. And why taking a giant leap into new territory as a director is crucial for conscious conversations to exist; not only for the arts, but for mind, body and spirit as well. Plus, Telly goes public for the first time about about an experiment that nurtured his mental and physical health. Something he's only shared with close family and friends...until now. The curtain is rising and you are front row and center. Enjoy the conversation with the incredibly talented leading man, Telly Leung. The Bard has had lots of his work retold, but today we're looking at the 2006 retelling of Twelfth Night in the comedy "She's the Man." This teen comedy has a 43% Rotten Tomatoes score, but is that deserved? I'm joined by Dianna E. Anderson, an author and activist with a new book, "In Transit," releasing July 12. They pointed me to this movie as a fascinating look at gender politics and the discussion around trans athletes. We talk about Channing Tatum's excellent comedic chops, how I cried at a kind of cheesy moment in the movie, and discover the actor who will always be my choice for Best/Worst actor if he's in a film. Telly and Cameron discuss the inspiration behind the documentary Ensemble, the catharsis of filming it, and the resilience of the 13 very diverse people in different stages of their life and career who are featured on screen. They share thoughts on George Takei's legacy as an artist, activist and producer, and how his career encouraged and cleared a path for so many after him. Telly and Cameron express their support of “call out culture” in order to take time for yourself physically and mentally, and reflect on the old adage “the show must go on”. They also open up about what they hope people walk away with after watching their new documentary, Ensemble which dropped on March 11th on Broadway On Demand.
