Alison Burgos is the co- founder of Seed Food & Wine Festival. When she became diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in 2008, she was confined to a wheelchair from 2011 to 2012, then underwent knee replacement surgery, followed by six months of physical rehabilitation to be able to walk again. Becoming more conscious of what she put into her body, she began consuming more fruits and vegetables, until adopting the plant-based diet she eats today. Realizing that changing her diet had put the spring back in her step, along with her wife Michelle Gaber and Burgos saw the opportunity to teach others how to eat their way to better health. As a foodie, and highly aware of the burgeoning foodie scene in Miami, they realized that with Burgos extensive experience as an event producer, that organizing the first of its kind plant-based food and wine festival was the best way to educate as well as enlighten others.

Plants are a powerful source of healing and this week, host Lindsay DeLong sits down with a woman who has experienced their benefits both in her personal and professional life. Alison Burgos is the co-founder of SEED Food & Wine festival, a week-long celebration that highlights the benefits of plant-based living, wellness, and wine (for obvious reasons). It also boasts some of the biggest names in plant-based wellness (hi Moby!) and regularly draws over 10,000 health conscious peeps to its events. Alison’s story is incredibly inspiring, as she healed her own crippling rheumatoid arthritis through a raw plant-based diet. Yep, really! Join us this week as we sit down with this walking wellness Wikipedia and chat the best plant-based medicine, Netflix health docos, and how to run your own wellness festival. (Best enjoyed with a kale salad.)
Alison Burgos wasn’t always into plant-based food. In fact, she didn’t enjoy vegan food at all! It took a severe health condition to get her to completely re-think her lifestyle. At just forty years old, Alison was morbidly obese and confined to a wheelchair. Rheumatoid arthritis had attacked her joints to such a degree that she couldn’t move without excruciating pain. The best doctors in the world prescribed steroids and drugs, but did nothing to combat the inflammation. At her wit’s end, Alison decided to take matters into her own hands and, with her wife and friends’ support, went on a 90-day raw cleanse. Her inflammation disappeared. What started as a personal health journey has turned into a desire to help others make conscious choices about what they eat, and see how positive and powerful those choices can be. The Seed, Food and Wine festival was born. And we’re so excited to invite you to join us there. The Seed Food & Wine LA and Eat Drink Vegan events are happening THIS WEEK, May 23rd to 26th. It’s more than just a festival, it’s a movement driven by passionate people dedicated to raising awareness around veganism, holistic health, sustainability and animal welfare. Their mission is to elevate the conversation and get people connected to the transformational power of food. All your favorite vegan content creators will be there, as well as the country’s best plant-based chefs, artists, designers, influencers and authors. Get ready for delicious vegan food (plus wine, and cocktails!), talks, presentations, cooking demos, inspiration and lots of fun live events… oh and a ton of free swag! In this episode, Jeanette and I talk about our experience at the 2nd annual Seed Food & Wine Festival (or as Jeanette likes to call it, the Super Bowl for Vegans) held in Mana Wynwood. This year Seed was bigger and better than the year before with top-notch speakers, cooking demonstrations, a Burger Battle, so many wonderful plant-based and vegan restaurants and vendors and much, much more. We were happy to see all of the people who came out to support this event and thankful to all of the participants who are doing their part to raise the awareness and consciousness of this plant-based movement. To see behind the scenes photos, show notes and more visit www.plantedinmiami.com. As with most drastic changes in life, the impetus arrives through necessity. Just years after Alison Burgo’s acquired a debilitating auto-immune disease, her life’s work of charity and event planning took on an entirely different meaning. Witnessing first hand the power of healing foods and the bodies ability to heal itself under the right conditions, Alison alongside her partner and wife, Michelle, founded the Seed Food and Wine Festival, the first 100% plant-based food festival in the country. Now approaching it’s second year, this year’s festival promises to be bigger and better with more events that invite the community to experience the plant-based lifestyle on an entirely different level. Because Miami is known for trendsetting parties and restaurants, Seed has invited chefs from all walks of life to participate and show that eating your veggies can be really sexy. There is definitely something for everyone this year with events ranging from burger battles to movie night, a 5k run, yoga classes, elegant dinners and more. Alison’s passion for planting seeds of change in the city is apparent in everything she does. Her enthusiasm is contagious and we can't wait for you to hear this interview. For behind the scenes photos, show notes and more, visit our website at www.plantedinmiami.com Follow us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter @plantedinmiami
