Ep. 124. Siya Kolisi, the captain of the Springbok rugby team, believed his World Cup dreams were shattered when he injured his cruciate ligament six months before the Rugby World Cup in France. It was his teammates Pieter-Steph du Toit and Handré Pollard who suggested consulting Dr Willem van der Merwe, a Cape Town orthopaedic surgeon and former Free State all-rounder cricketer. Rachel Kolisi appealed to her social media supporters to pray for the Bok captain, hoping for a miracle. After 119 days led his team onto the Millennium pitch in Cardiff in April 2022, marking a recovery of less than 4 months—significantly shorter than the typical 6-9 months athletes endure. In an interview with Biznews, Dr. van der Merwe attributed Kolisi's recovery more to the captain's mindset than medical procedures, though he acknowledged making slight adjustments to the surgery to ensure graft protection. Dr. van der Merwe emphasised the significance of the signals doctors convey to patients, revealing that he advised Kolisi against using crutches and encouraged him to cycle, despite objections from the physio who deemed it too early. The response from peers was predominantly negative, with a French orthopaedic surgeon even berating him for jeopardising Kolisi's future. According to Dr. van der Merwe, athletes like Kolisi and others, including Chad le Clos, possess a unique presence and confidence. When faced with adversity, they believe in themselves, a trait he regards as truly special. - Linda van Tilburg

In a few short years, she went from training Nick Bare for his first Ironman to running one of the most accomplished triathlon teams in the country. We first had the chance to meet Natasha the day before our first Ironman in Waco, Texas in the fall of 2021. While we weren't her athletes, she made a point to track us during the race and check in to see how we were doing. Since then, we've become great friends and she's played an incredibly important role in mentoring us over the last two years that we've known her. But, we are not alone. Natasha coaches and mentors many of her athletes in triathlon, as well as life. She's a true leader, and NVDM Coaching is a true testament to her love for her athletes and her commitment to putting God first in everything she does. In our conversation with Natasha, we discussed: Her path from professional tennis to NVDM Coaching What makes NVDM Coaching different Building mental toughness as an athlete What she learned coaching Nick Bare Putting God first in her business and life We're incredibly honored to call Natasha a friend, and we hope you find value in our conversation. What happens when trauma imprints itself onto your brain? How can we navigate the intricacies of our own healing journey? Join us as we grapple with these questions alongside Jessica Van der Merwe, a highly skilled mental health counselor and certified brain spotting therapist. Our discussion takes us deep into the world of trauma, dissecting its many forms from standalone traumatic events to ongoing, complex trauma. Jessica unravels the ways our early relationships with caregivers can shape and impact us, and passionately advocates for the destigmatization of trauma to pave the way for more open, healing conversations.Trauma has a curious way of lodging itself within the limbic system of our brains, where memories, emotions, and non-verbal experiences reside. As we explore this intricate process with Jessica, we gain an understanding of how trauma can render a person feeling overwhelmed or unnerved by their own triggers. But it's not all doom and gloom — Jessica emphasizes the power of awareness as the first step on the path to recovery, reminding us that healing is a journey, often slow-paced yet continually forward-moving.Jessica equips us with strategies for building self-trust and fostering empathy during the therapeutic process. We delve into the role of the prefrontal lobes in cultivating curiosity, and the importance of bringing a wise, adult self to this journey. Wrapping up, Jessica shares her valuable insights on how to initiate the healing process from trauma, emphasizing the importance of understanding our body's reactions and acknowledging the crucial role of trust. In this episode I caught up with Bronwyn Van Der Merwe, VP of Design at Culture Amp. We speak about Design Culture and tap into Bronwyn's absolutely incredible background and personal experience that saw Bronwyn spearhead the evolution of Fjord in APAC regions. What were the key things that Bronwyn did to ensure the scalability of a design culture at Fjord in Australia, and also when it scaled into Asian regions like Singapore and Japan. How did they balance the local culture in each region and touch on how this was handled as the merger between Fjord and Accenture unfolded, that ultimately saw two cultures merge. We speak about Bronwyn's past, tapping into their Commerce background, and how this ultimately provides them with a brilliant lens to peer through when looking at the commercial impact of Design. We chat about the work that they are doing at Culture Amp, and the special culture that is unfolding within the business. I say this lightly, but this is a must listen to anyone in Design leadership. Originally from South Africa, founder, CEO and head coach Natasha van der Merwe has built a unique coaching business in Austin, Texas. NVDM Coaching has seen explosive growth over the last two years, and while catering to athletes of all abilities, many have gone on to win age groups or podium spots in a number of Ironman races. Van der Merwe and her coaching staff have also developed a special knack for helping athletes build a lifestyle around their sport through careful training management, testing and periodization. Listen in as she and Dirk Friel dive into training methodologies, tips for success and how pulling back the focus from race results to personal development leads to better athletes. Quoted: "The last year [of my career] was my best year because I was after personal development. I wasn't after race results anymore. I was after, "How could I be the best athlete, and what did that look like?" And then, in turn, I saw myself becoming the best person and the best coach. And so we try to kind of hit that early on."
Ireland legend Brian O'Driscoll joined Joe Molloy to look back at the opening weekend of this year's Six Nations Championship.

These iconic big cats are one of Africa's most important predators; playing a crucial role in all the ecosystems in which they are occur. Cheetahs have been extirpated from 90% of their range across Africa and Asia, but people like Vincent van der Merwe are working tirelessly to see the species rebound. In this podcast, we hear from Vincent on the history of cheetah and the challenges which are facing the species, as well as the importance of the species and the efforts being made to protect and conserve them. We also learn about the concept of metapopulations, and how this management strategy is crucial to bringing the world's fastest cat back from the edge of extinction.
Louis van der Merwe is the Director of Wealthup, an independent advice practice based out of Cape Town, South Africa that oversees the U.S. equivalent of almost $600 million in assets under management for 115 households. Louis and his partner initially developed a robo-advice technology prototype that automated client services, but after it failed to gain traction, they pivoted to a “fully human” financial planning practice instead. Listen in as Louis shares his journey of developing—and then pivoting away from—the robo-advice prototype that he built with his partner, as well as why he ultimately decided to leave the firm he was at after they refused to purchase the prototype despite being interested in it. We also discuss why Louis feels that his young age gave him an advantage when starting his own firm, why he feels that running his firm is just as challenging today as it was when he first started, and how his definition of success has changed from the early days of his career. South Africa has an awkward history with payday lending and payday adjacent lending, so I was a touch concerned when I first heard that a fresh pair of South African entrepreneurs were looking to shake up the industry. Luckily, all my concerns were misplaced, because SmartWage is not looking to rethink payday lending, they're looking to make it redundant. You can read more about SmartWage at https://www.smartwage.co.za/ In today's episode, we talk about digitising communication between employers and employees, removing trucks' worth of paperwork, and proving earned wage access.Follow Carolyn van der Merwe on LinkedIn for news on SmartWage but also updates from the Yale Africa Startup Review (or just head there directly at https://www.yasr.org/)Follow Simon Ellis on LinkedIn for news on SmartWage but also his thoughts on leadership and his podcast hot tips - including The Knowledge Project and The Tim Ferris Show which were mentioned. You can learn more about myself, Brendan le Grange, on my LinkedIn page (feel free to connect), my action-adventure novels are on Amazon, some versions even for free, and my work with ConfirmU and our gamified psychometric scores is at https://confirmu.com/ and on episode 24 of this very show https://www.howtolendmoneytostrangers.show/episodes/episode-24If you have any feedback or questions, if you would like to participate in the show, or if you'd like to find full written transcripts with timestamps head on over to HowtoLendMoneytoStrangers.ShowRegards,Brendan See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
