It's a new year which, as with all new years, brings a chance for a renewal, a hope of a new beginning, and in this, the beginning of the second quarter of the 21st century, that hope was dashed within 48 hours with the invasion, kidnapping, and regime change in Venezuela and the killing of Renee Good. These events mark a transit point that suggests the American government will continue its journey away from cooperation and trust and move even faster towards coercion and hate. Beyond what any of the events of the last week mean for Americans themselves, all of this creates an increasingly difficult trade environment for everyone, including Americans themselves. Meanwhile... The December 2025 Core Upate ended on December 29. Publishers appear to have taken the hardest hits with large scale declines taking place in all venues such as Discover, News, Top Stories, and organic search. One publisher, Tailwind CSS has let go of 75% of its engineers after seeing a 40% drop in traffic from Google. Microsoft is looking for a senior project manager to combat spam on Bing and Copilot. This is an incredible opportunity for someone able to, a) actually tame web spam at Bing, and b) explain how Bing search works to a wider audience like a certain beloved SEO character from days long past once did. Lightning rarely strikes the same place twice but it is known to strike all the time. Why not in Redmond? Google is also hiring, looking for a AI Answers and Search Quality Engineer. Based out of Cambridge MA, the position sounds decidedly less sexy than then Bing position does but, given it's the Internet, most things sound less sexy than the Bing position does. Google is also hiring a Search Intelligence Chief of Staff. This is absolutely decidedly more sexy than the Bing position. Far less sexy, and almost downright scare, are some of the stuff coming out of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this year. We often cover the weirder inventions, this one combining AI with a holographic image under the name, Friend in a Bottle. Far scarier than that is the revelations Elon Musk's AI Grok is being used to create and widely distribute non-consensual nudes based on people's images and what the UK based Internet Watch Foundation is calling, "criminal imagery involving kids". A study by digital marketing agency Eight Oh Two concluded that 37% of consumers are starting their searches with AI rather than Google. Google is personalizing AI Overviews and AI Mode Answers. Why our panic about AI is nothing new—and why history suggests we have far more creative agency over our technological future than either Silicon Valley's determinists or the neo-Luddites would have you believe.Who isn't afraid of AI? But according to the San Francisco-based technology historian Vanessa Chang, that's nothing new. So, she says, our ChatGPT age should give us hope rather than the reactionary hysteria marking much of today's conversation about AI. In her new book, The Body Digital, Chang argues that our bodies have always been living interfaces between our minds and our world. Designing that interface has always been a choice, and so are the worlds that we are always building. From cuckoo clocks to player pianos to gramophones, every generation has panicked about machines colonizing human experience. And every generation has eventually found ways to shape those machines to human ends. So don't be scared of ChatGPT, Chang says. Get creative. Get agency. * Tech anxiety is a historical constant, not a contemporary crisis. From Sousa's panic about player pianos replacing human musicianship to today's fears about ChatGPT, every generation has worried that machines will colonize human experience. The pattern itself should be instructive—and perhaps reassuring.* Our bodies have always been technological. Eyeglasses, writing, clocks—these aren't separate from our embodied existence but extensions of it. The digital age hasn't created the “body digital”; it's simply the latest chapter in a much longer story of humans using tools to reshape how we sense, think, and interact with the world.* The real question isn't whether technology will change us—it's who gets to design that change. Chang insists we've always had agency in our relationship with machines. The danger isn't AI itself but allowing corporate interests and proprietary systems to dictate the terms of our technological embodiment without democratic input or creative resistance.* AI isn't “all-knowing”—it's deeply circumscribed. Large language models are shaped by training data, developer biases, invisible labor in developing countries, and corporate imperatives. The mythology of omniscient AI obscures the very human choices and limitations embedded in these systems.* Writing and AI belong to the same evolutionary story. Both are technologies for extending human cognition beyond the body. Before writing, your thoughts died with you. After writing, they could travel across time and space. The Department of Justice has informed a federal court that the grand jury transcripts related to Ghislaine Maxwell do not contain any new or previously unknown information. In its recent filing, the DOJ explained that it had turned over an annotated version of the transcripts, but asserted they offer nothing substantive that would alter the current understanding of Maxwell's case. This development comes in response to ongoing litigation and public interest in unsealing records tied to Maxwell's role in Jeffrey Epstein's trafficking operation.While there was speculation that the transcripts might contain revelations about Epstein's network or implicate additional high-profile figures, the DOJ dismissed such hopes, emphasizing the transcripts were legally routine. The filing is likely to frustrate advocates and survivors who have long accused the DOJ of shielding powerful individuals and limiting accountability.
