Parent coach Oona Hanson joins us to discuss how going to a physical therapist for back pain led her down a wellness-culture rabbit hole, why dietary restrictions to “fight inflammation” just ended up harming her relationship with food and her body, how she got the dubious diagnosis of “adrenal fatigue,” and more. Behind the paywall, we get into how she helped her child heal from an eating disorder (and how that process changed the course of her career), how parents can help their kids navigate pressures from diet and wellness culture, why smart and science-minded people can still fall for wellness misinformation, her experience with perimenopause and wellness culture, and more. Annette Bosworth, M.D., is an internal medicine physician and a leading authority in informatics and optimal brain health. Author of the runaway bestseller, Anyway You Can: A Beginner's Guide to Ketones for Life, Dr. Boz, for the past two decades, has helped patients overcome long-term chronic conditions such as obesity, depression, autoimmune problems, and addiction. She accomplishes this by applying lifestyle adjustments, teaching preventive medicine, and other therapeutic paths. Dr. Bosworth is a frequent lecturer at the Department of Defense and Counter-terrorism agencies, teaching the nation's front-line defenders how to optimize their brains and bodies with ketogenic science. Before opening her clinic in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Dr. Boz taught at the University Of South Dakota Sanford School Of Medicine. Teaching people about health and wellness has always been a recurring theme in Dr. Boz's life and career. Born into a farming family in rural South Dakota, she witnessed first-hand the value and importance of individual contribution to strengthening a community. This and other hometown experiences convinced Dr. Boz to stay in the domain of Internal Medicine versus taking advantage of numerous opportunities to become a celebrated doctor. Being an internal medicine physician allowed Dr. Boz to work intimately with her patients, refusing to give up on them when others, and sometimes the patients themselves, did. This is what Dr. Boz finds fulfillment, and this is what she calls "meaningful medicine," this is how she serves her community - one ketone at a time. Dr. Boz's steadfast desire for first-class patient care hasn't gone unnoticed. She has been featured on CNN, Time Magazine, US News & World Report, Fox News, and other major news outlets. Despite her rigorous schedule, Dr. Boz does find time to lead volunteer medical mission trips to Haiti and delivers health-related talks to churches, jails, and town halls. Along with her husband, she savors the adventure of raising sons. In this episode, Leslie Beck, Medcan's Clinical Director of Food and Nutrition, discusses the US News & World Report's Best Diets rankings. This year marks the 15th year in a row that the US News & World Report has published these diet rankings, which were released in early January. Sixty-nine leading health experts evaluated 38 diets in 21 different categories. Beck reveals the top four overall-rated diets for 2025 and also highlights some of the other notable category winners, and explains how following these diets can help you achieve your health goals. The Rankings: Out of 38 diets, which diet ranked highest? (Hint: It's one of these four):  MIND diet Flexitarian diet DASH diet Mediterranean diet The Categories: In addition to Best Overall Diet, categories also included:  Best for Healthy Eating Best for Inflammation, Brain Health, Menopause, Prediabetes, Arthritis and Fatty Liver What The Top Diets Have in Common: Key features that support overall health and well-being Takeaways: All of this year's top rated diets emphasize whole plant foods, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans and lentils, nuts, lean proteins and healthy fats, while limiting adding sugars and saturated fats. All of the diets have solid evidence to support their effectiveness for managing or preventing a health condition or chronic disease. None of the diets restrict entire food groups or ban certain foods.  The best diet is the one you can sustain long-term while meeting your health and lifestyle needs. When considering a diet, ask yourself: Does the plan promote a way of eating that's good for your children? (Find out why that's important by listening to the episode).  For personalized advice, consult your doctor or a Medcan dietitian at www.medcan.com/nutrition.

The standard high school education covers a broad and deep array of state-mandated subjects but doesn't necessarily cultivate strong critical reasoning skills. That's a shame, because those skills are essential to success in higher education. Amy and Mike invited college dean Louis Newman to explore what thinking critically in college means. What are five things you will learn in this episode? Do teens typically arrive at college with sufficient critical thinking skills?  What does critical thinking mean in an academic context? What kinds of critical thinking do college professors expect students to do in their courses?  How can parents best support their students in college?  How can learners improve their critical thinking skills? MEET OUR GUEST Louis E. Newman is the former Dean of Academic Advising and Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education at Stanford University. His responsibilities at Stanford included overseeing an extensive residential advising program, the pre-law and pre-med advising programs, transfer and co-term student advising, new student orientation programs, a summer bridge program, and the university's academic progress review system. At Stanford, he grew the advising program, promoted a holistic approach to academic advising, and advocated for liberal education. He is also the John M. and Elizabeth W. Musser Professor of Religious Studies, Emeritus, at Carleton College, where he taught for thirty-three years. During his tenure at Carleton, he also served as an Associate Dean of the College, which included expanding the advisor training program and launching new programs to support advisors. He served for a term as Director of the Perlman Center for Learning and Teaching, which sponsored weekly programs for faculty and staff on all aspects of pedagogy, academic policy, and trends in higher education. In this role he functioned as the informal mentor to the faculty at Carleton, which is consistently rated by US News & World Report as #1 for undergraduate teaching. He is also an internationally recognized scholar in the field of Jewish ethics and has written and co-edited several books in that field, as well as dozens of articles. He was the first president of the Society of Jewish Ethics and the co-founder of its journal. Louis Newman completed his B.A. in Hebrew and Philosophy and his M.A. in Philosophy at the University of Minnesota, and received his Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Brown University.  Throughout his career, hundreds of students and colleagues have attested to the profound impact he had on their learning and their lives as a gifted teacher and as a trusted advisor and mentor. Diverse Thinking Different Learning
Ep. 167: From Surviving to Thriving: A Mom's Hierarchy of Needs and Well-Being with Leslie Forde

Diverse Thinking Different Learning

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 9, 2024 39:06

Many parents, particularly moms, feel like taking care of your health and well-being only comes after your family's needs are met. That essentially means that there's no time left for any form of self-care. But today's guest discusses how we can take better care of ourselves and in doing so, take better care of the ones we love. Leslie Forde is the CEO and Founder of Mom's Hierarchy of Needs®. Her business provides evidence-based tools for moms to reclaim time from the never-done list for well-being. And she helps employers retain caregivers. Over 3,500 parents have participated since March of 2020 in the Mom's Hierarchy of Needs research study - the longest running study of its kind about the pandemic's ongoing impact on the work/life, care, and wellness needs of parents.   Show Notes: [2:45] - Leslie returned to work after a second maternity leave and didn't learn the importance of a mom's hierarchy of needs until she completely burned out. [4:19] - When she went back to work, she felt like the answer was to just work “harder.” [5:26] - In hindsight, there were a lot of signs that she was not okay. Everyone was flourishing except for her. [7:46] - Mom's Hierarchy of Needs has self-care at the top. But the reason we don't spend time on this is because the other things are never done. [10:28] - If you think that you will start something for yourself when something else is done, you will never start. [11:58] - Health problems for moms often don't show up until later in life and can be attributed to ignoring self-care practices. [14:10] - Leslie shares a story about making cookies and how a hobby can turn into something stressful. [15:51] - Your health and well-being is of equal importance to your children's health and well-being. [16:55] - Consequences of ignoring health are gradual and it could feel easier to put it off compared to more immediate consequences of focusing on your family. [18:38] - Perfection is not critical. Be flexible and find a set of practices that work for you. [19:59] - Mom-guilt is real and it is a heavy weight. [21:57] - Navigating the health and unique needs of a neurodiverse child is huge and a significant amount of work. [23:08] - Awareness and education is improving and is better than it's ever been. But the systems in place are still not designed to help those who learn and think differently. [25:12] - Give yourself achievable goals that will make you feel the success of accomplishing work that needs to be done, but in more manageable ways. [26:12] - Guilt can be paralyzing, depressing, and decelerating. [27:36] - Self-care doesn't mean a spa day. It could mean a good night's sleep or a healthy meal. [29:03] - Find the resources that will help you. Your commitment is not to solve the problem. You don't have to do it alone. [30:32] - Pick something from the top of Mom's Hierarchy of Needs and make it a habit. [33:37] - If you can create a routine out of something, it will relieve a lot of the mental load of maintaining it. [36:46] - Defer, eliminate, outsource, or spouse source things that are too much to manage at once.   About Our Guest: Leslie has used research to inform growth and innovation strategy for over 20 years. Most recently, she held leadership positions at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Care.com and CSpace, an Omnicom market research agency. And for the past decade, she's focused on media and technology for the childcare, eldercare, mental health, and education sectors. In this episode of The You-est You, Julie Reisler talks to a reiki master and teacher who shares her insights and tips on how to find the best reiki course or teacher for you.   Reiki is a spiritual practice that can help you heal and balance your body, mind, and soul. It can also enhance your intuition, which is essential for your survival and well-being. Reiki is not a religion, but a way of connecting with the universal life force energy that flows through all living beings.   You will learn: What reiki is, how it works, and what are the benefits of practicing it regularly. How to choose a reiki course or teacher that suits your needs and goals. You should look for a teacher who has a daily self-reiki practice, who teaches live and interactive classes, who provides enough practice time and feedback, who charges a reasonable fee, and who makes you feel comfortable, safe, and aligned. How to trust your intuition and listen to your inner guidance when selecting a reiki course or teacher. You should follow your heart and your gut, and avoid any pressure or manipulation from others. How to prepare for your reiki course or session, what to expect, and what to do after. You should be open, relaxed, and receptive, and drink plenty of water, eat healthy food, and rest well.   To learn more about reiki and Pamela Miles' courses, programs and community, go to reikiinmedicine.org. You can also read the book, Reiki: A Comprehensive Guide by Pamela Miles, or watch the documentary, Reiki: The Healing Touch by William Lee Rand.   Meet Pamela Miles:   Pamela Miles is an internationally renowned Reiki master and the foremost pioneer introducing Reiki practice to conventional medicine. Over the course of nearly four decades of experience with this spiritual practice, she's collaborated on various projects with academic medical centers including Yale, Harvard and the National Institutes of Health. Pamela has been published in peer-reviewed medical journals, including the preeminent Journal of the American College of Cardiology. She's also brought her insight to corporate outlets such as Google and Unilever.   Pamela's expertise in Reiki and integrative health has been featured in mainstream media including The Dr. Oz Show, NBC, CBS, CNN, FOX, The Atlantic, Forbes, US News & World Report, New York Magazine, Allure, and Self. She is also the author of the award-winning REIKI: A Comprehensive Guide, the only Reiki book written for the mainstream public and healthcare professionals.   When she's not helping her private clients strengthen their health and well-being, she's championing Protect Reiki, her initiative to defend the public's freedom to practice Reiki as they choose. Pamela is a mother of two adult children and is based in New York City.   You-est You Resources & Goodies   See below for all kinds of free tools, resources, programs and goodies to help you become your YOU-EST YOU!   A Free Toolset To Design Your Best Life   This stunning free toolset is a 7-day workbook (25 pages full) of powerful mindset practices, grounding meditations (and audio), a new beautiful time management system and template to set your personalized schedule for your best productivity, a personalized energy assessment, and so much more. From Jen Golbeck, the “internet's dog mom” behind the massive social media platform The Golden Ratio, and award-winning science writer Stacey Colino, comes THE PUREST BOND: Understanding the Human-Canine Connection. This science-based, comprehensive exploration of the profound bond between humans and dogs is perfect for fans of Our Dogs, Ourselves and What the Dog Knows. Dogs have been considered people's best friend for thousands of years, but never has the relationship between humans and their canine companions been as vitally important as it is today. With all of the seismic shifts in today's world, rates of anxiety and depression have been skyrocketing, and people have been turning to their dogs for solace and stability. Amidst these dire realities, something wonderful has taken shape. In the United States alone, dog adoptions doubled during the COVID-19 pandemic. As people have brought furry friends into their lives for the first time or seized this opportunity to deepen the connections they already have, they are looking to understand how owning a dog can change their lives. The Purest Bond explores the benefits our dogs can have on our physical, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being, often without our realizing it. Weaving together groundbreaking research and touching real-life stories, THE PUREST BOND explores not just the social benefits of owning a dog but the science of how dogs improve our emotional and physical health, mental acuity, and our ability to focus and absorb information. Most importantly, they remind us of what's right in the world—love, trust, affection, playtime, fresh air, and sunshine—even when so much feels wrong. [06:56] Sugar and Health: Is Sugar Bad? -       The insidious impact of sugar on health occurs gradually at a cellular level, leading to significant consequences over time. -       Type 2 diabetes increasingly affects adolescents and children due to excessive sugar consumption. -       Mothers play a crucial role in shaping family eating habits and influencing children's diets, underscoring the importance of educating parents about the dangers of sugar. -       The comparison between consuming a single cigarette and consuming sugary treats highlights that the cumulative effects of sugar intake over time can be just as harmful, leading to obesity, diabetes, and related health problems. -       Understanding the concept of "area under the curve" for both cigarettes and sugar intake emphasizes the importance of being mindful of the frequency and duration of these habits to prevent long-term health issues. [22:07] How can parents help promote children's healthy eating habits? -   Parents' behavior significantly influences their children's dietary habits and health choices, even during the teenage years. -   Adolescence represents a crucial period for brain growth and imprinting behavior, making it essential for parents to model and encourage healthy choices. -   Consider the long-term effects of high insulin levels from a young age, and prioritize health and prevention over convenience, especially in the context of rising chronic diseases in younger individuals. -   When safe and well-researched, exploring ketogenic diets may offer potential benefits for brain health, reducing the risk of certain diseases and positively impacting overall well-being. [34:29] Ketogenic Diet: Why Is It Not Talked About Enough -   Blaming a single entity for the lack of acceptance of ketogenic diets overlooks the multifaceted factors influencing dietary choices and health recommendations. -   Society often favors instant gratification and easy solutions, contrasting with the gradual and iterative nature of adopting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. -   Achieving long-term health benefits through a ketogenic diet involves ongoing adjustments and understanding that setbacks are part of the journey. [41:13] What is the most effective way for insulin resistance? -       Clients often blame themselves when results aren't immediate or think hidden issues like hormones are to blame, but the truth lies in a deeper understanding of insulin resistance. -       Recognize that combating insulin resistance requires consistent effort, adapting eating patterns, and embracing a holistic approach to health. -       Focusing on portion control can aid in sustaining weight loss and achieving health goals. Heat exposure can also contribute to mitochondrial health and weight management, particularly in individuals who struggle with traditional exercise. -       Prioritize dietary adjustments and timing, followed by controlled portions, before introducing more intense exercise or resistance training. [1:00:13] Are Sardines Good for You? Facts About Sardines That You Should Know! -       Incorporating sardines in fasting strategies enhances satiety and aids in portion control, supporting individuals on their health journey. -       Sardines, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, deliver exceptional satiety, making them valuable to peak brain performance and overall well-being. -       Sardines offer a practical, sustainable, and globally accessible source of nutrition, serving as a potent tool for long-term health improvements. -       Despite the strong smell of sardines, finding creative ways to prepare and cook them, such as air frying, can mitigate odor concerns and make them a more palatable choice. [12:06] What is the Red Blood Cells' Function and importance to your body? ·    Red blood cells contain hemoglobin, a combination of heme and globin, comprising cholesterol, protein, and iron. ·    Red blood cells only have one major function, it's to carry hemoglobin throughout the body. ·    Hemoglobin then, in turn, carries oxygen around and delivers it to various parts of the human body. ·    An important part of the lungs in your body's oxygen exchange are the alveoli. They facilitate the exchange of the air you breathe in and out, oxygen and carbon dioxide, with the red blood cells, which transport it throughout the body. ·    Predicting diseases will be made clear through observing these blood cells and them having an “enemy.” Glucose controls when and where blood circulation goes. ·    The problem comes when that glucose molecule sticks to the hemoglobin, leaving no space for more oxygen to get carried by the RBC. This is called glycation.  [23:53] Does Blood Donation Really Help with Diabetes? ·    Donating blood doesn't help your chances of having a chronic illness. It's more complicated than that. ·    Donating your blood decreases your hemoglobin and hematocrit quickly. That will signal your bone marrow to release red blood cells even though they're not ready to be released. ·    Ultimately, it's a short-term solution to a long-time problem. You aren't actually going to change anything permanently; everything will just go right back to where it was. ·    Solving symptoms is fine, but you must eliminate the problem's main root. Usually, these are just the result of a problem with high blood glucose levels.  [41:54] Is your blood sugar higher in the morning? Here's what you can do ·    We live in a world where processed food is easy. It's easier to prepare and eat and has a long shelf life. ·    The less processed food you get, the better it is for you. ·    Having a long eating window will also cause problems for you. It's caused by feeling full because of all the sugars floating around your body. You must eat food with high fat and protein to alleviate this concern. ·    The worst thing you can do is to eat late at night, especially past 7 P.M. Your body's ability to process sugars isn't as functional as it is during the day, causing the food you eat to be kept as sugar more. ·    The way to fix morning sugars is to remove the last meal you ate the day before. If you have a habit of skipping breakfast and having lunch and dinner, it's better to get breakfast and lunch and then skip dinner entirely.
