POPULARITY
A teen guitarist brings a percussive work by Roland Dyens, an 18-year-old cellist performs a Beethoven Cello Sonata, and a teen soprano sings a work entitled "Joy". We also hear a flashback performance from a French Horn player who was featured on the show back in 2012.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
Philadelphia Orchestra's Principal Bassist Joseph Conyers is back as co-host as we meet a bright teen harpist whose commitment to her instrument is so strong she commutes weekly from Virginia to New York for lessons and a vibrant 12-year-old guitarist plays a fiery work by Roland Dyens and talks about his love for fishing, movies, and performing with his sisters. Peter Dugan and Joseph Conyers open the program with a moving interpretation of Florence Price's Adoration.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Chapdelaine is the only person to have won both the GFA competition (as a matter of fact the very first one) and the National Fingerstyle Championship. If you happen see Chapdelaine live you'll see him switch effortlessly between the steel string and the nylon string guitars and hear a blend of his autobiographical compositions, his spot-on arrangements of Rock ‘n' Roll classics like “Come Together” and “Hit the Road Jack,” and classical pieces by composers like Roland Dyens, Leo Brouwer, and Bach. On today's episode you'll Mike's take on arranging for the solo guitar, about his impactful and perspective changing run-in with Segovia, and overall I think you'll get the sense that it's never a bad idea to embrace those big life changes by taking those risky leaps into new realms, as Chapdelaine has done over and over again.
Traditionally, the great composers like Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven have also been virtuosos on their instruments- Bach on the organ, Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, and Brahms on the piano, Paganini on the violin. In the classical guitar world this connection between performer and composer is even stronger, almost to the point of requirement. The list includes almost every guitar/lute composer we know, from Dowland, Sanz, Da Milano, Mudarra, and de Murcia to Tárrega, Barrios, Giuliani, Sor, and the list goes on… In today's classical guitar world, among the most prolific and successful participants in this tradition of performer/composer is Roland Dyens. His compositions and arrangements have become an integral part of today's classical guitar repertoire. The maestro was kind enough to give me an hour of his time between concerts and flights to discuss his composition and arranging, his love for the music of Fernando Sor, his improvisations, and lots more.
