Welcome to another captivating episode of The Coaching Podcast, where we delve into the world of transformative coaching, speaking, and self-discovery. In this episode, we unravel the art of coaching by exploring fundamental principles such as First Principles and understanding second-order consequences. Our guest, Jon Yeo, a speaking consultant, and licensee of TEDxMelbourne, shares his profound insights on coaching excellence, emphasizing the importance of deep connection, consistent methodology, and empathetic understanding. We journey through the intricacies of effective communication, guided by Jon's expertise in crafting TEDx talks that truly resonate. From exploring inner motivations to creating memorable speaking experiences, we explore the strategies that drive meaningful change. Join us as we navigate through the realms of coaching, speaking, and self-mastery, uncovering the secrets to influence, engagement, and the joy of transformative growth. Some of the highlights include; 1.29: Worst coaching moments: When a coach assumes they know more than they do. Assumptions are your biggest killer. 2.03: Best coaching moments: When the coach deeply understands the needs, values, and outcomes of that person. Are you even more committed than the coachee? How can a coach best prepare to be the moment? Do your homework! Meet them where they are at, based on their background and experience. Once you have arguably five times more information than you need, look for patterns. Look for 'First Principles' - what are the prime elements that if you removed them, actually stopped that thing from being? (Car analogy) This helps the coach and their client re-engineer their road map. 5.35: Do you have a practice of excellence that extends well before you even get there? It's more than just creating the time to prepare! 6.07: Sliding Doors: "I love what you do, and, do what I love." But that wasn't always the case for Jon. Moving to London transformed the way he thinks and the way he operates. 9.19: What Makes a Great Coach? Observant - how is your attention to detail around every micro-facet of their thinking, doing, action, practice, and being? Can you spot a pattern or schism (a split or division between strongly opposed sections or parties, caused by differences in opinion or belief)? Do you have a consistent methodology? Without a baseline, you can't measure improvement or direction. Open - Be honest that one day you might be wrong, or that you don't have all of the answers or you don't have the clarity that you really should have. If you are not open and vulnerable to this fact that you will never learn, grow, and evolve. How can you shift from a "know-it-all to a learn-it-all?" Empathetic - are you putting yourself in your coachee's shoes? 12.31: What drives someone to do something? (the human psyche) Inner exploration - How do you think, act, and operate? Who are you? Because everything you do is an expression of those elements. 14.12: What causes someone to pause, rewind, or abandon a TEDx talk? Pause and rewind: For reflection purposes Abandon: 1) The speaker is not interesting 2) The idea is too complicated 3) Or it wasn't the idea they expected Therefore, knowing why people engage and why people disengage will come down to your ability to say the right thing, at the right time, to the right person, and in the right way = the craft of speaking. 15.38: You need basic rules to follow for a successful talk (it's an art and science). TEDx talk TIPS and considerations: Most people take about 8 drafts before they are even more comfortable sharing their message with the world. Remember that before you get this draft it probably won't feel good, and/or sound great but that's okay and it is a part of the process. Most people 'stop here' but keep defining and refining because that's the fun and compulsory part. A typical draft will take half a day to a week (Chat GPT can speed up this process). Prioritizing the importance will help you determine the amount of time you need to prepare. Memorize the key bullet points (25 times to know the content) and note that it will take you 50 times of practice before you will be able to deliver a LIVED EXPERIENCE. Can you deliver your talk without thinking about it? Remember that "hope is not a strategy when you are trying to influence someone," 98% of the time, speakers have anywhere between 60 - 90% too much content. What do you want people to THINK, FEEL, and DO after listening to your talk? A TEDx talk is - Ideas worth spreading, they are not lectures worth learning. When we are speaking, it is actually an opportunity to engage, build rapport, and establish and build a relationship. Otherwise, you are just transferring information and you would be missing the point of the purpose of speaking. 20.46: What are second-order consequences? (The consequence of the consequence. 24.29: How can we make STEM more appealing to girls at a younger age? Follow: Sarah Moran is co-founder of Girl Geek Academy, a movement to bring one million women and girls into technology careers by 2030. Book: Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez (Data bias in a world designed for men). Men need to be honest that they are successful because the world is built for them. 28.58: TED talk recommendations: Mastery talks because of their simplicity and profoundness: 1) Weird or Just Different by Derek Sivers 2) How to Tie Your Shoes by Terry Moore Great speakers are able to create this two-way dynamic When we are more symbiotic the joy of life seems to show itself and the struggle disappears. About 15% of employees worldwide are fully engaged, with differences in engagement seen across regions like Europe, South Asia, the US, and Canada.Generational Impact: Generational differences influence work attitudes. Older generations valued duty, while younger ones prioritize personal fulfillment. Many leaders promoted for skills lack vital leadership abilities needed for effective team engagement.ABC of Engagement: Autonomy, Belonging, and Competencies drive engagement. Leaders should offer decision-making autonomy, create belongingness, and foster skill development.Non-Negotiable Values: Organizations need core values that guide purpose. Hiring should align with these values, promoting belongingness and engagement.Leaders' Vital Role: Effective leadership involves understanding each team member's strengths, nurturing development, aligning personal and organizational purposes, and ensuring open communication.Personalized Conversations: Engaging conversations with both high and underperforming employees offer insights for better team dynamics and performance. Informal settings encourage candid exchanges.Effective Communication: Open and active communication builds trust. Relaxed settings like walking meetings enable honest discussions.Recognition and Feedback: Recognizing achievements and offering feedback drive engagement. Positive feedback sessions focusing on strengths encourage growth ownership.Top 3 Takeaways: Stop talking about human resources. Nowadays we talk about human beings. Change negative issues into a positive approach.Take your position as a leader seriously because you're there to support and facilitate employees. The Expert Podcast takes a different tangent this week with Carmen and Nic doing a preview of the Professional Speakers Australia Convention 2023 in Melbourne. When they were talking Carms was about to head over to deliver her workshop there was a chance to preview the line-up, the expectations of the event but also a chance to explore the opportunity for experts and business owners to get more involved with speaking. The speaking industry took a massive hit with the pandemic taking its toll on people coming together and there was a shift from in-person events to putting everything online. Now we are back delivering to people and not screens Carmen is reminding speakers that there is a revenue stream still to be taken of advantage of with online. You need to be very good at it though because the expectations are high online and there is no room for mediocrity. One of the directions that a vast majority of media experts are looking to do is getting on the speaking circuit. On the other hand there is a lot of professional speakers that are looking to get in the media. Speakers and Experts are very much aligned with their goals in that they are required to be present and ready to take up an opportunity and the stage and media is highly valued. Being able to communicate in front of a camera is a talent that for many experts' kind of try and in most cases will run away from the opportunity because we don't feel we are good enough. We need to work on this skill because while Covid required us to do this we will need to be doing more of it in the future. Not just for the sake of working with media or delivering speaking opportunities but also for our own marketing and building of audience. It's an essential form of communication that we all need to master from the CEO down.
Our guest is one that many leaders listen to when it comes to communicating and engaging the media. One of her other roles in this remarkably busy year of 2022 is that she happens to be the President of the Professional Speakers of Australia. A former journalist, an academic, and media trainer that engages all forms of corporates, individuals, and organisations across Australia. We have a bona fide media expert on the podcast here today. Dr Neryl East is a credibility authority, an executive coach and global speaker that has had an enormous year with the speaking and coaching industry returning to in person events. One of the most experienced communicators in the country Neryl shares here expertise with us on what the media landscape is looking like, what it takes to engage media and what leaders need to take on as skills to increase their value in credibility, trust, and believability. Some key characteristics that we need as leaders to possesses in communicating is warmth, authenticity, real, human connection, charisma, believability, relatability, and empathy. The days of the spin and the BS are gone and that is what media training used to be all about but that does not sit with the public anymore and this was only expediated during the pandemic. Be a better person is the call from Carmen and something that Neryl is a big believer in with her training. Be fully present, manage your personal feelings, get in the moment, and make it your own is the advice from this communications professional. One of the other hats Neryl wears is the PSA President and we get to hear about Convention in March 2023. Amazing line-up and a big invitation to aspiring speakers to get along to with the generosity and wealth of knowledge of the contributors with the theme of Fresh. For over 25 years, he has been working with passionate yet frustrated business people to transform the way they grow their organizations. Please join me in welcoming...Russell Pearson. Introducing Russell Pearson What problem do you solve? He helps close the gap between marketing and sales, and he also helps you decide what you want from life. What three problems do you solve? How do I actually make connections to my ideal clients? What sort of business can I have? At the end of the day, what do I need to do to get it? Show Notes: Referrals are someone else making a decision about who you work with. Understand who you want to work with. You don't have to pretend to be someone else, just be more you. There are two sides to the coin: Yes, you need to understand who you are to attract the right people. You also need to be disciplined enough to do things that need consistency. You need to be connecting with people on a weekly (if not daily) basis. You won't have opportunities if you're not connecting. What's the process for connection? You want your clients to know, like, and trust you. People do enjoy content creation, but they often do it to avoid connection. Branding is taking yourself and your business to make something completely unique and exciting. People will experience the way you solve things in a way they haven't before. Ask people if they want help. If you don't ask, you don't get it. Can you use a social media platform to reach more of your audience? Have communication with people who you will love to work with and people who will love to work with you. Russell says it was important when he learned to say yes to things, and by saying yes to things, he found himself in situations where he could step up and step in. To stay relevant, you should be in constant communication with your clients (both past, present, and future). Russell Pearson's Recharge Round What habit do you think has led to success in your life? Russell always says yes to opportunities, and when he has too many opportunities, he gets clear about what he wants. If you had one do-over, what would it be? He would realize sooner that he can actually have anything he wants and that he doesn't have to give something up to get it. In this special edition of Manage Self, Lead Others we bring you a bonus - a conversation with one of the giants of management thinking, Charles Handy from Aidan McCullen's Innovation Show podcast, episode #196, Aidan was fortunate to spend an evening with Charles Handy at his home in London. So many gems in this conversation - don't make a category error of turning efficiency into purpose, curiosity as the start of creativity and the difference between Managers (in charge of things) and Leaders (in charge of people) - intermixed with stories e.g. the road to Davy's Bar and why read Antigone by Sophocles. Janet M. Harvey, author of Invite Change: Lessons from 2020, The Year of No Return, is CEO of inviteCHANGE, a coaching organization that shapes a world where people love their life's work. An early adopter for creating a coach-centered workplace, Janet has trained and coached leaders at Fortune 500 companies, across 6 continents, for more than 25 years. TALKING POINTS The Gallup data released July 2021 of this year shows that only 36% or employees are actively engaged in organizations in the US and 20% globally. If 36% of employees are actively engaged, then it means 64% are not actively engaged. That's an underperforming organization, let alone what says about the poor employee experience that managers are allowing to happen. And there are 2 categories in the ‘not actively engaged' – those who are going through the motions, which means the organization is not getting their discretionary energy. They have it, but they're not using it at work. And the number of actively disengaged means they're toxic in the workforce. There they are in a bad mood. They are judgmental. They're disruptive and they're actively looking for another job! The blame game of the rear-view mirror. What parts of your life story contradict belief in your essence and blocks the vitality and actions that maximize potential. Rowdy has created and led great companies. Author of ‘Leadability: How great leaders are made', and with a Masters Degree in Business Administration and a graduate of the Disney Institute, plus a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management, Rowdy motivates, inspires and agitates individuals, teams and organisations to play a bigger game. TALKING POINTS [15:22 - 15:53] I climbed Mt Kilimanjaro for my 50th birthday, which was an incredible experience. When I got back I wrote the book because I was so impressed with the leadership skills of the Tanzanian guide who took us to the top of the mountain. The book is 30 tips on how to be a great leader, plus the story of the guide who took me up Kilimanjaro. [21:45 - 22:29] There's a shift from command and control style of leadership to collaborative leadership and then transformative leadership. And now it's really the humanizing of leadership, the ability to really understand and care and acknowledge people and their efforts and input. There's a global desire for talent right now and if you don't genuinely care for the person already in your business, it's likely they're off somewhere else. [23:04 - 23:14] In the companies I work with, it's actually middle leadership who need the most work. ABOUT ROWDY MCLEAN Voted recently as one of Australia's top 3 Speakers, Rowdy McLean is a motivated, down-to-earth, practical leader and business expert. He walks his talk. Michelle Bowden explains her ground-breaking persuasion model to understand persuasion and influence and identify what type of influencer you are. TALKING POINTS ✅ [2:32 - 2:55] I am fascinated by persuasive presenting in business, rather than just how to stand and gesture, how to breathe properly and how to use your voice. How do we go to a meeting and say whatever we've got to say and get people in the meeting to do something different, that we want them to do? ✅ [26:06 - 26:17] The law of requisite variety states that the person who can demonstrate the most flexibility in the communication moment is the person who holds the power. ✅ [28:18 - 28:30] There are three phases to a good presentation - analysis, design, then delivery. Analysis is where you work out, what do I want to achieve? ✅ [29:14 - 29:32] My model is called the Persuasion Blueprint. Linguistic patterns are the way you combine your words in your sentences. When you use these linguistic patterns cleverly, it makes you persuasive. This week's conversation is with Irish author and podcaster, Aidan McCullen. His ground-breaking book, 'Undisruptable' features a chapter on the S-Curve model of innovation and change. TALKING POINTS [0:58 - 1:06] Aidan McCullen is host of The Innovation Show podcast and exemplifies the permanent reinvention mindset. [1:33 - 1:44] I discovered one of the root causes of employee demotivation in my business was not looking after the S-Curve, just assuming if I pay them to do a job, they should just do it. Mistake! [2:01 - 2:44] S-Curves were made popular in the 1960s by Everett Rogers in his book, 'The diffusion of innovations'. Picture in your mind the shape of an S. It's used to map any product lifecycle or learning curve or the arc of life itself. [3:17 - 3:31] Until I read your book, 'Undisruptable', I thought the S-Curve was just growth, scale, and maturity. But you make the distinction there's six phases. So tell us about the first phase please Aidan. ABOUT AIDAN MCCULLEN Aidan McCullen is a transformational consultant and Adjunct Professor at Trinity College Dublin where he runs a module called Emerging Trends and Technologies. [6:43] What did you figure out was the reason they let you go? [7:41 - 7:47] I was not used to leading a team. I was not used to the politics of an organization. [8:16 - 8:24] There was definitely friction as I moved towards my mission, which was the opposite of what they wanted to do. [12:11 - 12:26] Leadership is the ability to build relationships to achieve our goals together with compassion, accountability. [12:56 - 13:01] Leadership is putting relationships first. Most people think it's intelligent to put results first. [13:56 - 13:58] How did your leadership evolve? [14:05 - 14:12] I was out of my depth for a time and had to adjust constantly. But then you adapt, that's the first part of it. And then the second part is intention to get better. [14:51 - 15:04] Unless you have the core intention to be a learner, to increase your skill base, then your chances of doing it coincidentally are small. [2:03 - 2:08] What did you learn about the customer experience at Walt Disney world? [2:15 - 2:24] The Disney company can take any mundane, boring thing and turn it into an experience. [2:58] I call it Disneyfication - creating experiences out of the mundane e.g. answer the phone, send an email, send a package. Why don't you make an experience out of them? [4:15 - 4:31] We come up with a service map; every interaction with a client or patient. Whether it's marketing at the front desk, a telephone call, etc, every single point is mapped out. [16:56] Walt Disney himself called it 'Plus It', which is constant process improvement. [23:57] If a doctor's front desk person anticipates the doctor is running late, they can provide anticipatory service. When the patient checks in they just say, "Hey we're really sorry. The doctor's running about 10 minutes behind. Let us buy you a cup of coffee" and hand them a $5 gift card for a coffee. [1:26 - 1:36] A small percentage of leaders and organizations see this time as a time to innovate and change. [1:40 - 1:50] An even smaller percentage recognize they will have to put in an effort to reconstruct the social and emotional health of the team after everything we've been through. [2:06 - 2:27] There's been an emphasis on business continuity and it's working. People put their head down and really worked hard and sustained stress for a long period of time. [3:34 - 3:46] People are quite heroic in crisis. It is after the crisis when things unravel, and that's what we're seeing now. [10:18 - 10:22] People want to be intentional about how they design their lives. [10:44 - 11:07] Some organizations will do well by this because they're dialed in. They connect on a personal level. [11:45 - 12:09] I had a conversation with a CEO who said as soon as COVID is over, they will mandate everybody come back. I said, 'Did you hear that? That's the sound of your competition doing a triple somersault off their desk because they're going to be interested in your best employees!' [14:46 - 14:52] Architecture firms are redesigning office space to foster innovation, creativity, connection. [18:04 - 18:30] We spend billions on training and it is largely ineffective. It does not stick. Ask people what they remember about a program they liked a week later. and they will not be able to tell you specific things about it. And yet we keep throwing money at that process. We could do better. [19:34 - 19:41] Coaching and spacing that experience over time and creating accountability where people are taking actions, you'd see real change. [20:09 - 20:11] That's when we started to create microlearning. [20:32 - 20:37] Stories, people remember. You use stories to illustrate a point. [2:11] Unless the people are on board, your change initiative might fall over. Is that right? [2:33] To ensure that the business benefits are achieved, the way they were intended, if you're not putting people as part of your risk matrix and your risk considerations, then you can be blindsided by the reaction people will have to whatever this great solution is, particularly if they have not been brought along on the journey. If people were the last to find out that the project was even supposed to do that. So then the buy-in's not congruent to the delivery of on time and on budget. [3:15] Risk matrix. Can you explain what that is please John? [4:10] Are people likely to adopt what we're doing? [9:14] Thinking about mindset, could it be that some individual contributors, managers, senior leaders express frustration with, ‘Oh, not another change. Oh, when's it going to stop?' Should we be cultivating a mindset where you go, ‘Oh, yet another change. Let's be agile. Let's be flexible. Just take it on board? I think one of the biggest things about self-leadership is that if we want to be effective in what we do, then it starts from within and so any effort that it takes to improve who we are, and how we show up in the world, is going to have that ripple effect out to our people, our business, our organization I would say to any leader, start with listening, because just that one act is going to show that you care, and that you value what your people have to say and therefore, people will then step in and feel engaged, and then that has that ripple trigger effect, to helping them realize how important they are in the whole scheme of things and then pay attention to their own behavior. 1:44 Ethics is, I think, incredibly important and you've got to understand where you stand5:21 I would say to any leader, start with listening, because just that one act is going to show that you care, and that you value what your people have to say.9:51 I see a direct line with the quality of your self-leadership and the ability to make decisions, even when they're hard decisions, or even when they're just business as usual decisions12:11 To me managing up and self-leadership are two very different things16:19 I think first and foremost is starting with your values19:55 I'd say my three values are professionalism, lifelong learning and funFREE GIVEWAY : The Self-Leadership whitepaper - https://bit.ly/SelfLead_wp Sally Foley-Lewis helps managers be high performing, purposeful and productive. What mistakes do companies make when pricing their product or service? So many companies are leaving money on the table. A small price increase can generate a significant change in profitability. How can a company follow price optimization for competitive advantage and increased profitability? Mistake: Companies often incentivize their salespeople on revenue generated, rather than on profits. Mistake: Many companies fear the uproar of a price change and hold prices at the same level for too long, ignoring changes in costs, competitive environment and customer preferences. Keeping customers informed of price changes can, in reality, be a component of good customer service. Tell us about Predictive Sales Analysis. If you have ever worked in the office environment then you must have heard someone saying, "Well, this is the way we do things around here." There are so many things people do that are not necessarily part of the rule book. And yet, what you do, how you do can impact the culture you want to build. These undocumented ways of doing things in a team environment are unwritten ground rules. And they do have a significant impact on the so-called documented cultural rule book. Whether your goal is to improve communication, foster innovation, or drive change in your team, you cannot not pay attention to UGRs. So in this episode, we will talk about unwritten ground rules and for that, I have Steve Simpson from Melbourne, Australia on the show.In this episode, we talk about:The UGRs conceptIf they are unwritten, then how would you know they exist and influence them? How do they tie with the culture of your team and organization? Can people coming from different backgrounds influence UGRs? How?How can you change the common language and nudge it to the positive side?Shift in UGRs (if any) since Covid.Examples of UGRs for an innovative culture.Based in Melbourne, Australia, Steve Simpson is an international speaker and culture change agent. He created the one-of-a-kind UGRs concept in the mid-'90s, initially focused on helping companies understand that without a solid culture built on UGRs, their efforts to improve service would be best to improve service limited. Until March last year, Steve traveled the world, speaking at conferences and working with organizations to help them understand and strategically improve their culture. He's now gone virtual :-)Besides already having achieved the highest accreditation in professional speaking a decade earlier, he earned the ultimate accolade for his groundbreaking work spanning five continents when Professional Speakers Australia bestowed on him its coveted 'Educator of the Year Award.' Steve has a Master's Degree from the University of Alberta (Canada). He is the author of two books and the co-author of two more, including ‘UGRs: Creating a Culture of Service' and ‘A Culture Turned.'ABOUTICT Podcast is all about innovation, communication, and technology – a few key areas that are super important in today's world. Something has changed in the sales game where potential clients are just playing games with you. Please tell us the story about when you were managing a sales team at a software company and you made a call that changed your perspective. Your goal is not to focus so much on the sale but to build up trust with people, so they tell you where they stand. How does that work? You say it's a myth that sales is a numbers game. It's not about how many contacts you make, but how deep you go in each conversation. Is that right? The old sales model is outdated and sales teams should move away from old language and methods into a modern approach. What is the new language salespeople should use? What are some mistakes sales managers make?. What are some outdated sales methods to avoid? You write that most businesses focus on how much they are selling and making, yet they don't focus on how much they're losing. How does that work? What practical changes can people managers make in their sales team's approach? === ABOUT ARI GALPER In a world where trust has become currency in the new economy, Ari Galper is the world's number 1 authority on trust-based selling. Endless chasing can be a dehumanising process. Ari is on a mission to re-invent sales by anchoring values of integrity and trust through Trust-Based Selling. In his book, "Unlock The Sales Game", Ari describes why having a mindset focusing on getting to the truth, instead of “getting the sale” is ironically 10 times more profitable. Company leaders and managers need to radically rethink how they sell. They know they need to be customer focused but don't know what that means or how to measure it. What is value? Value is about customer outcomes. Customers buy outcomes; not the products or services we think we are selling them. Grow the desireability of an outcome. Yet one of the pitfalls of leading salespeople is that some have a tendency to skip steps to win. How do value-focused companies act, feel and perform radically differently? SILOS – how do customers' silos limit the value you bring? Silo-limited customers with narrow buying processes lock salespeople into poorly differentiated selling processes. What is DIFFERENTIATION? Something that only you can deliver. How do you differentiate? How do you uncover value for the customer? How can a salesperson guide a customer to a better decision? What is VALUE-BASED PROSPECTING – ‘I recently achieved this outcome' . . . PRICE is the mother's milk of profits. What can you tell us about pricing power? Cost-cutting; You can't shrink your way to growth. You urge companies to make everyone who comes in contact with a customer to act and think like a seller looking for value gaps. How does someone start to think about being a CEO or any C-suite position? 1. Break the task into component parts – leading self, leading others, leading the enterprise. 2. Be honest with yourself about what you're good at and not good. Ask youself, 'Can I make the leap from contributor to leader?' 3. For any CEO role, look at the Board and major shareholders and ask, 'Could I have a good partnership with these people? Am I the right fit?' To prepare to become CEO, take a structured approach with these 5 phases: 1. Creative Foundations – your values, purpose, what sort of organisation you want to lead, strengths, experience and skills and also how you are perceived. 2. Get context and role-specific - strengthen skills and demonstrate performance across the 9 areas of CEO competency; be crystal clear on your strengths and derailers. 3. Presentation and practice - about the narrative of where you would take the organisation; SCR model. 4. Interviews – why would we trust you with leading the organisation? Personal qualities, skills, experience and how you would plug your gaps. 99 questions list. 5. Transition – the plan for time management, communications, short and medium term hires and exits. Why do the work of preparation? Because you have so much coming at you, so fast, these days you need to have your stuff together! Be the best equipped you can. Customers today care less about your marketing claims and more about your convenience, differentiation and speed of delivery. Despite the move to self-serve, and do-it-yourself, when you deny customer the option of talking to a real person, they will deny you their business. Social proof rules the day. People give far more weight to what others say about you than what you say about yourself. Great products, brilliant leaders and game-changing technology can all be negated by a few negative online comments and reviews. Few customers actually care about your passion, your "why" or your "story." They care about their "why" and how doing business with you benefits them. Customer service is always important, but less of a factor when so much of the buying process is automated or do-it-yourself. Loyalty has become less about the service and more about how your customers perceived the ease and speed of your buying experience. Are little white lies the slippery slope to lack of integrity? Find out your IQ - Integrity Quotient – with this quiz at https://www.integrityintensive.com/ posing dilemmas from life and work e.g. telling white lies to get out of a lunch appointment or getting out of agreements you've made. In this podcast episode of ‘Manage Self, Lead Others' I interview renowned ethicist, Stuart H Brody, on how to cultivate the practice of integrity. His book, ‘The Law of Small Things: Creating a Habit of Integrity in a Culture of Mistrust' is available on Amazon amzn.to/3cD7yFn TALKING POINTS Stuart challenges the listener with some true-to-life ethical dilemmas and suggests even a ‘white lie' habituates us to lack of truthfulness, making it considerably harder to be truthful in bigger things. He exposes our illusions of moral competence and urges us to practice integrity and truthfulness in the little things, so we can act with integrity in situations where consequences are far-reaching. Here's the link to the video interview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEZOySOo2U0 TALKING POINTS · If you start telling even white lies on small things, a process begins of avoiding truthfulness. And once that starts, it's a slippery slope leading to bigger things. · There's a duty of truthfulness. People know a white lie is not the right thing to do. They know they're being lazy or self-interested or sparing someone's feelings, when really, it's sparing their own embarrassment. It's avoiding the obligation to come up with a truthful explanation of why you're canceling. · In the Integrity Intensive quiz one question is about a manager who confides to you they plan to lay off one of your colleagues. But you know that colleague is about to buy a new house; you're concerned if they don't have a job it might create financial disaster. That's a dilemma. You have both a duty of loyalty to your boss, but there's an implied duty of truthfulness with your friend who is about to buy a house. Now you're on the horns of a dilemma. You've got a duty of loyalty, one of truthfulness. These come up at work and they're always clashing. · Integrity is really the skill of identifying promises you make, both explicitly as well as implied, in everyday life. Implied promises are harder to see, yet most of the promises we make are implied. ABOUT STUART H BRODY Renowned ethicist, Stu Brody has served prominently in law, politics and academia. He has appeared before the Supreme Court, written numerous articles on dispute settlement and employee relations, advised Presidential candidates, served as counsel to state government on ethics and lectures nationally on matters of ethics and integrity. This episode we're turning the mic around for a reverse interview with Nina Sunday by Pip Savaris, one of Nina's inhouse assistants. TALKING POINTS The Google company's PeopleLab Project Aristotle investigated the attributes of a manager that contribute to engagement and effectiveness. Social sensitivity means picking up subtle, nonverbal cues that only teams or individuals with high emotional intelligence will pick up. Behavior in team meetings: Fast talkers express their opinions with confidence, while reflective, introvert members of the team might withhold saying what they think. Does profitability come from focusing on results? Or is focusing on culture the answer? And what is culture anyway? Is it socializing together, celebrating birthdays, seasonal holidays? Look after purpose and profitability follows. Look after culture, profitability and results follow. The second attribute of a high-performing team is conversational equality, as discovered by Google's research project, Project Aristotle. Tool to facilitate conversational equality is the Talking Stick. Anecdote about U.S. Senator Susan Collins using a talking stick to break a deadlock between Democrats and Republicans. What's now becoming best practice is to scrap performance reviews and instead have regular one-on-ones, because fast feedback is important. More than one expert in leadership talks about the importance of starting the day with a 10 minute huddle. What's important too is sense of belonging. Patrick Lencioni talks about fear of conflict as one of the dysfunctions of a team. There's a difference between trust and psychological safety. And trust can be superficial. You may not say what you really think for fear that you will be disliked. I just learned that it's more important to tell the truth than to be liked or to be approved. The eight good behaviors of a manager and the flip side is, what are the poor behaviors we need to avoid? The world is moving slowly towards a better, best practice. If you can be part of the solution rather than part of the problem, it creates a wonderful ripple effect. < 37:44 > TALKING POINTS Why is it important for organizations to be thinking about inclusion and diversity? If you figure out how to do inclusion properly, you will gain commitment instead of compliance, and achieve more loyalty and creativity. 3 immutable forces around inclusion that will never change; 1 dominance 2 unconscious bias – have to be vigilant 3 degrees of difference Permeable factors: 1 affinity bias – 'mini-me' syndrome 2 assimilation – if people withhold their best ideas, leaders are not getting their best selves, they're getting a simulator. 3 political correctness – walking on egg shells; afraid to speak to each other across differences. Can't give honest feedback because might be accused of being racist. A leader has to listen to creative people e.g. Google company allows people to work 10% of time on their own projects. Psychological safety – one thing leaders can do is to go round the meeting, even a Zoom room, and ask each person to speak without interruption. While it's time-consuming, it buys you loyalty and commitment, because everyone's voice matters. < 34.16 > TALKING POINTS Gabrielle Dolan spent 17 years working for National Australia Bank in a senior leadership role in change management and project management. She experienced firsthand the challenges of communicating. 'As a leader, you think you've communicated, but then people aren't getting the message,' Gabrielle says. Gabrielle noticed that when she shared a story to communicate a message, people not only understood the message, but more importantly, they better remembered the message. And then she noticed good leaders were sharing stories. At 3-day conferences with speaker after speaker, the brilliant ones were brilliant because of stories. We need all the facts and figures and data, but it's stories that create emotional connection. People make decisions based on emotion, but they then search for evidence to support that emotional decision. Types of stories: Origin stories e.g. the origin of Mattel's Barbie doll, Creation stories, how the company started or how the product started. A company doesn't want to lose their corporate memory of stories. We can teach people the value of storytelling, educating so they share stories more effectively but also find stories from the past that we can use to inspire the future e.g. show the vision or the values and the behaviors of what we try to live by as a company. A manager can pose a question such as, tell me a time when one of you did something for a customer that made a difference to them, or tell me about a time when you felt really proud to work for this organization. I might bring 20 people together, some from the front line, senior people, junior people and ask them questions. Someone will tell a story and then someone goes, ‘Oh yeah, that reminds me of . . .' In 2 hours you could probably hear 50 stories; five or 10 are absolute gold. And at the end people go, ‘I just feel so proud to work here.' < 26:06 > TALKING POINTS You've got to be constantly evolving or you have no right to lead others. Cultivate a fascination with expanding your epistemology i.e. the sum total of your knowledge, skills and experience, to date. My latest book, Shift Culture, refers to self-leadership principles. I introduce a praying mantis character called Sol, short for solitude. Show me someone who's effective as a self-leader and they most likely give themselves what I call solitude time. They use the Sol Principle and, like the praying mantis, sit quietly 3 to 4 times a week for around 20 minutes, reconnecting with their mission, their purpose, their goals, their aspirations; shutting down the noise; to hear quiet whisperings come through, nudging them in the direction their soul, their spirit, wants to go. The Sol Principle is about the discipline of creating time to re-energize through solitude. R.E.A.P.A. model - Relax - Envision - Assess - Patience - Act How can a leader encourage team members to demonstrate more self-leadership? Have solitude thinking sessions; 15 - 20 minutes, sit quietly, think about the issues and the problems; tap into your subconscious mind. Come back with a couple of ideas. Before we jump into acting, let's just apply the REAPA process. Give people a chance to change their physiology, do something different than just sitting around the meeting table. Go for a walk, serve a couple of customers, let your subconscious mind percolate and just let it sit and reflect on it for awhile. You'll be amazed at the creativity when you come back together. < 26:15 > TALKING POINTS What is an intrapreneur? They are an entrepreneur who works inside an organization. They are an organization's lifeblood. Intrapreneurs often ask the difficult questions. They are likely to step up and challenge the status quo and ask, ‘Why are we doing it this way?' But they need to do a lot of groundwork so people can be ready to hear what they have to say. The intrapreneurialism movement is so important right now How can an organization foster an intrapreneurial culture? Firstly, identify the entrepreneurs. How? Profile your workforce. Secondly, give people permission to experiment, permission to think differently, permission to use their creativity, permission, to put their hand up and say, we could do this in a different or better way. ABOUT DR IRENA YASHIN-SHAW Dr Irena Yashin-Shaw is on a mission to liberate underutilised talent within workplaces. < 30:09 > TALKING POINTS The most innovative companies look across three areas; process, product and service. Why is it important for a manager to lead innovation and how can that be done? Innovation can make a massive difference. It relieves job boredom and can bring a new lease of life; an energy that wasn't there before. An innovative company doesn't need a whiz-bang product. It could be what's happening internally. If you can innovate your process, then that's automatically going to increase the valuation or the multiple of your EBIT. Mistakes: 3 types: real mistake - wrong process executed blackout - part of the process forgotten slip-up - right process executed incorrectly How a manager can lead innovation: facilitate an innovation exercise generate insights and ideas validate and prototype effectively pitch to convey the value of the idea Insights: 3 criteria: how workable? how unmet? how winnable? Ideas criteria: how technical? how easy or difficult? financial return? Tactically, does this idea solve a problem the organisation wants or needs solved? Does it relate to the bigger picture? How many unknowns are there? Use a scoring process to evaluate. COVID created a paradigm shift and given people a new opportunity to lead an inspirational culture. ABOUT NILS VESK, CSP Nils' research identified the major cause of this problem is that our biases get in the way of innovating. Nils has reinvented the innovation process through the use of innovation archetypes. Nils' quest is how to deal with obstructions to innovation. Professionally trained as a designer, Nils Vesk uses ‘Design thinking' to become Australia's ‘Innovation Architect'. < 28:30 > Co-elevation - how do you raise people up to bring out their brilliance? Everyone in the team is expected to be both a leader and a supporter. Leapfrogging: the leader allows the supporter to take the lead, then the leader supports them, the faster they understand what the hot seat feels like. Introverts can make good leaders as much as extroverts. Set up the mission and the alignment for the team member so they know how they are contributing. < 26:21 > TALKING POINTS Leadership is ability to build relationships so we can achieve our goals together with compassionate accountability. Intentional leadership is being aware. Leadership is a responsibility, not a position. THE most important interpersonal skills for a leader is coaching and questioning. The seven steps of intentional leadership is a model of leadership development. Step one is purpose. The three dark knights of leaders: narcissist sociopath Machiavellian Two types of people - character flaws vs. neurotic. Work with neurotic people because they take responsibility. Character-flawed people won't accept responsibility. Hiring a coach. It is the fastest way to improve your capability. < 23:26 > This episode we're turning the mic around for a reverse interview with Nina Sunday by a member of the podcast crew, Maeve Bailey. TALKING POINTS What are common business writing mistakes? If you use too many words when you write, the recipient takes longer to read it; can be harder to decipher. Seeing a sea of words without white space or layout or bullets might create a ripple effect of the recipient putting the email aside to read later, slowing down the chain of communication. What are top complaints about email communication? - old subject lines re-used for a new subject - not taking time to add a courtesy salutation - long sentences that are hard to follow; write one sentence, one idea - red flag words that turn off the reader e.g. ‘unfortunately', ‘you should' - unnecessary words making it too wordy The five sentences initiative - all email responses to be 5 sentences or less. Quick wins to eliminate needless words – avoid qualifiers. Pet peeve – unnecessary apostrophe in plurals e.g. video's, book's, etc. When to use apostrophe to show possession and in contractions. The contraction, ‘could've', pronounced as ‘could of'; subsequently leading to being spelled as ‘could of'. Eww! Add positive tone to emails to influence and build rapport, considering emails are words only with tone of voice, body language and facial expression absent. Redundancy is unnecessary repetition adding to wordiness e.g. ‘reason why', ‘close proximity'. How bullets or dot points aid comprehension and memory, and provide white space that is visually inviting to read. Techniques to avoid writer's block: - plan a document with pen and paper away from your desk; get your brain into big picture mode. - turn paper to landscape instead of portrait - ask who, what, where, when, why, how? - freewriting technique When to pick up the phone instead of emailing? - the power to influence a yes response comes from picking up the phone.- seek first to understand; don't start an email war - any time you find yourself writing and rewriting a particular paragraph because it's hard to explain, it's time to pick up the phone. These days, her focus is ultimately helping business leaders deliver captivating stories that are hard to forget. But in these latter years of her life, giving back is what pulls her forward: hosting a morning radio show in Perth and then there’s her sell-out storytelling charity event “Stories from the Heart” – featured as one of the top attractions at the Perth Fringe Festival Shall we step into this Lisa and start sharing??The Goods on Lisa:Lisa Evans is Perth’s leading Speaking and Business Storytelling Consultant and the CEO of Speaking Savvy and Soft Skills Academy. Jon shares some insights regarding the vibes and the addictive quality of the support and the energy you get from exchanging ideas in a setting that’s proven to be highly stimulating.“There is a genuine interest in helping each other! And so this is really… a strong sense of community - how do we support each other through these grand visions that we all hold” - Jon YeoCreating a Ripple Effect by Doing Small ThingsJon is a huge believer in the fact that you can make a big difference in the world by doing accumulating small gestures you volunteer every day over an extended period of time. It is a belief that he acquired through his upbringing and there’s an entire TEDx talk that he made a while back centered around this idea.“Small things can make a big difference.” - Jon YeoBuilding Momentum Using First PrinciplesIn our introduction, we’ve mentioned that Jon is well-known for being able to articulate complex things simply. But he’s often encountered a mindset that people feel there needs to be something more to the story. Like we somehow expect that complexity itself adds value. He reflects on the universal and effective nature of first principles and how we can use them to build momentum.“If you think about first principles, none of those are complex. Yet they’re all universally and infinitely effective. I think people don’t want to think about first principles. Mostly because it takes a lot of time, it takes a lot of effort and sometimes it’s confronting… And it’s that… resistance... that causes that momentum to be lost because we spend all our effort trying to break our inertia, rather than all our effort optimizing around that momentum.” - Jon YeoHow To Prepare a Good TEDx TalkThis was a unique experience for us to get valuable insight into what makes a strong TEDx Talk and Jon was very generous and honest in his response.“Is that talk, first of all, something that everyone’s talking about, no one’s talking about, or someone is talking about it but in a unique way… It’s that third one I’m looking for.” - Jon YeoCreating a Disproportionate Amount of AttentionIn order to get your story out there, you obviously need to have a strong position. But Jon also recognizes the necessity of creating attention and how you also need to invest your time and resources in an effort to develop a disproportionate amount of it.“If you have a great idea it’s not of any help to anyone if it doesn’t create attention. And a disproportionate amount of attention. If you think of great brands that always do that sort of thing, you’ve got… Elon Musk and his tweets, Richard Branson and his PR stunts… Once you know that you need to do that,... the other two factors are momentum and timing.” - Jon YeoThe Relationship Between Potential, Opportunities, and MomentumJon believes that each and every one of us needs to draw strength from and own a tendency to be the best person they can be. The consequences for not doing so can be dire for our growth and progress which he wonderfully explores in the relationship between three very important factors - Potential, Opportunities, and Momentum.“We’re undermining our potential. And if we’re undermining our potential, we’re undermining opportunities. And if we’re undermining our opportunities we’re undermining our momentum.” - Jon YeoStaying Invested In the Bigger PictureDuring the talk, Jon mentioned that we have a moral obligation to do our best, but he also recognizes that doing our best needs to encompass a notion of giving and sharing with others. We must not allow ourselves to be consumed by self-serving values.“I don’t think that our value to the community and the way that we will get rewarded is by self-serving attitudes and values. The only way humanity and community and culture and business and everything else we believe is important to us can really grow and amplify is if we’re constantly investing in that bigger picture.” - Jon YeoJon’s Message of Inspired EvolutionOh, how I loved talking to Jon and what a blessing this conversation has been! His analytical mind combined with a tendency to strive towards the simple provided me with a ton of inspiration and I hope they will inspire you as well. This has been a wonderful conversation about momentum and finding a unique voice that will help you tell your story in a way that affects the world for the better.“Stay the path. Believe that when you see something and that it lights you up - that is the right way. Be willing to that in order to have something new you have to give something up as well.” - Jon Yeo See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Tarran Deane is National President of Professional Speakers Australia. She is a Ducati-riding speaker, trainer, executive coach and consultant who helps leaders to lead more effectively. Once she left the corporate world, Tarran's goal was simply to become a speaker, but she soon morphed into an "entrepreneur with a message". "I knew I had to build my business first to release me to then go out and be the face of the business." Tarran recommends staying open to opportunities - your market and industry will tell you what they need: "then it's up to us to test and measure". She says speaking is delivering the what and the why, and the longer-form work - your intellectual property at a deeper level, for example consulting or coaching, is delivering the how and the when. Tarran and Reputation Revolution host, Trevor Young, chat about how thought leaders are now their own media company, and why it's important to stay current, to let go of things in order to to be ready for what's coming up. Says Tarran: "Every piece of content that we deliver needs to earn the right to stay in our repertoire on an annual basis, otherwise are we outdated, are we remaining relevant ... are we anchored to something because it's a bit of a crutch?" Trevor and Tarran also cover: Writing a book - "A book is highly aspirational, highly beneficial."Discovering your personal voiceCreating video content, including the power of behind-the-scenes video, and why keeping it genuine and real is attractive for viewers RELEVANT LINKS: Tarran's authority websiteTarran's parent company (Corporate Cinderella)Tarran's LinkedIn account
