So many of the negative messages we receive in childhood are implied rather than spoken aloud. But when they are sent again and again, especially from people who were designated to guide and nurture us, we can easily feel overwhelmed by shame.  In this episode, I am joined by my friend and pastor, Brian Dario. Brian will share how an absent biological father and stern stepfather made it confusing to understand where he belonged. He will share how well he used humor and athleticism to mask his insecurity about his height and misunderstood neurodivergence.  In this episode, you'll learn:  Why Brian struggled to navigate how to interact with peers in a social setting Why it was so difficult to accept discipline from Brian's step-dad How Brian felt misunderstood and forced to self-advocate as a child Why healing has empowered him to release criticism with more grace The qualities of Jesus that Brian was drawn to as a child Grab your copy of Lifted From Shame Order your eBook or print book on Amazon here. We wrap up our study of the book of Colossians by examining the Apostle Paul's final words as he lists all of those who have been encouraging and supporting him and the church while in prison. Many times, we rush past these lists of names at the close of Paul's letters, but those names are there for a reason and in this message, we examine each person and how they supported Paul and why they are listed. This gives us a great opportunity to think about all the people who have supported us and why surrounding ourselves with the right people is vital to our spiritual growth and maturity. A recent Barna survey found that 80% of the churches in North America are either plateaued or in decline and that over 1000 churches are closing their doors every month. Something is not right with the Church. As many churches face continual struggles with spiritual health and dysfunction, they strive to place blame and look for quick fixes. Maybe they need a new Pastor, or to add more flashy programs, or hire staff to attract younger people with many settling for all of the above in their desire to "fix" what is wrong. Most look to pragmatism or what might be working in other churches and strive to follow those leads by implementing change for the sake of change - change the name of the church, change the worship styles, change to ascetics of the facilities - and while all of those might offer short term solutions - they do not deal with the root cause of the problem. As long as a majority of church members or those in church leaders are not spiritually healthy in their own lives - the corporate church body will never find spiritual health. In our passage for today, the Apostle Paul not only diagnosis the root of the problem, but he also offers a prescription, and it is centered around the way church members treat one another and interact as the body.  Join this message to discover the role that each individual church member plays in the overall spiritual health of a church and why that is so important. But today, everyone has a social media platform at their disposal, which has generated seemingly countless online celebrities who gain hundreds of thousands, even millions, of followers through clever pranks, crazy antics, song and dance routines (literally), product endorsements, and more. Most people who use social media are not trying to become “social media influencers.” But how we use social media can easily turn into never-ending quests for personal significance, often leading to increased anxiety and depression as we subtly plead for other's attention and affirmation. In Jesus, however, we can find a significance that cannot be lost or diminished.More info https://www.ebc.org or call (609.267.4755), email (office@ebc.org), DM us on Instagram or Facebook, or come see us in person at Easton Bible Church. Thank you for subscribing and sharing.#eastonbiblechurch #hainesportnj #techsavvy #significance #sundaysermon #lovegodservepeople

In Colossians 1:26-27 the Apostle Paul mentions something that was a mystery in the Old Testament that has been revealed to those who are now Christians. In using this type of language, he rebukes the gnostic false teachers who were pushing the idea that a relationship with Jesus was not enough for salvation but rather you also needed to have a "special knowledge", or "secret knowledge" revealed to you. Sadly, the spirit of this Gnosticism is still alive in the church today as some in the church clamor and are drawn to anything promising to reveal a "secret". Paul explains what the real and only "secret" of the New Testament is and how it effects all believers and in turn shows how the truth of this "secret" should motivate all Christians to service in the church.  From Colossians 1:25-29. Thank you for listening to our podcast and we would love for you to subscribe to our page and share with others. Everyone seems to have an opinion when asked the question, "Who is Jesus?". It was this very question that Jesus asked his disciples in Matthew 16:13, "Who do people say that I am" and then "Who do you say that I am?". This question puzzled the early church and still brings confusion and division in many churches today. The Apostle Paul brings some clarity to the confusion in the Colossian church in our passage for today and his answer should help clear up any confusion for us as well. One of the factors that can lead to a Christian growing complacent and comfortable in their relationship with God is our failure to remember just what it was that God did in us, for us, and through us when we accepted His offer of redemption through Jesus Christ.  The Dangers of a complacent and comfortable church are self-evident all around us in what we see happening in the American church today. The same was true in the early church of Colossae. As the Apostle Paul introduces his letter to that church (and to its present-day counterpart) he couches his language in Thanksgiving as a rhetorical device to call them to remember all that Jesus had done for them and by doing so, allows them to reflect on the transformative power of Faith, Love , Hope and the Word of God to reignite their passion to grow and serve, as well as standing up to the false teachings in their midst. In this third episode of our four-part series, the team covers lie number three from the book Search For Significance. This lie tells us that because I have failed, I am unworthy and deserve to be punished. This lie results in self-loathing or blaming others for our failures. Consider a time when you have failed. Did you look inward, or did you blame somebody else for it, and you became the victim? If you took it upon yourself, did you look at the failure as an isolated incident, or did you turn it into a character trait or who you are? Did you find yourself saying anything to yourself like: If I fail, then I'm totally unworthy. I'm a failure. It's just who I am. I didn't just fail once. I am a failure. God's answer to this problem can be found in the Bible in a single word - proportion. So what does that word mean? It simply means God took on what our due punishment was for being sinners and released us from the debt of it. He came, loved us despite our failings and sin, and took our sins, shame, pain, and failures on the cross. He took all of that so that we could be released from it. He replaced our sin and shame with His love and righteousness. So when we live this lie of wanting to place blame, whether, on ourselves or someone else, somebody has to be punished for it. But we can free ourselves from that because God says, "You don't have to live under this anymore! When you feel unlovable, when you mess up, or when you fail. You don't have to punish yourself or anyone else for that! I took all that on me so you can be set free!" --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/notjustahashtag/support

In this second episode of our three-part series, the team covers lie number two from the book Search For Significance. This lie tells us that I must have the approval of certain people to feel good about myself. This is the lie of the approval addict, which results in fear of rejection. Many survivors find themselves in the trap of - I must be approved by others to be loved, have worth, and find identity. No matter how young or old we are, we are all just like the little child with the craving for acceptance and the hunger for approval. We all want to know the following: Am I ok? Do you see me? Is what I have done good enough? Do I matter to you? We all have two things in common: The need to be needed The need to be known by others We all wrestle with questions like: Do people see me? Do people understand me? This yearning in our hearts is why this episode is so important! We need to remind ourselves that God looks down upon us and says, "I see you, you are needed, you are known, and I am proud of you." We need to let God fill our hunger for approval and be our only source that meets all of our needs. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/notjustahashtag/support

52. The Lie of Perfectionism

In this first episode of our three-part series, the team covers lie number one from the book Search For Significance. This lie tells us that I must meet specific standards to feel good about myself. This is the lie of perfectionism or the lie that I must perform to be considered worthy. Many survivors find themselves in the trap of - I must perform a certain way to be loved, have worth, and find your identity. In addition, this way of thinking makes you believe that if I'm successful, I'm good enough or worthy of love. The problem with this mindset is it forces you to focus your attention on yourself or the trajectory of your life against others, making you self-absorbed and focused on all the wrong things. This is a trap that keeps you bound and unproductive. To walk in true freedom, you must believe in who God says Jesus is. Check out this episode to learn more about who God says Jesus is and what we receive when we believe in Him as our Redeemer. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/notjustahashtag/support
