SHOW NOTES: On this show….we are peeling back the layers to build more authentic connections amid this tech-driven world. Got a lot of “friends” but still feel lonely? Receiving a lot of “likes” and “loves” but still feeling unheard? Take a minute and count your authentic connections. You know the ones who have your back and you have theirs. You call them and they show up to celebrate or get you back on your feet. They are priceless and they didn't happen by accident. In today's tech-heavy world, it's easy to feel like we're buried under layers of screens and gadgets, which can make real, authentic connections seem out of reach. But here's the good news: peeling back those layers isn't as hard as it sounds! Let's dive into how to cut through the digital noise and build genuine relationships that enrich our lives. Having a tight inner circle is critical and yes, exclusive. I have friends who have been with me through thick and thin. They have loved me even through the unlovable stages of my life. And let me tell you, there were many. They are gold and unshakable. I hope I'm half the friend to them as they are to me. Woodrow Wilson said, “Friendship is the only cement that will ever hold the world together." If that's true, shouldn't we take it super seriously? That means effort, being strategic, and adopting a give/get approach. At Your Life Your Voice I found a breakdown of the different circles of friendship. At TedEd's YouTube channel, I found some good information on How friendship affects your brain - Shannon Odell
This week, friends Shannon Odell and Alyssa Limperis (Wake Up Long Island) share the actual screen while they duke it out in trivia for charity! Shannon and Alyssa are both playing for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. While we often talk about puberty's effect on the body, what gets overlooked are the fascinating changes that happen in the brain. Puberty, in fact, begins in the brain, and lasts as long as five years. And during this extended process, the brain undergoes its own transformation, thanks to estrogen and testosterone. Shannon Odell details what we know -- and still don't know -- about puberty. This TED-Ed lesson was directed by Biljana Labović, narrated by Alexandra Panzer and Adrian Dannatt, with music by Weston Fonger.
Love is often described as heartwarming, heart-wrenching, or even heartbreaking— and your brain is responsible for all these feelings. The journey from first spark to the last tear is guided by a symphony of neurochemicals and brain systems. Shannon Odell explores what happens in your brain when you fall in love, how it responds to a relationship, and how it reacts to a breakup. [Directed by Biljana Labović, narrated by Alexandra Panzer, music by Samuel Bellingham].

Anita comes from a tea-drinking family, but she's happiest when she's holding a mug of coffee the size of her face. For years, she's been reading headlines about why coffee is "good" for you, but she's not sure where myth ends and fact begins. So, she turns to the experts: Dr. Rao (her dad) is back to explain why coffee makes you poop, and how it affects your gut. A neuroscientist tells her about what her brain is doing once coffee hits her system. And two folks with deep ties to java talk about coffee culture, from bean to brew. Meet the guests: Dr. Satish Rao, gastroenterologist and professor of medicine at Augusta University. And Anita's dad! Never has a guest on Sweatpants understood the concept of a low-key climate podcast faster than Dr. Shannon Odell (Drunk Science, Fun City, Your Brain On Blank). Despite having a PhD in Neuroscience, Shannon is also a working comedian in New York City, and you better believe they get into it on the podcast. Shannon and Rollie try to get into brains of climate deniers as well as people suffering from climate grief, but they do it in a really low-key way so they don't violate the sacred tenet of the podcast.
