In my professional career helping others in the world of peak performance, there are a number of quick-fix techniques that work every time and work instantly if they are properly applied with 100% commitment. Mental conditioning is similar to physical conditioning, the more you do it the more obvious the benefits become. However, within the mind, there are shortcuts we can apply in stressful situations that will bring immediate relief and help us reset. There is no shortcut to excellence as the old saying goes "What you put in is what you get out".Many world-class chefs have developed techniques in the kitchen that save them a great deal of time and can produce very acceptable results, the same is true in many other professions where effective shortcuts produce acceptable results, golf psychology is no different. In this week's podcast, I share my five top quick-fix mental conditioning hacks you can apply on the course with immediate effect. The only thing you have to do is apply them, believe in them and commit to them.

How are you supposed to reach that left hand chord? You know the one I mean. It goes by a lot of different names, a root-position triad in open spacing, a 1-5-3 chord, or maybe just the chord you can't ever place accurately. Certainly when we first encounter the chord, it's a stretch for our hands, but eventually most of us can manage it without too much difficulty. When we place and play the chord well, it sounds warm and rich. Because it's a big reach, though, it's often a challenge to get to the right notes at the right time and play them without hitting neighboring strings. And that's a problem because this combination of notes is everywhere in harp music. We encounter it sometimes as a chord, sometimes as an arpeggio. In fact, I often call this the “left hand master chord,” because it is the one chord that, when we master it, solves playing difficulties in so many pieces. We don't want to have to spend our practice time negotiating this chord in each new piece we learn. Once you have discovered the placing techniques that work for your hand, you can apply them easily every time. So today I'm going to try to help you reach that unreachable chord. You won't need to stretch your hand or your fingers; that's not healthy for you anyway. I'll give you my best strategies for placing and playing this chord or arpeggio accurately, comfortably and beautifully. By the way, there's an extra bonus here. You'll find these techniques work for those larger right hand chords too. There's a new Hollywood drug on the scene, but it's not a party drug, it's a frug that is used to treat diabetes. People are looking to Ozempic and similar drugs used to treat Type 2 as a quick fix for weight loss. These drugs have an ingredient called semaglutide which stimulates insulin production, but also targets areas of the brain that regulate appetite. Sara Ashley O'Brien, reporter at the WSJ, joins us for how doctors are urging caution as it is gaining in popularity. Next, scientists have transplanted clumps of cells that resemble the brain into rats with the hopes that it could help study autism, epilepsy, and schizophrenia. The experiments involve a new technique that takes skin cells and changes them into stem cells. These cells where then implanted into the rat brains and they quickly formed connections. Mark Johnson, science reporter at The Washington Post, joins us for how it works and the ethical concerns behind it. Finally, the housing market has cooled, and crazy bidding wars are over. For those still trying to sell their homes, they are remodeling properties to avoid cutting prices, but not all projects have equal pay off. To get the most bang for your buck, you'll want to refinish hard-wood flooring, install new wood flooring, or give the home an insulation upgrade. Veronica Dagher, personal finance reporter at the WSJ, joins us for the repairs that will help sell your home.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
What do we do when things fall apart? The way we answer this question shows us the truth of who we are. We all look great when things are comfortable. It's in the times of challenge, when the building is burning down around us, when all that we've held onto dissolves in our arms, that our true allegiance, our true character, our true identity get revealed. We are busy people living in a busy world, and it causes us to seek life in the rapid and immediate. Yet our culture seems more anxious, lonely, and depressed than we ever have - our insta-culture is failing to provide us the lasting life we're looking for. Listen as Pastor Clint explores the life of Jeremiah, which served as a salve to the futile, shallow pursuits of his own world and led Jeremiah to a robust, holistic, meaningful life. As it turns out, true life doesn't come through the rapid and immediate: it comes through a long obedience in the same direction. Sermon Resources: 1. In today's quick fix I let you know why you need to learn to love and get excited about life's hardships --- Rough episode transcript --- If you're listening to this podcast then I know that you're into improving yourself and truly stepping into your greatness, and I can bet that you've been practicing. Maybe it's meditating or journaling or being grateful or facing your fears or practicing humility. Whatever it is, this message for you. WHEN STUFF HITS THE FAN IN LIFE, WHICH HAPPENS AND WILL NEVER STOP HAPPENING UNTIL YOU'RE DEAD, YOU NEED TO BE PSYCHED ABOUT IT! Hear me out. You've been doing all of these things to improve yourself. You've been finding your strength, uncovering your gifts, revealing your mission and purpose. You've been practicing getting organized and being compassionate and having courage. You've been listening to podcasts and reading books and attending retreats and buying courses. All of these things have been your training, and none of it matters when life is going smoothly. When life is great and everything is working out in your favor and the tides are rising, you're not asked to be courageous and humble and intelligent and mature. It's only when things go south, when life smacks you in the face with circumstances, that your training is put to the test. So, you have to start relating to life's circumstances as GAME TIME! Seriously. When you create a fender bender on the way to work, or your kitchen floods, or your kid does something dumb and gets arrested, or your baby won't stop crying, or your partner is withholding love — THAT is when you will really get a chance to see how far you've come. It's in those moments that all the reps you've put in reading and meditating and working on yourself matter. Because when you're able to respond differently to a situation that you've responded to the same way your whole life, you've just won and you've stepped your game up just a little bit. So get excited when things go south, because it's in these moments when you actually have an opportunity to grow. As I say all the time, HAVING IT ALL is about your relationship to life and what it serves up, so next time you're presented with a circumstance that sucks, remember that's it's an opportunity to grow into a greater version of yourself. That's it for today. * LEAVE ME A REVIEW ON APPLE PODCASTS: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/having-it-all-conversations-about-living-an-abundant/id1093257684 * CHECK OUT THE ENTIRE HIA PODCAST CATALOGUE: https://podcast.matthewbivens.com/ * LEARN ABOUT MY COACHING PROGRAMS: https://www.matthewbivens.com/coaching/ * SEND ME A QUESTION: firstname.lastname@example.org

I can almost always tell the skill level of a harp student by the way they use their fourth finger. It's not the strength of the finger or a lack of coordination. A less advanced player simply avoids using it. It shouldn't surprise you if you give it a moment's thought. Remember back to the very first pieces you learned on the harp, at whatever age you were when you started. They used mostly the thumb and second finger. You learned to place them together and to play them simultaneously and one after the other. Then you added the third finger which brought the additional pleasure (and challenge) of three-note chords. Placing, whether for a chord or a scale passage, was not just one additional finger harder; it was exponentially more difficult. It's likely that as you were learning these pieces you were also practicing scales and arpeggios and even etudes that used the fourth finger. But just because you were learning them didn't mean your fourth finger was flexible, strong and secure. You probably only discovered how backward your fourth finger was when you began to learn four-note chords. Placing three-note chords was hard, but you mastered it fairly quickly. Four-note chords on the other hand - well, it would be nice if you had another hand. Talk about slowing down progress. Your technique development may have seemed to come to a complete stop. Even for those of us who have suffered, struggled and come out on the other side of the fourth finger fumbles, our fourth fingers still can be a source of frustration. They are too long or too short, too loud or too soft, too unpredictable and unreliable. Today's quick fix episode is dedicated to your fourth finger and to all of us who fight the fourth finger fumbles on a daily basis. We'll look at several of the most common fourth finger issues and how to resolve them. While some of our discussion will come back to basic good harp technique, I will be sharing my favorite fixes that are specific to your fourth finger. For instance, did you know that some of the frustration you're feeling toward your fourth finger, may really be the fault of your pinkie? I can't wait to share that tip with you! If you want your business to be successful, you need to treat your relationships with your clients like a marathon, not a sprint. What does that mean?
