Damon Kruskowski, author of Ways of Hearing and The New Analog, previously member of Galaxie 500 and currently a member of Damon & Naomi interviews Rose Simpson about her book Muse, Odalisque, Handmaiden. Rose is an English former musician. Between 1968 and 1971, she was a member of the Incredible String Band, with whom she sang and played bass guitar, violin, and percussion. Between 1967 and 1971 Rose Simpson lived with the Incredible String Band (Mike Heron, Robin Williamson and Licorice McKechnie), morphing from English student to West Coast hippie and, finally, bassist in leathers. The band's image adorned psychedelic posters and its music was the theme song for an alternative lifestyle. Rose and partner Mike Heron believed in, and lived, a naive vision of utopia in Scotland. But they were also a band on tour, enjoying the thrills of that life. They were at the center of “Swinging London” and at the Chelsea Hotel with Andy Warhol's superstars. They shared stages with rock idols and played at Woodstock in 1969. Rose and fellow ISB member Licorice were hippie pin-ups, while Heron and Robin Williamson the seers and prophets of a new world. Through a haze of incense and marijuana, they played out their Arcadian dreams on stages brilliant with the colors of clothes, light-shows, rugs, cushions, and exotic instruments. Like most utopias, the ISB's imploded. Never seeing herself as a professional musician, Rose retained an outsider's detachment even while living the life of a hippie chick. Her memoir gives a voice to those flower-wreathed girls whose photographs have become symbols of the psychedelic sixties. Learn more about your ad choices. Today's episode I spoke with the owner of Southern Equine Distributing about their Equine Omega product line. I became very intrigued about these products as I have seen a lot of top level riders using them. Robin gave us some great information on how their product is different from others on the market, some of the amazing testimonials they've had over the years as well as her experience as an entrepreneur. I was able to try the Equine Omega Complete on my own horse the last month and I can't wait to show you the results. If you are interested in reading more about the studies at the University of Guelph involving EOC you can visit their website at www.southernequinedistributing.com. Welcome back for Season 2 of Careers Unfiltered! To kick off the season, we have a guest who's had her fair share of "high-powered" roles, as she puts it, between the American Journal of Human Genetics, Booz Allen Hamilton, and UR Medical Center - now she's a 7th Grade science teacher at a suburban Rochester middle school. How and why did she make that seemingly drastic change? Are those roles really so different? Find out on this week's episode!

The Languedoc Roussillon region produces good quality, reasonably-priced wine, but for how long? In June winegrowers were hard hit when temperatures reached 46 degrees Celsius, literally scorching the grapes on the vines. Extreme weather used to be the exception, now it's becoming the norm. We report from a village near Montpellier where winegrowers, on the frontline of climate change, are working with INRA to find ways to adapt and survive. Also, at least 11 million French people could be considered caregivers, taking care of elderly parents, disabled spouses, chronically-ill family members. Dr. Hélène Rossinot calls them the invisible backbone of the French healthcare system, and warns that the lack of recognition can lead to burn-out. She talks about what caregivers do, and what France should do for them. And the French love affair with burgers! McDonald's marks its 40th anniversary in the land of haute cuisine. But there's more to the official story.   In this episode: - Robin Williamson, winemaker, Domaine de Saumarez - Joel Anthérieu, winemaker, Le Clos d'Isidore - Régis Sudre, winemaker, Domaine St Julia - Nathalie Ollat and Jean-Marc Touzard, of INRA, the French National Institute for Agricultural Research - Helene Rossinot, doctor, author of Aidants, ces invisibles (Those invisible caregivers)   Subscribe to the Spotlight on France podcast on iTunes (link here) or Google podcasts (link here). Listen to new music for the instrument from Southwestern Norway known as the Hardanger fiddle, (or hardingfele), but of course there’s a twist. For this New Sounds, there’s post-rock, world music, electroacoustic music, and even an Irish-American duet on this Norwegian instrument – with music from Scotland, Ireland, and the U.S. Hear the collaborative recording between Hardanger fiddle master Nils Økland and the post-rock duo The Low Frequency In Stereo, called Lumen Drones – which comes off as a psychedelic drone band. Then, listen to music from the octogenarian bard Robin Williamson (of Incredible String Band reknown), along with violist Mat Maneri and drummer Ches Smith. Then, hear a duo record from Caoimhin O Raghallaigh (of The Gloaming) and Dan Trueman (founder of Princeton Laptop Orchestra), which stretches and recombines the DNA of Norwegian folk and Irish trad fiddling on a 10-stringed instrument, the Hardanger d’Amore. Plus, there’s music from the Hardanger’s likely ancestor, the viola d’amore, by composer/violist Garth Knox, and more.   PROGRAM #3676 Hardanger Fiddle Music (First aired on 12/23/2014)   ARTIST(S) RECORDING CUT(S) SOURCE Lumen Drones (Nils Okland/Per Steinar Lie/Orjan Haaland) Lumen Drones Dark Sea [3:54] ECM 2434 http://ecmrecords.com Annbjørg Lien Baba Yaga Aja [6:27] North Side #6044 / Grappa Musikkforlag GRCD 4158 annbjorglien.com Robin Williamson w/ Mat Maneri, viola and Ches Smith, drums Trusting In The Rising Light Our Evening Walk [5:40] ECM 2393 ecmrecords.com Lumen Drones (Nils Okland/Per Steinar Lie/Orjan Haaland) Lumen Drones Keelwater [6:15] See above.
