We headed to Silicon Valley to chat with SimpleLegal founder Nathan Wenzel in Episode 26. Nathan has a great legal tech startup story–from idea to acquisition. SimpleLegal provides legal operations software to help corporate legal teams run their departments, manage their legal operations and monitor finances. (This type of software is sometimes referred to as ELM software or “enterprise legal management” software.) The early days of SimpleLegal were spent at Y Combinator, Silicon Valley’s highly respected start up accelerator. The company was one of the first legal tech companies YC accepted. After completing the program, Nathan and his team raised a seed round and then a $10 million Series A round to grow the company. Fast forward to 2019 and Onit came knocking. Onit is another company providing enterprise software for in-house legal departments and legal ops teams. Onit acquired SimpleLegal in May, 2019. Nathan talks about his legal tech journey and what it was like to raise money when investors were not as familiar with legal technology companies. Learn more about SimpleLegal, and be sure to check out their great blog covering legal ops and in-house legal topics. The company also has a great legal ops resource center too. Technically Legal is hosted by Chad Main, an attorney and the founder of Percipient, a tech-enabled alternative legal services provider.

355: SimpleLegal - How Legal Tech Startups Are Disrupting the Industry

The Tech Blog Writer Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 14, 2017 23:04

Technology is revolutionizing multiple industries as the digital transformation of everything gathers pace. I have recently spoken with businesses and CEOs about healthtech, edtech and fintech, but I wanted to find out more about legal tech. Legal technology, also known as Legal Tech, refers to the use of technology and software to provide legal services. Legal Tech companies are generally startups founded with the purpose of disrupting the traditionally conservative legal market. SimpleLegal provides modern legal operations software to streamline the way corporate legal departments manage their matters, track and interpret spend, and collaborate with vendors and law firms. By combining e-Billing, matter management, accruals automation, and advanced reporting into one comprehensive solution, they centralize the functions and data needed to make better decisions and more efficiently manage an entire legal department. Their story started when facing frustration with their own existing software tools. Sure, they did the job, but they were far too cumbersome. One customer likes to use the term “clunky” to describe their former solution. In the Facebook Era, enterprise software shouldn’t be clunky. Then law firms advised that they didn’t like eBilling software. To them, it’s just one more time-consuming process that has nothing to do with actually taking care of their clients. But, they wanted law firms to like their software. SimpleLegal was then created to be Simple for law firms, too. The team believes that Software as a Service is fundamentally different than traditional enterprise software. SaaS isn’t just about “no software installation required.” After all, what good is “no installation” if configuring the application is still difficult? User setup, law firm registration, and the seemingly endless list of options are the problem. SimpleLegal is streamlined Matter Management and eBilling software without all the overhead common in legacy vendors' software. Customers range from new startups to global, public multi-$B companies. Customers use SimpleLegal to get transparency into their legal spend, save time, and save money. I invited Nathan Wenzel, CEO of SimpleLegal onto the show to learn more about how legal tech is disrupting the industry.

In this episode, I interview Nathan Wenzel, CEO of SimpleLegal, about the emerging field of legal operations. Although legal is one of the oldest professions (and one that is instrumental in operating a successful business), it’s only recently that companies have started to bring on dedicated legal operations specialists to more efficiently run the department. Legal operations is responsible for managing the money spent on lawyers and law firms to ensure the best return on investment. Nathan tells us all about this new function and how data is changing how companies run their corporate legal departments.

Nathan Wenzel is the Founder & CEO @ SimpleLegal, the startup that helps legal operations reduce legal spend and improve operational efficiency. They recently raised their $10m Series A led by leading SaaS investors, Emergence Capital with participation from our favourites in the team at Susa Ventures and Rincon Venture Partners. As for Nathan, prior to founding SimpleLegal he spent time in consulting and as a Partner @ BI analytics firm, Edge Solutions.   In Today’s Episode You Will Learn: 1.) How Nathan made his way from consulting to BI analytics to founding one of SaaS's hottest "overnight successes" in SimpleLegal? 2.) Why does Nathan advocate for the slow and steady approach in startups? What type of business does this make sense for? Does this not go contra the traditional theory of move fast and break things? 3.) Nathan has said before that "most bay area millennials have not seen market corrections". How does Nathan's experience seeing these corrections affect his running of SimpleLegal? Why does Nathan think we have an impending market correction to come? 4.) Why must founders always know the day that they will become profitable? How does that change the way they operate and strategise the running of the business? Why is it also crucial for them to know their zero cash day? 5.) What did John really look for in his investors? What questions should founders ask potential investors pre-investment?
