Scope expansion is a hot topic in main areas of the medical world. When one profession gains the rights to provide certain types of care, it often means they are encroaching on another profession's territory. But that expansion can often benefit thousands (if not millions) of patients. So, not surprisingly, there are often heated battles for these contested territories. And many questions arise...Which profession should be allowed to do which procedures? How do we improve access to care for patients in rural locations? Are some professions acting as gatekeepers? To help us better understand the importance of scope expansion in the optometry world, we will have a two part discussion with 4 different subject matter experts: Dr. Shaina Nensi (President of the Ontario Association of Optometrists), Dr. Sophia Leung (President of the Alberta Association of Optometrists), Dr. Evelyn Lo (President of the BC Doctors of Optometry), and Dr. Sarah MacIver (Clinical Professor at the University of Waterloo). This episode is the first of this two part series with Dr. Nensi and Dr. Leung.I hope you enjoy this very important conversation and I encourage you to share your thoughts!Love the show? Susan Guthrie welcomes Karis Nafte, Pet Custody Mediator and Certified Dog Behavior Consultant, to explore the complexities of pet custody in divorce. With the legal landscape around pets evolving, the topic of pet custody has become increasingly relevant for divorcing couples. Karis, founder of Who Keeps the Dog?, sheds light on the unique challenges of navigating custody for your furry family members and shares insights from her new book, Who Keeps the Dog: Navigating Pet Custody During Divorce. In this conversation, Karis explains how divorce can impact your beloved pets and provides practical strategies to ensure their well-being throughout the process. What You'll Hear: Why pets are no longer treated as mere property in divorce How the changing legal landscape impacts pet custody decisions Key considerations for creating a pet custody agreement Tips for minimizing stress for your pets during separation Golden Nuggets: “ You can't make the decision on the dog's future based on your hurt feelings or your negative emotions. You're not considering your dog. You're not seeing the situation through their eyes. And that's really hard, but you can do it. The most correct decision for the dog is there, if you dig for it.” “ Your dog will be fine. Dogs are so much more adaptable than we think they are. Don't imagine that your dog will be as upset as you are. I know that's hard to hear. It's harder for us than it is for dogs.” “ How do we look after our pets during divorce where we're really focusing on what's best for the dog? It's hard to do that when emotions do what they do in divorce.” **************************************** About this week's special guest: Karis Nafte Karis Nafte is the founder of Who Keeps the Dog, Pet Custody Mediation. We open Episode 2 with a review of the great response to Episode 1 of 2024, about Dr. Joss 'Pollyanna' Reimer, who continues in the footsteps of WRHA leaders the public doesn't trust. There will be a follow-up... Get all our columns and podcasts at ActionLine.ca 7:34 Part 2- A Twitter post by Dr. David Jacobs, President of the Ontario Association of Radiologists, caught Marty's eye last week, and with good reason. "Attached is celebrated Geriatrician Dr. Ted Rosenberg's letter of resignation to UBC Medical School. After 30 years of distinguished teaching, he no longer feels safe in the UBC environment." When Marty read through the correspondence, he realized the doctor who took a stand against rampant antisemitism at the University of British Columbia was a former Joseph Wolinsky Collegiate schoolmate in Winnipeg- Teddy Rosenberg. You'll hear about the career he built treating the elderly and keeping families together, and the recognition from his peers. After an antisemitic petition signed by 200 med students and over 100 faculty members was launched in October, Rosenberg asked top administrators to rectify the toxic campus environment targeting staff and students who were Jewish or Zionists. SEE ALSO: Meet Nanaimo Nikki, The Jew-Hating UBC Dental Instructor His Nov. 29 letter to UBC president Benoit-Antoine Bacon and university brass stated, “This petition and other similar statements on campus, as well as the inaction by UBC, makes me wonder if antisemitism has become systemic in this institution.” “Why do these efforts for diversity and inclusion come to an abrupt halt when it involves ‘including and protecting' Jewish/Zionist students and faculty?” Rosenberg wasn't wrong and they tried to blow him off. Just before Christmas he and 283 physicians sent another plea: “This is resulting in hate speech, student intimidation, and the feelings of many students and teachers that they are working in a toxic environment. Several of us have expressed concerns to you in writing and are waiting for specific responses." After getting nowhere, Rosenberg showed more guts than every leader of the "organized Jewish community" in Canada has mustered - and quit the medical faculty on January 2. You'll hear his dismantling of the cowardly academics hiding behind "DEI" programs- and how he searched high and low for any mention on the UBC websites of Jews or antisemitism, and found none. “One third of the medical students and some faculty, have publicly expressed their contempt towards me, as a Jew. I cannot take the risk of being accused of implicit harassment or racism, which is indefensible, by a ‘triggered' student.” Marty reviews Dr. Rosenberg's letters and the crude behavior he described that UBS honchos refuse to confront. It's a pattern we are seeing from politicians, police and academic institutions across Canada. Teddy Rosenberg is the hero we all need. 28:57 Part 3- The fig-leaf that DEI provides to attack Jews and Israel was the beginning of the end for Harvard President Claudine Gay. A key figure demanding accountability in Ivy League schools is Bill Ackman, a leading Jewish financier and philanthropist. This weekend Ackman explained how the destructive nature of DEI in the higher education system "can convince a generation that some of us are oppressors, and others are the oppressed, and provide justifications for what kinds and what degree of violence and terrorism are appropriate tools to address this perceived oppression." Marty discusses how he relates it to education and medical faculties, the justice system, and even voting rights. Ackman's wife is now under attack by Business Insider as revenge, and he's fighting back. "Even the mafia operates with more dignity and respect for family, and I apologize to the mafia for the comparison." The Jewish community in Canada needs more people like Teddy Rosenberg and Bill Ackman. Email Comments, News tips or donate via Interac- martygoldlive@gmail.com

One out of five people struggle with what they need to do due to their mental health. With this in mind, how can we make healthcare for mental health more accessible? There are several solutions found for mental health throughout the years - therapy, medications, and the like, but these are costly and are not attainable for all. We live in a world where there is much progress on the mental health stigma but there is still ways to go into unearthing all the truths about mental health. Despite this, there are actually natural solutions that are within our reach and will allow prevention of a continuous decline of mental health. RECOVERING POLITICIANS PANEL: TRUDEAU'S CARBON TAX FLOP 12:00-12:30 Marissa Lennox is joined by George Smitherman, a Former Ontario Liberal MPP for Toronto Centre who also served as a health minister and deputy Premier, Janet Ecker Former Ontario PC MPP and finance minister and Cheri DiNovo,Former Ontario NDP MPP and recipient of the Order of Canada. Eight years of pushing fossil fuel taxes for climate action, but now, a seismic shift: the Prime Minister announced a suspension of the carbon tax for home heating oil for three years. This handed opposition leader Pierre Poilievre a prime moment to grill him in yesterday's Question Period. The move gives a leg up to one region, namely Atlantic Canada, where 40% of households rely on heating oil. Compare that to Ontario, where only 2% do. Predictably, other provinces like Ontario and Saskatchewan are now voicing their desire for similar exemptions for other fuels like propane and natural gas. Premier Moe said yesterday that if a deal isn't reached to exempt all forms of home heating from the carbon tax before winter hits, "Sask Energy will stop collecting and submitting the carbon tax on natural gas." So how does this play out? If exemptions aren't given, will provinces go rogue? And is this the start of the end for Trudeau's carbon tax? PROVINCE TO REDUCE MAMMOGRAM SCREENINGS FOR WOMEN 40+ 12:30-12:45 Marissa Lennox is joined by Dr. David Jacobs, President of Ontario Association of Radiologists as well as Dr. Martin Yaffe, Breast Cancer researcher at Sunnybrook Research Institute, and The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research and a Professor at University of Toronto. The Ontario government is reducing the requirement of breast screening mammograms for women from age 50 to age 40 with the aim of contributing to earlier detection. The move will be implemented starting next Fall. According to Ontario's Minister of Health this will make it so that an additional 130,000 mammograms are completed in the province on an annual basis. WHY AN ONTARIO MUNICIPALITY IS CALLING ON OTTAWA TO DO ITS PART TO ADDRESS AUTO THEFT 12:45-1 PM Marissa Lennox is joined by Jeff Knoll, Oakville Councillor for Ward 5 and chair of the Halton Police Board as well as Bryan Gast, VP, Investigative Services of Équité Association. The Town of Oakville is calling on Ottawa to crack down on auto theft both locally and at the national level. On Oct 23rd, City Council unanimously voted in favour of endorsing a motion by Ontario's Big City Mayors to call on the feds to put more funding into the CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) for inspections of shipping containers at Canadian ports since that is where organized crime ships out stolen cars to the world. They also want to see Ottawa implement a law that would require auto manufacturers to have anti-theft technologies in all new models of vehicles. The Insurance Bureau of Canada explained that auto theft claims for the region of Halton shot up by 200 per cent between 2018 and 2022. Earlier this month, The Port of Montreal received $150 million in funding from Ottawa to expand a container terminal project. But is there enough funding for additional inspections of those shipping containers?

It challenges the stigma seniors face; the ageism still so prevalent in society. It reminds us of the wealth of wisdom our elders offer and in doing so, helps restore them to a place of reverence. TRIGGER WARNING: In this episode, my guest and I dive into the following topics: Physical Assault on a Child, Removing children from their home, Attempted Sexual Assault. If you need to pause or stop listening to this episode, please honour that. Thank you. Per The State of America's Children, a child is removed from their home and placed into foster care EVERY TWO MINUTES. In this episode, my guest Kimberly Valerie speaks about how she was removed from her childhood home at a young age in Canada. Yet, her siblings remained. After having an experience in a juvenile detention center for two days, she decided she never wanted to get into trouble again. Instead, she chose to over-achieve, become successful, be "the strong one" and live by all of the things that defines you in society as "making it". Except mentally, spiritually, and emotionally, she was so exhausted with her life. So much so that it impacted her physically and she developed a life threatening disease. The one thing that broke her free from the addiction of approval: tapping into her subconscious. Part 3 of 3 in our series titled You Don't Have to Be An Influencer. In today's episode I'm delighted to have a special guest: Jane Clapp. Jane is the founder of Jungian Somatics and an advanced candidate with the Ontario Association of Jungian Analysts. She has worked at the intersection of the body and psyche as a movement coach and an embodiment educator for over two decades. Jane and I met in the embodiment space years ago, and just about one year ago we went through similar reckonings around social media and both left the platforms. We discuss Jane's experience of finding success for her small business by marketing on social media platforms, how that effected her both for good and for ill, how platforms have changed since their early days, the broad scope of how algorithms determine the landscape of our world, her academic paper titled: Social Media and the Collective Unconscious: Archetypal Algorithms and the Colonization of the Psyche, and why she chose to leave social media platforms even though it would cost her revenue. In this week's episode of Healthspan Academy, I chatted with Dr. Lori Bouchard, who is a Naturopathic Doctor specializing in cancer treatment and prevention. We discussed the key metabolic and nutrition-based factors that contribute to tumor development and metastasis. Dr. Lori outlined the role of the gut-brain axis on controlling the onset of cancer. She also chatted about some of the most promising treatment options that are available beyond traditional chemotherapy, including intravenous vitamin C injection, magnetism, and ozone therapy. We talked about some of the key carcinogenic agents and how to minimize your risk of being impacted by them as well as best practices for stimulating cell autophagy and killing cancer cells. Dr. Lori Bouchard has dedicated more than a decade to working with patients with cancer. She helps them build a life that enables them to thrive and co-exist with cancer. A significant portion of her work encompasses changing patients' perspectives on what it means to have cancer, live in a meaningful way, and add health despite simultaneously managing a disease. As a Naturopathic Doctor with a particular focus on cancer health, Dr. Lori is on a mission to help patients understand the real root of cancer and how gut health, genetics, and environmental factors impact tumor growth. She completed her Degree in Health Science at Western University prior to completing her Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine. She is also a member of the Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors (OAND), the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors (CAND), and the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians. Dr. Lori is the founder of Inside Health Clinic, Ontario's most innovative naturopathic healing centre which aims to help people reverse complicated and often misunderstood conditions such as Lyme, chronic fatigue, Hashimoto's, and infertility while offering a comprehensive range of naturopathic support, welcoming all those who wish to live in optimal health. She is also the author of Amazon's Bestselling Book “Live Longer and Stronger with Breast Cancer”, endorsed by US Presidential candidate and 4 times NY Times best-selling author Marianne Williamson which is a step-by-step guide to help women fight their cancer more effectively. Find out more about Dr. Bouchard on her website at www.drlori.ca and on Instagram at @drloribouchard. Today, we are making invisible things VISIBLE for the people of Ontario and therapists, shining a light the landscape of mental health care in this province. In today's episode, I am talking to the President of the Ontario Association of Mental Health Professionals (OAMHP), Registered Psychotherapist Jane Alway, about the barriers we face, and the opportunities for action. We cover: Why did both waitlists, and certain conditions like eating disorders, increase during the pandemic? Exactly how can our provincial government increase everyday Ontarians' access to mental health care? If we want to be able to be able to see a qualified therapist within a reasonable amount of time, what should we be asking our provincial candidates during the upcoming election? How can psychotherapists in Ontario use their voices to help advocate for their clients?
