Ten years ago, international companies typically needed to monitor national security developments only if they were doing business with a U.S. government agency or operating in higher risk jurisdictions or sectors such as military or dual-use goods. Over the past decade, however, Western governments—led by the United States—have expanded the use of sanctions, export controls, import restrictions and investment laws to more jurisdictions and more sectors, requiring nearly every multinational company to be attuned to and anticipate developments in these laws and regulations, including those seeking to prevent espionage, theft of trade secrets, cyber attacks and other similar threats. In addition, the governments of nations such as Russia and China have enacted an array of sanctions, export and other control measures, which can subject multinational companies to highly challenging situations with conflicting sanctions regimes. In this environment, companies and financial institutions must address a range of national security risks and considerations when establishing or executing their business operations, legal decision-making and compliance programs. In this podcast, former federal prosecutors Sharon Cohen Levin, Nicky Friedlander, Tony Lewis and Amanda Houle discuss major developments in national security enforcement, including the Department of Justice's increased focus on this area. Sharon led the Money Laundering and Asset Forfeiture Unit in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York for two decades; Nicky is a former Chief of the Complex Frauds and Cybercrime Unit in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York; Tony was the Deputy Chief of the Terrorism and Export Crimes Section in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California; and Amanda was Co-Chief of the National Security & International Narcotics Unit in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.

They're closing the digital divide for rural America. The truth is, is as they do that, as they bring the better broadband, they're really opening themselves up for competition on the business voice side of the house. The challenge is that, “Once that big, fast broadband is in place, it's very easy for larger voice -only competitors to come in and really take that phone revenue that they were hoping for when they built out this broadband infrastructure.” In this podcast, Bob discusses how ClearlyIP can help. “We believe that we can come in, we can partner with the local exchange carriers, help them keep their phone numbers, help them keep their customers.” Bob discusses how ClearlyIP can partner with the local carriers to provide customers with all their needs, sate of the art solutions, but solutions which will allow the local carriers to stay within their more limited resources. Geographically vast, in many cases, many of these carriers serve small populations. The economies of scale, the geography and the distances, demand robust solutions but at cost effective pricing. “What we are helping them do is keep that phone revenue, keep that voice revenue along with keeping that broadband revenue to make that investment pay off.” CEO, Tony Lewis will join Bob in booth 613-615. STIR/SHAKEN: understanding the basics, how it works and how get compliant, ClearlyIP Podcast:  we're diving deep into the world of STIR/SHAKEN “It's not supposed to stop spam calling,” says Tony Lewis, CEO of ClearlyIP. “That's a myth. It's supposed to give the industry a way of quickly tracing the spam call to see who originated it.”  In today's podcast, we're diving deep into the world of STIR/SHAKEN, a technology that's making waves in the telecommunications industry with Tony Lewis, who is an expert in STIR/SHAKEN technology and assists telecommunication service providers in achieving compliance. If you've ever wondered about those annoying spam calls or the legitimacy of incoming phone calls, you're in the right place. We'll break it all down for you today. STIR and SHAKEN are acronyms that stand for "Secure Telephony Identity Revisited" and "Signature-based Handling of Asserted information using toKENs." These are two standards that work together to combat caller ID spoofing and robocalls, a problem that has plagued phone users for years. Tony walks us through how this process works. Tony also explores the limits of the system, as currently practiced. ClearlyIP offers STIR/SHAKEN in their SIP Trunking offerings. ClearlyIP Telecom Resellers and Partners sell trunking to customers as an agent or reseller. Either way ClearlyIP assists them with being STIR/SHAKEN compliant. Chicago-based artist Tony Lewis's practice focuses on the relationship between semiotics and language to confront social and political topics such as race, power, communication, and labor. Lewis creates drawings using graphite, pencil and paper, mediums the artist uses to trace and develop abstract narratives and reflections on the notion of the gestural. By pushing the boundaries of drawing and the possibilities of abstraction, he expands the use of the “material” of language. He currently has a solo exhibition at the Orange County Museum of Art/OCMA.He and Zuckerman discuss labor and work, changing the way you think about making art, saying yes, listening to music on repeat, “keep going,” things that exist outside of art, motivational language, caring enough, nicknames, and the precision of human nature!

These developments come at a time when U.S. enforcement agencies appear to be increasingly focused on corporate compliance.    Topics include the DOJ's focus on data analytics in testing the effectiveness of a company's compliance function and culture, using compensation systems to provide incentives or disciplinary measures to improve compliance, and on companies' use of electronic messages on personal devices.   For more information about compliance programs, read Brendan and Tony's chapter in the Latin Lawyer Guide to Corporate Compliance, “Developing a Robust Compliance Programme in Latin America.”
