Heartbroken at his death, she travels to his childhood home to spread his ashes. There, overcome with memories of the man she adored and consumed by a history she never knew, she is pulled into another time. The Ireland of 1921, teetering on the edge of war, is a dangerous place in which to awaken. But there Anne finds herself, hurt, disoriented, and under the care of Dr. Thomas Smith, guardian to a young boy who is oddly familiar. Mistaken for the boy’s long-missing mother, Anne adopts her identity, convinced the woman’s disappearance is connected to her own. As tensions rise, Thomas joins the struggle for Ireland’s independence and Anne is drawn into the conflict beside him. Caught between history and her heart, she must decide whether she’s willing to let go of the life she knew for a love she never thought she’d find. But in the end, is the choice actually hers to make?” Regina - - Good Neighbors: Gentrifying Diversity in Boston’s South End Hardcover by Sylvie Tissot (Author), David Broder (Translator), Catherine Romatowski (Translator) Alias Grace (Netflix) Edyta - Ripple Buttshorts: Artemis is reading Wolves of Willoughby Chace Heather: The Dark is Rising series -
BOOK TALK @ 4:44 Notes from Our Chats :) - both by Octavia Butler--WITH IMPORTANT NOTE FROM LISTENER MAUREEN: "In the current climate, I think it's worth noting that Octavia Butler is probably NOT one of the few women of color writing science fiction, but rather one of the few women of color BEING PUBLISHED in science fiction. Systemic racism shows up everywhere! The most recent This American Life podcast covered Afrofuturism (and was a rebroadcast), and so I would imagine that lots of POC are writing science fiction, but the publishing world may not be publishing them. And, of course, it's hard for anyone to get published." Book and pattern recommendations below. The Royal Society of Unnatural Philosophers maintains the magic within His Majesty’s lands. But lately, the once proper institute has fallen into disgrace, naming an altogether unsuitable gentleman as their Sorcerer Royal and allowing England’s stores of magic to bleed dry. At least they haven’t stooped so low as to allow women to practice what is obviously a man’s profession… At his wit’s end, Zacharias Wythe, Sorcerer Royal of the Unnatural Philosophers, ventures to the border of Fairyland to discover why England’s magical stocks are drying up, an adventure that brings him in contact with Prunella Gentlewoman, a woman with immense power and an unfathomable gift, and sets him on a path which will alter the nature of sorcery in all of Britain—and the world at large…” - low-rent Strange & Norell - Robert Asprin “Myth” Series Robert Asprin Neuromancer (Sprawl Trilogy Book 1) by William Gibson - “Winner of the Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick Awards, Neuromancer is a science fiction masterpiece—a classic that ranks as one of the twentieth century’s most potent visions of the future. Case was the sharpest data-thief in the matrix—until he crossed the wrong people and they crippled his nervous system, banishing him from cyberspace. Now a mysterious new employer has recruited him for a last-chance run at an unthinkably powerful artificial intelligence. With a dead man riding shotgun and Molly, a mirror-eyed street-samurai, to watch his back, Case is ready for the adventure that upped the ante on an entire genre of fiction. Neuromancer was the first fully-realized glimpse of humankind’s digital future—a shocking vision that has challenged our assumptions about technology and ourselves, reinvented the way we speak and think, and forever altered the landscape of our imaginations.” Heather. Kitchen is an enchantingly original book that juxtaposes two tales about mothers, love, tragedy, and the power of the kitchen and home in the lives of a pair of free-spirited young women in contemporary Japan. Mikage, the heroine, is an orphan raised by her grandmother, who has passed away. Grieving, Mikage is taken in by her friend Yoichi and his mother (who is really his cross-dressing father) Eriko. As the three of them form an improvised family that soon weathers its own tragic losses, Yoshimoto spins a lovely, evocative tale with the kitchen and the comforts of home at i.... In the mid 90s there was a fab movie version of the first book (Devil in a Blue Dress—with an exceptionally hot Denzel Washinton). These are set in late 40s-mid 50s LA and show the town as it was then, from a Black perspective, and not at all shy at calling out the racism, much of which has changed very little. But they're also just wonderful potboilers in the finest tradition. I recommend them to anyone wanting to read escapist fiction and diversify their bookshelves at the same time.

Additionally, halberds were reinforced with metal rims over the shaft, thus making effective weapons for blocking other weapons like swords. This capability increased its effectiveness in battle, and expert halberdiers were as deadly as any other weapon masters were. The gains granted by usufruct can be clearly seen in the Latin phrase from which the word developed, usus et fructus, which means “use and enjoyment.” Latin speakers condensed that phrase to ususfructus, the term English speakers used as the model for our modern word. Usufruct has been used as a noun for the legal right to use something since the mid-1600s. Any right granted by usufruct ends at a specific point, usually the death of the individual who holds it. Actual sheets of thin gold were attached to the fabric by first applying a thin layer of a fatty substance onto the cloth after which the gold leaf was beaten into the fabric.
