Voice of America news editor and Pittsburgh native Dan Joseph ("Behind the Yoi: The Life of Myron Cope, Legendary Pittsburgh Steelers Broadcaster") joins the podcast this week for a deep dive into the legacy of one of pro football's most unique broadcast voices. Myron Cope (1929-2008) served as the radio color commentator for the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers from 1970 to 2005, becoming an irreplaceable voice in NFL broadcasting. Known for his distinctive, gravelly tone and catchphrases like “Yoi!” and “Okle-dokle,” Cope's excitement and unapologetic support for the Steelers led fans to mute their TVs and tune into his radio broadcasts. His career extended beyond game days, with his pioneering evening talk show dominating Pittsburgh's airwaves for over two decades and earning him the honor of being the first pro football announcer inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame. Born and raised in Pittsburgh to Lithuanian Jewish parents, Cope initially pursued journalism, writing for publications such as Sports Illustrated. But it was through the airwaves that he truly captured fans' hearts. In 1975, Cope created the "Terrible Towel" - a gold towel Steelers fans waved in support of their team - which became a powerful emblem of Steelers Nation. His contributions to the team's lore also include co-naming 1972's “Immaculate Reception,” forever tying him to one of the NFL's most iconic plays. Beyond broadcasting, Cope's legacy reflects his dedication to his family and community. He donated all Terrible Towel royalties to the care facility where his son, born with brain damage, still resides. The Jaguars found out the hard way that the curse of the Terrible Towel is still alive. They won just one of their final six games to miss the playoffs while the Steelers made it over them. 

Hour 1: VICTORY MONDAY. The Steelers are in. They won on Saturday in the slop of Baltimore and the Titans helped out the Steelers with a win over the Jags yesterday afternoon. The guys think this feels different to them – not because they think the Steelers will win the game in Buffalo on Sunday, but because they got there on the back of Mason Rudolph of all people. How much does the TJ Watt loss impact how people feel about what this team can actually do in the playoffs?  The Jaguars found out the hard way that the curse of the Terrible Towel is still alive. (Hour 2 with Cook and Joe) Post Gazette's Ray Fittipaldo joins the show today while the Steelers are doing their walkthrough. Ray is in the camp that Mason Rudolph should start over Kenny Pickett even if he is healthy. George Pickens' performance last week was the 11th best receiving effort of a Steelers wide receiver in their history. Antonio Brown had 3 of the top 10. Ray does not like the Steelers' chances of making the playoffs. He is not worried about the other outside things that could happen. He is thinking about the confidence level of the team going into Seattle and winning, which is what the team has to do to make the playoffs. Seattle is their biggest roadblock to making the playoffs. Ron and Ray talk about TJ Watt and his gambling odds for Defensive Player of the Year. Also a quick look around the league and who will be some of the favorites coming down to the wire in the NFL season.  Today is the Anniversary of the Terrible Towel. Ron thinks it is the most identifiable object associated with any pro sports team. Myron Cope started a legacy that has lasted for a very long time. Listeners call in to tell us their memories about when the Terrible Towel was brought out and how cool it was back then. Today is also the 24th Anniversary when Mario Lemieux came out of retirement. Mario secretly trained to come back. When he did come back he completely dominated, him coming back possibly saved hockey in Pittsburgh.

We hear more stories from listeners about the Terrible Towel and Mario Lemieux's comeback. Listeners also chime in on the Mason Rudolph situation.  The Athletic's Mark Kaboly joins the show to preview the upcoming matchup between the Steelers and the Seahawks. Mark thinks Mason Rudolph has earned another start after his play against the Cincinnati Bengals. Mason only came back to Pittsburgh because the Steelers offered him a guaranteed salary, according to Kaboly. Mark talks about the TJ Watt DPOTY betting odds. Myles Garrett has come up big this year and Mark thinks Garrett will get the award. The Steelers do have a shot at winning, however they never do well in Seattle. Mark says the Seahawks will win 27-24 but the Steelers playoff hopes will remain alive. But even if they win both games, there is still a chance a 10-7 season does not get the Steelers in the playoffs.
