Sometimes segments go as planned. And sometimes where they wind up surprises even us. Somehow Jason went from talking about a hole in the floor, to herbs, to the French horn. All with interesting stops in between!

The next entry in The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series is Chuck's chat with French horn player Alan Robinson, the man whose extraordinary playing graces “God Only Knows.” It's absolutely incredible what a photographic memory Alan possesses—listening to him speak, it's as if you're sitting there right beside him, watching Brian Wilson through the control room glass. This interview is an absolute must-hear for Pet Sounds fans.At 21, Alan became the youngest contract member of the 20th Century Fox orchestra, where he played on films like The King & I, Carousel and The Sound Of Music. In the mid-1960s, he discovered that "being a busy session player was more lucrative than symphonic work,” which is how he came to be on Pet Sounds. Among his other pop credits are sessions and/or live shows with Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Neil Diamond, Earth, Wind, & Fire, The 5th Dimension, Johnny Mathis, Elton John, and Paul McCartney & Wings. Norwegian hornist Frøydis Wekre has had a remarkable and influential career as both performer and teacher. She joined the Oslo Philharmonic at the age of 20, at a time when there were only two women in the orchestra, and went on to establish herself as a highly respected chamber musician, soloist, and educator. For many years, she served as a professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music, and her reach has extended far beyond Norway through the countless masterclasses she's given around the world. Widely regarded as one of the leading brass pedagogues of her generation, Frøydis has inspired students and professionals alike with her wisdom, insight, and artistry. In Part 1 of our conversation, we begin by discussing a metaphor from her book Collected Writings, in which she compares two types of teachers to a family doctor and a specialist—one who works with a student long-term, and another who is brought in to address a specific need. It's a concept that resonates deeply in the teaching world, and Frøydis shares how it has shaped her own approach to working with students. We also talk about her experience playing natural horn and explore the different national and cultural styles of horn playing that she has encountered throughout her career. The first part concludes with reflections on her studies with several legendary figures in the brass world: Vitali Bujanovsky, Wilhelm Lanzky-Otto, and James Stamp.[Subscriber Content] In Part 2, Froydis shares her perspective on international competitions, including thoughts on fairness and how such events might be improved. This leads into a broader conversation about women in music and how the landscape has changed—and in some ways, still needs to change—over the course of her career. We wrap up with a few light, miscellaneous questions, giving Frøydis the chance to reflect on her life and work with both humor and depth. It was a privilege to speak with someone who has not only shaped the horn world but continues to influence generations of musicians through her teaching, writing, and example.DoricoProfessional music notation and composition software from Steinberg. I was so touched by talking with today's guest. Erin has been an elementary school music teacher for more than 10 years. Music was an important part of Andy's life, whether he was singing in the choir or playing the piano, drums, or French Horn. I often wonder how music would have shaped his future growing up. Although Andy said he wanted to be a pilot, Eric always felt he would have become a music teacher instead. Music touched him in such a special way. Andy's elementary school music teacher was important in introducing him to his love for music, so I felt drawn to Erin immediately. Music played an important role in Erin's family life as well. After suffering from fertility struggles, Erin had a simple surgical procedure and quickly became pregnant with twins. As the twins grew, they both had Erin's love for music. They loved to dance and sing and Erin could see the joy that music brought to their lives. Then tragedy struck and 20-month-old Brennan died in his sleep a few days after being diagnosed with RSV. Erin didn't feel like she wanted to go on living. For months, Erin would go to bed at night secretly hoping that God make it so she did not wake up in the morning, but, each morning, Erin did wake up. People commented as to how strong she was, but Erin said she had no choice. She had to continue to be a wife to her husband and a mother to Avery so she kept going. This included returning to school and teaching music only days after Brennan died. Erin posted a picture of Brennan in her classroom and began to talk about him. Erin hopes that posting that picture will help others realize that she wants to talk about Brennan. In fact, I think she is an amazing example to others showing that it is healthy to talk about hard things like death, and not avoid them. People often wonder how Erin continues to work with kids every day after losing Brennan so suddenly, but Erin knows that is the best way to honor Brennan. Erin hasn't started a foundation or become a public speaker or done anything big and flashy. Erin teaches kids to love music just like Brennan did, and that is more than enough.
