The journey IS the THERE. And it is SO TRUE for us as speakers, too: People come to me in such varying stages - some embracing the path opening themselves up to learning and growing and some - resisting the journey wanting to rush to the END, to this idea of THERE… When in reality - there is no THERE. It is a circular, constant evolution and iteration and growth process. So I decided help us ALL embrace this journey we’re on by sharing some of my all-time favorite conversations I’ve had about these really essential parts of the journey. The parts that even if we are on board with... we have to always keep working on. Cause the journey IS the there. Over the last four years I’ve talked with some incredible people - some of whom it’s fair to assume you’ve heard of - and others, you likely haven’t. And yet - ALL of these conversations held some AHA moments that will help us walk along in the journey more openly, more thoughtfully - more courageously. I've got 10 episodes for you, re-published favorites here on This Moved Me. And I can't wait for you to hear!

You cannot speak (well) without fear. And as we take on any new risk, new venture, new challenge  - we want to move through fear so that we can experience FREEDOM in our speaking.    Getting to FREEDOM means we want to act FEARLESS, even though we are afraid.    In this new virtual world - we need to be fearless in a powerful way.  Talking to an empty audience? - Move through your fear - your audience still needs you.  Attempting a Webinar for the first time to share your message? Move through that fear - your audience still needs you.  Trying a totally new approach in your message sharing? Show up, do the work, even when you’re afraid - your audience still needs you.    And on today's on the show I’m talking with Scott Savage - a pastor and frequent guest on This Moved Me - because he brings a passion for the craft of speaking and combines it with his wise and generous spirit. I wanted him to talk about how he’s moved his speaking virtually - and what that means for him - AND, I wanted to talk with him about the skills needed to do these kinds of things - because he himself has moved THROUGH fear. He is experiencing the FREEDOM in his speaking - and it’s inspiring.

Imagine speaking in front of a thousand people for the first time. You practiced your speech over a dozen times but the moment you walk across that stage, you freeze. Your palms are sweaty, you can feel your heart beat fast, and your hands are slightly shaking. What you’re feeling is the adrenaline rush kicking in. You may start to feel awkward and uncomfortable at first, but that’s not a bad thing! There is power in embracing who you are and honing in on the art of telling your story. Our guest this week, Sally Zimney, presentation coach, speaker, and host at This Moved Me podcast, believes in the power of storytelling. Sally believes that your audience wants to connect with you, the vulnerable, raw, and real you. Being nervous is a completely normal human trait, everyone gets nervous about the things that are most important to them. When we embrace who we are and hone in on our storytelling, our audience won’t care if we forgot part of our routine. Our audience want to trust us and empathize with us. The moment we realize that it’s less about perfection and more about connection, the more people understand who we are. Harris III - magician, producer, creative guru - and the man behind the now practically infamous STORY Gathering that I continually rave about here on the show. Yes, that's right - I went straight to the source to hear about how it all came to life - and how to create something both uncommon and universally moving - a challenging feat. I've had so many guests on the show that were inspired by my experience at Story - Jason Jaggard, Brad Montague, and now Harris. Hank Fortener - a favorite with my listeners - was also there last year. And it was first introduced to me by my guest Lindsay O'Connor who read some of Story's marketing materials for her This Moved Me Moment, and I gasped with awe for the beauty of the writing. That's what I'm talking about: beauty, creativity, risk, identity, community. These themes swirl in and around the STORY crew, and it makes for an experience that will nourish your soul and challenge us to do work that really matters. You guys - I realize that much of this sounds like a commercial for STORY. They are not paying me to say any of this. I get no kick back from this. I am just a real, live FAN because of my experience last year - and I want to see you there! AND! And! And. (I'm excited. Can you tell?) Since I recorded this conversation, Story has asked me to be a part of the experience in September. Live coaching, anyone!? Aw yeah. So - Let's do this! This week I hit my 150th episode. WHA??? (I know, I feel the same way.) Turns out it was a LOT of work - and that I love it way more than I ever thought I would! This Moved Me has challenged me to show up, and take a risk. (A muscle all of us speakers need to flex as much as we can.) And that sometimes people dig what I do! And sometimes, they don't. And that has to be ok if I'm going to do this. At the end of every one of my Mini Moved Me episodes for the last year or so, I have included a little something for those who stick with me to the end: a tiny little outtake - me, messing up somehow. There may be 3 people out there who hear them - but it's not really about that. It's about practicing the art of showing up, ANYWAY.

Scott Savage – a Twitter friend! - found me through one of my all-time favorite episodes – Hank Fortener. Hank and Scott have many things in common – they are both speakers, they are both pastors, they both have this wonderful combination of skill and insight that makes them both really good at what they do, but also WISE at what they do. These are my favorite kinds of guests – guests that dig deeper with me on why this matters. In Scott's life - whether as a blogger or speaker, his goal is to empower us with new perspective - and he makes good on that promise. And here’s what I really appreciate about Scott – he is so clear and honest on the WORK that it takes to become a transformative speaker. He believes in the opportunities that are in front of us when we “take the stage.” And he prepares, invites feedback, polishes, invests himself… and then starts over again the following week. That kind of dedication and commitment has earned my respect – and I can’t wait for you to also lean into his insight.   Show highlights: On Becoming Better [Tweet "#Speakers: "Nothing can replace experience." @scottsavagelive on @ThisMovedMe"]   On the show, we talked about: Scott's journey to experienced and skilled speaker, learning from those speakers he admired and that moved through him The importance and challenge of the rhythm of the pastor's speaking schedule What "transformation" looks like - and how Scott nurtures his talks to move his audience using a "Star Moment" - a moment they'll always remember And the role of feedback, failing and mining your life's bumps to bring insight to your audience [Tweet ""I got better because I gave lots of bad talks and got brutal feedback." @scottsavagelive on @ThisMovedMe"]   Resources/Links: Scott's Blog - Scott Savage Live Scott on Twitter  (he shares good stuff there - check it out!) It was a moving moment for me because I haven't auditioned for anything in quite a long time - so it was good to be nervous, and good to put myself out there. [Good news! I got in! More on this soon.] For your viewing pleasure, take a look at one of my favorites on the LTYM YouTube channel! SCOTT:  Scott reminded us about the "me too moments" that can be so powerful in our talks. We think we're the only one, but when we hear another person's story we can find the universal in someone else's specific. I'm grateful, ******* And - THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS! Dr. Nick Morgan (a guest on This Moved Me) created the Presentation Prep Course. It's like having Nick coach you - which is no small thing! If you are prepping for a presentation and can't afford the costly hours of hiring someone live - check out this e-course!  And, I cannot forget the editing geniuses at We Edit Podcasts! They are so on the ball.  Just last week I hadn't heard from my editor - which was strange - and so I sent an email expressing my concern. I've got a special edition of This Moved Me this week! I gave a big hint about it in my weekly This Moved Me newsletter a few weeks back... so, for those who are not signed up for these emails (why aren't you signed up for these?!), let me see if I can set this up for you.   A few weeks ago I attended the Minneapolis Foundation's 100-year anniversary conference. They had some HUGE keynote speakers lined up - Dan Buettner from the Blue Zone project (hilarious, I'm dying to interview him), Michio Kaku - the physicist futurist (he is really something - a total entertainer) - and then our guest for today's show - Dan Pallotta, founder and president of Advertising for Humanity and the Charity Defense Council.   You see, Dan invented the modern-day charity event, and in doing so, raised hundreds of millions of dollars for some of the biggest causes of the day. But it wasn't an easy ride. Dan's TED Talk - one of the 100-most viewed of all time - inspires and insists on a new way of thinking about how we treat charities and nonprofits so that these organizations have a fighting chance at actually changing the world.   Loved our brief 15-minutes to dig into how we can convince a sometimes unwilling audience!

On this week’s This Moved Me, I talk with the famous TED-speaker, Julian Treasure. Julian’s 5 TED talks have accumulated over 20 million views worldwide! Obviously, Julian’s passion of talking about how we speak – how we listen – and how we create sound that people WANT to listen to – resonates! I was so thrilled to get some of his time to share his expertise with you.   In the show we talked about:  Julian’s story – how he started helping people create their brands through sound The experience of speaking at TED How to help your audience hear you The power of filters The importance – and difference between – preparation and practice When authenticity turns to artifice   TMM MOMENTS: Julian: The experience of seeing a student of his grow and improve, in one short day. When we commit ourselves to making a difference, it often comes back to us!   Sally: My husband and I went to Universal studios, and I got to see Hogwarts castle. It reminded me of the power of literature, and the connection we build with these characters and worlds.

On this week’s This Moved Me, I talk with Jane Leyden Cavanaugh – speaker, improviser, comedian – and spiritual guide. Yes, that’s right – Jane is a hilarious prophet. So, we dove in to talk about the important connection between the truth and the funny.   In the show we talked about:  Jane’s time at the Groundlings – learning what funny really is When she finds the true in the funny – building her prophetic voice The importance of vulnerability in this work The power of imagery – inspired by Parker Palmer’s Let Your Life Speak And the realization that we have to find our wisdom and insight by doing the work ourselves.   TMM MOMENTS: Jane: This powerful quote by George Bernard Shaw: “This is the true joy in life – being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a might one; being thoroughly worn out before you are throw on to scrap heap; being a force of nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances.”   This quote has inspired Jane’s purpose to speak with a prophetic voice – a voice that lifts people up and leaves them with hope and an idea of what could be (rather than being a clod of ailments and grievances). Love it.   Sally: Jane’s TMMM is what moved me!

On this week’s This Moved Me, I talk with Malcom Chapman – speaker, Bush Fellow and community leader on the power of our speaking opportunities to move our community and really make a difference. Though we had some challenging audio - I decided to still share because the content of the conversation was so great. My apologies for the static - bare with me on this one! - and enjoy!   In the show we talked about:  Malcom’s Story The Bush Fellowship – and how we serve Malcom’s biggest challenges The power of family and our stories   TMM MOMENTS: Malcom: An ELCA Youth Gathering, where he experienced a Pastor preaching to console himself. The power of that story, and the vulnerability in that – Malcom felt like he knows him now.   (We also gave a shout-out to President Obama’s Eulogy after the Charleston shooting. https://youtu.be/RK7tYOVd0Hs)   Sally: This hilarious and stupid video about the impact of Helium Beer. On this week’s This Moved Me, I talk with Aly Wallberg – speaker, communications coach, teacher and business professional – about the power of rhetoric to learn about ourselves, each other and the world.   NOTES: Aly Wallberg and I connected through her short and lively Ignite Minneapolis Talk where she analyzed Sarah Palin's Lipstick on a Pitbull convention speech. I loved the talk and thought Aly was brilliant and funny. So of course I had to have her on the show!    Aly is a speaker, communications coach and generally smart human who brings her expertise to her work in the corporate world, as well. It was so fun to connect with a person who has a similar passion and excitement about words and the impact they can have.   In the show we talked about:  The process of creating a somewhat controversial talk The role that studying rhetoric can have in the every day work world And the loftier benefits of studying rhetorical appeals - knowing ourselves and each other more powerfully   TMM MOMENT: ALY: The podcast Death, Sex and Money - a podcast about the things we don't talk about. The Living Alone and Liking It Sometimes episode.    Sally: 92Y - Check it out!  Especially liked the episode with Dick Cavett and Alec Baldwin.. compare that to fun and frivolous Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper episode.
