The episode centers on a profound realization Larry had 12 years ago: he had become the "monster" he swore to protect his children from. Larry shares his vulnerable story of looking in the mirror and realizing his family didn't recognize him. He explains how business owners often use work as an excuse to avoid the difficult emotional labor required to be a present father and husband. Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Host Bev Livingston speaks with her guest, Lora McDonald, Executive Director of Metro Organization for Racial and Economic Equity, better known as “MORE Squared”.  Lora McDonald has served as a social worker in metropolitan Kansas City for three decades. In her early career, she worked in a Missouri state prison; licensed foster and adoptive families; and served youth who were street homeless. McDonald's career evolved to developing and implementing programs, ranging from crisis intervention with adoptive families to creating community gardens; more recently, McDonald was the architect of the Second Chance Program for people returning from incarceration.  While designing Second Chance, she would organize the Kansas City Metropolitan Reentry Coalition in order to address policies that impeded the success of people with criminal histories.  Around the same time, she was introduced to MORE2 and the National Leadership Training from the Gamaliel Network. She has been Ex. Dir of More² since 2012, and during that time, the organization has won many victories, expanded into Kansas, and sustained a significant ongoing public presence through a myriad of issues. Lora McDonald was the lead organizer who beat back a plan to collapse KCPS for an all-charter school model; she wrote the bill and led statewide organizing to win food stamps for people with drug convictions; and drove the campaign that established the first tenant's rights in Kansas City, Missouri with the passage of Healthy Homes. MORE2 is recognized as one of the leading organizations for police reform in the metro, specifically focused on accountability and transparency in Kansas City, Kansas, and local control of Kansas City Police Department. Bev and Lora will talk about the More² Gubernatorial Forum, Voting Rights for Formerly Incarcerated people and on June 2nd, a Jail Bill of Rights coming up before the legislature in Jackson County for a final vote. Then, Host Keith Brown El will talk with our NEW Host, Justice Johnson, about jails in Jackson County MO and Kansas City MO as we try to keep listeners informed of the changes being made in our local incarceration system. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society.  Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.

What does a healthy home actually look like? This Sunday, Pastor Jon walks through Ephesians 6:1–4 and shows us that healthy homes don't happen by accident—they're cultivated on purpose. Like a garden, your home needs attention, intention, and care. In this message, you'll discover how children and parents both play a role in building something that lasts—and how God designed your family to be a place where faith grows and lives are shaped.

Most families haven't stopped talking, they've just stopped talking to each other. The natural moments that used to create connection are gone, replaced by constant noise and distraction, and no one has really stepped in to lead what comes next. In this episode, Pastor Q breaks down why conversation in the home is fading, how digital life is quietly pulling people apart, and why this is less about technology and more about focus. He gets into what silence actually does inside a family, how it creates distance and insecurity, and why words, real face to face conversation, still carry the weight nothing else can. If things feel off at home and you can't quite name it, this will help you see it clearly and give you a simple way to start fixing it.

Housing advocates and residents of Wellington's "Devon Street Ditch," want an independent certification system so that landlords can't just "mark their own homework" and say that their properties meet healthy homes standards. Since July last year, it's been compulsory for all rental properties to be up to scratch with the standards, which set minimum requirements for heating, insulation, ventilation, moisture ingress and drainage. But with no qualification needed to tick off each of the standards, pretty much anyone is able to call themselves a healthy homes assessor. It's raised questions as to whether the standards are doing what they're meant to - ensure rental properties are safe, warm and dry. Bella Craig reports.

An interview with Dr. Eva KingOur homes are indoor environments of our own making. These environments exist to make our lives better but often unintentionally expose us to contaminants—chemical and microbial—that harm our health and wellbeing. For genetically susceptible individuals, these routine exposures can trigger a breakdown in the body's natural tolerance, leading to chronic inflammatory and neurological symptoms such as CIRS, TILT, and PANS/PANDAS. In a sadly apt metaphor, we are the canaries and our home is the coal mine. Today, we are joined by a frontline expert in this field, Dr. Eva King. Eva holds a Masters in Biochemistry and a Doctorate in Immunology/Epidemiology from the University of Oxford. She has dedicated more than two decades investigating the intersection of indoor environments and human health. Her focus is helping clients with underlying medical conditions identify and address building-related issues that contribute to their health problems. This interview is fuel for the journey to flip our indoor environments from being a major contributor to chronic disease to becoming a primary solution. This is a central and sobering topic for all of us with agency in the AEC. Buckle up, folks, because this weekend's Around the House Show is going to be a wild ride! We're bringing back the A-team: former co-host and America's Healthy Home expert Caroline Blazovsky joins the dynamic duo of Eric G. and John Dudley. That's right, the dream team is back, and they're diving headfirst into the absurdity of home safety regulations. Ever wondered why your mattress has to be fireproof? Well, it turns out it's all because of one person who decided to light up in bed—thanks a lot, random statistic! Expect some eye-rolling sarcasm as we dissect the ridiculousness of these regulations that dictate our lives. Seriously, who thought it was a good idea to spray chemicals on our mattresses because someone dropped the ball on fire safety? Welcome to the world of home improvements where logic often takes a backseat to paranoia. But wait, there's more! In the second hour, we'll shift gears and tackle the riveting world of home ventilation systems with Ken Nelson from Panasonic Ecosystems. Get ready to hear about forehead dusters—yes, that's what we call the fancy gadgets that do little more than push stale air around. Spoiler alert: they don't actually remove moisture; they just distribute it like a bad cologne. Corinna Bellizzi discusses what it takes to create healthful living spaces with Paul Kealey, founder and president of EkoBuilt. As head of North America's most advanced sustainable homebuilding company, he exposes why modern building codes are actually failing our health, from poor indoor air quality to serious mold growth. Paul also presents how a passive house offers a good alternative by perfectly marrying cost-effectiveness and a healthy environment. Find out how simple changes can turn your home from a space that could kill you slowly to a place of health and comfort. But health experts isn't necessarily the first thing that comes to mind when a home buyer goes to book a home inspection prior to buying a home. However, what if they could be? Home inspectors see more homes inside and out than almost any profession in the real estate industry second only to realtors. What if we were trained to not only identify structural and major system issues, but also potential environmental health issues? As building science begins to dominate discussions around real estate and residential construction, the way we think about health intersects directly as we continue to learn to view a home as one major system. Air leaks, poor or improper ventilation, and moisture intrusion can all factor into mold growth. Proper site location can affect a home owner's health long before the home even exists. Illness is often the final symptom of factors that have existed long before the human body even knows there's an issue. We already test for radon... so what if we learned to look out for common sense issues that could allow us to not just advocate for home buyers... but also for their long-term health? Cristina Greenfield, of Conscious Healthy Home, has some ideas as to how we can do just that.
