Podcast Episode: Blue Zones Book Club – The Power Nine In this episode, we dive into the seventh installment of our Blue Zones Book Club, exploring the "Power Nine"—the nine habits identified by Dan Buettner in his book *The Blue Zones: Secrets for Living Longer Lessons from the Healthiest Places on Earth*. These habits, observed across five cultures on four continents, offer valuable insights into living a long, healthy life. As always, our discussion is purely educational and meant to offer nuggets of wisdom for your personal well-being. Key Points Discussed 1. Introduction to Blue Zones and the Power Nine: - Blue Zones are regions where people live significantly longer, healthier lives. These areas share common lifestyle habits that contribute to their residents' longevity. 2. Power Nine Habits: - Move Naturally: Incorporate movement into daily activities rather than relying on structured exercise routines. Examples include walking more, sitting on the ground, and engaging in daily chores that require physical activity. - Purpose: Having a clear sense of purpose can add up to seven years to your life. The hosts discuss how to identify and nurture your life's purpose. - Downshift: Stress management through daily rituals like meditation, naps, and socializing. Simple practices like watching funny videos or writing thank-you notes can also help reduce stress. - 80% Rule: Eat until you're 80% full, a practice common in Okinawa. Focus on mindful eating, using smaller plates, and consuming the largest meal in the middle of the day. - Plant Slant: Emphasize plant-based foods in your diet, including beans, vegetables, and nuts. Limit meat consumption to a few times per month. - Wine at 5: While most Blue Zones inhabitants enjoy moderate alcohol consumption, the hosts emphasize that this habit is likely more about socializing and relaxation rather than the alcohol itself. - Belong: Faith and community involvement are vital. Regular participation in faith-based or community activities can significantly extend your life expectancy. - Loved Ones First: Prioritize family relationships. The hosts highlight the importance of close family bonds and investing time in loved ones. - Right Tribe: Surround yourself with a supportive social circle. Your friends significantly influence your health and happiness, so choose wisely. 3. Practical Tips: - The hosts offer actionable steps for incorporating these habits into daily life, such as planning walking meetings, starting a meditation practice, and joining social groups. 4. Event Announcement: - Amanda, Kendra, and Laura will be attending the ACEP Scientific Assembly in Las Vegas this September. Join them for the second annual EM networking event at the Libertine Social Lounge in Mandalay Bay on Monday, September 30th, from 5 to 7 PM. Tickets are limited, so be sure to get yours soon! 5. Blue Zones Book Club, Part 6 - Singapore Hosts: Amanda, Laura, and Kendra Episode Summary: In this episode, Amanda, Laura, and Kendra dive into the sixth installment of their Blue Zones book club, focusing on Singapore. Despite its urban environment, Singapore boasts one of the highest life expectancies in the world, proving that longevity isn't limited to rural, pastoral lifestyles. The hosts explore how this small island nation has transformed its public health landscape and shares insights into the programs and policies that have contributed to its citizens' long, healthy lives. Key Takeaways: 1. Singapore's Transformation: - In 1960, the average life expectancy in Singapore was just 65 years. Today, it has risen to 84.7 years, with some citizens living even longer. - The country ranks number one in healthy life expectancy and has the world's lowest rate of cardiovascular mortality. 2. Health Initiatives: - Singapore has implemented various outreach programs, including health screenings, cooking classes, and nurse dispatch services to connect those living alone. - The National Steps Challenge incentivizes physical activity, rewarding citizens for logging 10,000 steps daily with health points redeemable for various goods and services. 3. Strict Laws: - Singapore is known for its strict laws, including severe penalties for drug possession and the prohibition of firearms. While some might view these as extreme, they contribute to the country's low crime rates and high levels of public trust. 4. Education and Social Structure: - Education is highly valued, with Singapore ranking number one internationally in math and science for several years. The nation also emphasizes a common language (English) and a mix of ethnicities within communities to promote tolerance and social cohesion. 5. Unusual Takeaways: - The hosts humorously critique the chapter's somewhat unconventional advice, such as choosing a safe neighborhood and focusing on financial success, which felt out of place compared to the rest of the Blue Zones book. Additional Notes: - If you are going to be at ACEP Scientific Assembly in Las Vegas, join us at the EM Networking event at the Libertine Social Lounge in Mandalay Bay on Monday, September 30th, from 5 to 7 PM. Tickets are available through the link in the show notes.- Sponsor Shoutout: Special thanks to Brault for sponsoring the event. Brault offers scalable services to support emergency medicine practices, providing everything from full-service RCM partnerships to business function management. Today, I am blessed to have Mary Ruddick here with me. Dubbed the "Sherlock Holmes of Health" for her unique ability to expeditiously assess and remediate rare neuromuscular conditions that others have deemed impossible, Mary Ruddick can regularly be found endangering herself in the untouched corners of the world to learn from and distill the wisdom from the last remaining traditional cultures.  She shares her findings and knowledge via her sought after keynote speeches, 100+ podcast appearances, her published articles, and her work both in front and behind the camera.  In this episode, Mary argues that traditional diets, which universally include animal products, have supported excellent health in indigenous communities worldwide. She contrasts this with modern, often vegan, diets promoted in Western societies, which she associates with a rise in diseases. Mary highlights the historical mishandling of certain foods, such as corn, leading to widespread nutritional deficiencies like pellagra due to a lack of proper processing knowledge. She suggests that many modern health problems arise from nutritional misunderstandings and a failure to acknowledge the benefits of animal-based diets. Despite recognizing the temporary benefits of vegan diets, Mary warns that they lack the nutrients needed for health and rebuilding the body. Tune in as Mary explains that H. pylori is a necessary bacterium that should ideally reside on the tips of the villi in a healthy gut, but damage to the microbiome and villi can cause it to migrate into cracks, leading to problems. She critiques current stool-based microbiome testing as limited, noting that while diverse diets correlate with healthier microbiomes, this relationship is oversimplified. Mary emphasizes the significant impact of lifestyle factors like light exposure and stress on the microbiome and highlights how other cultures have long integrated microbiome considerations into medical practices. Podcast Title: Blue Zones Part 2: Nicoya, Costa Rica Episode Description:In this episode of our podcast, hosts Amanda, Laura, and Kendra dive into part two of our Blue Zones book club, focusing on Nicoya, Costa Rica. The discussion is grounded in the insights from Dan Buettner's research on the world's healthiest places for living longer, as captured in his book and complemented by a Netflix series. . Key Points Discussed: Introduction to Nicoya, Costa Rica: The hosts discuss how this Blue Zone is known for its exceptional longevity, where men have twice the likelihood of living until 90 compared to the U.S., with significantly lower health expenditures. The Importance of Community and Lifestyle: The episode highlights the significant impact of community, traditional diets, and active lifestyles on longevity. Nicoyans engage in natural daily movements rather than structured exercise, emphasizing the role of environment and learned behaviors over genetics in longevity. Dietary Habits: Traditional diets in Nicoya focus on plant-based foods, particularly the "three sisters" of beans, corn, and squash. The preparation methods, such as soaking corn in lime, are discussed for their health benefits, including the prevention of rickets and the promotion of better bone health. Public Health Success: The effectiveness of Costa Rica's rural healthcare system, which focuses on preventative care and regular household visits, is credited with significant improvements in community health metrics like reduced infant mortality and increased life expectancy. Cultural and Environmental Factors: The discussion extends to the roles of faith, family bonds, and the sunny, dry climate of Nicoya in fostering a healthy, stress-reduced lifestyle. Challenges of Modernization: The hosts also touch on the challenges posed by increased connectivity, tourism, and the influx of modern lifestyle elements like junk food and social media, which may dilute traditional practices that contribute to longevity. Episode Conclusion:The episode wraps up with a call to action for listeners to integrate lessons from Nicoya into their lives, emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong social connections, engaging in regular physical activity, and adhering to a diet rich in whole foods. The hosts remind listeners of the benefits of finding a purposeful life and the importance of community in achieving a healthier, longer life. Promotion:Listeners are encouraged to check out the hosts' online course, Wellness 911, which aims to transform demoralized doctors from "fried to fantastic." Details can be found at www.thewholephysician.com. The episode closes with a request for listeners to leave reviews to help spread the word about the podcast and the valuable insights it offers to physicians and health enthusiasts alike. Welcome, I'm Kevin Miller, your host, guide and fellow traveler as we unearth what drives us. When we know what drives us and why, we get where we want to go.  Our bodies drive everything we do, so in an effort to get them in the best shape possible, in this episode we are talking about food. I recently covered the best meats. Here, the best grains. With the huge focus on gluten and inflammation you hear more and more about being grain free and that all grain and carbs are the enemy. Yet as Dan Buettner covers in the Blue Zones which showcase the healthiest places in the world, most of them have some grains as a dietary staple. Overall, yes, we're best to minimize grains. Just like meat. A great plate of food would have veggies as half or more of the meal and not a side item. In America we have made a staple of big portions of grains at every meal. Who didn't grow up having bread with pretty much every meal? And we generally choose the least nutrient dense, life-giving options. Here at Empire Building, we're all about building a big business, and more importantly, a bigger life. So today we dive into how to live a big, long, healthy, robust life. We are talking Blue Zones.Blue Zones are parts of the world where people live the longest. Dan Buettner came up with the term while studying the places that have the highest life expectancy or with the highest proportions of people who reach age 100: Barbagia region of Sardinia; Ikaria, Greece; Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica; Seventh Day Adventists in Loma Linda California; and Okinawa, Japan. In this episode, we review the 9 daily habits that Dan identified across these communities. They are: Move naturally, have purpose, down shift, eat to 80% full, stick to a plant-based diet, drink alcohol moderately, belong to a community, put your family first, and find your circle of support. We dive into the details of each one and talk about how we can find space for them in our own lives as Empire Builders.Resources:Learn more at the Blue Zones Project Listen to Simon Sinek's podcast episode with Dan Buettner Read Peter Attia's book “Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity” Connect on Instagram:Seychelle Van Poole: @seychellevpSarah Reynolds: @sarahreynoldsojiWendy Papasan: @wendypapasanKymber Lovett-Menkiti: @kymbermenkitiTiffany Fykes: @tiffanyfykesProduced by NOVA Media

The U.S. is set to have its oldest President ever. Should we be worried, or are we thinking about aging the wrong way? The unprecedented age of the two United States presidential candidates, Biden and Trump, has sparked fiery debates over whether a leader can be ‘too old' to effectively run a country. Our guest for this episode, neuroscientist Dr. Charan Ranganath, recently published a New York Times op-ed offering an alternative view: age itself may not be a useful metric for measuring how successfully a president might lead the nation. In this episode of ‘Your Brain On', we discuss: • The different types of memory, and how they work • How our brains can remain more resilient than is often thought in older age • Historic figures who have made significant contributions to the world during their twilight years • The inspiring power of our cognitive reserve We're also joined by longevity expert Dan Buettner, renowned for his work on ‘The Blue Zones' — parts of the world with longer life expectancy — for a conversation about why having an older leader might not be an inherently bad thing. This is the SEASON ONE FINALE of Your Brain On. Thank you so much for listening! We return in May 2024 with ten more exhilarating stories about the world through a neuroscientific lens. ‘Your Brain On' is hosted by neuroscientists and public health advocates Ayesha and Dean Sherzai. ‘Your Brain On... You can't say the word “midlife” without imagining a crisis. An aging bald guy who cheats on his wife and buys a sports car to fill the void. But Chip Conley says we're looking at it all wrong. The midlife age range has been unfairly branded, and he's on a mission to change it. He co-founded MEA, the Modern Elder Academy, in 2018. The world's first ‘midlife wisdom school' has a campus in Baja, California, and a new one is opening in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Today's episode is a life-affirming compilation on the theme of community and connection. I chose it because it's a subject that comes up in one way or another in almost every podcast conversation I have. Researchers, thinkers, and experts alike are concluding that one of the most significant contributing factors to our mental, physical and emotional health is our interactions with other human beings. Our ancestors evolved as a collective – ancient humans thrived in tribes. From keeping safe at night to hunting for and sharing food, coming together as a community was essential for our survival. And it's easy to forget we're not that different today. Sure, the world has transformed. Travel and technology mean families often live far apart, and younger generations are more likely to communicate through screens than face to face. We can survive without community, but can we really thrive?Science has shown how loneliness affects more than mood, leaving a lasting imprint on our mental and physical health. Reaching out to others then, is one of the best things we can do to protect and improve our holistic health. And I don't just mean asking for help. By giving to others, volunteering your time or lending an ear, your own wellbeing is boosted alongside the recipients'. Feeling part of a community is as much about making a contribution as being welcomed.Of course, it can be easier said than done. Maybe you don't have family nearby, you work alone, or you find it hard to make friends. This podcast is here to help. I guarantee that by the end you'll feel compelled to embrace community, convinced of the reasons it matters, and inspired by all the simple, actionable ideas this wonderful selection of guests share. You'll hear voices including Dr Gabor Maté, Johann Hari, Dr Tommy Wood and Professors Laurie Santos, Robert Waldinger and Marc Schulz. Together we cover the reasons connection is key, the health benefits it affords, and how to find your community. We hear from Dr Pippa Grange, Dr Dacher Keltner, Kelly McGonigal, The Happy Pear, and many more on how to cultivate friendships and intimacy, and why it's kindness that counts. My team and I really enjoyed compiling this episode for you and it's served as a reminder to all of us, too, to prioritise the people in our lives a little bit more. Even if that's something you already do, is there someone you could reach out to who might be struggling to do the same? Each clip in this podcast comes from a full-length episode, so if there are voices that particularly resonate with you, check the show notes for links to listen to their episodes in full. Together, these clips are a celebration of the power of community and friendships old and new – I hope this episode helps you to find yours.Find out more about my NEW Journal here https://drchatterjee.com/journalThanks to our sponsors:https://boncharge.com/livemorehttps://exhalecoffee.com/livemorehttps://drinkag1.com/livemoreShow notes https://drchatterjee.com/410DISCLAIMER: The content in the podcast and on this webpage is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
