The hill of Doves — in isiZulu amaJuba means the place of many doves or pigeons. It became a place of violence and blood, and yet the catastrophic defeat of the British at Majuba was indeed to lead to peace. The doves would fly again albeit fleetingly. As you heard last episode, British commander General George Colley had been one of the casualties of the battle — Sir Evelyn Wood was now in charge of the empire's army in the Transvaal. Or to be more accurate, in Natal attempting to enter the Transvaal. Colley was buried at Mount Prospect — the British base below Laings Nek in sight of Majuba — letters of condolence were sent to his wife Lady Colley by the Town councils of Pietermaritzburg and Durban .. and also by the Transvaal Boer Leaders. Colley had asked that his body should be allowed to remain where he fell on the battlefield, and so it was. His wife would have to travel to the Transvaal border to see where he lay. A state of war existed, the Boers continued to besiege all British garrisons in the Transvaal in early 1881. More about that in a moment. The Summer rains were falling, drenching the landscape like the blood of Majuba, and both sides sought peace. Boer emissaries had met with the Swazi king, but he was loathe to join the attack on the empires forces. On the 2nd March 1881 Evelyn Wood relayed a letter to the Boer leadership, the triumpherate as they were known from his base at Newcastle. “to President Brand, Bloemfontein, P Joubert (he means Commandant Piet Joubert, Boer commander in the Transvaal) requests me to send you the following telegram…” The British commander as postman — relaying one Boer message to another. Brand's message back was reconciliatory in tone. “…We are willing to accept every offer made by your Honour …” and by your honour Joubert meant Wood … “that peace may be, as far as it is not in direct opposition to our liberty…” That was the minimum demand — the Boers demanded their liberty. ON the 5th, Wood and his staff met Piet Joubert and Boer leaders half way between Mount Prospect and Laing's Nek in a hastily erected tent. The British hardliners were horrified - how could Wood, an English General who had now built up a force of 10 000 soldiers in Natal concede to an interview with the leaders of the enemy for the sake of gaining time to negotiate peace? Some said it was too absurd to be credited, others in the English camp were astonished. But he was also a general who represented an army that had been beaten four times in an open fight — Bronkhorspruit, Laings Nek, Schoonspruit, Majuba. Why continue the war? It was time to resolve things. While the English nationalists bayed for Boer blood, were calling for this upstart Transvaal Republic to be crushed as a warning to other rebels across the empire, cooler heads prevailed. Joining Wood were Major Frazer, Captain Maude and Mr Cropper the translator. On the Boer side, Piet Joubert, DC Uys, CJ Joubert and CHJ Fouchees, with AJ Foster interpreting. A tight group. The fewer involved the better. Wood opened with meeting with an explanation — he was there to call for an armistice so that Kruger and the Volksraad could reply to General Colley's communication of the 21st February re: peace. The entire meeting was to last an astonishing 90 minutes. Joubert presented the Transvaal position most concisely, Complete amnesty for all leaders, freedom of the Transvaal from British government although they'd accept suzerainty, no interference in Transvaal's internal affairs — they meant on matters pertaining to race and land. It was the word suzerainty that was the problem child here. To the British government, particularly officials in London, suzerainty implied that the restored Boer republic in the Transvaal would enjoy internal self-government but would remain subordinate to the British Crown in matters such as foreign relations as well as overall imperial authority. The Boer negotiators understood the term far more loosely.

It is not a stretch to say that the defeat by the British at Majuba was also the political birth of the Afrikaner people. While the Great Trek provided the origin story, Majuba provided the validation—the sense that their culture was not only distinct but divinely protected and militarily capable of standing against the greatest empire of the age. Before the main event, there was the small matter of Schuinshoogte. It was February 1881, and General Sir George Pomeroy Colley was in a bind. Boer patrols under Commander J. D. Weilbach were constantly harassing his communications with Newcastle. Colley was determined to act. The recent defeat at Laing's Nek had energized the Boers, and he needed to clear the road between Newcastle and Mount Prospect. His reinforcements were finally on the way, but first, he had to keep those vital British supply lines open. Deputy President Paul Kruger sent a letter to George Pomeroy Colley on the 12th February 1881, requesting negotiations. “We desire to seek no conflict with the Imperial Government but cannot do otherwise than give the last drop of blood for our lawful right, for which also each Englishmen would give his blood..” Colley wrote back on the 21st February. “Sir I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter…” “…I must inform you that as soon as the Boers, now in arms against her Majesty's authority, discontinue their armed resistance, Her Majesty's Government is prepared to appoint a Commission…” Both sides had agreed that some kind of Royal Commission would be responsible for investigating the causes of this war. That placated the Boer Triumpherate leadership. Kruger sent another letter on the 28th February 1881, “to this excellency, Sir G Pomeroy Colley… I have the satisfaction … to inform you that we are very thankful for the declaration…” He meant of a commission — Kruger and the Boers were sure they would be exonerated by a proper investigation “It appears to us…” he continued “…that now for the first time since the unhappy day of the annexation, an opportunity occurs of coming to a friendly settlement…” Kruger was calling for a speedy resolution. Colley never read the letter. He was already dead. His end was to come at Majuba on the 27th February. On Saturday night, February 26th, General Colley left his camp again on a secret expedition. With him was a compact force of 405 men, two companies of the 58th Regiment, two of the 3-60th, two of the 92nd highlands, the Naval Brigade, some Hussars, the cavalry. Two other companies of the 3-60th were to leave a little later with reserve ammunition and form a defensive position behind Colley's advancing expedition. The troops had no idea where they were going, only after the march began did word spread they were on their way to a high hill called Majuba to the left of the British camp. From their they would have a commanding view of the Boer camps, and their line of defences on the escarpment flats beyond Laing's Nek. The 3-60th were on the left, facing a difficult pass. They all stopped at a ridge below this imposing mountain, the horses, the Hussars, and the guns were sent back to the camp, there was no way they'd make it up this steep side. That alone should have been a warning to Colley. He knew he was outnumbered by the Boers, but decided to go ahead and climb to the summit of Majuba anyway despite leaving his vital artillery behind. It was a very difficult climb, and they reached the top just before daybreak on the 27th February. Sunday morning. Six hours of toil, but they'd made it, despite the dangerous climb. To his credit, General Colley was the second man to reach the top, behind his two IC Major Fraser. As the sun rose, subaltern's pitched a tent for Colley, the soldiers ate their breakfast, while some began to dig wells for water. Crucially, they were not digging in for battle, presuming that no-one would be able to reach their position — they held the high ground after all.

Weather, some say, is fickle. Of course nature is just nature but when you're on high ground, the mountains, and the weather moves in, the temperature drops in minutes and wind shifts. It is a dangerous place and that's during mid-summer. Perhaps summer is the most dangerous time to be caught in a mountain storm, particularly in South Africa because there's more moisture and freezing sleet and snow sweeps over the summit, overwhelming hikers in shorts and T-shirts. During January and February 1881, the weather along the Natal escarpment near Volksrust and Majuba was characterized by high rainfall, frequent thunderstorms, thick mist, and cold nights. This period was at the height of the summer rainy season, creating wet, muddy conditions that significantly impacted military operations during the First Boer War. The weather at times was bitter, just like the Boer sentiment. Laing's Nek gravesite was desecrated in 1969 when Afrikaner Nationalists under cover of dark, blew up a large Cross that had been erected over the graves of Royal Navy sailors who'd perished during the Battle of Laing's Nek in February 1881. Such was the depth of historical bitterness. Memories run deep. The last known Boer of the First Anglo-Boer war, Jacob "Jaap" Coetzer died in the same year as the exploding cross — 1969 - showing just how long veterans of war can live amongst a population that has no clue about their past. A vet of the first Anglo-Boer War had lived to hear Beatles music. Coetzer was 15 year's old when he joined Commandant Piet Joubert's commandos in the area of Laings Nek, and was a survivor of the next major clash, Majuba. Not that Jaap Coetzer was in any way linked to the desecration. Laing's Nek lies on the N11, a quick 20 minute drive through this pass and you ascend from the rolling hills of KZN into the highground of Mpumalanga — or the Transvaal as it was in 1881. In January 1881, the British force under Major General Sir George Pomeroy Colley moved off from Newcastle after his ultimatum to the Boers had been ignored. Despite his intelligence and administrative competence, his battlefield record would reveal a critical weakness: a tendency to apply textbook European tactics in environments where they were increasingly obsolete. The Boers, by contrast, were armed with modern Westley Richards breech-loading rifles and other similar breech-loading firearms, which allowed for faster and more accurate fire than the older muzzle-loading weapons that had shaped earlier British tactics. Many Boers were also skilled marksmen, accustomed to hunting and irregular warfare, and they fought from concealed positions—rocks, ridges, and scrub—rather than in formal lines. This combination of mobility, cover, and firepower was going to be devastating. Colley led 1216 officers and men including five companies of the 58th Regiment, 5 companies of the 3rd Battalion of the 60th Rifles, 150 cavalrymen, a party of Royal Navy sailors with two 7 pound guns, and a mounted unit of Royal Artillery with four 9 pound guns. Major General Colley was determined to revenge the previous month's debacle at Bronkhorstpruit. The Boers setup four main laagers on the escarpment north east of Majuba. Their main camp was based at a point south of the Standerton Road, about 10 kilometers from Wakkerstroom. From here, flanking the two roads which approached from Newcastle, their patrols could ride out to watch the Buffalo River fords, as well as Laing's Nek. Colley had moved off from Newcastle on the 24th January, after two days of heavy rain held up his wagons. On the 25th they struggled across the Imbazane River, and on the 26th, crossed the Ingogo River. British patrols saw Boers moving on the pass, and on the evening of the 27th, noted that Laings Nek was occupied in force. More heavy rain fell that day, and a thick mist drifted across the landscape. On the morning of the 28th, Colley led his force out of the laager.

Many Boers were also skilled marksmen, accustomed to hunting and irregular warfare, and they fought from concealed positions—rocks, ridges, and scrub—rather than in formal lines. This combination of mobility, cover, and firepower was going to be devastating. Colley led 1216 officers and men including five companies of the 58th Regiment, 5 companies of the 3rd Battalion of the 60th Rifles, 150 cavalrymen, a party of Royal Navy sailors with two 7 pound guns, and a mounted unit of Royal Artillery with four 9 pound guns. Major General Colley was determined to revenge the previous month's debacle at Bronkhorstpruit. The Boers setup four main laagers on the escarpment north east of Majuba. Their main camp was based at a point south of the Standerton Road, about 10 kilometers from Wakkerstroom. From here, flanking the two roads which approached from Newcastle, their patrols could ride out to watch the Buffalo River fords, as well as Laing's Nek. Colley had moved off from Newcastle on the 24th January, after two days of heavy rain held up his wagons. On the 25th they struggled across the Imbazane River, and on the 26th, crossed the Ingogo River. British patrols saw Boers moving on the pass, and on the evening of the 27th, noted that Laings Nek was occupied in force. More heavy rain fell that day, and a thick mist drifted across the landscape. On the morning of the 28th, Colley led his force out of the laager.

Pēc vairāk nekā 50 Latvijas Nacionālā mākslas muzejā (LNMM) darbā pavadītiem gadiem drīzumā direktora amatu atstās Māra Lāce. Par “Lāces laiku” muzejā, par šaubām, uzticēšanos un mākslu kā aktīvas sabiedrības veidotāju saruna raidījumā Kultūras rondo. Nekļūdīgi atpazīstama ar savu Vidberga frizūru, stalto stāju un labi nostādīto balsi, kas vairāk nekā 50 gadus skanējusi Latvijas Nacionālajā mākslas muzejā. Ilggadējā muzeja direktore Māra Lāce drīzumā noslēgs savas darba gaitas, tāpēc raidījumā runājam gan par to, kā tas viss savulaik sākās, gan par lielākajiem izaicinājumiem un prieka brīžiem Mākslas muzeja vadībā. „Es neesmu pārāk emocionāla, esmu ļoti racionāls cilvēks,” Māra Lāce saka sarunā. Runājam par to, kāpēc sabiedrībai vajadzīga laikmetīgās mākslas urdošā provokācija un vai boikots ir pareizā atbilde uz Krievijas dalību Venēcijas biennālē. Māra Lāce atļaujas arī pa kādai emocionālākai notij, kad runā par saviem kolēģiem un to, kāpēc pat grūtākajos muzeja brīžos nav gribējusi rakstīt atlūgumu. -- Kādreizējā Valsts Mākslas muzejā Māra Lāce sāka strādāt 1973.gadā 19 gadu vecumā. Viss gan esot sācies pavisam prozaiski: kā visiem neklātienes studentiem, arī viņai kā topošajai mākslas vēsturniecei vienkārši vajadzēja izziņu par nodarbinātību. Bet uzreiz nesākās Māras Lāces muzeja karjera, jo Mākslas muzejā viņu toreiz nepieņēma. Gadu viņa nostrādāja Latvijas Nacionālajā bibliotēkā, un tikai gadu vēlāk atnāca uzaicinājums, ka Valsts Mākslas muzejā atbrīvojusies gida vieta. Par viņas direktores gadiem Latvijas Nacionālā mākslas muzejā saka – „Lāces laiks”. Muzeja vadībā Māra Lāce ir bijusi vairākas desmitgades un pārdzīvojusi daudz politiķu un ierēdņu, kuri ar jaunu sparu cenšas ieviest jau sen izmēģinātas pārmaiņas un kultūru uztver kā spožu piespraudi pie atloka, ko piespraust, kad jāpadižojas viesiem, bet rāmi var aizmirst pārējā laikā. Līdz ar direktores amata atstāšanu Māras Lāces darbs Latvijas Nacionālajā mākslas muzejā tomēr uzreiz nebeigsies: viņa jau brīvprātīgā kārtā turpinās kuratores darbu pie plašas zīmējumu izstādes, kas vasarā vērs durvis Mākslas muzeja Lielajā izstāžu zālē.

Jézus pedig, aki tudott mindent, ami várt rá, eléjük ment, és megkérdezte tőlük: ,,Kit kerestek?'' Azt felelték neki: ,,A Názáreti Jézust.'' Ő azt mondta nekik: ,,Én vagyok.'' Ott állt velük Júdás is, aki elárulta őt. Amikor azt mondta nekik: ,,Én vagyok'', meghátráltak és a földre estek. Erre ismét megkérdezte őket: ,,Kit kerestek?'' Azok pedig azt mondták: ,,A Názáreti Jézust.'' Jézus megismételte: ,,Mondtam nektek: Én vagyok! Ha tehát engem kerestek, hagyjátok ezeket elmenni!'' Be kellett teljesednie az igének, amelyet mondott: ,,Akiket nekem adtál, azok közül senkit sem vesztettem el.'' Mivel Simon Péternek volt egy kardja, kirántotta azt, lesújtott a főpap szolgájára, és levágta a jobb fülét. A szolga neve Malkusz volt. Jézus erre azt mondta Péternek: ,,Tedd a hüvelyébe kardodat! Ne igyam ki a poharat, amelyet az Atya nekem adott?'' Ekkor a csapat, a parancsnok és a zsidók poroszlói elfogták Jézust, és megkötözték őt. Először Annáshoz vitték, ő ugyanis apósa volt Kaifásnak, aki főpap volt abban az esztendőben. Kaifás volt az, aki azt a tanácsot adta a zsidóknak: ,,Jobb, ha egy ember hal meg a népért''. Simon Péter és egy másik tanítvány követte Jézust. Ez a tanítvány ismerőse volt a főpapnak, és bement Jézussal a főpap udvarába, Péter pedig az ajtón kívül állt. Kiment tehát az a másik tanítvány, aki ismerőse volt a főpapnak, szólt az ajtónálló szolgálónak, és bevezette Pétert. Akkor az ajtónálló szolgáló azt mondta Péternek: ,,Nem vagy te is ennek az embernek a tanítványai közül való?'' Ő azt felelte: ,,Nem vagyok!'' Ott álltak a szolgák és poroszlók, akik tüzet raktak, mert hideg volt, és melegedtek. Péter is ott állt velük, és melegedett. A főpap eközben tanítványairól és tanításáról kérdezte Jézust. Jézus azt felelte neki: ,,Én nyíltan beszéltem a világnak, mindig a zsinagógában tanítottam és a templomban, ahova a zsidók mindnyájan összegyűlnek, és titokban semmit sem mondtam. Miért kérdezel engem? Kérdezd azokat, akik hallották, mit beszéltem nekik. Íme, ők tudják, mit mondtam.'' Amikor ezeket mondta, az ott álló poroszlók egyike arculütötte Jézust, és így szólt: ,,Így felelsz a főpapnak?'' Jézus azt felelte neki: ,,Ha rosszul szóltam, bizonyítsd be a rosszat, ha pedig jól, miért ütsz engem?'' Akkor Annás elküldte őt megkötözve Kaifás főpaphoz. Simon Péter pedig ott állt és melegedett. Valaki azt mondta neki: ,,Ugye te is az ő tanítványai közül való vagy?'' Ő azonban letagadta: ,,Nem vagyok!'' A főpap egyik szolgája, rokona annak, akinek Péter levágta a fülét, így szólt: ,,Nem téged láttalak vele a kertben?'' Péter pedig ismét tagadta, és nyomban megszólalt a kakas. Jézust Kaifástól a helytartóságra vezették. Kora reggel volt. Ők nem mentek be a helytartóságra, hogy tisztátalanná ne váljanak, és megehessék a húsvéti bárányt. Ezért Pilátus ment ki hozzájuk, és megkérdezte: ,,Miféle vádat hoztok fel ez ellen az ember ellen?'' Azt felelték neki: ,,Ha nem volna gonosztevő, nem adtuk volna őt a kezedbe.'' Erre Pilátus azt mondta nekik: ,,Vegyétek át ti őt, és ítéljétek el a törvényetek szerint.'' A zsidók azt felelték neki: ,,Nekünk senkit sem szabad megölnünk.'' Ez azért történt, hogy beteljesedjék Jézus szava, amelyet mondott, jelezve, hogy milyen halállal fog meghalni. Ismét bement tehát Pilátus a helytartóságra, hivatta Jézust, és megkérdezte őt: ,,Te vagy-e a zsidók királya?'' Jézus azt felelte: ,,Magadtól mondod ezt, vagy mások mondták neked rólam?'' Pilátus ezt válaszolta: ,,Hát zsidó vagyok én? Saját nemzeted és a főpapok adtak téged a kezembe. Mit tettél?'' Jézus azt felelte: ,,Az én országom nem ebből a világból való. Ha az én országom ebből a világból volna, szolgáim harcra kelnének, hogy a zsidók kezébe ne kerüljek. De az én országom nem innen való.'' Pilátus erre megkérdezte: ,,Tehát király vagy te?'' Jézus azt felelte: ,,Te mondod, hogy király vagyok. Arra születtem és azért jöttem a világba, hogy tanúságot tegyek az igazságról. Mindaz, aki az igazságból való, hallgat a szavamra.'' Pilátus erre így szólt: ,,Mi az igazság?'' Majd e szavak után ismét kiment a zsidókhoz, és azt mondta nekik: ,,Én semmi vétket sem találok őbenne. Szokás pedig nálatok, hogy húsvétkor szabadon bocsássak nektek valakit. Akarjátok-e, hogy szabadon bocsássam nektek a zsidók királyát?'' Erre ismét így kiáltoztak: ,,Ne ezt, hanem Barabást!'' Barabás pedig rabló volt. Akkor Pilátus elfogatta Jézust és megostoroztatta. A katonák pedig koronát fontak tövisből, a fejére tették, és bíborszínű köpenyt adtak rá. Aztán eléje járultak, és azt mondogatták: ,,Üdvözlégy, zsidók királya!'' És arculverték őt. Pilátus újra kiment, és azt mondta nekik: ,,Íme, kihozom őt nektek, hogy megtudjátok, hogy semmi vétket sem találok benne.'' Akkor kijött Jézus, töviskoronával, bíborköpenyben. Ő pedig azt mondta nekik: ,,Íme, az ember!'' Amikor a főpapok és poroszlók meglátták, kiáltozni kezdtek: ,,Feszítsd meg, feszítsd meg!,, Pilátus így szólt: ,,Vegyétek át ti őt, és feszítsétek keresztre, mert én nem találok vétket benne.'' De a zsidók így szóltak: ,,Nekünk törvényünk van, és a törvény szerint meg kell halnia, mert Isten Fiává tette magát!'' Amikor Pilátus meghallotta ezeket a szavakat, még jobban megijedt. Újra bement a helytartóságra, és megkérdezte Jézustól: ,,Honnan való vagy te?'' Jézus azonban nem adott neki feleletet. Ezért Pilátus azt mondta neki: ,,Nekem nem válaszolsz? Nem tudod, hogy hatalmam van arra, hogy szabadon bocsássalak, és arra, hogy megfeszítselek?'' Jézus azt felelte: ,,Semmi hatalmad sem volna felettem, ha onnan felülről nem adatott volna neked. Ezért annak, aki engem kezedbe adott, nagyobb a bűne.'' Ettől fogva Pilátus azon volt, hogy elbocsássa őt. De a zsidók így kiáltoztak: ,,Ha ezt elbocsátod, nem vagy a császár barátja! Mindaz, aki királlyá teszi magát, ellenszegül a császárnak.'' Amikor Pilátus meghallotta ezeket a szavakat, kihozatta Jézust, és a bírói székbe ült azon a helyen, amelyet kövezett udvarnak neveznek, héberül meg Gabbatának. A húsvét készületnapja volt akkor, körülbelül hat óra. Így szólt a zsidókhoz: ,,Íme, a ti királyotok!'' De azok így kiáltoztak: ,,El vele, el vele, feszítsd meg őt!'' Pilátus megkérdezte tőlük: ,,A királyotokat feszítsem meg?'' A főpapok azt felelték: ,,Nincs királyunk, csak császárunk!'' Akkor aztán kezükbe adta őt, hogy feszítsék meg. Azok átvették Jézust. Ő pedig keresztjét hordozva kiment az úgynevezett Koponyahelyre, amelyet héberül Golgotának neveznek. Ott keresztre feszítették őt, és vele másik kettőt kétfelől, Jézust pedig középen. Pilátus egy feliratot is készíttetett, és a kereszt fölé helyeztette. Ez volt ráírva: ,,A Názáreti Jézus, a zsidók királya.'' Ezt a feliratot tehát sokan olvasták a zsidók közül, mert közel volt a városhoz az a hely, ahol megfeszítették Jézust. Héberül, görögül és latinul volt írva. A zsidók főpapjai ezért arra kérték Pilátust: ,,Ne azt írd: A zsidók királya, hanem: Ez azt mondta: ,,A zsidók királya vagyok''!'' Pilátus azt felelte: ,,Amit írtam, azt megírtam!'' A katonák pedig, miután megfeszítették Jézust, fogták a ruháit, elosztották négy felé, minden katonának egy részt, azután fogták a köntöst is. A köntös varratlan volt, felülről egy darabban szőve. Ezért azt mondták egymásnak: ,,Ezt ne vágjuk szét, inkább vessünk rá sorsot, kié legyen!'' Ez azért történt, hogy beteljesedjék az Írás, amely így szól: ,,Elosztották maguk között ruháimat, és köntösömre sorsot vetettek'' [Zsolt 22,19]. A katonák tehát ezt tették. Jézus keresztje mellett ott állt anyja, anyjának nővére, Mária, Kleofás felesége és Mária Magdolna. Amikor Jézus meglátta anyját és az ott álló tanítványt, akit szeretett, így szólt anyjához: ,,Asszony, íme, a te fiad!'' Azután azt mondta a tanítványnak: ,,Íme, a te anyád!'' És attól az órától magához vette őt a tanítvány. Ezután Jézus, aki tudta, hogy már minden bevégeztetett, hogy beteljesedjék az Írás, így szólt: ,,Szomjazom!'' Volt ott egy ecettel teli edény. Ezért ecettel telt szivacsot tűztek egy izsópra, és a szájához nyújtották. Amikor Jézus az ecetet megízlelte, azt mondta: ,,Beteljesedett!'' És fejét lehajtva kilehelte lelkét. A zsidók pedig, mivel készületnap volt, kérték Pilátust, hogy törjék meg lábszárcsontjaikat, és vegyék le őket, hogy a testek ne maradjanak ott a kereszten szombatra, mert az a szombat nagy nap volt. Odamentek tehát a katonák, és eltörték a lábszárát először az egyik vele együtt keresztrefeszítettnek, aztán a másiknak. Amikor azonban Jézushoz értek, mivel látták, hogy ő már meghalt, nem törték meg a lábszárát, hanem az egyik katona lándzsával megnyitotta oldalát, amelyből azonnal vér és víz jött ki. Aki ezt látta, tanúságot tett róla, és igaz az ő tanúsága. Ő tudja, hogy igazat mond, hogy ti is higgyetek. Mert ezek azért történtek, hogy beteljesedjék az Írás: ,,Csontját ne törjék össze'' [Kiv 12,46; Zsolt 34,21]. Egy másik Írás pedig azt mondja: ,,Látni fogják azt, akit keresztülszúrtak'' [Zak 12,10]. Ezek után pedig az arimateai József, aki Jézus tanítványa volt, de a zsidóktól való félelmében csak titokban, megkérte Pilátust, hogy levehesse Jézus testét. Pilátus megengedte. Elment tehát és levette a testet. Eljött Nikodémus is, aki először éjszaka ment hozzá, s mirha- és áloé-keveréket hozott, körülbelül száz fontot. Fogták tehát Jézus testét, és a fűszerekkel együtt gyolcsruhákba göngyölték, ahogy a zsidóknál temetni szokás. Azon a helyen, ahol felfeszítették őt, volt egy kert, és a kertben egy új sírbolt, amelyben még senki sem feküdt. "Mana demences hronika" – tā nav padomu grāmata par mentālo veselību, bet gan Roalda Dobrovenska piezīmes par demenci, par sev, par savu sievu Veltu Kaltiņu, par vecumu un par Staļinu… Savukārt "Tai dievišķā krogā" ir Veltas Kaltiņas (1931–2025) pēdējais dzejas krājums ar poētisku viedumu un pārlaicīgu pasaules redzējumu. Kultūras rondo veltīts Latvijas literātu pārim Veltai Kaltiņai un Roaldam Dobrovenskim. Satikušies Augtākajos literārajos kursos Maskavā kopš 1975. gada viņi ir Latvijā. Ja par "lielo dzejnieku pāri" mēs saucam Raini un Aspaziju, tad Roalds un Velta ir mūsdienu literātu pāris. Un tieši viņš ir tas, kurš pēta materiālus Raiņa muzeja krājumā un saraksta grāmatu "Rainis un viņa brāļi".  Roalds Dobrovenskis savā "Facebook" profilā raksta: "Kādreiz es mēģināju publicēt te laikabiedru portretus, bet kļūdīgi nosaucu vienu no tiem. Nu, tātad apdedzinājos un pārtraucu. Nu tagad otrais mēģinājums. Daļa no fotogrāfijām pirms gadiem bija izstādītas dažādās vietās. Man patīk šīs sejas. Katra no tām. Ja kam būs iebildumi sakarā ar to vai citu bildi, noņemšu uzreiz. Gadījās, ka klikšķis piederēja Veltai Kaltiņai. Un tas viss uzņemts viņas klātbūtnē. Nekādas kārtības es neizdomāju. Ņemšu, kā gadās." Un neticēsiet, 2025. gada janvārī viņam ir pilni 88 gadi. Viņa sievai, latviešu dzejniecei Veltai Kaltiņai - 93. Viņa ir atgriezusies no slimnīcas pēc insulta. Un Roalds Dobrovenskis tobrīd raksta grāmatu "Manas demences hronika", kura piedzīvoja atvēršanu 2026. gada 6. martā Pļaviņu sociālās aprūpes centrā. Un grūti noticēt, ka viņam ir tik daudz gadu, ka bijušas smagas veselības problēmas un mūžībā devusies viņa mīļotā sieva dzejniece Velta Kaltiņa. Viņa vēl paspējusi sakārtot savu pēdējo dzejas krājumu "Tai dievišķā krogā". Un acis viņam tik siltas un prāts ass, mugurā smokings, kurš savulaik sarūpēts uz Vairas Vīķes-Freibergas inaugurācijas balli Rundāles pilī, un pie atloka neuzkrītoša Triju Zvaigžņu ordeņa zīme.  Lai arī todien tika atvērtas trīs grāmatas – Veltas Kaltiņas dzeja "Šai dievišķā krogā", Roalda Dobrovenska "Manas demences hronika" oriģinālā – krievu un tulkojumā – latviešu valodā, šo raidījumu sākam ar Roalda stāstu par smokingu, kas iezīmē mūsu visu vēsturi, ar neesošajiem smokingiem un grūtajiem juku laikiem.

Turpinām sarunu par drošību internetā. Pērn interneta un telefona krāpnieku ķēriens Latvijā vien krietni pārsniedza 20 miljonus eiro. Diemžēl arī 2026. gads noziedzniekiem ir sācies labi. Par šobrīd izplatītākajām krāpšanas metodēm un drošības uzlabojumiem elektroniskā paraksta jomā runājam raidījumā Kā labāk dzīvot. Skaidro kiberincidentu novēršanas institūcijas "CERT.LV" kiberdrošības eksperts Gints Mālkalnietis, programmatūras inženieris Elviss Strazdiņš un Latvijas Radio un televīzijas centra pārstāve Vineta Sprugaine. Vineta Sprugaine stāsta, ka jau kopš pagājušā gada novembra LVRTC ir ieviesis jaunu drošības funkciju eParaksts mobile lietotājiem. Tagad, apliecinot e-Identitāti ar eParaksts mobile, pārlūkprogrammā jāievada unikāls trīsciparu kods, kas attēlojas eParaksts mobile lietotnē. Viņa neslēpj, ka lietotāji iebilst, bet tas ir svarīgi drošībai, jo ir jau bijuši gadījumi, kad arī šo drošības kodu cilvēki nodod krāpniekiem.   "Vienmēr neizdosies pasargāt, jo vājākais ķēdes posms ir pats cilvēks. Nekādas tehnoloģijas nepasargās, ja cilvēks svešiniekam, kurš zvana un uzdodas par kaut ko, atdod savas digitālās pases, identitāti un parakstu," uzskata Vineta Sprugaine. Viņa arī norāda, ka no 2026. gada februāra, lai izmantot e-parasts mobile, Android telefoniem būs nepieciešama 10. versija, bet iOS - 16. versija. Elviss Strazdiņš atklāj, ka Tartu universitātes veiktā pētījumā secināts, ka arī bankas Baltijas valstīs savā ziņā nevārīgi izturas  pret drošību, jo kā prioritāti izvirza ērtības. Konkrēti viņš norāda, ka bankās būtu nepieciešams ieviest Smart ID trīs skaitļu funkcionalitāti.  Vēl viņš aicina nelietot vienu un to pašu PIN kodu telefonam un Smart ID, kā arī neizmantot ekrānā uznirstošos Smart ID paziņojumus. Gints Mālkalnietis atgādina, ka cilvēku slinkums darbojas krāpnieku labā.  Smart ID trīs skaitļu funkcionalitāti ir izveidojis jau pirms vairākiem gadiem, bet cilvēki izvēlas to nelietot.  "Ir daudz tehnoloģiski labu mehānismu, kurus nelieto, jo ir slinkums, jo lietotāju pieredze nav tāda. Bankas nevēlas, lai klientiem būtu kāds apgrūtinājums. Es viņus saprotu, bet no drošības viedokļa riski ir gana lieli un cilvēki īsti nesaprot, ar ko viņi riskē dažu lieku klikšķu dēļ," papildina Gints Mālkalnietis.

Aktualitātes analizē Ģeopolitikas pētījumu centra direktors, Rīgas Stradiņa universitātes asociētais profesors Māris Andžāns un Ģeopolitikas pētījumu centra vecākais pētnieks Jānis Kažociņš. Aiz valsts sekretāra nogludinātajām frāzēm par „suverēnu, neatkarīgu un pārtikušu” Ukrainu kā procesa mērķi nav nojaušamas sarunu detaļas, tai skaitā tas, kādas sviras un ar cik nopietnu spiedienu amerikāņu puse darbinājusi pret saviem sarunu partneriem. Tikām Ukrainas prezidents Volodimirs Zelenskis 1. decembrī viesojās Parīzē, kur tikās ar vienu no konsekventākajiem viņa valsts atbalstītājiem, Francijas prezidentu Emanuelu Makronu. Sarunu laikā abi sazvanījušies arī ar Lielbritānijas, Vācijas, Polijas, Itālijas, Norvēģijas, Somijas, Dānijas un Nīderlandes līderiem, arī Eiropadomes prezidentu Antoniu Koštu, Eiropas Komisijas vadītāju Urzulu fon der Leienu un NATO ģenerālsekretāru Marku Riti. Jautājumu par Krievijas iesaldētajiem aktīviem, drošības garantijām Ukrainai, tās pievienošanos Eiropas Savienībai un Eiropas sankcijām pret Krieviju galīgi var izlemt „tikai tad, ja pie sarunu galda ir visas Eiropas valstis,” pēc tikšanās deklarēja Makrons. Kā sava veida atbilde šai tēzei no Eiropas pretējās puses tai izskanēja Krievijas diktatora Putina teiktais, sagaidot Stīvu Vitkofu un Džaredu Kušneru Maskavā, kurp viņi devās pēc tikšanās Floridā. Eiropa, kā izteicās Putins, esot tā, kas kurinot karu un traucējot amerikāņu miera centieniem. Krievijai neesot nolūka karot ar Eiropu, taču, ja nu eiropieši sākšot karu, tad Krievija esot gatava kaut tūlīt. Putina un ASV pārstāvju 2. decembra tikšanās sakarā mediji citē Krievijas vadoņa ārpolitikas padomnieku Juriju Ušakovu, kurš līdz ar īpašo sūtni Kirilu Dmitrijevu tajā asistēja Kremļa saimniekam. Tikšanās, kā teicis Ušakovs, esot bijusi „ārkārtīgi noderīga, konstruktīva un informatīva”, kādam risinājumam tuvāk gan neesot tikts. Lielu tās daļu aizņēmušas, kā izteicās Kremļa pārstāvis, „teritoriālās problēmas”, ar ko, acīmredzot, jāsaprot Kremļa agresora apetīte pievākt jau okupētās un vēl neieņemtās Ukrainas zemes. „Vēl daudz darba jāpadara,” paziņojis Ušakovs. Apžēlojiet nevaļīgo! „It kā valstij jau tā nenāktos gana smagi cīnīties ar tiesisko un konstitucionālo krīzi, svētdien premjerministrs Benjamins Netanjahu ieveda Izraēlu jaunā mīnu laukā,” tā izdevums „Israel Times” raksturo valdības vadītāja soli, 30. novembrī iesniedzot Izraēlas prezidentam Īzakam Hercogam lūgumu pirms tiesas apžēlot viņu par kriminālapsūdzībām trīs lietās, par kurām viņš tiek tiesāts kopš 2020. gada. Apsūdzības saturs ir  krāpšana un uzticības ļaunprātīga izmantošana trīs atsevišķās korupcijas lietās, kā arī kukuļa pieņemšana pozitīva mediju atspoguļojuma veidā vienā no šīm lietām. Lūgums pēc formas, faktiski premjera vēstule valsts galvam un tai sekojošā publiskotā videouzruna pilsoņiem ir vismaz uzstājīga prasība. Premjerministrs neko nesaka par to, vai uzskata sevi par vainīgu, bet gan paziņoja, ka esot ticis nomelnots, un apsūdzības pret viņu sadomājuši viņam naidīgi ļaudis tiesībsargājošajās iestādēs. Viņš, raugi, esot tikai ieinteresēts, lai lietas tiktu iztiesātas kā klājas, taču tas atņemot viņam tik daudz laika, ka smagi nodarot pāri viņa darbam – valdības vadīšanai šai valstij tik grūtajā laikā. Šis arguments kā galvenais izvirzīts arī oficiālajā lūguma tekstā, kas iesniegts prezidentam Hercogam. Ar sarkasmu tiek atzīmēts, ka tie paši juristi, kuri šobrīd izvirza šo tēzi, savulaik argumentējuši, ka tiesāšanās netraucēšot Netanjahu pildīt premjera pienākumus. Taču, kā norāda eksperti, galvenā problēma šai gadījumā ir vainas un nevainīguma jautājuma kategoriskā apiešana. Tas padara prezidenta apžēlošanas aktu, ja tāds pat sekotu, ļoti apšaubāmu un, iespējams, arī tiesas ceļā apstrīdamu. Izraēlas juridiskajā praksē īsti nav domājams precedents, kad apžēlošana tiek piešķirta pirms tiesas sprieduma vai apsūdzētā vainas atzīšanas. Prezidenta apžēlošanas formulējums Izraēlas konstitūcijā gan tieši nedefinē šādus priekšnoteikumus, taču uz tiem diezgan nepārprotami norāda konstitūcijā lietotais apzīmējums „likumpārkāpējs”. Kā vienīgais precedents pirmstiesas apžēlošanai Izraēlas vēsturē ir t.s. „300. autobusa lieta” 1984. gadā, kad Izraēlas Iekšējās drošības un pretizlūkošanas dienesta aģenti nogalināja divus sagūstītus palestīniešu teroristus. Vainīgos toreiz apžēloja prezidents Haims Hercogs, tagadējā valsts galvas vectēvs. Tomēr toreiz Augstākā tiesa, kurā tika apstrīdēta apžēlošana, to apstiprināja ar argumentu, ka vainīgie bija atzinuši savu vainu. Formālā apžēlošanas lūguma izskatīšana paredz, ka atzinumu par to sagatavo Tieslietu ministrijas Apžēlošanas departaments, konsultējoties ar citām juridiskajām institūcijām. Pēc tam savus atzinumus vēl jāsniedz tieslietu ministram un prezidenta padomniekam juridiskajos jautājumos. „Balts pulveris”, nafta un asinis Karību ūdeņos Vakar, 2. decembrī, runājot ar presi Baltajā namā, ar valsts sekretāru Rubio pie labās un kara ministru Hegsetu pie kreisās rokas, prezidents Tramps paziņoja, ka ikviena valsts, kura ražo narkotikas, kas tiek iesūtītas ASV, varot rēķināties ar amerikāņu militāriem triecieniem. Venecuēla, kuru Baltā nama saimnieks apsūdz narkoterorismā, jau visai drīz saņemšot šādus triecienus pa savu teritoriju. Dienu iepriekš Tramps sociālo tīklu ierakstā bija ieteicis, citējot, „visām aviosabiedrībām, pilotiem, narkotiku tirgotājiem un cilvēku tirgotājiem” uzskatīt gaisa telpu virs un ap Venecuēlu par slēgtu. Tā vien šķiet, ka Savienotās Valstis gatavojas laist darbā militāros spēkus – kara flotes vienību ar pasaulē lielāko aviācijas bāzes kuģi „Henrijs Fords” priekšgalā un 15 000 lielu kontingentu –, kas koncentrēts pie Venecuēlas krastiem. Jau vairākus mēnešus amerikāņu jūras spēki te īstenojuši asiņainas medības, gremdējot motorlaivas, kuras, kā apgalvo Trampa administrācija, pārvadājot narkotikas. Nekādi skaidri pierādījumi tam, ka laivās tiešām bijuši tie „baltā pulvera maisi”, kurus piesauc Baltā nama saimnieks un viņa līdzgaitnieki, protams, netiek iegūti, bet šādā veidā uz viņpasauli aizraidīti jau apmēram astoņdesmit laivās kuģojušo. Kā norādījis Starptautiskās krimināltiesas eksperts, šāda Savienoto Valstu rīcība atbilst definīcijai par plānotiem un sistemātiskiem militāriem uzbrukumiem civiliedzīvotājiem miera laikā, kas ir starptautisko konvenciju pārkāpums. Trampa izvirzītās apsūdzības Venecuēlai saistās ar divu narkotisko vielu – kokaīna un fentanila – nelegālo eksportu. Kā raidsabiedrībai BBC norādījuši narkotiku apkarošanas eksperti, Venecuēla ir relatīvi mazsvarīga dalībniece globālajā narkotiku tirgū, pamatā narkotiku tranzītvalsts. Lielākā kokaīna ražotāja pasaulē ir Venecuēlas kaimiņvalsts Kolumbija, taču kolumbiešu „baltais pulveris” nonāk Ziemeļamerikā lielākoties ne caur Venecuēlu. Savukārt fentanils pamatā tiek ražots Meksikā un nonāk Savienotajās Valstīs praktiski tikai pāri abu valstu sauszemes robežai. Toties Venecuēlas teritorijā ir pasaules lielākie zināmie jēlnaftas krājumi – apmēram viena piektdaļa no kopējām planētas resursiem. Tehnoloģiskās mazspējas dēļ, kurā valsts naftas industriju novedusi gadu desmitiem valdošā sociālistu diktatūra, šobrīd Venecuēla iegūst mazāk kā procentu no pasaules jēlnaftas – trīs reizes mazāk kā pirms kreiso radikāļu nākšanas pie varas 1999. gadā. Krāpnieku izliktajās lamatās var iekrist ikviens no mums, bet lielāku neizpratni rada tie, kas pēc sāpīgās mācības nemācās neko un atkārtoti iekrīt krāpnieku nagos. Kāpēc tā notiek, raidījumā Kā labāk dzīvot vērtē kiberincidentu novēršanas institūcijas CERT.LV kiberdrošības eksperts Gints Mālkalnietis, programmatūras inženieris Elviss Strazdiņš un Valsts policijas Kibernoziegumu apkarošanas pārvaldes 2. nodaļas priekšnieka vietniece Solvita Sļadze. Ierakstā Rīgas Stradiņa universitātes psihosomatiskās medicīnas un psihoterapijas katedras docents Artūrs Utināns skaidro, ka mums ir divu sistēmu domāšana - ātrā un lēnā un krāpnieki mēģina ietekmēt tieši ātro domāšanas sistēmu, kas ir intuitīva un saistīta ar dažādām emocijām, piemēram, bailēm, šaubām un bažām. "Katru nedēļu tiek izkrāpti 460 līdz 500 tūkstoši eiro tiek izkrāpti. Līdz novembra beigām ir cilvēkiem Latvijā gandrīz 20 miljoni eiro izkrāpti tiešsaistes krāpšanās," norāda Solvita Sļadze. Solvita Sļadze norāda, ka "sarkanais karodziņš" ir, ja atnāk kāda saite īsziņā vai "WhatsApp" ziņā no viltus policista, bankas darbinieka vai kādai cita pakalpojumu sniedzēja un ir jāievada PIN1 un PIN2 vai kaut kas saistīts ar internetbanku, to nedarīt nekādā gadījumā. Kategoriski - nē. "Jāatceras kā noteikums, ja saņem īsziņas linku, kur tālāk ir maksāšana – uzreiz nē. Zaudējumu nebūtu, ja cilvēki to ievērotu," norāda Solvita Sļadze. "Otrs, ja piezvana un saruna aizvirzās, ka interesējas par naudu manā kontā vai par manu nekustamo īpašumu, kas tiek pārreģistrēts un tagad man jāpiedalās ar viltus policistu viltus eksperimentā, vai vispār ir interese par mantiskām lietām, arī nē. Paņemiet laiku sev, lai saprastu, kas notika, lai sazinātos ar banku, ar radinieku, kura vārdā jūs mēģina uzrunāt, stāstot, cik viņam ir slikti. Neskrieniet nekur." Elviss Strazdiņš piebilst, lai pierādītu savu identitāti, ir jāievada PIN1.  "Ja mistiska CSDD lapa prasa PIN2, tas automātiski ir sarkanais karogs," norāda Elviss Strazdiņš. "ievadot PIN1, ir tikai nedaudz slikti, var uz jūsu vārda paņemt kredītus un veikt zibmaksājumus, kas nebūs daudzi tūkstoši. Ja ievada PIN2, viss ir diezgan slikti." Pirmais –  vajadzētu paskatīties domēnu.  Pēdējā laikā krāpnieki zvana arī no Latvijas numuriem. Telefonkrāpšana ir liela problēma, kas cilvēkiem radījusi lielākos zaudējumus. Gints Mālkalnietis norāda, ka atkal parādījušās piramīdu shēmas, 90. gadu atblāzmas, kas aicina cilvēkus ieguldīt. Cilvēks cer naudu atgūt, iesaistās piramīdas shēmās un aicina cilvēkus, no kuriem aizņēmās, iesaistīties jaunajā krāpšanas shēmās. Visvairāk cilvēku atkārtoti nokļūst krāpnieku shēmās, kas saistītas ar investīcijām. Cilvēki cer, ka nākamais brokeris būs labāks, palīdzēs nopelnīt. "Kamēr cilvēks cels klausuli un maksās, tikmēr viņam arī zvanīs," atzīst Solvita Sļadze.

Koalīcija ir konceptuāli vienojusies par nākamā gada budžetu, bet viegls ceļš diez vai ir gaidāms, jo Zaļo un zemnieku savienība nāk ar savām prasībām budžeta atbalstam. Par vienu no tām – pievienotās vērtības nodokļa samazinātu likmi atsevišķiem produktiem vienošanās esot panākta, tomēr ir vēl arī citi jautājumi, kur vienoties varētu būt grūtāk. Tas ir lauku skolu tīkls un diskusija par mežu likumu arī varētu būt karsta. Katrā ziņā attiecības koalīcijā nākamā gadā gaidāmo Saeimas vēlēšanu apstākļos ir interesants temats. Tas ir viens no tematiem nedēļas notikumu apskatā, ko kopā ar žurnālistiem apspriežam raidījumā Krustpunktā. Autokrātu rudens? Teju katrā preses slejā, kas šajās dienās veltīta mēnešu mijā notikušajam Šanhajas Sadarbības organizācijas samitam Ķīnas ostas pilsētā Tjaņdzjiņā, tiek piesaukta „jauna pasaules kārtība”. Organizācija tika dibināta 2001. gadā kā sadarbības platforma starp Ķīnu, Krieviju un piecām kādreizējām padomju Vidusāzijas republikām. 2017. gadā organizācijai pievienojās Indija un Pakistāna, 2023. gadā – Irāna, 2024. gadā – Baltkrievija. Ir vēl vesela virkne valstu Eirāzijas telpā, kas atrodas ar organizāciju pastāvīga dialoga attiecībās, un ja pirmās pāris desmitgades šī valstu sasaiste bija drīzāk simboliska, tad pēdējos gados aina sāk mainīties. Šīgada samits ir plaši apmeklēts, un bez pastāvīgo dalībvalstu vadītājiem klāt ir arī tādas starptautiskajā politikā aktuālas figūras kā Turcijas prezidents Erdogans, Azerbaidžānas prezidents Alijevs, Armēnijas premjerministrs Pašinjans, Malaizijas premjerministrs Anvars Ibrahims un citi. Pasaules mediji citē samita namatēvu, Ķīnas kompartijas un valsts līderi prezidentu Sji Dzjiņpinu sakām, ka pašreizējā pasaule piedzīvo turbulenci, starptautiskās attiecības regulējošā sistēma „nonākusi krustcelēs” un tās dalībniekiem jābūvē jauna, „taisnīgāka un līdzsvarotāka”. Ar to, acīmredzot, jāsaprot pasaule, kurā krietni mazāka būtu tradicionālo Rietumu loma un svars. Pirmoreiz Pekina Šanhajas sadarbības organizācijas ietvaros lēmusi atbalstīt savus partnerus ar piešķīrumiem 280 miljonu dolāru un aizdevumiem miljarda un četrsimt miljonu apjomā. Kā ļoti nozīmīga tiek atzīmēta Indijas premjerministra Narendras Modi klātbūtne samitā, kas iezīmē manāmu attiecību uzlabošanos starp Indiju un Ķīnu, kuras katalizators nepārprotami bijusi Savienoto Valstu administrācijas svaidīšanās ar tarifiem abu šo valstu virzienā. Indijas gadījumā visai nesaudzīgo 50% tarifu ieviešanas motīvs bijusi Krievijas naftas iepirkšana, un šajā sakarā tiek izcelti samita kuluāru fotomirkļi, kuros sirsnīgi smaidot un rokas spiežot redzama trijotne – Sji, Modi un Vladimirs Putins. Vismaz ārēji no Rietumu līderu loka izraidītais Kremļa diktators šķiet atradis sev jaunu kompāniju, kuru viņa agresora un domājamā kara noziedznieka reputācija nesatrauc. Kā nozīmīgākie starp samita iezīmētajiem sadarbības virzieniem tiek atzīmēta arī perspektīva kopīgas attīstības bankas dibināšana un sadarbība mākslīgā intelekta attīstības un regulācijas jomā. Daudzi samita dalībnieki palikuši Pekinā arī pēc pasākuma beigām, lai piedalītos plašajās Otrā pasaules kara noslēguma 80. gadadienas svinībās. Indonēzijas tauta ielās Indonēzija ir iedzīvotāju skaita ziņā ceturtā lielākā valsts pasaulē un lielākā arhipelāga valsts, kuras teritorija sastāv no 17 000 salu un saliņu. Līdz pat pagājušā gadsimta beigām šī valsts vairāk nekā trīsdesmit gadus bija diktatūra, pēc tam pārtopot prezidentālā republikā ar ļoti plašām valsts galvas varas funkcijām un pamatos unitāru pārvaldes modeli, tomēr samērā plašu reģionālo pārvaldes institūciju autonomiju. Tiek atzīmēts, ka pēdējā desmitgadē valstī atkal pastiprinājušās antidemokrātiskas tendences, sevišķi pēc pašreizējā prezidenta, atvaļinātā ģenerāļa Prabovo Subianto nākšanas pie varas pagājušogad. Tagadējais valsts galva īsti neuzticoties civilajai pārvaldei un uzskatot, ka īstu efektu varot panākt tikai ar militāru kārtību. Armija tiekot palielināta, pie kam šobrīd lielākoties ar savdabīgiem „darba dienesta” bataljoniem, kuru kareivji nodarbojoties ar tādām bruņotajiem spēkiem gluži neraksturīgām funkcijām kā medikamentu un lauksaimniecības produktu ražošana. Martā tika pieņemts likums, kas atļauj militārpersonām ieņemt virkni amatu civilajā sfērā. Uz šī fona pagājušonedēļ valstī uzliesmoja protesti, kuru konkrētais iemesls ir parlamenta deputātiem piešķirtās dāsnās privilēģijas, tai skaitā kompensācijas par mājokļa īri galvaspilsētā Džakartā, kas desmit reizes pārsniedz minimālās algas lielumu. Jau sākotnēji notika demonstrantu sadursmes ar policiju, kur viena puse laida darbā akmeņus, otra – asaru gāzi un ūdensmetējus. Eļļu ugunij pielēja starpgadījums piektdien, kad policijas bruņumašīna demonstrācijas laikā sadūrās ar kurjera motociklu un tā vadītājs gāja bojā. Pēc tam pūlis vairākās provinces pilsētās ielauzās valdības ēkās un policijas iecirkņos, ēkas izdemolēja un aizdedzināja; tāpat tikuši postīti un dedzināti autobusi, metro stacijas un cita infrastruktūra. Izlaupītas un izdemolētas vairāku politiķu, arī finanšu ministres dzīvesvietas. Nekārtībām ir vēl vairāki upuri, tai skaitā trīs cilvēki gājuši bojā nemiernieku izraisītā ugunsgrēkā, vienu vīrieti pūlis piekāvis līdz nāvei, kļūdaini noturot par slepenpolicijas virsnieku. Policija līdz šim arestējusi vairāk nekā tūkstoti nemiernieku. Prezidents Prabovo, kurš nemieru dēļ atcēlis plānoto vizīti Ķīnā, paziņojis, ka pret postītājiem un laupītājiem varas iestādes vērsīšoties ar visu nepieciešamo bardzību, tomēr solījis arī apcirpt tautas kalpiem piešķirtās dāsnās kompensācijas. Tā esot neierasta piekāpšanās no atvaļinātā ģenerāļa puses. Sagatavoja Eduards Liniņš.

This is episode 225, and the Griqua have trekked from Philippolis near modern day Kimberley, to the Maluti Mountains, a place called Nomansland. In March 1861 Faku Ka-Ngqungqushe of the amaMpondo had ceded the territory to the British, ostensibly so that Theopholis Shepstone could plant the refugees of the Zulu Civil War there, but that idea was scotched, and the Cape Governor gave the territory over to the Griqua. By the time the great Griqua migration reached what would become Griqualand East, others had already begun trickling into this remote and mesmerising landscape — a highland plateau that straddles the transition between KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, hemmed in by the southern Drakensberg. At over 1,600 metres above sea level, winters bite hard here when the frost laces the sandstone ridges, and the mornings arrive cloaked in icy mist. But come spring, the veld stirs with startling vigour: the ground blushes green, and indigenous flora such as Watsonia pillansii or Pillans watsonia, Dierama reynoldsii fairy bell or hairbell, and the fiery Kniphofia caulescens — the Drakensberg red-hot poker, thrust their blooms skyward. Aloes cling to rocky outcrops, and if you're lucky, you might glimpse the iridescent flash of a malachite sunbird, the Nectarinia famosa, feeding on nectar, or hear the distinct call of the ground woodpecker aka Geocolaptes olivaceus echoing from a sandstone cliff. After an arduous few weeks from their farms near Philippolis, Kok's people arrived at Ongeluk's Nek and you know if you've listened to the previous podcast why it was given this name. ON the way they had passed passed through part of land claimed by Basotho king Moshoehoe, around the Hangklip area — that's just south east of Zastron today. Then began the arduous process of clearing a road down the mountain starting at Ongeluks Nek. It was no child's play. Every morning, according to the annals, men set about with pick and crowbar, hammer and drills, powder and fuse to dig out a track down the mountainside. It took weeks for the track to be hacked from the rock, and the 2000 men, women and children, their dogs and livestock, managed to slide and roll down the side heading towards a small settlement about six kilometers north of where the town of Kokstad is today. The Griqua had finally, in their minds, arrived at their promised land. Here were rolling hills, the lower Maloti, sweet tasting river water, springs, green grass. In the ravines there were forests and the Griqua began to cut down these trees to build houses.The fledgling Griqualand state began to emerge, murderers were executed, criminals were tried and convicted and the Volksraad gathered every six months to discuss laws. This elementary form of democracy featured lengthy discussions and very little note-taking. A chief officer was elected, called a Kaptyn like the Khoekhoe leaders of old, and a privy council or executive council as it was also known was setup.

With Anzac Day just around the corner, Born to Watch honours a defining moment in Australian cinema with our Gallipoli (1981) Movie Review. Directed by Peter Weir and starring a young, raw Mel Gibson alongside Mark Lee, this film is more than a war story, it's a devastating portrait of friendship, sacrifice, and the tragic cost of blind patriotism. Not just a day off to play two-up and hit the pub, but a moment to remember real sacrifice. The 1981 film still hits hard, they argue, because it doesn't sugarcoat the futility of war. And when that final freeze frame lands, it guts you, every time.There's admiration for director Peter Weir, whose resume includes Dead Poets Society, The Truman Show, and Master and Commander.
