Does the Washington flag need a facelift?

Earlier this year Edmonds state Representative Strom Peterson put forward a bill to potentially change the state’s flag. HB 1938 would have created a committee tasked with redesigning the Washington’s iconic green and yellow banner – which is the only one with a presidential profile on it. According to the bill’s language, the due date for a new design would be sometime in 2028 – after which, voters would decide through a referendum whether to adopt it. Peterson says his idea isn’t about controversy over our state’s namesake; it’s mainly about the way it looks. Peterson says that the times, and the state, have changed in the century since then. So maybe it’s time the flag changes too. But HB 1938 has hit a roadblock. The bill failed to pass out of committee last week, meaning Peterson will have to wait another year before trying again. There’s been a recent wave of flag redesigns across the United States. Minnesota and Utah adopted new state flags in 2024. Maine voters went the other way and rejected a new sleeker design for their flag. Mississippi also recently updated its state flag – it included the Confederate battle flag up until 2021. But even with the bill tabled, what makes for a good flag? It’s something that vexillologist Ted Kaye thinks a lot about. Kaye is the author of “Good Flag, Bad Flag: how to Design a Great Flag" and is also the secretary for the North American Vexillological Association. Soundside was joined by Rep. Peterson and Kaye to discuss the state's banner legislation. Guests: State Representative Strom Peterson, D-Edmonds, sponsor of HB 1938. How to Design a Memorable Logo (Whether You Do It Yourself or Work with a Designer)

Ashley Speaks. You Learn.

Think about the worst logo you've ever seen—what comes to mind? If you're having trouble thinking of one, that's not surprising. Good logos stick. Bad ones don't. That's what makes designing a logo different from designing other branding materials. Web banners, ads, and social media posts each have their own design objectives, but none are as focused on being remembered as a logo. Some of the best logos are the least complicated—think of the Nike swoosh or the McDonald's golden arches. Ted Kaye, of the North American Vexillological Association, says flag designs should be simple enough that a child can draw them from memory. The same is true of logos. Your logo is not your brand—you build that separately—but it will become the face of your brand. It will appear on your website, your products, your marketing, your in-store signage, and just about any other place where people interact with your brand. No matter your budget, you deserve a logo you feel good about. That's why we put together this guide. We'll walk you through every step of the process to create a business logo from scratch—from choosing a color to hiring a designer—with the help of real in-house graphic artists. What is a logo and why does it matter for your business? How much should a logo design cost? How to design a logo: A step-by-step guide Hiring a designer Designing a logo for free (or cheap) Logo design tips and common mistakes Conclusion What is a logo and why do you need one? A logo is a symbol that represents your brand and your brand's personality through the simplest image possible. Logos embody your brand in the minds of your customers. Without one, they have nothing to latch onto. Here's why: Humans learn from visual cues If there's something about your brand you want your customers to know, science says images are more effective than words in communicating it. If images have this power to convey ideas, then the image that will appear most often in your branding is potentially the most important. Logos are the fastest and easiest way to brand your products If you've ever been in a corporate office, you may have noticed a large number of items branded with the company's logo, like pens, notebooks, bags, or clothing. The Shopify office even has a branded skateboard: Branded swag can be handed out at trade shows, given as gifts to potential clients, and even sold in-store. Good conversation can be forgotten a lot quicker than the branded pen a client finds at the bottom of their swag bag. Logos provide a visual base to draw from for graphic design Brand consistency is a key element in developing a lasting impression. By having a definitive representation of your brand at its most base level, you'll have something to draw from when designing other marketing elements. Logos help you stand out from the competition Certain symbols or icons are associated with certain industries. Think of how many medical supply businesses use variations of a red cross in their logos. When there are a lot of businesses competing for the same market, distinguishing yourself is the key to getting noticed and remembered. A logo provides many advantages, so it's not hard to understand why nearly every business has one. Going logo-less looks unprofessional. It comes across as illegitimate, even untrustworthy. How much should a logo design cost? Once you've decided you need a logo, you next need to figure out whether you should design your own or hire a designer. Designing a logo that's unique but also simple enough to be remembered isn't something that's easy for amateur designers. Do what you'd do in any aspect of your business and hire a professional if you have the budget. But how much should a logo cost? The cost of a logo design can vary significantly based on the experience level of the designer you hire. Logos can be exceedingly expensive, incredibly cheap, or even free. You can look at a designer's portfolio, but there's still no definitive way to know the quality of ...

It's a flag expert, a person who deeply understands both the art and the near-scientific aspects of flag design, the symbolism used, along with the history and the usage of flags (from personal, to national, to international organization flags).  Vexillologist, or flag expert, Ted Kaye, speaks with SYP host Brad Weswood, for the second time, to lay out, as simply as possible, the essential aspects of good flag design. Kaye served on the committee which selected Salt Lake City's new flag in 2020. He also advised some years ago the unsuccessful Salt Lake Tribune's campaign for a new flag for Utah. The Utah Legislature, Governor Spencer Cox and Lieutenant Governor Deidre Henderson, are all exploring the idea of a new flag for Utah. Earlier this year we produced the episode, “Run It Up the Flagpole…” Utah Considers a New State Flag  in which the two legislators who sponsored the bill(s), Stephen Handy and Daniel McCay, along with local political historian Ron Fox, talked about the origin of this idea, and the history of Utah's current flag. To further explore this proposal, Kaye speaks on the purpose of flags, and the importance of an efficient and "easy to identify" flag design.Kaye speaks on the five basic principles of a good flag design, as mentioned in his pamphlet Good Flag Bad Flag. Kaye discusses why some flags score low on the NAVA (North American Vexillological Association) ranking and the reasoning behind the redesigning of so many city and state flags. Kaye believes that a great flag design takes on a timeless quality and is appreciated and embraced by a prospective citizenry. The process for Utah's new flag has been extended for another year, giving all Utahns the opportunity to get involved and to “speak their peace” about this proposal. As of March 2022, over a thousand individuals have "thrown their hat into the ring," offering their own designs regarding a new flag for Utah. Bio: Ted Kaye has consulted on the adoption of new flags at the city, state, and national level. In the past, Kaye has worked as a chief financial officer for the company Wygant and was employed by the Oregon Historical Society. Kaye has edited and translated many journals, newsletters, books, and over 2,000 articles on flags. Kaye has researched and presented papers at national and international flag-studies conferences. Kaye is currently the secretary of the North American Vexillological Association. Once upon a time, late-night talk shows were like boozy dinner parties, fun chat-fests where movie stars would reveal a little too much about themselves. Now, they’re marked by anti-septic games of charades and sing-alongs. Comedian Guy Branum wants to bring anarchy back to late night with Talk Show: The Game Show. “We’ll all watch these people in TV and singing; we know what they’re good at,” says Branum. “A talk show should let you inside of them a bit more.”  Plus, we head back to Vexillological Corner for a discussion of city flags with flag expert Ted Kaye.  Learn more about your ad choices.
