Here's an idea: Around 2012, YouTube was undergoing a profound transformation from a novelty economy to a loyalty platform. This was largely driven by vlog culture, but another format was emerging: The video essay. But would Internet audiences (notorious for their ShOrT aTeNtIoN sPaNs!!!) watch longform, Socratic discussion of math, democracy, quantum mechanics, and Pokémon? Turns out: Yes. Through the power of public broadcasting, an extremely innovative YouTube show emerged called PBS Idea Channel. It was produced by a talented team of writers, researchers and producers, and its host – Mike Rugnetta – became the face of Internet curiosity during its 5 year and 400 video run. Today, you can't swing Schrödinger's dead cat without hitting a video essay with millions of views. Their popularity can be traced back to Mike and his colleagues, who in-turn credit the vloggers and comedians who inspired them in the early days of Web video. Mike joins Matt to discuss this rare time for Internet creativity, what it was like to build a large and intellectually curious community on YouTube, why he returned to his first love of audio design, how modern social media makes us so passive, and why he's thrilled that his many ongoing podcasts don't pay the bills. SERIES 3 EPISODE 13: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Did you HEAR Trump yesterday? Did you HEAR HIM TALK? He's in Howell, Michigan, where it might as well be Alabama in the year 1855, where they marched chanting “We Love Hitler, We Love Trump” a MONTH ago, and he came out at the County Sheriff's Office, and behind him with the cops as the props and if he had had ten times the energy and ten times the focus you would have said: what's wrong with Trump? Is he DYING or something? I mean I don't THINK he's dying, I think there are intermediate stages between having every single thing in a presidential campaign turn against you in a matter of two weeks and actually dying, but look if this mumble thing continues, at this rate they're going to have start putting live captions over him. Trump responded to the overture from the RFK Junior camp about dropping out if Trump would give him a role in his cabinet. “I didn't know he was thinking about getting out, but if he is thinking about getting out, certainly I'd be open to it.” RFK's running mate Nicole Shanahan appears to be doing the bargaining. Even she has figured it out: "We run the risk of a Kamala Harris and Walz presidency, as we draw votes from Trump. We draw, somehow, more votes from Trump. Or we walk away, right now, and join forces with Donald Trump…” Translation: bribe us and we'll go away. Looks like what they want is Secretary of Health and Human Services. THE SELF-DEFENESTRATION OF THE POLITICAL MEDIA: The Times really did it yesterday, with no sense of irony, no meta self-reflection: “Kamala Harris's tan suit was a surprising choice, our fashion critic writes.” The Post, meantime, did a DNC factcheck and got half a dozen things wrong: the Post insisted that there was no evidence that Trump ever sent love letters to dictators with Kessler writing “we do not know what Trump wrote to Kim Jong Un,” Media Matters went appropriately nuts. Of course we know. Trump showed them to… Bob Woodward of the Post. The factcheck now has its own factcheck. I recommend to you and will quote extensively from a masterpiece on this topic in The New Republic. Meredith Shiner writes: "after years of watching Morning Joe and searching for their birthdays in the Politico Playbook, they do not see their role as speaking to us, but rather speaking to themselves." Ex-effing-actly. B-Block (26:47) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Jesse Watters has rebirthed birtherism. He's sending "Johnny" to Hawaii to get the real story about Barack Obama's birth certificate because Harris. Amy Kremer, a GOP Committeewoman from Georgia, is the sucker born every minute. A liberal trolls the idiot Jack Posobiec by saying she'll have an abortion and a vasectomy onstage at the DNC and Kremer believes her. And Stephen L. Miller - the "other" Stephen Miller - uses the c-word about Mallory McMorrow with no self-awareness that it's used about him. C-Block (37:10) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: It was a lovely day in Fun City yesterday so I was out all day and I walked right past it: the bar out of which George Steinbrenner stepped one night in 1981 after I had spent the day trying to find... George Steinbrenner.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

SERIES 2 EPISODE 107: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump did NOT crush DeSantis and Haley in Iowa. The "takeaway" is not that he crushed DeSantis and Haley in Iowa. The "takeaway" is he beat the field by only 2,222 votes. And the reality is Trump got a total of 56,260 votes and that's about half the size of this podcast's daily audience. And Trump only got 51 percent OF the votes in Iowa and if President Biden only got 51 percent in a primary they would cancel everything on television for the next 26 days and cover nothing BUT Biden only getting 51 percent in a primary, right up until kickoff on Super Bowl Sunday 26 days from now. “Biden Crisis Day 26. We pause now for football. Here's the anthem. Join Wolf Blitzer, Tucker Carlson, David Axelrod, and Usher at halftime for a preview of Biden Crisis Day 27.” It's madness. Political media in this country has been in freefall since the 1990's – hell, I succeeded in it, no experience necessary – but it is hard to believe it has ever been worse, even more a victim of band-wagoning, even more a john overflowing unto eternity, each reporter abandoning reality and objectivity to prove that THEIR take was right or that their NEXT take is FIRST or that THEY can stuff more undeserved accolades into a sentence than anybody else. It's not that they are obsessed with the horserace – the horserace coverage is FINE. But when it's a pack of miniature ponies struggling to make it around a ten-foot track, SAY THAT, don't call them Secretariat and Man'o'War. Other REAL "takeaways" include Trump rolling out the new 2024 Con: his God Con, and Nikki Haley being utterly full of crap. And DeSantis realizing only too late that his path to victory was to turn on Trump and beat him senseless. Oh and Trump is deteriorating faster than ever before. If you mistake Biden for Obama, that's one thing. If you think the thing you rode down before you launched your campaign is an ESCALADE instead of an ESCALATOR... consult your physician! B-Block (21:26) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Gosh, where will Margie Green get her porn? House GOP may have dropped the Hunter Biden contempt plan. Knicks-Rangers owner James Dolan sued, accused of trafficking a woman to Harvey Weinstein. (23:46) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is so used to lying to its own morons it forgets the rest of the world needs to be slightly convinced. "Dudesy" steals George Carlin's jokes and calls it "A.I." Nate Cohn of The New York Times with a hiccup over "Hick-Up." C-Block (30:05) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Our 701-day snowless streak in Fun City is over and it got cold and clammy and as always I flashed back to the day my great doctor Ed Ceccolini gave me meds I wasn't ready for and the next thing I knew my face was stuck to the window of a commuter train in Grand Central because my drool had frozen onto it!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

SEASON 2 EPISODE 70: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) ELECTION SCOREBOARD: Democrats and democracy kick MAGA's ass: another Trump off-year disaster as Republicans not only don't flip the Virginia Senate, they've lost the Virginia House! Deep discounts on "PRESIDENT YOUNGKIN 2024" Red Vests! In Ohio, it's a landslide as Issue 1 wins by 57-43 and puts Abortion Rights INTO the Ohio Constitution. And Kentucky Democratic Governor Andy Beshear goes from winning by 4000 votes four years ago, to winning by five points last night. Plus there are expansions of Democratic control in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. It's another state-level disaster for Trump's GOP and what's the response of the CNN political director who whored himself out to get Trump live from that disastrous Kaitlan Collins Town Hall? David Chalian says "It's not the Democratic BRAND that's in trouble here, it's Joe Biden that's in trouble here." Actually that's not true either - and CNN should fire this idiot Chalian ASAP because it's CNN that's in trouble here. (9:43) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump managed to combine stochastic terrorism and his Dementia J. Trump/Elmer J. Fudd split personality in one post, insisting someone “must stop” people who don't realize he's worth billions more even than he claims. America's leading Parking Lot Legal Scholar Alina Habba insists they'll be filing for a mistrial because they didn't let Trump talk enough in court (oh, they let him talk enough in court). The good news is, Judge Chutkan shut them down on the latest delaying tactic. They wanted three more months for pre-trial motions; she told them she'll give them two weeks and they'll like it. And as more details emerge of Trump's plan for a military dictatorship, Jeff Clark, the mediocre little man who might be the Attorney General who oversees the transition of the DOJ into the Ministry of Vengeance will finally have to face having his law license suspended. While most reporting stays focused on Sunday's New York Times Biden poll crater, there's a new CNN poll that's a little better. And everybody ignores the work of a private, right-leaning pollster called Cygnal with eye-opening good news for President Biden. Not only has his net approval/disapproval improved a whopping five points in ONE MONTH but the issue seen as sinking Biden – inflation – is beginning to shrink its dominance. A year ago 42% said inflation was the key topic. Two months ago it was still 37%. Now it's down to 31%. The less it is decisive, the more it points to Biden's reelection. Still, Politico reports that after three months the Biden campaign has the results of its almost exclusively positive, issue-focused, non-Trump advertising: It's failed. Completely. The campaign is being urged to re-focus on Trump but remains reluctant, still convinced that Trump will be torn down enough by his Republican challengers (if it doesn't happen at tonight's debate, it won't). And more over, the question has to be raised: if you ARE selling Joe Biden's Greatest Accomplishments, isn't the first thing on that list, the fact that HE beat Trump? Wasn't the most vivid, youthful, meaningful moment of his presidency his Defense-Of-Democracy speech in Philadelphia last year? Isn't the greatest image of Biden, “Dark Brandon?” Joe? You beat him. You're the only one who has. We need you to do it again. And we need you to TELL US THAT. Not only WHY he and the evil he personifies and spreads MUST be defeated, but, bluntly, that you did it before and you will do it again: that you are the man to… beat the ever-loving shit out of him. B-BLOCK (30:49) IN SPORTS: Now begins the blowback. Wisconsin says goodbye and good riddance to no-longer-beloved-son Craig Counsell. The President of Mexico knows who the next manager of the Padres should be. And that drying up of the nourishing milk of ever-increasing TV fees for baseball? It just spread to basketball and hockey, where right now 26 teams are making $0 for telecasts during the 2024-25 season. (35:57) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The Washington Post followed up on its Trump Dictatorship piece with more good analysis and a Bothsidesist headline that would've looked stupid even above a travel story. There's yet ANOTHER scandal for new 5th String Speaker Mike Johnson. And yesterday he was excoriating Rep. Tlaib for hate and prejudice. A month ago he was promising to turn Gaza into a parking lot. It isn't which side you're on – it's that violence and destruction are fine as long as you're MAGA. C-BLOCK (41:24) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: The New York City Marathon ended Sunday night. I swear, there are people walking the streets of my Fun City, still wearing their gold medals indicating they ran the damn thing. It flashes me back to the days when the Marathon had to beg for me to do a preview for CNN, and to the nightmares I still have of anchoring the Los Angeles Marathon… on RADIO.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Meet Jonathan Hertzberg. After years of working for companies like IFC Films and Kino-Lorber, he decided to start Fun City Editions — a boutique home video label that specializes in re-issuing overlooked movies from the ‘70s and ‘80s on a stellar roster of collectible Blu-Ray releases. It's a totally DIY operation that he runs out of his home in New York (think of Jon as the Gabe of forgotten cinema) — and it's attracted the attention of hardcore cinephiles everywhere. Fun City's newest offering is the 1971 gem T.R. BASKIN — filmed in Chicago and starring Candice Bergen — and it just so happens that Ben and Scott recorded the audio commentary on the disc. So we had Jon on the show to ask him what he was thinking. And while he was here, we asked him to help us pick the best Chicago movies on a new FunCityChicago installment of WHAT'S THE BEST?!? The answers may surprise you. At least Gabe's will.
Cassandra Khaw is an award-winning game writer, and USA Today bestseller. Khaw's work can be found in places like Fantasy & Science Fiction, Lightspeed, and Tor.com. Khaw's first original novella, Hammers on Bone, was a British Fantasy award and Locus award finalist.Richard Kadrey is the New York Times bestselling author of the Sandman Slim supernatural noir series. Sandman Slim was included in Amazon's “100 Science Fiction & Fantasy Books to Read in a Lifetime,” and is in development as a feature film. Some of Kadrey's other books include King Bullet, The Grand Dark, Butcher Bird, and The Dead Take the A Train (with Cassandra Khaw). He's written for film and comics, including Heavy Metal, Lucifer, and Hellblazer. Kadrey also makes music with his band, A Demon in Fun City.It was great having the chance to speak to both of them and hear about their very different routes into the writing world, and how they came to collaborate on The Dead Take The A Train. SEASON 2 EPISODE 39: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:43) SPECIAL COMMENT: NOW the Deep State has done it! NOW the Deep State has made its 27-Dimensional Chess move to cement the place of THE conspiracy in place and it will be left only to a few patriots and the Dilbert Guy to carry the torch of truth. Because WE knew it didn't add up because Ray Epps had never been charged and now the evil genius bastards have CHARGED RAY EPPS. He could get up to 90 days and be fined maybe 500 dollars! American! The conspiracy to frame Donald Trump is the greatest conspiracy in the history of the world and it was designed to make it look like Trump lost the 2020 election and destroy Jon Voight's chances of winning a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Oscars and make Joe Rogan look stupid. Well, MORE stupid. And then when the LEAK happened – the provocateur – the FBI plant who started it all and whose fault it all is – Ray Epps talked all the Trump supporters into going into the Capitol even though the other part of the conspiracy says everybody who went INTO the Capitol was Antifa - when it was revealed by the investigative team of Maria Bartiromo and Cat Turd that the feds left one nearly invisible loose thread – that the Deep State claimed Ray Epps wasn't a plant yet they never CHARGED Ray Epps, they suddenly DID charge Ray Epps yesterday and the masterminds behind this vast earth-shattering conspiracy decided to cover their tracks and silence all protest forever by…charging him with one misdemeanor count of disruptive conduct and he's pleading guilty today. And yet there it is, across Right Wing Looney Tunes land, the utter conviction, the absolute certainty from each of them that they alone have noticed that Epps was charged with one negligible offense and has seemingly already made a plea deal and that the rest of the world didn't notice – everybody but Catturd, who valiantly stood up and braved assassination probably by typing “You're not fooling anyone, Feds!" Oh god are they stupid. And The Stupid was all around the circuit yesterday: somebody used Matt Gaetz's printer to produce a copy of his resolution to oust McCarthy as Speaker, then left it in a Baby-Changing Station to be found by a reporter. Tim Scott was stupid enough to attack unions. Trump attacked Biden with the 25th Amendment and got everything ABOUT the 25th Amendment wrong. And 46 Republican Senators wrote a letter complaining about the relaxed attire rules in the Senate when the owner of their party wears bronzer, spray paints his hair, and lives inside a baseball cap. B-Block (19:52) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Peter Baker thinks the job of the president of the United States has actually been made tougher by something written by a guy who is evidently a columnist for The Washington Post. Add it to the list: Trump either doesn't know how the 25th Amendment work or thinks his cultists don't. And a Texas school district fires a teacher for reading The Diary of Anne Frank to 8th Graders because it was too sexy. C-Block (27:32) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: My least favorite near-death experience? United Nations Week here in Fun City! My MOST favorite near-death experience? When the president of MSNBC chased me around the studios threatening to destroy me. God that was funny.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
SEASON 2 EPISODE 19: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: One of Trump's Georgia co-defendants is already PRE-flipping on him. And his Mar-a-Lago “Employee 4” got rid of his Trump-supplied lawyer and recanted testimony that almost got him brought up on perjury charges and guess who he was lying FOR because after he changed his tune, that's when Jack Smith added the new charges against Trump and the new co-defendant. The former Chairman of the Georgia Republican Party David Shafer – more importantly the former Quote “Chairman” unquote of the Georgia Fake Electors Slate - filed to switch his part of the trial to federal court and in his argument for doing so he added a small detail: this is all Trump's fault. “Mr. Shafer and the other Republican Electors iin the 2020 election,”write Shafer's attorneys, “acted at the DIRECTION OF THE INCUMBENT PRESIDENT and other federal officials. Attorneys for the President and Mr. Shafer specifically instructed Mr. Shafer, verbally and in writing,” write Shafer's attorneys, “that the Republican electors' meeting and casting their ballots on December 14, 2020 was consistent with counsels' advice and was necessary to preserve the presidential election contest.” Shafer even handed over evidence. Not just to Fonni Willis but to the public. That December 14th sham electors' vote? Shafer released a copy of the TRANSCRIPT of that gathering of the coven and the guy who addressed them beforehand was Ray Smith, another one of Trump's co-defendants and oh by the way Trump's local attorney of record in Atlanta who walked the suckers through their part in the coup attempt. And in the Florida case, Jack Smith answered Judge Aileen Cannon's confused query in a now-unsealed filing and revealed matter-of-factly that this was because the District of Columbia Grand Jury had been hearing evidence that maybe one of the witnesses – Mar-a-Lago Employee Number 4 – should be charged with perjury because while he still had Trump stooge Stanley Woodward as his attorney, he testified that he didn't know nothing about nobody erasing no security video from no servers and never heard nobody say The Boss Wanted The Servers Deleted. And then somebody told Employee Number 4 that he'd just committed perjury and he DID see the light and doth repented and got a new attorney from the Public Defenders' office. And the next thing you knew, Employee Number 4 – Trump's I-T guy, Yuscil Taveras, was remembering clear as a bell and suddenly the guy who said “The Boss Wanted The Servers Deleted” had become the latest indicted victim of the maxim “Everything Trump Touches, Dies” and his name is Carlos De Oliveira and he is still a defendant but if you want to draft somebody in your fantasy Who Flips First in Florida league, pick him. And oh yeah, as soon as Taveras got his OWN attorney and not the same one Walt Nauta has, Smith filed three more counts against Trump. B-Block (17:10) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Vivek, caught lying, on tape, the day before the GOP debate? He's the Ron DeSantis of Scott Walkers. The full pre-debate nonsense, and Jair Bolsonaro may have pawned two high-end watches given to him by other governments, and the "Rich Men North of Richmond" singer had his 15 Days of fame. Now they've discovered Oliver Anthony is the reverse Milk Shake Duck: he's NOT racist. (24:34) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The weekly Eric Adams disaster here in Fun City. Greg Abbott has an ugly soul. And the Republican National Committee and Jeanine "Hooters Pants On a 72-Year Old" Pirro attack Biden on... talking to a rescue dog? C-Block (29:30) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I was reminded of him the other day so I thought it was time to tell a few stories about a man whose absence is still so shocking, so wrong, so something you wish you could correct: Tony Gwynn.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

EPISODE 175: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:42) SPECIAL COMMENT: A week ago, frankly, none of us OUTSIDE Nashville knew whether the Tennessee's State Government had a House, a Senate, an Assembly, a Parliament, a Duma, was inflated or stuffed. Yesterday, Justin Jones was reinstated to the Tennessee House. Tomorrow, Justin Pearson will be. I am trying to think of exactly WHAT Republicans got out of this. The two young representatives will have been out of office for a total of four days, MAYBE five. They went from obscure state legislators to superstar magnets drawing international coverage. They provided energy and hope to the movement, support for which had inspired the racist acts of a racist legislative body, to do SOMETHING about the epidemic of gun violence in this country. The forces of right have not had a real WIN in perhaps two decades and even though this one is just symbolic, it resonates: it shows us that the whole thing is NOT impossible to fight, and that dramatic and important milestones can occur almost spontaneously, virtually immediately, breathtakingly panoramically. Plus: The Senate Judiciary Committee will actually HOLD A HEARING INTO SCOTUS CORRUPTION! Trump and Rhonda Santis are at it again. Melania apparently has a new contract. And Jim Jordan is coming to Fun City! There goes the neighborhood. B-Block (20:23) SPECIAL COMMENT: The latest mass gun slaughter was at a bank, 11 days after Ted Cruz had insisted the solution to mass gun slaughter was to put as many armed guards in schools as they have in those impregnable fortresses: banks. The solution isn't guns, it isn't mental health checks, it's money. We must financially crush the people for whom gun violence is a profit center. And I mean crush the businesses, the politicians, and if need be, the states. C-Block (40:25) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: His ratings debacle at the new CNN reminded me to tell you of the time Bill Maher and I almost had a fistfight at his after-show party, because I insisted I was "aware" of him when we overlapped in college. It turned out my barely-remembered "awareness" of him at Cornell was ALSO of a near-fistfight...in 1978!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hello “Fun City Cinema” subscribers - long time no see! The show is still on hiatus, as your hosts Jason Bailey and Mike Hull have been working very hard on “A Very Good Year,” a new podcast with a simple premise: each week we invite a guest (filmmakers and actors, critics and historians, comedians and musicians) who loves movies, and ask them to select their favorite year of movies. We then spend (about) an hour talking about that year: we ask them to share their top five films of the year; we look at the year's news headlines, award winners, and box office champions; and we finish with a lightning round. If you haven't subscribed to that show yet - well, you should! But if you need a bit more enticing, we wanted to share our first episode, in which we're joined by actor ("Bill & Ted," "The Lost Boys," and, most relevant to you Fun City folks, "Death Wish 3"), filmmaker ("Zappa," "The YouTube Effect"), and all-around good guy Alex Winter to discuss his very good year: 1931. Enjoy!
