I think failing to give a good presentation is an incredibly missed opportunity. You have everything: a captive audience, borrowed credibility, and a place to deliver your message your way. But there are a lot of places where your presentation can fall down. Most people will focus on not capturing the audience quickly enough, or pacing. Maybe not rehearsing. But what about your slides? The actual visual part of your presentation. The visual storytelling is as important as the words you deliver. Not enough context? Your audience is lost. Too much text? Your audience is too busy reading to hear your message. That's why I decided to have Emily Schneider on the show. She's a visual storyteller, and her canvas is PowerPoint presentations. Intrigued? I was too. Want to hear a longer, ad-free version of this episode where I take Emily's advice and roast my own recent talk slides? Become a member of Streamlined Solopreneur Accelerated. Top TakeawaysStart with the Audience: Understand who your audience is and what you want them to think, feel, and do by the end of your presentation. This is crucial for making a meaningful impact.Craft a Compelling Story: Begin with the end in mind and structure your presentation around a clear storytelling arc. Focus on the challenge, benefits, and reinforcing the main message.Balance Images and Words: Use simple words or short sentences, and stylize your slides to naturally guide your audience through your story. This approach is effective not just for live presentations but also for pitch decks and emailed presentations.Show NotesEmily Schneider4 Simple Tips for Impactful PresentationsThe Go GiverWant to be a Better Speaker? Show Notes: 7 Tips to Become a Better Speaker #7 - Record Everything Any time you get the opportunity to speak, especially early in your career as a speaker, record it. Preferably a video recording. But at minimum, get an audio recording. Why? Because nothing will help you improve as a speaker than seeing and hearing yourself speak. PERIOD. Here are two quick thoughts... First, be prepared because watching yourself present can be brutal, especially early on. So give yourself some grace and realize your speaking is a work in progress. And most importantly, don't give up. Everything worth doing is worth doing poorly at first. Second, don't make recording complicated or distracting. Just set up your smartphone on a table or tripod and hit record. Or have someone else take care of the recording for you. Bottom line, if you make things too complicated, you won't do it. And if it's too distracting, you won't be focused on your presentation. I hope these 7 simple tips for becoming a better speaker have been helpful. Speaker Mastermind Community: Click here to find out more about the Paid to Speak Accelerator Community (aka Mastermind Community) and to put your name on our Waiting List. Show Notes: 7 Tips to Become a Better Speaker #6 - Look People in the Eye Why Is This Important? It helps you make personal connections with audience members. In fact, it's probably the simplest thing you can do to enhance the impact of your presentation and persuade audience members to your point of view. Why Is This Challenging? Looking into another person's eyes, especially when you're on stage talking to a group of people, just feels awkward. And if you're nervous, it feels even more awkward. How to Improve Your Eye Contact? Remember that you are speaking to individuals and not just a group. Find audience members who are engaged and are already looking at you. Sustain eye contact with each individual long enough to make a connection, then move on. Three to five seconds is usually a good guideline. Avoid looking at people who you can tell feel awkward with eye contact. That will feel more like a stare-down than eye contact. Be prepared. It's practically impossible to make eye contact when you're in your head trying to remember your presentation. Finally, here are the tips we've covered so far: #1 - Know Your Topic #2 - Capture New Ideas #3 - Get Your Reps In #4 - Focus on Serving #5 - Create an Experience for Your Audience Episode Resources 9 Ways to Get Paid as a Speaker (FREE Resource) 5 Keys to Create a Speech That Pays (FREE Resource) Got questions? Submit them here Thank You for Listening! Speaker Mastermind Community: Click here to find out more about the Paid to Speak Accelerator Community (aka Mastermind Community) and to put your name on our Waiting List. Show Notes: 7 Tips to Become a Better Speaker #5 - Create an Experience for Your Audience In the previous episodes of this series, I mentioned that if you want to serve your audience well, it's best to create a speech that is both enjoyable and educational. Yet the truth is that the vast majority of speakers today focus almost exclusively on delivering content. They might throw in a joke or two and maybe even share a short illustration, but most of the time, it's content, content, content. Have you ever sat through a 60 or 90-minute presentation that is all content? By the end, you probably feel like you've been sprayed with a firehose. What's worse is that you don't walk away remembering anything specific because anything worth remembering was crowded out by the rest of the content. It's just too much! So how can you avoid overwhelming your audience with straight content? Create an experience! If you want to become a better speaker, you need to realize that less in more when it comes to presenting. So instead of cramming more content into their presentations, they look for ways to make their content sticky (aka so memorable that it sticks with audiences after the presentation). In fact, instead of outlining their speech in the same way they would outline a research paper, they develop their speech like a scriptwriter storyboarding a movie. They ask themselves questions like: What is the one big idea that I want my audience to understand? How can I make that idea relevant? How can I make it come alive? Can I take the audience on a journey where they discover this idea for themselves? How can I create an experience that allows my audience to laugh or feel emotions along the way? Here's the bottom line... Don't just deliver content. Create an experience that is enjoyable, educational, and best of all, sticky. Most decision-makers won't hire you until they know, like, and trust you. Audiences won't listen to you unless you build some level of rapport and trust with them. And nothing will destroy your speaking career quicker than breaking trust with decision-makers and/or audiences. So, if you want to become a better speaker, how do you build great relationships with decision-makers and audiences? Focus on serving! For decision-makers, be an easy speaker to work with. Make them look like a hero for hiring you. Deliver on your promises. And for audiences, create an experience that is both enjoyable and educational. You want them to walk away from your presentation feeling better than when they walked in. Speaker Mastermind Community: Click here to find out more about the Paid to Speak Accelerator Community (aka Mastermind Community) and to put your name on our Waiting List. Show Notes: 7 Tips to Become a Better Speaker #3 - Get Your Reps In (AKA Practice) Practice starts with developing great content. Work hard on putting together a great presentation. Then, once you feel like your content is solid, practice the mechanics of how to deliver a great presentation. You can practice in front of the mirror or make a video recording of yourself...whatever works best for you. But here's something you won't hear from most speaking coaches or trainers... If you want to become a better speaker, do NOT practice to become more polished. Audiences can spot a fake a mile away. Instead, practice to become a better communicator who authentically cares about what you are presenting. You've been working hard to grow, learn, and develop as a Thought Leader in your area of expertise. So when you get the opportunity to speak to an audience, you don't want to come across as a fake, overly-polished presenter. Instead, you want to be a real person who is seen as passionate about the thoughts and ideas you are sharing. Or, to put it another way, you want to speak from the head and the heart. Believe it or not, this takes practice. Lots of practice. So while you never want to wing your presentation, you also don't want to be over-polished either. It takes practice to truly be yourself as a speaker. But...if you don't capture the ideas you discover, Tip #1 is useless. Years ago, someone gave me advice that was so simple, yet it has become one of the most important habits I practice as a speaker. Here's the advice: When You Think It, Ink It. Whenever I find something that fits my topic, I write it down immediately. But I don't just write it down. I make sure to save it in a place where I can find it later. For some people, that place is a journal or notebook. For me, it's Evernote. I have a speaking folder in Evernote where I capture all the ideas about my speaking topic that pop into my brain. (BTW, the main reason I like Evernote is it's much easier to search for what I've recorded than it is in a journal or notebook.) But no matter what system you use, never forget... When You Think It, Ink It. Did you know that Netflix is also a gaming platform now? That Apple make TV shows? That Disney own a number of YouTube channels without the Disney branding? It's because they know what Steve Woodruff knows. If you're a podcaster, you might think the competition is other podcasters. If you make movies, you might think the competition is another movie. You'd be wrong. See, what Netflix, Apple, Disney, and Steve know, is that the competition is everything. People are assaulted every day by stimuli, and if you want to cut through all of the noise, you need to stand out by being an effective communication designer. And there's no better person to tell us how to do that than the King of Clarity himself. Plus, in the PRO show, we talk about using AI to write books, and Steve's process for writing his latest book, The Point. Top Takeaways The average American spends 7-10 hours per day in front of a screen. On top of that, we see 4,000-10,000 ads every day. In other words, there is a lot of stuff competing for our attention.  You want to be pigeonholed! Instead of an “Elevator Pitch,” which sounds stuff and outdated, Steve prefers the term “Memory Dart.” What's one sentence you can say to people so they know exactly what you do?  If you're not communicating clearly to an outsider, you're not communicating clearly. You want to make sure your copy (website, LinkedIn profile, Twitter) makes sense to people who don't know your work well. Show Notes Steve Woodruff Steve in Linkedin Want to be a Better Speaker? I'm a little skeptical when someone wants to sell me something.Back in college, I served tables at a steak and rib house and lemme tell you: I could rack up a receipt. Oh, I could not only sell you on the best steak, but I could have you upsize it, add on a loaded baked potato, and convince you that you couldn't leave without trying the famous banana cream pie, served in a mason jar.  I knew exactly what to say, exactly how to convince you that the loaded baked potato would uplevel your entire meal, and exactly how to tell you to use the leftovers the next day so you felt like you were getting at least two meals out of one. I was so good that I was employee of the month for the entire organization of steak and rib houses - not just the place where I worked. But here's the thing: I was (and still am) a vegetarian. I never once tasted the steak. I just knew exactly how to talk about it.Why am I telling you this? I believe that communicating - whether it be on stages, team meetings, or business negotiations - is one of the very best ways to grow your business. “So I think that when people can get that one word that hits them in the heart and in the gut, that's what makes a good podcaster. When it's just information, it's information. And that's where we often think, well, ‘I'll just read the blog.' You know, ‘I'll go get a book on that.' ‘I'll look it up.' You know, ‘I'll just do a Google search and find it.' But if someone is adding something to it that we haven't thought about, and it puts a feeling to it and a story, and it makes us come alive, that's what makes a good podcaster.” -- Elaine Clark This week's episode is the second half of my conversation with best-selling author, voiceover expert, and prolific voice actor Elaine Clark as we talk about the power of storytelling, what makes someone an expert, and the importance of style in everything from company meetings to ASMR.As always, if you have questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. "There are a lot of podcasters out there that have a podcast," she says, "but you have to wade through to get to the good stuff." We also talk about streaming shows and the new golden age of television and how binge-watching owes its success to the power of narratives and the importance of emotional storytelling. "People are anxious to tell a story," she explains, "and people really want to hear more of a story and have someone emotionally connected with it." The Wrong NotesElaine tells us more about how the accessibility of podcasting, for creators and listeners, has helped it continue to thrive even after the height of the pandemic and offers advice on everything from the right equipment to the right vocal exercises. "You have to think of it like going to the gym," she says. "If I went to the gym and lifted some weights for a while, that will last me the rest of my life – if only." We talk about stepping outside our comfort zones and how breaking out of a rut can be the key to finding your best voice. "That's how," she says, "through patterns and how I listen to someone, I realize whether they're stuck in a place and different ways they can change, and that makes a huge difference. Because it's usually their vocal range is fine, but they just got stuck on the wrong notes." Making It Their IdeaAs our discussion wraps up, we discuss the future of audio in the digital age, from social media to branding opportunities. “In society,” Elaine notes, “the visuals mean so much. But over the phone or in podcasts, the voice has become just as important, if not more,” She also offers her advice, gleaned from her work with both professional clients and her own children, on how to persuade people...

“Most people speak with three different rhythms in a sentence. So if I'm not thinking about it, I have certain parts that are gonna be faster and other parts where maybe I'm thinking about, they'll be slower, and then something in the middle. That's what keeps our attention with that melody, that melodic change that's happening there.” -- Elaine Clark My next guest is the author of two best-selling books, There's Money Where Your Mouth Is and Voice-Overs For Podcasting, the creator of two voice and diction apps (Activate Your Voice and Adding Melody To Your Voice), and the host and creator of the speech communication podcast Real Talking Tips. She's an actor, director, and producer in a wide range of entertainment and business genres, from video games to business events. Over the past forty years, she's coached C-Suite executives, newscasters, television hosts, podcasters, multimedia journalists, presenters, sports reporters, salespeople, and narrators. She specializes in developing a “tune of speaking” through word focus, movement, dynamics, tempo variations, storytelling, and musicality. Her name is Elaine Clark, and I'm looking forward to her perspective on how to be a better speaker. I would so appreciate that. The Musicality of WordsAs the episode begins, we talk about Elaine's early memories of sound and how the variety of accents she heard growing up in Louisiana, California, and Germany led to her lifelong fascination with the cadence and melody of speech. "So I thought," she says, recalling all the different speech styles she encountered as a child, "'oh, there's the flowing and then there's the staccato.' So that was also what brought to mind the musicality of words." We also talk about storytelling and how it became her guiding principle when it comes to voice direction. "It's the theater of the mind. It's just like podcasting," Elaine says. "The way I work with people is, you see it first, you feel it, and then you speak." Solving a ProblemOur conversation focuses on storytelling and how Elaine uses it to guide the relationship between the speaker and listener. "Storytelling is a way of establishing authority," she explains. "When we know where everything is located, when we know how we feel about the various people that we're retelling the story about, people get into that story." She tells us how she helps clients communicate with more confidence and to stay focused on the true purpose and value of...

There's an old adage that more people are afraid of public speaking than of death, meaning that at a funeral, more people would rather be in the casket than giving the eulogy. I suspect that when push came to shove, most people would actually choose the eulogy, but that's beside the point. Public speaking is hard. And truth be told, most people are bad at it…if you feel that way, don't fret. Mike Pacchione is here to help. He's coached people like James Clear, Amy Porterfield, and Donald Miller on public speaking, and today, he's teaching us his best stuff. Top Takeaways: The greatest gift you can give your audience is to be completely present with them. That means don't memorize! Know your stuff, practice your talk, and be with them in the room! Most people say too much. Embrace silence and be concise. Silence lets a point land, and communicates to your audience, “hey. That was important. Remember it.” The best speeches are not the ones you've given the most. Back to the first point, they are the ones where you've practiced and are present for the audience. There's a lot of talk about the benefits of meditation, not only in helping us cope with the challenges we face in modern life, but also the physical benefits that may give us longer lives and better overall health.  That's why a lot more people are now meditating, and I'm one of them. Until now, I've dabbled in it, but one of my goals this year was to go all in on meditation and do it every day. So, I enrolled on a 10-day virtual  meditation retreat, which I'm halfway through at the time of recording. Currently, I'm meditating for two hours a day, one in the morning and one in the evening, which is a challenge. I'm doing this for two key reasons, firstly to improve my focus and secondly to get a stronger connection to my intuition.  But the big question I wanted to explore in this episode is whether introducing meditation into your life could help you become a better speaker?  Enjoy! What you'll discover: What meditation actually is. The different types of meditation. How meditation can affect fear of speaking. The ways that meditation can help you create your talk content. How you can get stopped from fulfilling your potential and how meditation can prevent that. The extra meditation practice that can supercharge your performance. How meditation can improve your connection with your audience.    Leave a rating or review for The Speaking Club (Take a photo of your review, email it to me at sarah@saraharcher.co.uk and get a free e-copy of my book Cracking Speech Mate - How to Use Humour to Make You an Amazing Speaker!)
