In the early morning hours of August 16th, 1986 an intruder entered the home of 27-year-old Gary Larson and stabbed him to death before raping Gary's fiancee. The case was unsolved for almost twenty years, until a peeping tom was arrested in 2004, when authorities noticed similarities to the suspect in the cold case. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss Jonathan Scott Graham. Graham had a history of peeping around his neighborhood. When he was arrested on something unrelated to the murder, the authorities noticed striking similarities to the murder of Gary Larson. However, another suspect had been identified and charged years prior. You can help support the show at patreon.com/truecrimeallthetimeVisit the show's website at truecrimeallthetime.com for contact, merchandise, and donation informationAn Emash Digital productionSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this episode, Ryan reflects on the unexpected inspiration he found in Gary Larson's comic strip The Far Side and how it shaped his journey in science and medicine. He explores themes of belonging, the value of embracing one's uniqueness in the scientific community, and the role of humor in bridging the gap between popular culture and medical practice. Actionable takeaways include finding community in unexpected places, harnessing humor as a tool for resilience, and confidently carving out one's space in the world of science. If you don't know who he is don't worry you will get an education here.Nostalgia is a powerful drug. That which was popular oftentimes comes back around decades later. Such was the case with Swing music. A staple of the American youth in the 1930s and 1940s it faded away with the emergence of Rock & Roll. However, by the 1990s, the country was ready for Swing music Round 2, and we'll go way Back In the Day to look at that brief Swing revival. The 1980s had more than its fair share of legendary movies. On episode of 165 of the Hardcore Archive Podcast, Greg is joined by Michael "Popeye" Vogelsang of Calling Hours and Farside.  Greg and Popeye discuss his introduce to hardcore in the 1980s, experiences he had attending hardcore shows in Orange County, and the influence early California hardcore bands like Hard Stance had on him.  The discussion also includes how Farside came together, notable shows that the band played, other notable bands that Farside shared members with, and how the band came to be affiliated with Revelation Records.  The conversation takes a detour from hardcore to discuss Popeye's work doing voice over work, and his career as a voice actor. Fun fact: if you have ever played through The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or Fallout 4, you are already familiar with his voice work. Greg and Popeye shift back to discussing hardcore, and we hear about Popeye's move from California to Pennsylvania, how Calling Hours came together, notable shows Calling Hours has played in recent months, and a tour of Europe Calling Hours is currently on with @BeWellHC.  This is great episode for fans of late 80s and early 90s hardcore, and for those of us who love classic @RevelationRecords bands, and confused fans of the Gary Larson comic who came to the wrong place.  This episode features two tracks after the credits from up and coming Rochester, NY hardcore bands. The first track is "The Squirming Mass of Teeth and Hair" by Debatably Stable. Debatably Stable will appeal to fans of post-hardcore bands like At the Drive In and Refused.

Detective Scott Day had been on the Edmond Police Force for just about 20 years. Close to his retirement, he could reflect back on his career and be proud of the work that he had done…all except for that one case from 18 years prior. He had been a rookie officer then, and the first to respond to the scene of a murder and a violent sexual assault. The case had gone unsolved and haunted the community. It was something that he thought about often. The house, the details, he could see the only survivor standing in the doorway of the house battered and covered in blood sobbing as he ran to her. That's why it was odd that there he was in 2004 and he stood again in front of a brick house with a large bush in front of a window on a suburban street. It was like deja vu….he got his bearings and looked around. He was actually only steps away from the house he responded to back in 1986. 2 Samuel 6: 1-15 // Tom NelsonWhere is lasting joy found? It is not found in managing God, lasting joy is found in the presence of God. Without God, there is no lasting joy. C.S. Lewis thought a lot about joy. One of his interesting insights I think he had about joy was the importance of proximity when it comes to experiencing joy. “If you want to get warm you must stand near the fire: if you want to be wet you must get into the water. If you want joy, power, peace, eternal life, you must get close to, or even into, the thing that has them.” Lewis is right, proximity matters, and so does presence. Joy flows in and through a close relationship with God himself. Without him, there is no lasting joy. Being yoked with Jesus leads us to a more attentive life, one that enjoys the presence of God and experiences lasting joy. He wants to show us the way. Will you trust him?Sermon Notes: https://www.bible.com/events/49088662 Prayer Requests: https://ccefc.ccbchurch.com/goto/forms/2509/responses/new23.06.18

This was a great episode for us here at Modern Day Sniper because we welcomed Mr. Gary Larson from the Guardian Long Range series. The Guardian series of events is 100% non-profit and all the proceeds of these events go towards local organizations to assist with disadvantaged kids in the foster care system. The cause behind these events is beyond admirable, and supporting these events means direct, actionable change for kids out there that didn't have a choice to be where they're at in their lives. Hell. It makes us all uncomfortable, so much so that we tend to make light of it by joking about its existence. We can thank Gary Larson, the creator of The Far Side Cartoons (do a quick Google search and enjoy a chuckle), for providing us with some of the most humorous depictions. Humor makes hell less scary. For me personally, I was surprised by how much the Saturday morning Looney Toons cartoons influenced my depictions of hell. It was always underground, with fire, and some person in a red suit with horns running around chasing Bugs Bunny with a pitchfork. Again, it made hell palatable. Little did I know, Looney Toons grabbed their ideas from fourteenth century Italian author Dante and his epic work, Inferno. This poem depicts Dante's journey through the nine concentric circles of torment in hell. This has been the standard for how many people, maybe even you think about hell. Unfortunately most of it is not how the Bible describes hell. What does the Bible say about hell? Even more specifically, what does Jesus teach on hell? On Sunday we are going to examine how the Scripture depicts hell. We will focus on these three themes: - What we know about hell. - Why hell is necessary. - How to ensure you don't go there.    As uncomfortable as it may be to wrestle with this topic, it is one we need to push into and understand. Here is the good news: Our loving God provided a way for no one to ever experience hell. To learn more, make sure and listen to part seven of Asking For A Friend.

As always, I asked my interviewee to nominate a book that would make us smile and what a choice it is! The. Far Side, by Gary Larson is one of those books you just can't put down and can't help but feel better for reading.  Well, it is choc-full of funny cartoons after all! Of course, being in a bar, we had bought ourselves a pint or two and we commence with the obligatory cheers… During this episode, I also mention the workshops we've introduced here at our studio.  Details of these can be found here on our website. Enjoy! Cheers P.
