An Adventure Podcast Discovering Lake Superior's North Shore.
2024 has seen a lot of changes along the North Shore. Some businesses closed, new businesses opened. Whole buildings have been demolished and new buildings added. It can be hard to keep up with all of the changes! In this episode, Jaye and Martha visit some of the new businesses that have sprung up in the past year. Up in Hovland, Objects to Crave opened late in the summer of 2023 and brought a unique, eclectic twist on the traditional North Shore gift shop. Back in Grand Marais, Abby Tofte (of The Big Lake) has purchased the former Gunflint Mercantil store and transformed it into two shops: the Lady Superior Non-Alcoholic Bottle Shop and Harbortown Goods gift shop. Listen in to learn about these changes and more that will greet you on your next trip to Lake Superior's North Shore. * Learn More... 2023 really was a big year for Sisu + Loyly! Just when we thought Sisu + Loyly couldn't possibly make the sauna experience in Cook County any better, they went above and beyond with their floating sauna! Launched in September 2023, the floating sauna may very well be the first commercial floating sauna in the USA! It is currently home-based at Skyport Lodge on Devil Track Lake, and reservations are open! As the floating sauna was launched late in the season, only a lucky few will be able to experience it until winter comes and the floating sauna has to go away until next summer. If you're planning a Fall Colors adventure on the North Shore in 2023, consider adding a lovely floating sauna into your plans. Learn More... It's Pride Month, so we've been taking in all the North Shore activities. One of those activities included an exclusive screening of Matthew Baxley's new film, Rainbows in the Wilderness. This film is about 9 strangers who share a common bond going into the BWCA, some for the first time. If Matthew's voice sounds familiar, he's been on the podcast before. Remember the Haunted House episode? It's definitely a classic! Welcome Matthew back to the podcast for this interview about his new film. Learn More... Welcome to Part 2 of our North Shore Breweries series. In this multi-part series, we will introduce you to some of our favorite local breweries, starting in Duluth. This episode features two great Duluth Breweries: Bent Paddle Brewing and Lake Superior Brewing. * Located in the Lincoln Park Craft District, Bent Paddle Brewing Company helped to revitalize Duluth's west end. Their beautiful spacious taproom gives you plenty of room to enjoy their great brews. We tried a flight of beers and interviewed one of the founders, Laura. Then, we hopped over to Lake Superior Brewing Company, all the way over in Duluth's East Lakeside neighborhood. They are still working out their first round of brews since reopening late last year, so we sampled some of the amazing menu items. * Learn More... Around 11:30 AM on April 10, 2023, a fire broke out at Sydney's Frozen Custard & Wood-Fired Pizza. On what was otherwise a beautiful spring day in Grand Marais, Minnesota. Responding fire departments fought the fire for over two hours, extinguishing it around 1:30 PM. Unfortunately, the intense fire destroyed the interior of this beloved downtown eatery. In this week's blog post, we reflect back on the history of this seasonal favorite. Welcome to Part 1 of our North Shore Breweries series. In this multi-part series we will introduce you to some of our favorite local breweries, starting in Duluth. This episode features two great Duluth Breweries: Canal Park Brewing Company and Blacklist Brewing Company. * Located in Canal Park (hence the name), Canal Park Brewing Company is a full restaurant experience with dozens of great beers on tap. We tried a flight of beers and ciders and then ate the best brussels sprouts either of us have ever tasted. Then, we hopped over to downtown Duluth to Blacklist Brewing Company. March 23, 2023, brought an incredible Northern Lights experience to everyone on the North Shore who happened to look or be outside. The lights were clearly visible to the naked eye all over Minnesota that day, but especially on the northernmost part of the state. In this episode, Jaye and Martha take a drive out to Saganaga Lake at the end of the Gunflint Trail to see the incredible show in the sky that night. We discuss what the Northern Lights are, how and when to see them, and where to go. While the show on the 23rd was possibly once-in-a-lifetime as far as the intensity goes, the Northern Lights can be seen periodically at all times of the year. * Follow us on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@staycvr Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/exploringnorthshore/?hl=en Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/exploringnorthshore/ * This episode is sponsored by Cascade Vacation Rentals: https://www.cascadevacationrentals.com/

The airport also offers private scenic flights that you can do during your next trip to Lake Superior's North Shore. Just imagine chasing waterfalls or enjoying the fall colors from above. In this episode of Exploring the North Shore, Jaye and Martha are joined by Martha's longtime best friend, Cecilia, to get to know the airport better. Martha and Cecilia take a flight to capture some amazing aerial footage and to experience a sightseeing flight themselves. *** The Cook County Airport will have a website soon, but it's currently under construction. Oftentimes, when someone recounts their adventures in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA) they talk about the distance they traveled and all of the lakes they visited. They might say they went 9 miles and four portages deep on day one. While this is a common way to travel through the BWCA, it's not necessarily the best way. Oftentimes, you miss the things that make the BWCA such a unique and wonderful place. The sights, the sounds, and the untouched wilderness. Going on a Mindful Paddle with Points Unknown is the perfect way to slow down, relax a little, and really experience the BWCA. And, it is also, a fantastic way to learn about the history and the beauty of this vast wilderness area from a guide who knows the area well. *** Learn More From Points Unknown: https://www.points-unknown.com/mindful_paddle_hike/ Learn More on Exploring the North Shore: https://exploringnorthshore.com/mindful-paddle-with-points-unknown/ Exploring the North Shore Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/exploringnorthshore/ Exploring the North Shore Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/exploringnorthshore ETNS/Cascade Vacation Rentals TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@staycvr *** This episode is sponsored by Cascade Vacation Rentals.

Happy Spooky Month! It's our favorite time of the year and it was made even better this year with the return of the Duluth Haunted Ship! For three long years, we have been awaiting the return of the ghosts and ghouls that appear on the William A Irvin every October. The haunting was canceled in 2018 when the ship was moved to dry dock for repairs. She didn't return until mid-October 2019 which was not enough time to hold the haunting. Then, 2020... well, you know. But here, in October of 2021, the Haunted Ship is back! * In this episode, Jaye and Martha interview Dave, the man in charge. Then, they interview Joe, one of the Haunted Ship's lead actors. They learn about the inner workings of the Duluth Haunted Ship before coming aboard ourselves. While in line, Jaye and Martha befriend a group of pre-teen and teenage girls who you will get to hear a lot of during the tour of the ship. So. Many. Screams. Clips of Jaye and Martha's individual recordings of themselves going through the ship reveal the highlights and terrors found within. * The Duluth Haunted ship will terrify visitors through Halloween night. Gem House is one of the newest vacation rentals offered by Cascade Vacation Rentals. This beautiful home boasts a gorgeous amethyst fireplace that enthralled our TikTok followers (39K views and counting). So, we decided to spend the night at Gem House and feature all of the amazing things you can do right within walking distance (or a short drive) of the home. Plus, we sat in front of the amethyst fireplace. A lot. *** In this episode, we visited Naniboujou Lodge for breakfast, hiked to the Devil's Kettle to see the waterfall during the low-water period caused by the recent drought, and then went geocaching out to a Lake Superior island. Plus, we enjoyed a few hours in the ENO Triple Hammock stand enjoying a beautiful summer afternoon on Lake Superior's North Shore. *** This episode also includes our first Guest Feature! Burlington Station- Burlington Boutique and Callie's Sweets is a new business located on the east end of Two Harbors. This side is the Burlington Boutique. On the other side, you'll find a vintage 1950s diner scene. Complete with black and white checkered floors and seafoam blue booths. Recently, we had a TikTok get... well, a lot more views than we're used to getting. The video, which showed a mysterious white creature in the woods, garnered way more attention than I expected or was prepared for. After seeing the interest in "the thing in the woods" we reached out to the woman who created it to learn more about the animal hiding in the woods around Grand Marais. The mysterious white animal is actually a woodland caribou made out of metal rebar and burlap. He's one of three parts to the new art installation called "Once and Future" by artist Corrie Steckelberg. In this interview, we learn more about the "Once and Forever" art installation and what went into creating these life-sized caribou sculptures. ** Watch the TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@staycvr/video/6964195193335729413 Check Out Corrie's Website: https://www.wulfhelm.com/ Check Out Corrie's Instagram For More Work: https://www.instagram.com/wulfhelm.art/ Read Our Article: https://www.exploringnorthshore.com/once-and-future/ ** This episode is sponsored by Cascade Vacation Rentals. We didn't mean for this episode to be broken into two like this, but we just got so into the history of the Aerial Lift Bridge and the William A Irvin ship that it started getting a bit long! Waterfall Season is underway along the North Shore and Jaye and Martha weren't going to miss it this year! In this episode, we visit Cascade River State Park, Temperance River State Park, plus the Cross River Falls and Caribou Falls to check on the status of the waterfalls. Waterfall Season is pretty short-lived up here, running from the end of March to mid-April most years. Tune in to hear why we haven't been able to release a new episode since August (sorry!) and how the podcast will look going forward. Then, Jaye and Martha share a few fall adventures they've gone on. Jaye turned downtown Grand Marais into Diagon Alley for her kids' homeschool class. Then, Jaye and Martha recount their trip to the abandoned Cramer Tunnel. You may have noticed that Exploring the North Shore did not have a new episode 2 weeks ago, as scheduled. We decided to observe "Black Out Tuesday" that week and did not release the episode we were working on in observation of the Black Lives Matter movement and everything happening in Minnesota and around the world. We support BLM, we support the protesters, and we support equality for all POC. We give our statement at the start of this episode. *Then, Martha and Jaye head into the BWCA! Starting at Sawbill Canoe Outfitters at the end of the Sawbill Trail, owner Dan Shirley guides the ladies through the outfitting process. Then, they head out onto Sawbill Lake on what was meant to be a 3-lake journey into the BWCA. That's not exactly what happened! Listened to find out how the trip really went in this week's episode of Exploring the North Shore.*This episode is sponsored by Cascade Vacation Rentals. MARTHA IS BACK! And times have certainly changed! The Stay at Home Orders for the State of Minnesota expired on May 18. So we decided to take a look at how things will be on the North Shore for those coming up for a visit in the Summer of 2020. Then, we went to the mid-Gunflint Trail area to interview Carl Madsen, owner of the Rockwood Lodge on Poplar Lake. Carl has adapted some policy changes in the wake of COVID-19 that resemble other changes being made in the area. Listen and learn how you can enjoy the North Shore safely this summer. If you are planning a trip into the BWCA this summer, check out Rockwood Lodge and Outfitters at https://www.rockwoodbwca.com/. *So what's up with the episode name? Initially we were going to adopt two slogans for the summer of 2020: "Be Smart About Being Safe" and "Plan to Plan Ahead". "Be Smart About Being Safe" is going to stay, but we're replacing "Plan to Plan Ahead" with "Be Like Barb". Cedar and Stone is Duluth's newest guided sauna experience. The sauna is the brainchild of Justin Juntunen, a Duluth local of Finnish descent who had been raised on the culture of sauna his entire life. He wanted to bring this idea of sauna being a social experience, as it is in the Nordic traditions, to his community here in America. So, Justin set out to create a sauna experience unlike any that most living the US today have experienced. The result is an open and inviting guided sauna experience in a beautifully built sauna that has the ability to be moved around wherever it is needed. Martha and Jaye joined Justin during his soft-launch weekend at Chambers Grove Park in Duluth so talk about the social and health benefits of sauna and to, well, enjoy those social and health benefits themselves! Bentleyville Tour of Lights was started as a modest walk-through light display on a farm in Esko, MN in 2001. It was moved to Cloquet, MN and eventually to it's home in Bayfront Park, Duluth where it has been hosted for the past ten years. Martha and Jaye made their way to Bentleyville to watch them flip on the lights promptly at 5 PM on Sunday evening and to walk through the light display. Along the way, they munched on sugar cookies and popcorn, made smores, and attempted to maneuver through the crowds. *Bentleyville Tour of Lights 2019 is a free family-friendly Duluth attraction running from November 23rd-December 28th. Are there haunted places on Lake Superior's North Shore? Of course, there are! Many stories swirl around shadowy figures, disembodies voices, strange smells, and random bursts of cold in an otherwise warm room. There are many well-known haunted places on the North Shore- so many that telling all these stories will likely take many years. Legal gambling in Cook County? A buried treasure? The life of Grand Marais couple in the late-1930s.Newlyweds Curtis and Adair Erickson moved to Grand Marais in 1937 to begin their new life together. Curtis' job was placing, managing, and maintaining slot machines in any gas station, bar, restaurant, resort, and even car dealerships who were willing to share in gambling profits by having machines located within their establishments. The Ericksons set down roots in Grand Marais and built that cabin we now know as Northern Lights Cottage. So how does all of this tie into a buried treasure in a Grand Marais cemetery?
