Barry, Abigail, and special guest Nick Martino discuss Ozomatli by Ozomatli and sample Sole of the Sea (collaboration with Rockport Brewing Company in Rockport, Massachusetts), Drip, and girl, so confusing from Lost Shoe Brewing and Roasting Company in Marlborough, Massachusetts.Nick is now a four-timer, having previously appeared on our second Christmas bonus episode, Bonus: A Christmas Day's Eve! Original Songs by Our Friends, and both of our live episodes: Bonus: LIVE from Stand Up! Pod Jam 2024: Pops on Hops Friend Exchange (New York Funk Exchange and Able Baker Brewing) and Bonus: LIVE from Stand Up! Pod Jam 2025: Neon Desert Challenge (the latter of which he also produced for us!). Give his previous appearances some love; they are a lot of fun!Nick, in part, chose to assign us this album because of Abigail's beef with He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince as displayed in Jukebox: He's the Drinker, We're the Talkers (DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince and Evil Genius Beer Company). Coincidentally, this album reminded Abigail of a different Derek Hummel, Sr., Jukebox selection, Make Yourself by Incubus, as discussed in Jukebox: Make Your Flight (Incubus and Hell 'n Blazes Brewing Co.).Both DJ Cut Chemist and MC Chali 2na left Ozomatli after this album because their other group, Jurassic 5, was blowing up.We found a great blog with additional information about and clips of Nick's favorite “trumpet battle” between Wynton Marsalis and Trombone Shorty at the House of Blues in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 2009. Evidently, trumpet battles have been going on for over 100 years!Watch Chali 2na and New Orleans-based jazz band Naughty Professor perform Cut Chemist Suite live at the Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 2018!Oh look, more self-promotion! O Le Le names Edie Brickell, whom we have previously reviewed (see Using Honeybees for the Meads [Edie Brickell & New Bohemians and B. Nektar]). We could think of at least one other time an artist we reviewed explicitly names an artist we'd previously reviewed: Crash Test Dummies (see Pops Shuffled His Flight [Crash Test Dummies and Toll Road Brewing Company]) names David Bryne (see Byrned-Again [David Byrne and Lincoln & South Brewing Company]) in When I Go Out with Artists. These two latter albums are both among Abigail's top five favorite albums we've ever reviewed, as revealed in our Pops on Hops Hot 100 Special!Super Bowl Sundae contains a sample that sounds very similar to a sample previously discussed on the podcast: Hip Hop Dancer's Theme by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince samples Peter Piper by Run-D.M.C., which sampled Take Me to the Mardi Gras by Bob James.Abigail plugged The Manifesto (feat. Trueno and Proof) off of Gorillaz' recently released The Mountain, a song featuring both Indian influence and a Spanish-language rapper!girl, so confusing was brewed with the 2026 Pink Boots hop blend from Yakima Chief Hops. Sunday the 3rd of May was James Brown's birthday - the Godfather would've turned 93 - but rather than trot out the usual JB bangers, we went completely sideways with global covers, reinterpretations and JB-adjacent joints from every corner of the globe: Brazilian jazz-funk, Afrobeat, big band, boogaloo, library music, orchestral easy listening, and everything in between. Enoch Light's lush big band arrangement of "Hot Pants," Dick Hyman's barrelhouse take on "Give It Up or Turnit Loose," ESG's stark post-punk reimagining of "There Was a Time," Albert King cutting "Cold Sweat" from a Delta blues angle, joined by Combo Xingu, Larry Willis, NZ's Quincy Conserve, and the Boogaloo Combo. Kirk held it down through the boogie and soul section with some serious heat, and from there we moved into a deep run of soul, jazz-funk, smooth boogie, and contemporary beats - from Azymuth's cosmic Brazilian groove and Bob James to George Benson, Shakatak, Shalamar, and and exclusive spin of some forthcoming heat from one of NZ music's MVPs: Nathan Haines. The back end got more current with Los Retros, Ego Ella May, Corto Alto, and Shy One's "Nort Wess" choppy electro and grime-inflected mid-range synths released on South London's Touching Bass late last year. We rounded things out with Orgone's deep funk stomp "Hambone" and Alex Nut and Steve Spacek's "Bright." A big spread for a big birthday - happy 93rd, JB!

Don Lucoff on Denver Jazz Fest

Ryan Estes sits down with Don Lucoff, founder of DL Media and Artistic Director of the Denver Jazz Fest. Don has spent nearly four decades in jazz as a publicist, producer, and festival programmer, working with legendary artists and labels like Impulse and Blue Note. Now he is helping build a national caliber jazz festival right here in Denver. The State of Jazz Don reflects on how dramatically jazz media coverage has changed. There was a time when major outlets regularly reviewed jazz records and featured artists on national television. Today, most of that coverage has vanished. Yet jazz itself has not disappeared. It continues to shape modern music. Artists like Kendrick Lamar have collaborated with jazz musicians such as Kamasi Washington and Robert Glasper. The influence is everywhere. As Don puts it, jazz can sell everything but itself. It is deeply embedded in popular culture, even if it is no longer center stage in mainstream media. Why Denver Is a Jazz City Denver has a stronger jazz pedigree than many people realize. The Front Range is home to major jazz education programs at the University of Northern Colorado, University of Denver, University of Colorado Boulder, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and Colorado State University. These institutions consistently produce world class players. Historically, Five Points was known as the Harlem of the West, a vital stop for touring jazz musicians crossing the country. Add the Beat Generation passing through town and you have a city that has long been part of America's cultural and musical story. Inside Denver Jazz Fest The Denver Jazz Fest spans 15 venues across Denver and includes performances in Boulder County. It blends national headliners with respected local artists, creating a citywide celebration. This year's lineup includes Pat Metheny, Branford Marsalis, Bob James, and John Beasley. The festival also honors the centenary of Miles Davis and John Coltrane with special tribute performances, including a presentation of A Love Supreme by Denver saxophonist Keith Oxman. The goal is inclusivity and accessibility. Whether you are a lifelong jazz fan or just jazz curious, there is a show for you. Where to Start Listening For new listeners, Don recommends classics from the Blue Note catalog such as Lee Morgan's Search for the New Land, Herbie Hancock's Maiden Voyage, Wayne Shorter's Speak No Evil, and Grant Green's Idle Moments. From Impulse, he points to John Coltrane's Crescent and A Love Supreme, Alice Coltrane's Journey in Satchidananda, and Pharoah Sanders' Thembi. These records are not homework. They are entry points into a vast and vibrant tradition. Final Takeaway Don's career proves one thing. You may not get rich in jazz, but you can build a life around passion, community, and great music. Denver Jazz Fest is more than a series of concerts. It is a statement that this city values artistry, education, and cultural history. Learn more and get tickets at denverjazz.org. See you there.

Don and Dude keep the “I Love the 80s” journey moving into 1986, when pop music turned glossy, global, and emotionally grown-up while hip-hop kicked down the door to the mainstream and refused to close it. One of us drops the needle on a blockbuster art-pop record that turned a former prog-rock oddball into an MTV-era icon, and the other cranks a Queens rap classic where drum machines, DJ wizardry, and rock guitars collide to launch hip-hop into its album era.The Albums Peter Gabriel – So (1986) Peter Gabriel's fifth solo LP trades full-on prog theatrics for a song-focused blend of art-pop, soul, and worldbeat that still feels intimate and strange even as it aims for stadiums. "Red Rain" and "Sledgehammer" frame the record's range, from cinematic storms and ritual grooves to horn-driven 60s-style soul reimagined as big-budget 80s pop. "Don't Give Up," a duet with Kate Bush, turns Linn drums and warm keys into a slow-motion conversation between despair and reassurance that speaks to unemployment, depression, and stubborn hope. Deep cuts like "That Voice Again," "Mercy Street," "Big Time," "We Do What We're Told," and the Laurie Anderson collaboration "This Is the Picture" keep the emotional arc intact while proving that production maximalism and adult subject matter can still hit like pop.Run-D.M.C. – Raising Hell (1986) By 1986, Run, DMC, and Jam Master Jay had already changed rap once; Raising Hell is where they change the world's idea of what a hip-hop record could be. Peter Piper opens with the bell-driven Bob James break, 808 thump, and nursery-rhyme flips that double as a DJ showcase and statement of intent. "Walk This Way" rebuilds a 70s rock riff into a hip-hop framework, smashing the wall between rock radio and rap while relaunching Aerosmith and blasting Run-D.M.C. into MTV rotation. "It's Tricky" and "My Adidas" sharpen their minimal drum-machine-and-scratch template into pure hooks, while "Proud to Be Black" closes as a history lesson and manifesto that points toward the coming wave of conscious rap.Diggin' Albums Jay Buchanan – Weapons of Beauty (2026) The Rival Sons frontman strips away the big rock theatrics for a rootsier, Americana-leaning solo set, focusing on weathered vocals, open-sky arrangements, and songs that feel like they were written on long drives and sleepless nights.Genesis – Invisible Touch (1986) Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford lean fully into shiny 80s pop on their biggest commercial triumph, stacking drum-heavy radio singles and bright synths around a few lingering prog instincts on the longer cuts.Susanna Hoffs – The Lost Record (2024 / recorded 1999) A once-shelved garage-made collection that captures the Bangles singer reshaping her identity at home with a new baby and a circle of songwriter friends, marrying jangly pop, adult introspection, and late-90s alt-rock warmth.Kirsty MacColl – Real (2023 / recorded 1983) Finally released in full decades after being shelved, this early 80s set frames MacColl's sharp, clear voice with icy synths and programmed rhythms, revealing a tougher, more new-wave edge than her later, better-known work.Follow & Support Follow the show on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds, and support by subscribing, rating, reviewing, and sharing.“Well, I guess that's the difference between you and me. You wanna lose small, I wanna win big.” – Maverick, played by Tom Cruise in 1986's Top Gun.

Using monitoring technologies for management of dairy calves and herd health with Dr. Melissa Cantor, Penn State University; Dr. Julio O. Giordano, Cornell University; Dr. Bob James, Down Home Heifer Consulting

This episode was recorded at the 2025 Western Dairy Management Conference in Reno, Nevada.Dr. Cantor gives an overview of her presentation at the conference, focusing on data from accelerometers and robotic feeders to predict calf sickness. While the correlations are there and we know calves change activity, behavior and feeding behavior before they get sick, there is more work to be done before the technology is ready for wide implementation. When data from both accelerometers and robotic feeders were used, Dr. Cantor's group was able to find respiratory disease with a 96% accuracy six days before clinical symptoms. (2:36)Dr. James and Dr. Cantor discuss the use of robotic feeders in the industry and the under-utilization of data collected by the feeders. Dr. James shares observations from a farm he works with about heifers coming in to the milking herd who were raised on robotic feeders compared to those raised in calf hutches. (6:15)The panel discusses the accuracy, specificity and sensitivity of the predictions from monitoring technologies. They also touch on challenges around deciding what parameters to use to classify an animal experiencing the onset of clinical disease and how that will vary depending on the disease. They go on to share their experiences with training algorithms and how computer scientists have different goals than animal scientists with this type of technology. (11:17)Dr. James talks about how data collection and using data can be a hard sell on some calf ranches. The panel talks about some of the challenges they have seen with adoption of technology and recordkeeping on dairies of various sizes. (28:30)Dr. Giordano gives an overview of his presentation on using monitoring technology in fresh cows to predict disease. His group has worked with wearable sensors that monitor rumination time and physical activity. More recently, sensor companies have added eating behavior and body temperature. Variations in these parameters create a health alert to check on that particular animal. (39:08)He goes on to describe two extremes in dairy farms. One spends little time and effort on looking for sick cows, while the other puts a lot of time and effort into this task. He discusses how bringing technology to these two types of farms benefits them and what drawbacks there are, along with an economic analysis for each. (43:14)The panel discusses how implementing monitoring technologies require a change in management. Allowing animals the opportunity to express their natural behavior is critical to success. They also talk about how veterinarians view this technology and the target age for calves to best learn how to use a robotic feeder. (48:54)Panelists share their take-home thoughts. Last month's M&W set at Green Bar will be uploaded in a future episode, in order to make way for this month's special "Cali-Jentes West Coast Smooth Jazz" opening set by none other than Markus Jentes, whose birthday we'll be celebrating this upcoming Wednesday July 16.BACKGROUND -For those who aren't aware, Markus (a.k.a. Mark Cali-Jentes) and I, Elian, go way way back.  We first played together a Bellissima in the Fort Strip where we were introduced by common friend Wendell Garcia in 2003.  Mark not only played at but also did the graphic design for the unforgettable Paseo Uno LOUNGE pool party series I organized with the Mandarin Oriental in 2004.  Mark and I then teamed up with Martin Wisniewski to help turn M Café into Makati's top nightspot in 2005 with the MyHOUSE weekly parties.  20 years later, Mark and I are back behind the decks once a month at Green Bar with the Music & Wine parties.  As for Inés, she's known Mark as long as I have, maybe even longer, and we're all still the closest of friends today.Aside from being a great DJ, Mark is today one of the Philippines' most engaging artists.  You can find his exquisite paintings exhibited in galleries around Manila or on his website at www.markusjentes.art  Having studied the visual arts at Pepperdine University in Los Angeles in the 90s,  he fell in love with California's brand of smooth jazz, listening to the likes of Bob James, David Benoit, Lee Ritenour, and David Sanborn, to name a few.  This is the vibe that Mark recreates in his set for this week's podcast. DJ SETS -Mark and I happen to be performing together this Friday July 11 at the closing party of Chotto Matte in BGC starting at 6pm sharp.  So come join us for Happy Hour if you're in the area! We're also celebrating Mark's birthday this upcoming Wednesday July 16 at M&W Green Bar in Legaspi Village, Makati, starting at 5pm.  You DON'T wanna miss that.  And now, 2 hours of California smooth jazz (Mark's opening set) followed by 2 hours of deep house music (my closing set) recorded at Green Bar in April.  Enjoy!Elian & Inés
