Undefeated and ominous-looking Ireland now lead the Six Nations Championship after two rounds in 2025, but England's late win over France will remain a talking about for a while yet, as Brett McKay & Harry Jones launch into another Weekend Post-Mortem for The 8-9 Combo Rugby Podcast. Scotland showed some but not enough grit before going down to Ireland at Murrayfield, England's 80th minute winner to beat France by 1 will keep Twickenham Man happy for weeks, and Italy were just way too good for a Wales who still might not have hit rock bottom. With the start of Rugby's Six Nations Championship this weekend, that's where we kick off this week's episode. France were led by the imperious Antoine Dupont in their win over Wales, Scotland and Italy offered an intriguing tussle which was closer than the final scoreline might show, whilst England were probably flattered by a 5 point loss in Dublin. After their winter Break, Netball's stars are back in action as England host a quad series with South Africa, Malawi and Uganda. Following a convincing win over Malawi the Red Roses were then just edged out by South Africa. They face the final group game against Uganda on Saturday, before the medal placing round on Sunday in London. Australia completed their humiliation of England in the Women's Ashes Cricket - a resounding innings defeat condemning the tourists to a 16-0 whitewash defeat. England's male counterparts also slid to their worst ever T20 defeat, being all out for just 97 and losing by 150 runs. We also have a Super Bowl preview, the latest in our “Rugby League Challenge Cup road to Wembley” status, and updates from the worlds of Tennis, Golf and Winter Sports. Finally Tony fires a broadside, this time at the TV companies trying to drum up excitement about the dead parrot non-event that transfer deadline day has become.

The Six Nations Championship has begun for 2025, with France and Ireland laying down statement wins in Round 1, providing Brett McKay & Harry Jones with the perfect platform to kick off the new Weekend Post-Mortem for The 8-9 Combo Rugby Podcast. France were completely dominant in their 43-0 win over hapless Wales in Paris on Friday night, with Scotland's 31-19 win over Italy in Edinburgh, and Ireland's patient 27-22 win over England in Dublin completed the opening weekend with bonus points for all three winners. Also: Japan's Rugby League One Rd.7 action gets a mention. #rugby #rugbypodcast #89Combo #SixNations Find us: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@8-9Combo?sub_confirmation=1 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1BcKhb24YOtwQhKc0S3sDm Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-8-9-combo-rugby-podcast/id1729575866 Social media: #89Combo Twitter: https://twitter.com/89combo BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/89combo.bsky.social Find Brett and Harry on both Twitter and on BlueSky: @BMcSport + @HaribaldiJones Music: "Stalling" by Topher Mohr & Alex Elena (via YouTube Creator Studio) Learn more about your ad choices. We sent Bernard Jackman to a dumpling class, as this week is of the beginning of the Six Nations Championship and the Lunar New Year.
There are many deadly sins on the rugby field, but just which of the Seven Deadly Sins broadly apply to the Six Nations teams was pondered by The Telegraph's Charlie Morgan, who joined Brett McKay & Harry Jones for the latest episode of second season of The 8-9 Combo Rugby Podcast. Harry, of course, has committed most of those deadly sins on the rugby field, but he was intrigued with the idea of applying the Seven Deadly Sins to each of England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, and Italy and where they currently sit as we enter the 2025 Six Nations Championship. You just will not have ever heard a tournament preview done like this before. #rugby #rugbypodcast #89Combo #SixNations Find us: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@8-9Combo?sub_confirmation=1 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1BcKhb24YOtwQhKc0S3sDm Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-8-9-combo-rugby-podcast/id1729575866 Social media: #89Combo Twitter: https://twitter.com/89combo BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/89combo.bsky.social Find Brett and Harry on both Twitter and on BlueSky: @BMcSport + @HaribaldiJones Music: "Stalling" by Topher Mohr & Alex Elena (via YouTube Creator Studio) Voiceovers by Chookman + Sean Maloney Learn more about your ad choices. Are cyborgs now reality? Elon Musk certainly thinks so. His company, Neuralink, has successfully implanted one of its wireless brain chips in a human. Although billed as a breakthrough, they're not the first to do it. In fact, similar devices have already been implanted, all with the aim of connecting our brains to computers with the aim of tackling complex neurological conditions. Joining Inside Science is neuroscientist and author, Dean Burnett. In this episode, Dean helps to break down the technology behind the brain-computer interface and digs into the ethical implications. Plus, game changing smart technology gets a run out as Rugby Union's Six Nations Championship kicks-off. This year, all players will be wearing “Smart Mouth Guards.” These are intelligent gum shields containing miniature gyroscopes, accelerometers and Bluetooth, which provide - with incredible accuracy - a measure of the magnitude and frequency of forces experienced by players. An athlete making their international debut in this competition could have their entire collision history mapped from now until retirement, providing invaluable information for training and treatments. Crucial not only for elite squads, but ultimately for community and schools rugby where the technology will eventually land, leading to a safer game. And finally, it turns out that we can actually understand chickens even if we've never met them before! After assessing a group of around 200 volunteers, a team at the University of Queensland has discovered that humans with no experience of chickens at all, could understand the birds' calls of satisfaction, or frustration. The research has serious implications for what's known as precision farming, an area of livestock farming with little, to no, human interaction that requires automated systems of welfare detection using sound recognition. Dave Kearney, a product of the highly regarded Leinster academy, came through the rigorous selection process and made his debut for Leinster in 2009 having starred for the Ireland U20s that season. With the family having a strong history in Irish sport Dave credits an early Gaelic football career with Cooley Kickhams in Louth as contributing factor for his undoubted skill set within rugby. He went on to establish himself as a pivotal member of the Leinster squad and has gone on to make over 100 caps for his native province. Fearless under the high ball and the finishers instinct, Dave was first called into the Ireland squad in 2013, making his debut v Samoa and scored 2 tries. His decision making under pressure saw him bypass alot of Irish wings and he quickly became a permanent fixture at both club and country. Highly regarded by Joe Schmidt, he was an ever present in the 2014 Six nations Championship winning team, playing every minute alongside his brother Rob and Jamie Heaslip. He was also member of the Ireland World Cup squad in 2015.His consistency and ability to play anywhere across the back three, has been a key attribute to his success as a rugby player as well as his unselfish team first attitude. He has scored over 25 tries for Leinster and 4 for Ireland in a 17 cap career to date with his last cap coming in November 2017 v Fiji. With success breeding success breeding success he has won the Pro 14 on 3 occasions as well as the Heineken Cup and Six Nations Championship, where he had made a significant impact with his consistent fielding and ability to read defences and capitalise on any errors with his attacking acumen. A diligent and disciplined trainer and popular squad member, Dave has a lot to offer both on and off the pitch and has also concluded a degree in Sponsorship and Brand Management. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/portraitsofclongowes/message

Today we spoke with Joy Neville - former Ireland women's rugby union international and current IRFU referee Joy is a former Ireland women's rugby union international and a current rugby union referee. As a player Neville represented Ireland at both the 2006 and 2010 Women's Rugby World Cups, captaining the first Ireland team to defeat France in that period. After retiring as a player she took up being a referee. She has taken charge of matches in the Women's Six Nations Championship, the World Rugby Women's Sevens Series and the Rugby World Cup, including the 2017 final. Neville has also achieved a number of firsts as a female referee in the men's game - a Pro14 match when she took charge of a 2017-18 fixture between Ulster and the Southern Kings - wait for the story from that game! This also saw Neville become the first woman to referee a top-level men's rugby union match in the UK. She is professionally contracted with the IRFU, has been a TMO, and is based in Limerick. Today we spoke about her journey to being a ref from a player, what makes an excellent referee - and what the prep and post-game processes look like. We heard about the challenges of being a referee, finding a balance between home and work with travel, and her varied officiating roles. We explored how to counter doubt and mistakes - and her fundraising and giving back work. This one is inspiring...about embracing challenges!

In our the second episode of this collection we revisit the conversation between Niamh Martin-McGarrigle and Hollie Davidson who talk about social media trolls, changing paths and finding confidence in yourself. This episode is hosted by Amalie Sortland, who joined us un the summer of 2019 and stayed until March 2020. She graduated in politics as part of the class of Covid in 2020. Niamh is a second-year French and Linguistics student at the University of Edinburgh. She is also the Projects Manager at FreshSight, a student-led consultancy that aims to create positive social impact through the provision of practical, sustainable and innovative business solutions. Hollie is Scottish Rugby's first contracted female referee. She had played for Scotland U20 but after a shoulder injury, she hung up her playing boots and picked up the whistle instead. After graduating from the University of Edinburgh in 2014 in Economic History, Hollie worked in finance for two years. She has refereed in a number of major tournaments including the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Rugby World Cup Sevens, and the 2019 Women's Six Nations Championship. Each episode of Sharing things is a conversation between two members of our university community. It could be a student, a member of staff or a graduate, the only thing they have in common at the beginning is Edinburgh. We start with an object. A special, treasured or significant item that we have asked each guest to bring to the conversation. What happens next is sometimes funny, sometimes moving and always unexpected.Find out more at www.ed.ac.uk/sharing-things-podcast This episode of Sharing things was recorded before the Covid thing.
