We have covered before how the fossil fuel industry created the advertorial and how it continues work with media on the modern incarnation: sponsored content, created by the media outlets themselves. To be clear, it's outlets' internal brand studios that write op-eds, craft slide shows and videos, and produce podcasts for fossil fuel companies, not their editorial staff. But these services are explicitly marketed as a way to make corporate content mirror the editorial content in style and approach, and when it comes to fossil fuel advertisers it often directly contradicts what the editorial staff is reporting. In late 2023, we published a report detailing the many examples of this and delving into the peer-reviewed research that shows how misleading this practice is to readers. This week, one of the researchers who has contributed the most to that body of evidence, Dr. Michelle Amazeen, at Boston University, published a new study looking at why this practice is particularly misleading on social media, and what media outlets might be able to do to make it less so. The United States State Department is being sued by a pair of conservative media outlets, along with the state of Texas, for what they perceive as illegal censorship. The lawsuit includes outlets like 'The Federalist' and 'The Daily Wire' who say the State Department uses censorship technology to steer traffic away from their news sites redirecting audiences to sites more favorable to opposing views. According to reports, President Joe Biden has vowed to sign the bill into law if the bill ultimately passes the House and Senate and arrives at his desk. Or is the risk of Chinese leadership gaining access to American user data too great to respect individual autonomy and free markets? Senator Elizabeth Warren has suggested that the proposed bill doesn't go far enough to prevent social media's influence, explaining that she wants “curbs in place on social media across the board,” according to Politico.   While appearing on MSNBC with Katy Tur, Vaughn Hillyard claimed that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's campaign is so cash strapped that they may not be able to afford to host rallies moving forward. Rebecca Davis O'Brien of The New York Times reports: “Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has recently approached the N.F.L. quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the former Minnesota governor and professional wrestler Jesse Ventura about serving as his running mate on an independent presidential ticket, and both have welcomed the overtures, two people familiar with the discussions said. Mr. Kennedy confirmed on Tuesday that the two men were at the top of his list. It is not clear if either has been formally offered the post, however, and Mr. Kennedy is still considering a shortlist of potential candidates, the people familiar with the discussions said.
