“My family had a farm in North Dakota,” says Michelle Korsmo, CEO of the National Restaurant Association. “I was raised knowing that helping each other was the best way to help ourselves and that together people really can make a difference.” Korsmo gained early restaurant experience working at TGI Fridays before becoming a state government lobbyist. From there she transitioned to CEO positions with the American Land and Title Association, the National Wine and Spirits Association, and eventually the National Restaurant Association. Korsmo discusses her responsibilities as CEO which go beyond member representation and lobbying. “Watching the growth of education among students is particularly satisfying,” says Korsmo, adding, “The food safety, culinary skills and management development provided through our Pro Start program is successfully training our future leaders." According to Korsmo, the association's acquisition of RestaurantOwner.com increased its engagement with independent restaurant owners and operators via education and support. “I believe it is the absolute best collection of information and education for the hands-on restaurant owner available on the web today.” As for the future of the restaurant industry, Korsmo envisions employment and sales growth, increased competition, and additional use of technology. “The National Restaurant Association will continue to use its efforts to best represent our interests while supporting the membership with the rapidly evolving industry we are a part of."

There's no easier way to say this and have it land.  There is legislation in motion under the 30x30 American the Beautiful Act that states it will put thirty (30) percent of US land under federal jurisdiction to preserve nature against human influence.  In this episode, I break down Kamala Harris's involvement in pushing this agenda through in 2021.  It is directly correlated to Agenda 21 that I highlighted in my 2008 film Esoteric Agenda. Thanks to Catherine Austin Fitts and the Financial Rebellion podcast for bringing the 30x30 American the Beautiful Act to my attention.Go to BenJosephStewart.com and become a member to enjoy exclusive weekly content like this and more.

Episode 2183: Mimi Casteel on her life-long love affair with the American land

Last month we ran an interview with the Oregon based regenerative wine maker Mimi Casteel about fixing America one sip at a time. In addition, we recorded a KEEN ON America segment with Casteel about her life-long love affair with the American land. Filmed at her family's beautiful Hope Well Winery, Casteel spoke with an infectious passion about the natural beauty of America. However you think about the current state of the United States, you'll be inspired by Mimi Casteel's faith in the regenerative quality of American nature and its land. Strongly recommended. Mimi Casteel is the daughter of Ted Casteel and Pat Dudley, co-founders of Bethel Heights Vineyard. Growing up working in the vineyard and winery, Mimi gained such an appreciation for the industry that she promptly left home after high school. Armed with a BA in History and Classics from Tulane University, Mimi spent the next year working in various National Forests across the west. Her adventures fueled her passion for studying botany, forestry, and ecology. Mimi earned her MS from Oregon State University in Forest Science, and spent the next several years working as a botanist and ecologist for the Forest Service, living in the backcountry. She could never get past the longing for the vineyard, and working with the vines. Mimi returned to Bethel Heights in 2005, along with her cousin and childhood best friend Ben to take the helm as second generation winegrowers and owners. In 2015 Mimi left Bethel Heights and began her Hope Well journey, building an island of biodiversity and resilience on her own 80-acre farm, growing grapes for others to support the farm, and making wines to give a voice to the process of regeneration. Firmly convinced that moving from conventional to regenerative agriculture on working lands is the most powerful tool humanity has to reverse climate change, the mission of Hope Well has been to help spread the word by example, one farm at a time. 2020 changed everything. In 2020 the climate delivered a clear personal message that there is no time left for a one-farm-at-a-time strategy to address the climate crisis. In 2021 Mimi made the hard decision to move Hope Well, the wine, the sheep, the chickens, the children, the philosophy, the entire ethos, to a much smaller, integrated farm that allows for the time and personal capacity to do the work that needs to be done now, building strategies and networks that can transform agriculture on a global scale while there is still time.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children.Keen On is a reader-supported publication. Episode 10 of Fragile Juggernaut surveys the wide range of workers who united–and sometimes fought each other–under the banner of the CIO. We begin in the slaughterhouse, with special guest Rick Halpern explaining how the United Packinghouse Workers of America (PWOC/UPWA) brought together black and white workers despite segregation inside and outside the workplace. Then, the hosts discuss two of the largest CIO unions: the United Steel Workers (USWA/SWOC) and the United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers (UE). These two unions are often thought of, respectively, as emblematic of the “right” and “left” wings of the CIO. But what does that mean? And why did these two unions develop the way they did? Featured music: “The Cloakmaker's Union” (Joe Glazer); “Killing Floor” (Howlin' Wolf); “Hard Times Killing Floor” (Skip James); “Odpocivam v Americkej pode/I Lie in the American Land” (written by Andrew Kovaly, performed by Vivien Richman); “Spirit of Phil Murray” (Sterling Jubilee Singers). Joe Biden's spokesman dismissed the concern, calling it a “home ownership” issue unworthy of his time. So we'll discuss that statement, explore the facts, and let you decide. As always, I'm keeping an eye out for developing stories. Put these two on your radar. First, the official price tag is out for the Biden Administration's student loan forgiveness plan. I've got that number plus a reminder that most borrowers say they don't need the assistance. Second, an update on the War in Ukraine — specifically whether Russian men are fleeing their country to avoid being forced into service. And, of course, we've got a listener's question, today from Blaine in Nebraska, who wrote in wondering if he's the only one worried about gas and groceries, not climate change. ------ Please remember to subscribe if you enjoyed this episode of the President's Daily Brief. Livable Low-carbon City

US cities don't have a missing middle problem, they have a missing *mid-rise* problem. A problem that is reflected in the depths of our housing crises – and in the inability to meet climate goals. In this episode of the Livable Low-Carbon City, we'll explore the problems with Missing Middle housing and why it is inadequate to meet the demands of today's housing shortage - and why we need to be focusing on broad areas zoned for mid-rise districts instead. Subjects discussed in this episode include:Missing Middle HousingMid-rise districts like those in Berlin, Amsterdam, Tokyo...The stunning brownfield to ecodistrict development in Utrecht's Merwede, by OKRA + Bura Urbanism. Since we're discussing land use between the U.S. and Germany/Europe - I highly recommend Prof. Sonia Hirt's article on this subject, 'To zone or not to zone? In late June, the Supreme Court handed down a decision that expands the states' authority over Native land. The conservative court ruled 5-4 in favor of Oklahoma in the case, allowing states to charge non-Indians who commit crimes against Indians on tribal land.According to Justice Neil Gorsuch, who wrote the dissent, the ruling in Oklahoma v. Castro-Huerta is "an embarrassing new entry into the anti-canon of Indian law ... Truly, a more ahistorical and mistaken statement of Indian law would be hard to fathom."We discuss how the ruling changes how crimes will be prosecuted and by whom. Or maybe it's the feeling of being the absolute king of the road, that is until a semi-truck comes by. The great American land yachts produced from mid-1950s until the mid-1990s had a spectacular run. In a weepy swan song for outgoing District 4 Sacramento City Councilmember Steve Hansen, Sacramento Bee columnist Marcos Breton still cannot seem to wrap his head around why people voted Hansen out and Katie Valenzuela in--despite all of us repeatedly telling him the reason. Renters living in precarious housing situations simply do not see Hansen as an ally--particularly after he and council tried to kill real rent control this year, with his office famously trying to smear one of rent control's biggest champions, Michelle Pariset (who is now, in a wonderful twist of fate, Valenzuela's chief of staff).   Thanks to neolibs like Hansen, Sacramento--along with all of California--faces an eviction tsunami during the worst of the coronavirus pandemic.   First among these fights is Hawthorne Suites, where at least 38 residents received eviction notices from the Calabasas-based Ezralow Company. As friend of the show and longtime housing advocate Alison B mentioned on a viral Twitter thread, Sacramento leaders like Hansen have set us up for a Hooverville future, in which thousands upon thousands of renters will end up unhoused and we'll be forced to plan and scale formal encampments throughout the region.   Speaking of which, Monday was the winter solstice. And every year on that day the Sacramento Regional Coalition to End Homelessness holds a ceremony reading the names of everyone in the county who died in the streets. In 2020, we lost over 90 neighbors. Shannon attended the ceremony, and shares with us some of her reflections.   Thanks for listening, defund the police and, as always: Twitter: @youknowkempa, @guillotine4you, @ShanNDSTevens, @Flojaune And thank you to Be Brave Bold Robot for the tunes.

One of the most distinguished voices in American literature, Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and poet N. Scott Momaday has devoted much of his life to celebrating and preserving Native American culture, especially its oral tradition. A member of the Kiowa tribe who was born and grew up on Indian reservations throughout the Southwest, Dr. Momaday has a deep attachment to the land he knows well and loves deeply. In his latest book, Earth Keeper: Reflections on an American Land, Dr. Momaday reflects on his native ground and its influence on his people and the person that he is. In this episode, Indigenous scholar and activist Melissa Nelson talks with Dr. Momaday about his life, his work, and the importance of remembering that the Earth is a sacred place of wonder and beauty; a source of strength and healing that must be protected before it’s too late. Dr. Momaday reminds us that we must all be keepers of the Earth. This episode was recorded during a live online event on November 12, 2020. A transcript is available at ciispod.com.

She provides an incredible overview to the situation on White Mesa land and the people's struggle.  In the final part of the show, an amazing activist Leona Morgan, a Dine women, from Dine No Nukes, talks about her organisation and the extraordinary work they are carrying out on the dangers of uranium mining and the impacts that uranium mining has had on the Dine lands.  From the Southwest region of the US she has worked as a community organizer and educator on uranium issues since 2007. She has worked primarily to help prevent water contamination from a proposed ISL facility. In 2014, Morgan co-founded Diné No Nukes (DNN). Coming up with a title for today was difficult. I'm not sure if I got it right or not, but I thought I'd focus a chunk of the show today on Trump's comments about Russia and the U.S. Government. To say it's a political foe paw to speak about America's dark past would be an understatement. We're brought up hearing about all the wonderful things America, freedom, and capitalism have done for the world, and you know what, it's all true. But our government approved history books conveniently omit things like our war of aggression in the Philipeans, the Moro Rebellion, and My Lai. It's not that we don't hear about these things, but we speak of them as though they are the exception to the rule, a few bad apples in an otherwise unblemished history. But the truth is far less pristine. America, like all nations, has committed its share of atrocities. Just don't mention it to anyone or you'll quickly be labeled anti-American. Trump made such an error this weekend in his interview with Fox's Bill Oreilly. I want to talk with you about those comments and the criticisms of Trump in general. There's a lot of emotion but very little substance in the arguments being put forward. Also, if you wonder why I'm so skeptical of climate change I'll give you more evidence today. It turns out NOAA intentionally falsified climate data to impact the recent Paris Climate Accord. Nobody is looking out for you. Not even the people charged with doing just that.Support the show.
