So why does what we eat matter? A growing body of science in the field of cognitive nutrition shows that the “food-brain connection is actually one of the most powerful drivers of our overall well-being. What we eat matters not only for our physical health but for our cognitive and mental health, affecting our risk of anxiety and depression. The science is clear: we can eat our way to better brain health,” says Arianna Huffington, Founder of the The Huffington Post and CEO of Thrive Global. Our guest, Tracye McQuirter, is a transformative leader in the field of plant-based nutrition and black women's health, and has been helping people go vegan for more than 30 years. She is the founder and CEO of 10 Million Black Vegan Women, a public health intervention to help one million black women go vegan each year for the next ten years.Based in Washington, DC, McQuirter is the author of Ageless Vegan and By Any Greens Necessary, the first vegan diet book for black women, as well as the creator of the first free African American Vegan Starter Guide. The New York Times cited her work as a key factor driving the rise in veganism among African Americans, who are the fastest growing vegan demographic. Tracye has a Master's degree in Public Health Nutrition from New York University. In this episode, host Brad Johnson explores with Tracye some fundamental questions about veganism such as the difference between vegan and plant-based, the benefits of veganism not just for self but for the planet, and the events that sparked her path to veganism.  Tracye elaborates on the grace and compassion necessary to give yourself in the process of eating more vegan understanding that it's not a sprint, it's your personal journey, but that every vegan meal counts.  We also learn about the program Tracye founded to support black women who want to learn more about veganism and move in that direction. Join us at the corner table! * * * Instagram: Corner Table Talk  and Post and Beam Hospitality LinkedIn: Brad Johnson Medium: Corner Table Media E.Mail:  brad@postandbeamhospitality.com For more information on host Brad Johnson or to join our mailing list, please visit: https://postandbeamhospitality.com/ Corner Table™ is a trademark of Post & Beam Hospitality LLC © Post & Beam Hospitality LLCSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We are leaders in so many progresive ways, but we are in a crisis when it comes to our health.

A vegan of 30 years, she co-created the first vegan website by and for African Americans nearly 20 years ago with her sister, historian Marya McQuirter. She directed the country's first federally funded and community-based vegan nutrition program, the Vegetarian Society of DC Eat Smart Program, launched with funding from the US Department of Health and Human Services. The course taught low-income DC residents about the health benefits of plant-based foods, and how to shop for and prepare healthy vegan meals. It was so popular that it became a national model. Tracye, who has a master's degree in public health nutrition and is a popular international speaker, is the bestselling author of By Any Greens Necessary: A Revolutionary Guide for Black Women Who Want to Eat Great, Get Healthy, Lose Weight, and Look Phat and she's been featured in more than 150 media outlets including Fox News, CBS News, The Washington Post and USA Today. In September 2016 Tracye released the first African American Vegan Starter Guide in partnership with Farm Sanctuary. This is a free digital ebook containing 40 pages of information and inspiration from African American vegan experts on how to transition to a plant-based diet, along with vegan recipes from renowned black vegan chefs. As well as consulting with organizations, Tracye offers one-to-one nutritional counseling appointments and online programs in plant-based eating. In this interview Tracye discusses: •    The importance of having multiple streams of income, particularly if you're a service provider •    How zoning in on a highly niche market helps you to grow your business •    How hiring a publicist independently of her publishing house helped her gain national bestseller status for her book within six months of its release •    The business benefits of collaborating with a non-profit on a project •    The need for mentors and a community, especially at the beginning of your business •    And much more Visit Tracye McQuirter's website Check out Tracye's book By Any Greens Necessary: A Revolutionary Guide for Black Women Who Want to Eat Great, Get Healthy, Lose Weight, and Look Phat Download the free African American Vegan Starter Guide Brands mentioned in vegan business news roundup: Temple of Seitan Club Mexicana Pamela Trader Joe's Seamore  RESOURCES: My Online PR Course for Vegan Business Owners & Entrepreneurs: Vegans in the Limelight My book Vegan Ventures: Start and Grow an Ethical Business Follow Vegan Business Media on: Facebook   Twitter  Instagram  Connect with me personally at: Facebook  Twitter  LinkedIn

During the interview, Tracye will discuss the many health benefits of eating a plant based diet, including the prevention and reversal of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and more.  Tracye also admits to not liking vegetables as a child and credits her mom for instilling in her the importance of eating vegetables and the Civil Rights Activist, Dick Gregory for a lecture he gave while Tracye attended Amherst College.  Dick Gregory was scheduled to give a lecture on the “State of Black America” but instead chose to speak about the “Plate of Black America and how unhealthily most of us eat”.  This was an “aha” moment for Tracye which started her on her personal journey to eating healthy and becoming a vegan.  Also during the interview, Tracye will dispel some of the myths that’s associated with eating vegan and provide proof as to why being a vegan is the healthiest way to improve your health, lose weight, prevent and cure chronic diseases.  Tracye will also provide advice on how to gradually start eating vegan and how most of us do eat something vegan and don’t even realize it.  You can find out more about Tracye by visiting her website at “byanygreensnecessary.com”.  You will find a wealth of information on her website along with food recipes and much more.
