(...) En el año 1976 la banda Spyro Gyra llamó la atención de Lenny Silver, propietario de una cadena de tiendas discográficas locales, así como de Amherst Records. Lenny les ofreció un acuerdo de distribución. Berckenstein y el batería y productor Richard Calandra alquilaron un pequeño local y un mezclador de 16 pistas y con eso y pocos recursos mas, editaron, dos años más tarde, 500 copias del autodenominado “Spyro Gyra”, su primer LP y el disco que hemos decidido compartir con vosotros en el tejado de hoy. El mismo Beckenstein se encargó de repartir esas 500 copias con su vehículo por todas estaciones de radio y las tiendas de discos cercanas. De repente se produjo el milagro y la pieza de apertura, “Shaker Song” se convirtió en un éxito en las radios locales. Con tan rudimentaria producción “Spyro Gyra” conseguiría vender 70.000 copias de su primer trabajo. Al año siguiente se encontraban ya grabando el que sería su segundo disco, el superventas “Morning Dance”. El resto ya es historia. (...) Danielle Shockey has two decades of public education experience and is in her second year as CEO of the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana. The two factors are coming together with the recent announcement of the organization being a program partner in an all-girls school focused on STEM education. It’s a natural combination. The Girl Scouts have a rich STEM history and an ever-growing STEM focus. Our state and country have a desperate need for more young girls interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to become professionals with careers in those industries. Keyboardist Tom Schuman, original member of Spyro Gyra, has written or co-written over 50 of the bands songs throughout the years.  The jazz fusion band has sold over 10 million albums, since forming in the mid-1970's.  Spyro Gyra has been nominated for 12 GRAMMY awards, throughout the years.  As a solo artist, Tom has released 7 albums including his latest, Live At Marians Jazz Room.  Award-winning program director Ray White  catches up with Tom backstage during September of 2015, to talk about Spyro Gyra's current release The Rhinebeck Sessions and contributions from the band, recording the album.  In our "showcase segment," Lisa Davis features Boz Scaggs, whose latest album Out Of The Blues reached #1 on Billboard's Top Blues Albums chart.

As one of the most talented musicians in the Pikes Peak region Tony Exum, Jr. brings to mind the soulfulness of a David Sanborn, the sultry sounds of the late great Grover Washington, Jr. and silky smoothness of the late George Howard. We welcome Tony to Talking Smooth Jazz to talk about his current cd, Finally. The co-leader of Spyro Gyra, Tom Schuman is an smooth jazz keyboardist and an arranger. We welcome Tom to the show with a new solo project, Reflections Over Time.

The Detroit bred, Los Angeles-based saxophonist burst on the jazz scene after an impressive win at the 2007 Capital Jazz New Artist Challenge in Columbia, Maryland. Since then Justin was asked to join Boney James, Brian Culbertson, Kim Waters and other jazz stars during the six-day Capital Jazz SuperCruise. The versatile 28-year old performer debuted onto the national circuit with his solo album On The Way. The album features collaborations with guitarists Paul Brown, Tim Bowman, and keyboardist Tom Schuman of Spyro Gyra.
