Send us a textI am delighted to welcome this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, Carol Riddick. We were introduced to Carol on The Soul Train Cruise, where she was one of performers ranging from Soul Train TV show stars like Shalimar, to contemporary favorites like Carol. We enjoyed it so much that we booked for 2026. If you listened to our reflections of the cruise a few weeks ago on Ep 165 The Soul Train Cruise I think it would be clear the person that ‘stole the show' for us was Carol Riddick. The thing is, unlike the dozens of old school performers on the cruise, we weren't familiar with Carol when we boarded! Join Yasi and Steven, along with Athletes and the Arts co-founder Randy Dick, as we talk to the quintessential Athlete and Artist, Tim Cunningham. He turned down a chance to play in the NFL to pursue a career as a professional jazz musician. Thirty years later, after recording 8 albums and touring all over the world, he is still going strong. He talks about the difficulty playing Division 1 football, maintaining his passion for music over the years, and staying healthy while playing the sax.Tim's website: www.timcunninghammusic.comInstagram: @tim.cunninghamsaxophonistFacebook: @TimCunninghamMusicPageBio: When Tim Cunningham was faced with the choice between the football field or the musical stage, fortunately he chose the latter. Having played the saxophone for over half his life, Tim spent his college years at Michigan State splitting his time between playing defense and playing music. And although a football scholarship saw him through school, his passion for the sax has carried him well beyond, as he passed up an NFL contract and eventually pursued a career in music. For decades the words "smooth , sultry, cool & funky" have been used to describe Tim's high energy and emotional stage show as his sexy blend of smooth jazz and soulful R&B connects with people of all ages, races and genres of music. This unique and versatile style has earned Tim the pleasure of opening for jazz greats Dave Koz, Norman Brown, Brian Culbertson and George Benson. On the flip side, his bumpin' R&B flavor has on occasion paired him with Earth Wind & Fire, Cameo, Boyz II Men, Patti Labelle, Frankie Beverly, Jeffrey Osborne, and the late Luther Vandross.Signed to Atlantic Records in 1994 Tim's first major label release, "Right Turn Only," featuring the efforts of Will Downing, Brian Culbertson, Kevin Whalum, and Bobby Lyle was released in 1996. It's featured single, "This is the Life," hit #19 on the Smooth Jazz Chart and received much international airplay. Tim's additional CD credits include "Sax Change Operation", "A Change in Altotude", "Waiting For Love", "Inner Peace", and "Manchester Road" which was picked up by Nite Breeze Music/Universal in 2008. His 2011 release entitled "Reflection", features a cool collection of original tracks packed with smooth grooves and emotional ballads. In 2012 Tim recorded and released "Tim Cunningham Live" where he covered a collection of some of his favorite songs. In 2019 Tim hosted and performed in the 1st Annual Smooth Jazz Cruise on Land in St. Louis. This inaugural festival featured Brian Culbertson, Eric Darius, Grace Kelly and Erin Bode and was produced by Entertainment Cruises Productions and producers of the Smooth Jazz Cruise.Tim's experiences bridge beyond the live stage to TV as he co-wrote and performed the theme song to 20th Century Fox's "Bertice Berry Show". He also appeared in the movie, "The Ghost Who Walks" as Officer Taylor, three episodes of "The Untouchables" TV series as The Saxophonist, BET's "Jazz Central and a commercial spot for Budweiser. In 2021 "Smile" co-written with Al Caldwell from Tim's "Waiting for Love" CD was featured in the movie, "The Job" written, directed and produced by Randy J. Goodwin. In October 2022, after nearly a 10 year recording hiatus "Freedom" was released, with his new single, "Enough Said" (remix) climbing the Smooth Jazz Network , Radio Wave and Smoothjazz.com charts.

Episode 113- Join host Troy Saunders as he converses the guitarist, songwriter, singer, producer, mixer, engineer, entrepreneur and so much more David P. Stevens. The episode begins with a brief and light hearted conversation on David's early life in Philadelphia. He is the youngest of 4 children, who's parents both were educators and his father was the Pastor their church. David's father also had a funk band in which David's older siblings were members. He was too young to join, but this influenced David to start playing the guitar and sing. David explains his many moves in life from living in Nashville, Detroit, Philadelphia and eventually Los Angeles. Each move was to accomplish and new goal. Did you know that David's first album was a gospel album, released in 1999? It is no longer available for streaming. Troy and David discussed the reason for its unavailability and the possibility of re-releasing it.Through out the conversation Troy goes through David's vast catalog of music highlighting songs that touched him and or David. He started with David's first jazz release in 2005; the album "Timeless". They grooved to the title track. Another song featured was a beautiful song called "I Need You" which featured both David and Mitchell Jones of Commissioned. David tells how this collaboration came to be and how it was one of the highlights of his career so far. David's collaborations span the who's who's in music including Frank McComb, Maysa, Gerald Albright, Najee, Will Downing, LaToya Luckett, Carol Riddick (their collaboration "Love Is Still in Style" is also featured in this episode) Lin Rountree, Carl Cox, Steve Cole and sooo many more. David inspires to work with even more artist across all genres. Some the artists on his wish list include Ledisi, Deborah Cox, Barbra Streisand, James Taylor, Lalah Hathaway and more. Of course this episode would not have been complete without talking about David's latest album "Go". David once said that his album "Rouge" was his favorite release; but I think that "Go" has him changing his mind. The whole album is a masterpiece, so it was hard for Troy to pick which songs to highlight. He started with the jazzy remake of Evelyn "Champagne" King's "Love Come Down" with Erin Stevenson on vocals. Evelyn is the blueprint; but David did a great job reinventing this R&B classic. Then Troy switched gears and played "Cozy"; a nod to the the great classic R&B slow jams from the 1980's. Another selection played was "Journey Home" which is bound to be a smooth jazz classic. For the next two songs Troy enlisted help from David; asking what were his favorites off of the album. David suggests "East Meets West" ( an old Norman Brown, one of David's influences, hit) and "Might As Well" ( A tune the starts off as a smooth jazz classic and by the end you are in the middle of a full gospel experience. They ended the episode with the latest single "Go" which features the man himself on vocals. This song is at home on any R&B station as well as on smooth jazz formats. David has a new video premiering on September 3 for this single. It will showcase David's acting, scoring and production skills. Look out for the premier on YouTube. This conversation covered so many topics. Too many to type here. Just tune in to hear more. Not only was the music incredible in this episode; but the conversation was filled with passion. These two men love what they do and it shows. Don't miss this uplifting and joyful conversation.Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. What does the #metoo movement have to do with the climate crisis? And how can dreams help both? Today meet Marsha Hudson and Norman Brown. We’ll talk about Love and Power and how better emotional versatility can improve relationships and reduce our impact on the planet… and on each other. Our guests start out by saying that women seek love while men seek power. Reconciling these two drives is the work of relationship. They talk about how a modern lack of empathy is the root of both the #metoo movement and the current climate crisis. Marsha shares a dream in which policemen come to the door telling her how to live her life as an example of how dreams reveal subconscious material that is hindering the relationship. They describe the nine basic emotions and the value of naming them highlighting shame and contempt as well as excitement/interest. They finish by talking about their upcoming free class about emotions which starts March 7 in Santa Cruz. CONTACT Dr. Brown or Dr. Hudson at 831-239-4901 to register for the class. BIO: Norman M. This episode is so fun! Why? Because we get to talk about flying!!!!!! Ok, I really enjoy flying. But Norman Brown L.O.V.E.S flying! It isn't just a passion, it's a soul thing for him. He's learned so many things from his time as an airman in the Naval Air Force. He has learned patterns that help him remember the patterns we're taught by our church leaders. He has learned how to watch for and pay attention to the small stuff--and that helps him in personal relationships. He has learned to show love to so many people because his heart is full.
