This week, our "Best Breakout Album" series continues with the 1976 hit album by Boz Scaggs, "Silk Degrees." Like our other artists so far in this topic, it took quite a while for Boz to break out; but he finally did with this smooth-sounding album. With hits like "It's Over," "What Can I Say?," "Lido Shuffle," and "Lowdown," "Silk Degrees" received a Grammy nomination for Best Album of 1976 and is still a best-selling LP/CD/Downloads, etc. to this day. Next week, Frank and I look at the 1977 Breakout Album, "The Grand Illusion" by Styx. Enjoy!
Our Best Breakout Album this week, as we start the month of June '26, is "Hi Infidelity" by REO Speedwagon! It took a while for this Windy City group to find huge commercial success, but Epic Records stuck with them, and in November of 1980 came what would be a 10x Platinum Album, featuring hits like "Keep on Loving You," "Take it on the Run" and "In Your Letter." The album spent a record 15-weeks at the top of the Billboard Album Chart, becoming the LP of the year in 1981. Next week, Frank and I will take a look at another Breakout Album, "Silk Degrees" by Boz Scaggs. Enjoy!

It's your chance to hear some of the great album rock from the 60s and 70s mostly. We've been doing these programs since late 2019 and have covered lots a ground. You know and I know that we've just scratched the surface of recorded rock, so the new shows keep coming. The reruns aren't bad either. They can be heard on your favorite podcast app. Just search for Tales Vinyl Tells. Today we're going to say thanks and farewell to Marianne Faithfull, Jesse Colin Young of the Youngbloods and vibraphonist Roy Ayers Jr. The music under me is Roy Ayres with Herbie Mann at the 1969 Harlem summer of soul extravaganza with a song cowritten by Isaac Hayes. Those three have entered the room next door, as Henry Diltz coined the phrase. You also get some of the blues with Boz Scaggs and Duane Allman, together. So these are the stories that songwriters and artists want to convey to you. These are the Tales Vinyl Tells. Thanks for listening today. My email is talesvinyltells@gmail.com. You can hear a Tales Vinyl Tells radio program when it streams live on RadioFreeNashville.org and here. We do that at 5 PM central time Wednesdays. We've got a massive show lined up for you this week. My partner in crime Paul Michael is back in the studio to present his legendary Blues Driver segment, and he is not alone. We've got a cameo from someone very special indeed, so you'll want to keep your ears pinned back for that one. Along with the guest spot, we've got all your regular favourite features locked in. The music is top tier from start to finish. We are kicking off with the heavyweights, bringing you tracks from Eric Clapton, Joe Bonamassa, and Buddy Guy, alongside the soulful brilliance of Mike Finnegan and Boz Scaggs. The groove stays tight with the Chris Corcoran band, Jump 66, and the legendary tone of Otis Grand. We are also diving into some classic territory with Traffic, before sliding into a fantastic run of modern masters. You will hear The Paul Michael Band doing their thing, the brilliant guitar work of Will Johns, and the deep pocket of Pat McDougall. We keep the energy climbing with Eugene Hideaway Bridges, the powerhouse Tedeschi Trucks Band, and a killer collaboration featuring the Stevie Watts Organ Trio with Alice Armstrong. Rounding out an absolute belter of an episode, we've got the gritty sounds of Mike Zito, the old-school cool of Golden ‘Big' Wheeler, and the beautiful acoustic touch of Dove and BoWeevil. It is a packed house, a special guest, and two hours of the finest music on the planet.

Today on part one of this interview on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Grammy-winning musician Leo Sidran, son of jazz musician, professor, radio host, VH1 TV host and author Ben Sidran. Now if you are a jazz fan, likely you know the name Ben Sidran. In a career that spans more than 50 years, Ben Sidran has had a truly remarkable career as a solo performer and has somehow performed with, recorded with or produced pretty much everyone in and out of jazz. Like who? How about Steve Miller, Diana Ross, Boz Scaggs, Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, Peter Frampton, Mose Allison and so many more. But as we learn from Leo on this episode, Ben's literate background, his poetic lyrics and his fantastic piano playing make him, we would argue, more than just a musician but more of a national treasure. There is just something about a world class jazz musician who can also write lyrics that make you think, and often times laugh, that just gives you pause. It's a rare talent and Ben Sidran has it. So on this episode we learn about Leo's entre into music. Yes of course it's via his dad but it also involves going on tour with The Steve Miller Band where technology plays a major part in his world on the tour bus. From there we learn how Leo became a songwriter before he could drive, how he was looked after by the Steve Miller Band band members and how it set him up for his first recording date not too long after. Along the way we discuss the importance of merch, Camus, Madison Wisconsin, the importance of having a mother who was a travel agent – and much more than that, why his parents left Los Angeles when Ben's solo career was just getting going and much more. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast and everyone has a story.

"One is the loneliest number that you'll ever doTwo can be as bad as oneIt's the loneliest number since the number one"Please be my number 2 and join me this afternoon, Super Bowl Sunday, for Super Sounds Of The 70's. Stopping by are David Bowie, Boz Scaggs, Pink Floyd, Peter Frampton, Yes, Robin Trower, Renaissance, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Michael Bloomfield, Blues Image, Phil Manzanera, Procol Harum, Mountain, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Chicago, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and Three Dog Night with a brief tribute to Chuck Negron who passed away last week.
In this episode, I sit down with drummer David Northrup for a deep and wide-ranging conversation about groove, longevity, and serving the song. David has built an incredible career by doing precisely that, whether he's playing traditional country, blues, soul, or roots-based music. We start by talking about his current work with Joe Nichols, why it's such a musical and personal fit, and what it means to work for an artist who values authenticity, consistency, and real country music. David shares stories from the road and explains why being a good human is just as important as being a great drummer. We spend time digging into David's early musical influences growing up in central New York, where constant exposure to Motown, singer-songwriter records, pop radio, and classic albums shaped his musical instincts. David talks about learning by listening, studying album credits, and developing a deep appreciation for feel and style long before social media or online tutorials existed. He reflects on how that environment taught him to truly listen, absorb, and respect the music rather than chase trends.David walks through his path to becoming a professional drummer, from starting in school band programs to a pivotal moment when he saw Chuck Mangione perform while in college. That experience helped him realize music was the path he needed to take seriously. We talk about the importance of mentors, including teachers who challenged him when he wasn't ready and supported him when he was, and how discipline, fundamentals, and humility played a massive role in his development. We dive deep into David's years in Nashville, including his first five years building connections, studio work, and eventually landing his long-running gig with Travis Tritt. David explains how Nashville truly is a five-year town, why patience matters, and how preparation and professionalism keep you working once you get the call. We also talk about his deep admiration for drummers like Carlos Vega, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Jordan, Russ Kunkel, and others, and why groove, taste, and feel will always matter more than flash.A significant highlight of the conversation is David's time touring with Boz Scaggs. He shares what it was like to step into such an iconic musical legacy, learn to play with conviction at very low volumes, and work alongside world-class musicians night after night. We talk about why playing the room matters, how restraint can be more complicated than power, and why those lessons apply to every drummer at every level. We also spend time talking about David's solo record Shapes, including how it came together over many years, the musicians involved, and why recording live, organic performances was central to the album's sound. David explains his philosophy of making music that's groove-focused, accessible, and enjoyable for listeners beyond just musicians. We close by discussing teaching, clinics, the importance of shuffle feel, regional time concepts, and the soft skills that help musicians not just get gigs but keep them. It's an honest, thoughtful conversation packed with wisdom for musicians and music lovers alike. To learn more about David, visit his website. "When It Comes To Love" The Massachusetts-born Michael Bluestein got a quick run out of the musical gates and started studying classical piano by age nine, so it's no surprise that the young prodigy's trajectory found him studying at Berklee College of Music. With his B.A. under his belt, Bluestein headed west and wound up in San Francisco, where he spent a decade putting out his own music and working as a venerated sideman and session player with Jon Evans, Will Bernard, Matt Chamberlain, Kitty Margolis, Kenny Washington and Mary Stallings. He has toured and recorded with Shelby Lynn, Boz Scaggs, Stevie Nicks, Burt Bacharach, Enrique Iglesias and Rodger Hodgson. He joined Foreigner in 2008 and that's where he's been ever since, but he's also putting out music under the Beat Glider moniker. Filled with undeniable groove and musical dexterity, Beat Glider is a careening and moving dose of chillwave. Michael talks to us about his San Francisco days and importance of putting oneself out there in the artistic community. www.foreigneronline.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenbooks.com IG + BLUESKY: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

This week, much to Christopher’s chagrin, we do a deep dive into Yacht Rock! We’ll hear from Toto, Steely Dan, Doobie Bros, Christopher Cross, Kenny Loggins, Boz Scaggs, Seals & Crofts, Little River Band, Orleans and… Earth, Wind & Fire? (That last one leads to a spirited disagreement between Tom & Christopher) Among the highlights of this episode: - Michael McDonald explains the evolution of the Doobie Brothers’ sound - Christopher Cross talks about his debut album, which contained several Yacht Rock classics. - Steve Porcaro explains how a group of session players and friends morphed into Toto - Kenny Loggins remembers working with Stevie Nicks on “Whenever I Call You Friend” - Al Stewart deconstructs the story behind his biggest hit, “Year Of The Cat” - Boz Scaggs breaks down “Lido Shuffle” and “Lowdown” - We also hear from the most reluctant group in the Yacht Rock pantheon, Steely Dan, including a bonus cut from the Dan’s only foray into advertising jingles. (We assure you it’s a weird one!) - Plus, interview clips from Little River Band, Orleans, Marc Jordan, Seals & Crofts and more. It’s an episode chock full of artists who are Yachty by nature! Famous Lost Words, hosted by Christopher Ward and Tom Jokic, is heard in more than 100 countries worldwide and on radio stations across Canada, including Newstalk 1010 Toronto, CJAD 800 Montreal, 580 CFRA Ottawa, AM 800 CKLW Windsor, 610 CKTB St Catharines, CFAX Victoria, AM1150 Kelowna and 91x in Belleville. Send us a textJohn McFee formed San Francisco-based band Clover in the '60s. Their first, self-titled album on Fantasy came out in 1970. Several years later, they came to realize some key people in the UK pub rock scene were big fans of their music. Nick Lowe, Brinsley Schwarz and also drummer Pete Thomas, who called Clover to see if they would audition for the up and coming Declan MacManus, who would soon change his name to Elvis Costello. Clover got the gig, backing Elvis on My Aim is True and John McFee's great guitar work is what you hear on all the classic tracks like “Alison” and “The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes”. John also played steel guitar on Van Morrison's Tupelo Honey and St. Dominic's Preview. The long list of artists he's contributed guitar, pedal steel and vocals for includes Carlene Carter, Nick Lowe, Emmylou Harris, The Grateful Dead, and Boz Scaggs. In '79, John McFee was asked to join The Doobie Brothers, replacing Jeff Baxter. He also formed Southern Pacific with Keith Knudsen of the Doobies and Stu Cook of Creedence. In the '90s that trio became Jackdawg. The release of their fantastic self-titled album was delayed due to the death of their manager. A CD release was temporarily available in 2009, but the album was out-of-print for years. That is, until now. "The Very Day" If you're wondering if the Connecticut-born Grammyt Award winning keyboardist and composer grew up with music in the house, the answer is yes--his father Joe Porcaro was a renowned jazz drummer who played with everyone from Sinatra to Stan Getz to Madonna. He also played on hundreds of film and television scores including The Wild Bunch, I Dream Of Jeannie and Edward Scissorhands. He also founded the Percussion Institute of Technology and later the drum department at the Los Angeles Music Academy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angeles_College_of_Music). So, yeah music was the lifesblood of the Porcaro household and at very young ages, Steve and his brothers Mike and Jeff went into the family business. How early of an age you might be wondering? Well, at 17 when most of us were finishing our last year of high school and thinking about who and who wouldn't go with us to the prom, Steve was playing with Gary Wright's band on his 1976 Dream Weaver tour. A year later while most of us were fumbling our way through our first year of college, Steve and his brothers were in Boz Scaggs's band. In 1978 Steve and his brother Jeff along with a few other session playing pals formed their own band called Toto. How'd that work out? Well, 50 million albums later, I'd say it worked out very well, thank you. From "Hold The Line" to "Rosanna" to "Africa" Toto had a procession of hits, became one of the biggest bands on the planet and went on to compose the music for David Lynch's Dune. Steve left the fold in 1987 and went on to compose and score for countless film and television projects, including From Dusk Til Dawn 2, Eddie Murphy's Metro and he did all the original music for Justified. This is just a partial list, by the way--he also wrote the song "Human Nature" which Michael Jackson recorded on his Thriller album, the beginning of several compositions he wrote for Jackson to record. Considered one of the pioneers of analog synths, Porcaro's inventive loops appeared on works by everyone from Elton John to Don Henley. When it comes to artists he's collaborated with, here's a list that's going to knock you out: Hall and Oates, Earth Wind and Fire, Sheena Easton, Diana Ross, Warren Zevon, Jefferson Airplane, Yes, and Michael McDonald. Also a partial list. And speaking of Yes, Porcaro was good friends with Yes's Chris Squire and played in his band The Chris Squire Experiment. Porcaro's second solo album The Very Day is one of 2025's real bright spots. Featuring guest appearances by Stan Lynch, Jude Cole, Michael McDonald, Gardner Cole and his Toto pal David Paich, The Very Day is a stirring song cycle of effortless pop melodies, rootsy grooves and insanely catchy hooks. It's pure magic. And this conversation felt the same. Today on the pod we are beyond excited to be joined by the great Fred Tackett. In addition to being a member of Little Feat, Fred has played with just about everyone you can think of. He was a member of Christian Bob's touring band, did the Lido Shuffle with Boz Scaggs, and strummed along with the Rhinestone Cowboy. But most importantly, for the sake of this show, and this month, he was a great friend of Harry Nilsson's. Fred was generous enough to share a lot of great stories and memories with us over the hour and, needless to say, you don't wanna miss it.

Jude Warne is a rock biographer and music columnist. Jude joined the show a few years back to discuss her book America the Band - An Authorized Biography - an episode I highly recommend. Now she's back with a new book, Lowdown: The Music of Boz Scaggs. If you're a Boz Scaggs fan—or just someone who appreciates a deep dive into music history—Jude Warne's book is a must-read. It's a comprehensive exploration of Scaggs's six-decade career, offering insights into his musical evolution from blues roots to pop stardom. Warne delves into Scaggs's collaborations with artists like the Steve Miller Band and the session musicians who would form Toto, providing insight into the artistry behind albums such as Silk Degrees and Middle Man. In this episode, we discuss Skagg's discography and these collaborations that have shaped his enduring musical legacy.
