Employees of a multistate rehab company have been left in the dark after several facilities shut across the country following the suicides of the two top executives.  Retreat Behavioral Health, which has facilities in Florida, Philadelphia and Connecticut, abruptly closed their facility in Palm Beach, Florida, last week.  Employees told WPTV that around 100 mental health and substance use patients were told to pack up and leave, including 30 who had nowhere to go.  Facilities in Lancaster County, PA, and New Haven, CT, have also since shuttered following the deaths of CEO Peter Schorr and CAO Scott Korogodsky.  Korogodsky had taken up the leadership of the company after Schorr killed himself at his home in Delray Beach, according to LancasterOnline.

They forget to send out an email about it, make a social media post about it, post it on their website, or even mention it beyond their personal circle of friends. Nobody knows they were on TV, and they don't help get the word out. Avoid this popular PR mistake. If someone promotes you - on their channel, podcast, in their newsletter or magazine, etc - share it far and wide. This is a great opportunity to ask yourself - where was I featured recently, and who have I told about it? Who could I tell about it? Who needs to know about this? I don't check up on them. As long as you're hitting those goals, I don't care. I don't care what you wear, when you work,  where you went to college, how many hours you worked. Is the client happy, and are you happy? Perfect! We just do our jobs. We're all adults. We don't need to be babysat. We just get things done.” “With our clients, we don't have a whole onboarding thing for weeks. We have one call - what are your goals? What do you want to see? What do you want? What is the short term goal and end goal? Then we go and execute that day. All this talking, planning and researching - it has a place! But in PR when we're trying to get you coverage, we don't waste time.” “We give our clients updates every week. It's so important to send them an email every week - this is what we did, this is what worked, this is what didn't work. We think we're gonna go this way next week and we need your help with XYZ.” “Stop telling yourself you're not ready for it. A lot of women do this. They make all kinds of excuses. You're putting the cart before the horse. The way you get more money, a bigger brand, more leads and a bigger email list - you get this by being in front of people. You get the attention first, then the leads come in. So many people get this backwards.” “After you get coverage, please - share it, and share it everywhere! In 2011, a local Florida man was ambushed while taking a shower in his Jupiter, Florida home. The two other people in the house at the time happened to be his ex-wife and their son. As the investigation progressed, both mother and son claimed they were innocent while pointing the finger at one another. Loser: Police deputy Steven O'Leary in Martin County, Florida Martin County Sheriff William Snyder says 11 people have been released from the jail based on actions surrounding a fired deputy. Deputy Steven O'Leary was let go after it was determined that the deputy had submitted evidence in drug cases that turned out not to be illegal drugs. One man sat inside a Florida jail for six weeks for a crime he didn't commit. The charge was trafficking heroin - but he actually had laundry detergent with him at the time. Jon Shainman for NBC affiliate, WPTV, has more on what police are saying.   Winner Steven Pruitt He's the number one wizard of Wikipedia - the top editor on the website, who has been dedicating his free time to the site for 13 years. Christina has always looked telling stories through media, she’s someone that likes to hear, read, or watch a good story. The things that resonate online are stories. She started writing stories from an early age and now her daughter is following in her footsteps. Being in the media has always been something that Christina has wanted to do, even when she was child in her family’s home movies she pretended to be a news anchor covering the story. Traditional TV media is a very competitive industry with only a handful of positions available in a large city. Christina spent hundreds of dollars sending her resume tapes to studios in different markets and she didn’t get her first job offer until two years of effort. Is themedia more competitive today? Media isn’t necessarily harder or easier than it was years ago, it’s just different. In the beginning, you would have a photographer that would follow you around, today, you are responsible for everything yourself. The nature of media has changed, what used to be earned media in editorial is slowly turning to paid. This is why influencer marketing is picking up. If something is obviously an ad, the audience is going to ignore it. You have to be savvy with social media and be everywhere all the time to succeed in today’s media environment. Has does an entrepreneur attract attention to get their story out? The biggest secret to getting earned media coverage without spending money is to give the journalist what they want and need, when they want and need it. Your pitch should talk about the journalist and what you can do for them, not what makes you so important. You have to ask why people will care. A lot of coverage comes from timeliness, it creates a sense of urgency around the story. What if someone is afraid of being on camera? You don’t have to be on TV, you can be on print, online, and on podcasts. There are lots of different kinds of media that don’t require you to get in front of a camera. If you want to reach more people, you have to get comfortable in front of the camera. Start with videos at home and get some practice in. Any interview on TV is just a conversation, just like when you’re on a podcast. What does it take to get earned media? A lot of people will call you promising to get you into the media, but they are actually just advertisements. Earned media can’t be guaranteed. Be careful of someone that is promising you something. Pay attention to what is breaking in your industry, if you position yourself correctly you can get into the media in a single day. You have to be pitching different people with different ideas so that you don’t come off to spammy. Journalists are on Twitter, if you want to build relationships you should engage them on where they spend a lot of their time. Get clear on where the ROI is and who you need to get in front of, then ask what media serves that purpose. Start building your media list and adding value to the journalist to build a relationship

What a fun podcast this was with Jason Hackett of WPTV!!! Jason and I yuck it up throughout pretty much the entire thing! We met up at the Vivid Arts App kickoff party for previous guests, EGee Labs, at Le Rendez-vous, and simply had a great time. His spoke very affectionately about every crew he’s worked with, acknowledged that he has a responsibility on air as a black role model, and LOVED (not!) that I found out which fun kids’ spot he worked at in his early years. We took a pretty serious turn early in the discussion to talk about Corey Jones—the latest case focusing the national discussion of excessive force by police. All of these stories from Zimmerman to Ferguson on forward have hit close to home for both of us; but, now it was actually in our own backyard. His coverage of the peaceful rally of family, friends, and other supporters of Corey Jones was exceptional, and his take on it from his various perspectives was highly insightful. In the end, he turned the tables on me with a question that lead to a complete and utter GEEK OUT by us both, and I’m still stunned that he knew as much on that topic as I do. So, you’ll have to wait for that little nugget of podcast goodness. But, his facial expressions (and the adult beverage I was sipping on) had me laughing through the entire conversation. Instead he brings a comedic approach honed by working the stand-up routines in Chicago, with an eye for detail for the written word developed through his study at Northwestern University's prestigious Medill School of Journalism. Two distinctly different specialisms, which complement each other perfectly. But as we see time and time again where someone ends up, displaying what seem like god given talents, is quite often the last place that they envisioned at the beginning of their career. Jay has been a part of south Florida’s news scene for nearly 14 years now (Happy Almost Anniversary, Jay!), and is currently an anchor for both WPTV News Channel 5 and WFLX Fox 29. In our chat, Jay gives some really inspirational insights into how he pursued his career and was able to break into such a huge, hot market.  He is so appreciative of the opportunities that being a newsman in south Florida have brought him, takes every opportunity to give back, and shies away from the “local celebrity” label. His love of the news led him to an opportunity to explore his other passion—aviation; but, what happened that day is something you just have to hear for yourself!!
