BIO: Shil Shanghavi is a public speaking specialist, storyteller, and highly regarded speaker coach. He is redefining the meaning of public speaking by demonstrating its value across all forms of communication.STORY: Shil's worst investment was paying for ecstasy for over 15 years. However, this also turned out to be his best investment because he discovered house music while high on drugs. He learned to speak to music to control his stuttering and talk fluently.LEARNING: Find a way to flip your challenges into your success story. Reach out to people around you when you need help. Write your thoughts down but don't feel compelled to action them immediately. “Find your elite, and don't let it scare you.”Shil Shanghavi Guest profileShil Shanghavi is a public speaking specialist, storyteller, and highly regarded speaker coach. He is redefining the meaning of public speaking by demonstrating its value across all forms of communication.Shil is the Head of Speaker Coaching for TEDxPerth, a Board member of Guerrilla Establishment, and a presentation mentor with Impact100 WA. He is a pioneer in his field, having introduced the concept of public speaking in virtual reality and artificial intelligence—two groundbreaking approaches which are disrupting the speaking game.In 2021, an award-winning short film documentary of Shil's life story was released globally. The documentary is an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at Shil's story, documenting his public speaking journey.Worst investment everShil was born with a stutter which got worse as his life progressed. All through school and around other kids, Shil got teased, ridiculed, bullied, ignored, and dismissed because he couldn't talk properly. That continued when Shil moved to Australia. The horrible treatment made his stuttering even worse. It continued through to university. In university, Shil was around people older than him studying subjects he'd never come across. And because of that, Shil thought they were more intelligent, educated, and better than him. His stuttering made people distrust him and think of him as incompetent. So Shil was always excluded from assignments, team meetings, and discussions. He never felt like he belonged or had a place in the world. One day, Shil was invited to a party. During the party, he was standing around a group of people, and one of the guys in this group offered Shil a little blue pill. He didn't know what it was at first. The whole group turned to look at Shil, and they all urged him to take this pill, and that's when it struck him that this was some drug. He'd never taken drugs before but wanted to fit in, be liked, and belong. So Shil took the pill. The following eight hours were phenomenal. It was one of the most incredible things he'd ever felt. Everybody was his friend. Nobody laughed at him when he stuttered; they instead laughed with him, which felt really good. From that moment, Shil got hooked on drugs and ecstasy because of that feeling of acceptance. The drug addiction continued for more than 15 years. This addiction made Shil fall in love with progressive dance and house music. He would sit on his couch, a buddy's couch, or at a party for hours and hours, immersed in the high while listening to house music. He did it repeatedly, for hours. As Shil was listening to house music, he started speaking to himself. The more he listened to the music, the more he started correlating...

Season 2 - Episode 3: Saving the Martuwarra-Fitzroy river with Professor Anne Poelina

Post-Growth Australia Podcast

Martuwarra, the Fitzroy River, is located in the Kimberley region of northern Western Australia – renowned and cherished for being one of the last of the world’s isolated, vast and by global standards – relatively untouched by Western development. Of course, like all places that haven’t yet been concreted over by a dominant culture that demands to grow infinitely on a finite planet, Martuwarra, the Fitzroy River, is under threat to be next on the chopping block. But not without a fight! PGAP talks to Professor Anne Poelina, Chair of the Martuwarra Fitzroy River Council and a Nyikina Warrwa Traditional Owner, is a custodian of her family’s connection to Mardoowarra, at the lower end of the Fitzroy River. Through observation and practice of Indigenous ‘First Law’ - the first Australian law embodied the rules for living in coexistence with nature – Anne believes it is possible to transition from a culture of invasive development and exploitation to an entrepreneurial culture of care and custodianship. Thirteen years ago, our then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said ‘Sorry’ on behalf of the nation to Australia’s Indigenous people. Since then, you could be forgiven for thinking whether any of this apology has sunk in with the various mining, road construction and other ‘business as usual’ industries that continue to plunder sacred lands that were never ceded. In Western Australia, Rio-Tinto blasted the Juukan Gorge caves – 46 000 years of human cultural significance gone in an instant with the help of some explosives. As I was recording this episode, I learnt that Mining giant BHP have recklessly harmed a Banjima sacred site in the Pilbara region in the same state. And don’t think this is a peculiarly Western Australia phenomena - I’ve just today passed Ararat in Victoria, near the sacred Djap Warrung birthing trees are under relentless threat by the state government to be removed in order to widen a road. This absurdity is straight out of the plot-line of a Douglas Adams novel. In the eyes of the dominant neo-liberal culture, nothing is sacred from mining, fracking, road-widening, grazing, water theft – general exploitation. How could it be when Growth on a finite planet is the modus operandi and any other way of being or relating to the land is seen as anti-development, anti-progress, radical and dangerous? Hence – the ongoing and relentless displacement of First Nations people, culture and land, whether we are talking Brazil, West Papua, West China or, indeed, Western Australia. I personally feel that the conversations around Post-Growth, Degrowth and even national population and migration policy are lacking First Nations’ perspectives, both in public discourse and in the literature. However, if you scratch under the surface, I believe there are voices to be heard on these issues. A couple of years ago, I ran a seminar at the Sustainable Living Festival for Sustainable Population Australia (https://population.org.au) with Richie Allen, director of ‘Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation’, titled “Population: Indigenous and Environmental Perspectives”. Richie’s mother Violet ran for the Sustainable Australia Party in the ACT state elections, and it was through SAP connections that Prof. Anne Poelina and I met. It is also interesting that Lowitja O'Donoghue (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lowitja_O%27Donoghue) was once a trustee with SPA. And so, Prof. Poelina and I happen to be united in our position to population and migration policy. I am sure that there is no united ‘First Nation’ perspective on population policy and I could bet that opinions on this topic are as diverse as the 360 language groups that comprised the original custodians of this continent pre-colonization. Yet if we are to ‘de-grow’ and ‘decolonise’, then taking time to listen to Indigenous wisdom, including love, respect and connection to land and water, is absolutely crucial. During the interview, Anne shares with us some insight into Indigenous ‘First Law’ as a way out of the anthropocentric, growthist quagmire we find ourselves in; towards a future of sustainability, stewardship and reconnection with each other, the land, water and life. Following my interview with Anne, I play an excerpt of the musical tour-de-force which is "Yimardoowarra" from Nyikina Warrwa artist "Kalaji". Yimardoowarra means belonging to Martuwarra, the Fitzroy River - such a perfect soundtrack for this episode! You can listen to the entirety of the track on "Kalaji"s artist page here. For Life on Purpose Episode #14, my guest is social change activist, writer, blogger, and photographer Sash Milne, who joins me to discuss the Nothing New Project (no new things bought for a year), her TEDxPerth talk about the project, and what she calls the Economy of Human Connection. About: Sash Milne is a social change activist, writer, blogger, photographer and all 'round hunter of the good life. In her early 20s she decided that a life lived inside the box was not one she wanted to live. She ran away from her mainstream life in search of something simpler. She lived in a very remote village in Indonesia for three years, where she learned some fundamental lessons about community, connectedness and most importantly, happiness. While living with nothing but the basics , she completed her Masters in Social Change and transformed the course of her life, for good. Sash then returned to Australia as the single mum of one, with a need to incorporate her passion for community, simplicity and sustainability into a life lived down under. She continually challenges social norms and consumer trends by creatively connecting with other people. She launched her Nothing New project at the beginning of 2014 and soon discovered that buying nothing new is perhaps the best way of gaining everything that really matters. To learn more about Sash's work, visit: http://www.inkedincolour.com or http://www.inkedincolour.com/category/nothing-new/.
