First, Lauren explores the dark and eerie past of the Old Tooele Hospital—also known as Asylum 49. What was once a place of healing is now considered one of the most haunted locations in the state. From ghostly apparitions to aggressive spirits and shadowy figures, this former hospital has a long history of paranormal activity that blurs the line between the living and the dead. Then, Kenzie brings us the third and final installment of her deep dive into the Great Basin Murders. In this episode, we focus on the victims found in Utah—women whose lives were tragically cut short and whose cases remain unsolved. As we trace the patterns, examine the evidence, and consider potential suspects, we're left wondering if these killings are the work of one traveling predator—or something even more unsettling. Hosts: Erin Rider and Guest Host Rachelle Morris Mining and artificial intelligence -- we touched on both of those points last week when we spoke about Utah leaders visiting Canada for a trade mission. Now that everyone's back home in the Beehive State, we wanted to chat about the potential impacts of a closer partnership between Utah and our northerly neighbors in Canada, and what that could mean for the average Utahn. Jonathan Freedman, President and CEO of World Trade Center Utah joins the program to discuss the trip.
Hosts: Erin Rider and Guest Host Rachelle Morris President Trump, El Salvador President say man mistakenly deported won’t be returned "We are complying with all court orders” -- That's what White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said today when asked about the Supreme Court's order for the administration to "facilitate" the return of a Maryland man mistakenly deported to an El Salvadorian prison. It comes as the President of El Salvador says he won’t return the man. The Inside Sources hosts discuss some of the nuances and how folks on both the left and the right say the courts are supporting their views with this case. Deportations of foreign students for their beliefs ramping up While much of the focus on deportations has been on the Maryland man mistakenly deported, there's been another large group of people facing deportation: foreign students attending U.S. universities. Last week, a judge said the government could deport a foreign national because of their beliefs. Now, it looks like that may be happening on a broader level across the country, especially among students holding pro-Palestinian views. Harvard to lose grant funding after standing up to the Trump Administration There's a battle brewing between Harvard University and the Trump Administration over whether the government can tell a private entity what to do or what policies to have. The Trump administration had demanded the university change its policies surrounding DEI and pro-Palestinian movements or lose funding. The university's president basically said to ‘pound sand.’ The Inside Sources hosts share their thoughts on when it’s appropriate for the government to tell a private group what to do. Measuring Pres. Trump’s effectiveness through the number of bills he’s signed We're nearly 100 days into President Trump's second term in the White House. His administration has said it's the most productive presidency in recent memory. But the President's only signed 5 bills so far... a far cry from what he did in his first term. And all of this while pushing out roughly 125 executive orders. It got us thinking -- is there some kind of imbalance here? Inside Sources digs into it. Utah ranks #1 for economic outlook... for the 18th year in a row If you've been listening to Inside Sources for quite some time, you'll recognize that we're pretty proud of our state. Sure, we have issues. But overall, Utah's a pretty darn good place to live. Now for the 18th year in a row, we're topping the charts for economic outlook. Jonathan Williams, President and Chief Economist at ALEC joins Inside Sources to talk about the report he co-authored and how Utah continues to push ahead in these rankings. Takeaways from Utah’s trade mission to Canada Mining and artificial intelligence -- we touched on both of those points last week when we spoke about Utah leaders visiting Canada for a trade mission. Liberal activists Bernie Sanders, AOC receive huge welcome in Utah As Democrats search for the message they hope will win them Congress in the midterms, the more liberal members of the party are going around hoping to get their message out front and center. Over the weekend, Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rallied in Salt Lake City, taking aim at billionaires galore. The Inside Sources hosts give their thoughts on whether this is a potential winning message for Democrats. All-female Blue Origin mission: A win for women or a futile flop? Was it a giant step for womankind? Eh... maybe not. That’s how many women describe yesterday’s all-female crew on a Blue Origin mission to space. Inside Sources host Erin Rider and guest co-host Rachelle Morris finish things off sharing their thoughts on whether this publicity stunt hurts or helps women overall.

Hosts: Taylor Morgan and Adam Gardiner Potential growing for an economic recession this year Even though tariffs on Canada and Mexico have been paused for another month, Republican lawmakers are growing alarmed, saying their constituents are struggling to follow and adapt to the back-and-forth on tariff plans. The stock market has also been in rough territory today after comments the President made over the weekend about a possible recession this year. This all comes while the Commerce Secretary says there's "no chance" of a recession. Senior Economist at Zions Bank Robert Spendlove gives his expert opinion on it all. On the Hill 2025: Passionate testimony supporting coverage for IVF treatment During the final few days of the Legislative Session, the Legislature discussed Senate Bill 242: Public Employee's Benefit and Insurance Program Modifications. The name alone isn't super exciting but the bill, which involves in vitro fertilization treatment, had some passionate testimony on Capitol Hill before it passed. State Rep. Jason Thompson joins the show to discuss his remarks on the bill. On the Hill 2025: What happened on the final day of the session? The 45-day Utah Legislative General Session wrapped up on Friday, passing a total of 582 bills; more than 950 had been introduced. Now, it's up to Governor Spencer Cox to either sign the bills or veto them over the next couple weeks. Inside Sources hosts Adam Gardiner and Taylor Morgan talk about the few ‘bombs’ thrown around in the final hours and days of the session. Yet another government shutdown watch It's like déjà vu... we're on government shutdown watch again. Tomorrow, the House will vote on a Republican-crafted spending bill that would avoid a government shutdown on Friday. It comes as Democrats tell Republicans ‘You're on your own’ and that they won't vote to avoid a shutdown this time around. What’s the latest on the fight to fund the government? Inside Sources breaks it down. Republicans, Democrats push back on Elon Musk Republicans and Democrats are pushing back on Elon Musk. GOP lawmakers say he doesn’t have the authority to fire people; only to make recommendations. Democrats in Wisconsin are beginning their attack ads as well, tying Republican candidates to Musk. Is this going to be a winning message for Democrats leading up to the midterms? Taylor and Adam share their thoughts. ICE arrests Palestinian activist holding green card One of President Trump's many executive orders he's signed so far was one addressing anti-Semitism. It came because of the pro-Palestinian protests that erupted on college campuses nationwide last year. Now, we're seeing the effects of the executive order through the arrest and impending deportation of a green card holder protesting at Columbia University. Utah in winter? Chef's kiss. Whether you're a ski bunny or a movie buff, this is the place to be. Picture this: late January rolls in, and Utah transforms into a winter wonderland. Snowy peaks call out to skiers, while Park City turns into a hub of glitz, glamour, and indie-film magic with the Sundance Film Festival. It's the perfect blend of adrenaline and artsy vibes. This week, Sofia and her mountain-man-extraordinaire and slight-ski-bum brother, Sebastian Blanno, hit the mic to talk about Utah's winter hotspots. Sebbi (our in-house Travel Brat ski king) knows his slopes, and he's here to spill the powdery tea on the best resorts, runs, and eats in the Beehive State. The Best Time to GoSebastian recommends the middle of January to early February. Why? Peak powder and prime Sundance season! Double the fun and twice the glitz, glamour, and magic of Sundance, plus the slopes are pretty empty despite the crowded streets! (P.S. If you're hitting Sundance, pack your boots AND your black-tie looks. You'll thank us later.)Here are Sebbi's Must-Visit Ski Havens in UtahPark City & Park City Mountain ResortThe Stats: Park City Mountain Resort, combined with Canyons Resort, is the largest ski area in the United States, with over 7,300 acres of skiable terrain. But keep in mind, large does NOT mean BEST!The Level: A great beginner, intermediate mountain with many “cruiser blues.” Similar to Vail Resort in Colorado. The Vibes: Once a silver mining town in the 19th century, Park City oozes charm with its historic buildings turned into trendy shops and restaurants. Did we mention you can ski past old mine shafts? Epic. Deer Valley ResortThe Luxe Life Vibe: With ski valets, snacks in the lift lines, gourmet on-mountain dining, and unparalleled service, Deer Valley Resort is consistently ranked as one of the most luxurious ski resorts in North America. You can even get a view of some mega-mansions on your way down the slopes! This is boujee skiing at its finest; perfect for our die-hard Travel Brats! Level & Terrain: Similar to Steamboat in Colorado, with great tree-skiing and many blue and black groomers. Also, no snowboarders allowed! Traditional skiing reigns supreme here.Little Cottonwood Canyon - The Iconic American Resorts of Snowbird & AltaSnowbird: A Travel Brat personal favorite, Snowbird is known for its long ski season, which can stretch to July 4th, and has very advanced terrain. Snowbird is also home to the famous Tram, which offers breathtaking views of the Wasatch Range as it climbs over 2,900 vertical feet. If you ski down into the mineral basin from here and then take one more lift, you can enter into Alta. Snowbird is similar to the Colorado resorts, Silverton or Aspen Highlands.Alta: A legendary U.S. Ski resort. Like Deer Valley, a snowboard-free paradise where traditional skiing reigns supreme. You can also ski back to Snowboird from Alta via the Tram or tunnel. Both Snowbird and Alta receive very similar snow accumulation, with Snowbird receiving about 600 inches in one season! Great for POWPOW skiing!Big Cottonwood Canyon - Solitude & Brighton:Solitude and Brighton are a snowboarder's dream. Lifts are spaced out, and the slopes have large open glades. These are your go-to spots for those craving quieter, more rugged vibes and killer backcountry terrain. Big Cottonwood also gets fantastic powder. Lifts are spaced out, and the slopes have large open glades. Similar to Colorado's Keystone (on the easy end) and Arapahoe Basin (on the difficult end), Solitude and Brighton are known as “social” mountains that the locals love.Favorite RunsSebastian's picks for thrilling runs? Snowbird's double black diamond run, “Lower Organ Grinder.” Hit Park City's “Quittin' Time” run for those postcard-perfect views and Snowbird's “Cirque Traverse” for heart-pounding challenges. Aprés Ski EatsPost-skiing, Sebbi raves about the Handle in Park City for its creative small plates and The Iconic Ruth Chris Steakhouse for a splurge-worthy feast. Try the venison! A favorite Park City Bar is “the Pig Pen Saloon” where you can get a $1 T-shirt with the purchase of a shot.Fun Utah Trivia: True or False?Utah's snow is called "The Greatest Snow on Earth" because it's super light and fluffy.True. The dry climate = primo powder.Sundance started in 1968, thanks to Robert Redford.False. It kicked off in 1978 as a small showcase for American films.Spielberg, Lucas, and Kubrick debuted films at Sundance.False. Legends like Tarantino and the Coen Brothers owe their big breaks to Sundance. It's illegal to throw snowballs in Utah without consent.True. Yep, Utah takes snowball fights seriously. Be sure to get consent before engaging in a snowball fight!“Stuff” You Should KnowSnow in Utah is not as dry as it is in Colorado, however, the temperatures don't feel as chilly. All resorts (with no traffic) are between a 20-35 minute drive. In addition, the Salt Lake City Airport is only 20 minutes from Park City. What to PackLayers, people! Layer using a GORE-TEX or other water-repellent gear to combat Utah's humidity. You'll need cozy après-ski sweaters, and something chic for Sundance. Bonus: pack sunscreen—mountain sunburn is real. Budget BreakWith the base regular Ikon Base pass, you can enjoy 5 days at Brighton, Snowbird, and Solitude. With the upgraded Ikon pass, you can enjoy 5 days at Deer Valley as well. This costs about $1,200. To ski Park City, you need to buy an Epic Pass. You can purchase a 3-day Epic pass for $320. Keep in mind, this $1,500+ splurge includes, not just Utah Skiing, but most other resorts for your entire ski season. Visit the Ikon and Epic websites for more info on resort options and perks. If you are driving from another western state you will end up spending roughly $200 on gas, if you share a hotel with 3 to 4 friends you will end up spending about $600 per person for 3-5 days, and if you are a foodie and a drink lover, budget about $2,000 per person. If you like memorable merch, set aside $100 for a souvenir or two. Most Memorable Moment: Sebbi's Solo Tram Run Sebbi's most memorable Travel Story was his last run at Snowbird down the “Great Scott” run right below the Tram. He blasted to the bottom and stared back at the mountain in awe at his entire experience. Catching him staring back at the Mountain, his Buddy said “You like Snowbird Bass?” and he said, “Oh Yeeeeeea.” Snowbird will always hold a place in Sebastian's heart as one of his favorite resorts. Why Visit Utah? Here's Seb's elevator pitch: Thick. Powder. Culture. Adventure. Whack. Extra. Different. Unforgettable. Whether you're carving through fresh POPOW or catching a future Oscar-winner at Sundance, Utah is the winter escape you didn't know you needed.Catch ya on the slopes, Travel Brats! And don't forget to tag us when you're shredding those Utah slopes or striking a pose at Sundance.

Could ranked-choice voting be on its way out the door? The KSL at Night hosts give their ideas on how this decision in Idaho could affect how we vote in Utah. Final post-election thoughts from the KSL at Night hosts The Democratic Party saw many losses yesterday in the election. Could it be that the party has focused too much on hating Donald Trump and not enough on actual policies that would help Americans? Or was last night just a weird fluke? Taylor Morgan and Rusty Cannon end the show with their final thoughts on yesterday’s election. They also discuss the potential make-up of the 2028 presidential election.
Hosts: Taylor Morgan & Rusty Cannon Here at home, how did the elections play out? We shift gears and discuss the status of races here in the Beehive State, both with candidates and issues. Hosts: Maura Carabello & Taylor Morgan Appeals court rules on mail-in ballot ‘grace period’More than 20 states around the country accept mail-in ballots after Election Day, so long as it was postmarked before on or Election Day. The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals recently ruled that the ‘grace period’ shouldn’t be allowed, siding with the Republican Party, which brought forth the earlier suit. What could this ruling mean for voters in Utah – if anything at all? The KSL at Night hosts break it down. Major newspapers withhold presidential endorsementsThe Washington Post and Los Angeles Times have both decided to withhold endorsing any presidential candidate this election cycle. It goes against what they’ve done for many, many previous presidential races. The reasons for the lack of endorsement varies between the two publications, but the effect and outrage from many is the same. Does it actually matter for media organizations to endorse a candidate? Are conspiracy theories affecting voter turnout in Salt Lake County? There’s been a resurgence in conspiracy theories around the election this year, especially as it relates to mail-in voting and voting machines. The bogus accusations are leading to harassment against election officials and workers, plus it’s affecting rates of early voting. How could these conspiracy theories be affecting early voter turnout? How about here in Salt Lake County? The KSL at Night hosts discuss. Examining the role of money in local campaigns: Do ‘deep pockets’ still matter? We all know that national elections require a lot of money in order to have a chance at success. But what about on a smaller scale in local elections? Do ‘deep pockets’ matter in those smaller races? KSL at Night hosts Maura Carabello and Taylor Morgan share their thoughts – using their years of experience – and draw a line between races that need lots of money and those that don’t. Utah County Proposition 11: An opposer’s view of dissolving Alpine School DistrictProposition 11 is on the ballot in Utah County right now; it would create a new school district for the cities of Alpine, American Fork, Cedar Hills, Highland, Lehi, and parts of Draper. In this particularly special episode Mike makes his way back to the Beehive State and to The Nerd Store in Valley Fair Mall. He got the chance to interview Roger, who along with his brother Charles, is an owner and operator. Roger has one of the most interesting and inspiring stories Mike has heard so far. This is a story of two brothers scraping and clawing their way to success, including surviving on one cup of noodles a day and sleeping in the back of the store. Now, if you thought that alone was reason this was a special episode, you'll be happy to hear the rest of the story. As returning listeners know, the basic script is an interview with a comic shop owner or manager, then a review of the book they recommend. Here is the curve ball: both Roger, the co-owner, and another friend of mine from the area, Andrew, are friends with the author of the book being covered this episode, Plastic. And that is Mr. Doug Wagner. Introductions were made and the next thing you know, Mike was interviewing Doug. He is an absolute gentleman and a joy to interview, not to mention, as his series Plastic shows, a supremely imaginative and talented writer. So strap in and prepare to enjoy this episode! Find The Nerd Store on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Nerdstoreut/?locale=en_GB. Find the extraordinary author of Plastic, Doug Wagner, on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Doug.Wagner13, Instagram https://www.instagram.com/Doug.Wagner13/, and X @Doug_Wagner. And above all, track down and buy the sequel to Plastic, Plastic: Death and Dolls, out now at your favorite comic shop...or online...bottom line...it's a must buy! Thanks to both Roger and Doug for these interviews. They were two of the most fun interviews Mike's had!

Jeff McCullough took a trip to Utah in 2020, and it changed his life. No, the evangelical pastor didn't convert to the state's predominant religion, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and he didn't launch a virulent campaign to explore what some have seen as Mormonism's heresies. Instead, he felt a divine call to launch a YouTube channel, titled Hello Saints, to, as he put it, “fight criticism with curiosity.” “Most of my Christian friends didn't say very nice things about the people from the LDS Church,” McCullough says in his introduction, “and I don't really like that.” So the 43-year-old Hope Chapel minister from the Bible Belt, who calls himself a “recovering Mormon basher,” set about exploring the beliefs and practices of the Utah-based faith, eager to build bridges between that church and evangelical Christians. McCullough now lives in the Beehive State and has produced more than 90 short videos comparing and contrasting “the lifestyle, culture and beliefs of Mormons and mainstream Christianity,” including questions like these: Are Mormons Christians? What do Christians and Latter-day Saints agree and disagree about? On his journey to familiarize himself and his audience with this unfamiliar faith, he has viewed General Conference, attended Sunday services, read the Book of Mormon and toured a Latter-day Saint temple. His Hello Saints channel, which operates as a nonprofit, has 60,000 subscribers and nearly 7 million views. He is currently hosting a virtual summit with interviews and presentations by Latter-day Saints and evangelicals on topics ranging from Jesus and marriage to politics and heaven. On this week's show, McCullough discusses his online efforts, his approach and what he hopes to accomplish.
