Interviews with smooth jazz artists from around the world!
(January 1, 2022) / Written by: Chris Rizik of soultracks.com He has been an artist's artist, and one of the most revered musician of the past two decades. Tonight we say a sad goodbye to guitarist and vocalist Nick Colionne, who reportedly died in his sleep early this morning. The Chicago native began playing guitar as a pre-teen, and by his mid-teens was known as a rising star around town. As a high schooler, he was already recording with such luminaries as Curtis Mayfield and The Staple Singers. Colionne began recording solo in the mid-90s, and by the turn of the century, he established himself as one of the brightest young stars on the jazz scene. His hit “High Flyin'” was the foundation of his 2003 breakout album Just Come In and began a string of hit songs and popular albums such as Keepin' It Cool, No Limits, Influences, and his most recent disc, Finger Painting. A commercial and critical favorite, Colionne was known for his dapper attire that made him a familiar sight at jazz cruises and festivals. He was also known for his community service in the Chicago area, particularly in mentoring students at St. Laurence K-8 School in Elgin, Illinois. His varied community work was recognized when he won the Wayman Tisdale Humanitarian Award in 2010. The sudden loss of this great artist and humanitarian is an awful way to start 2022. We will be praying for his family, even as we reflect on his great contributions. Rest in peace, Nick. By Chris Rizik
Aneessa kicked off her stateside debut with a winning cover of Soul II Soul’s 1989 anthem, “Back to Life,” which has cracked the Top 10 of Billboard Magazine’s “Smooth Jazz” chart. In a similar thematic vein is Aneessa’s cover of Madonna’s “Miles Away” which she relates to so deeply for its message of a long-distance relationship. Aneessa and Michael wrote “Just to Be with You” about their relationship when love was blooming yet they were so far away from each other, leading to her coming to visit…and never return home. Most interesting is the song “Satisfied” which, ironically, was written by Michael and his first wife, Brenda. Their daughter Tiffany remembered the unreleased song and suggested it as perfect for Aneessa to sing. Real love, maturity, and acceptance don’t get any deeper than that. Marcus Anderson’s thirteenth album “HERO” features thirteen original compositions, which is the quintessential soundtrack of our lives with a common thread of inspiration, perseverance, passion, and resilience. A new-age fusion jazz artist, Anderson’s music – as well as his message- is even more powerful and poignant in the current political, environmental and social climate of this nation and world. HERO takes the listener on a musical journey through themes of light and darkness and the quest for meaning in an often-chaotic world. Melding a wide range of musical styles with a natural grace, HERO evokes, but never imitates, the many legendary artists that have influenced Anderson’s compositions. “Just a Taste” featuring Tim Bowman offers a soft and slowly deepening funky vibe with darting sax lines while Tim’s melodic smooth approach brings the song on home. There are only a few established artists who are capable of reinventing themselves and jazz guitarist and Billboard chart-topper U-Nam is certainly one of them. As if to prove it he will release the genre-busting “U-Nam Goes Big Band”, 03/27/2020, on the Skytown Records label. “U-Nam Goes Big Band”, a sumptuous eleven-track rendering of sophisticated mood jazz, is made even more enticing by the amazing back-story that first put it on U-Nam’s radar. A phone call to his Los Angeles studio from Estonian producer Mikk Targo is all it took. Targo, CEO and Founder of the Estonian Author Society EAU had, for the past several years, been working with a panel of music industry experts to select from what was generally regarded as the best one hundred songs Estonia has ever produced. As they did so a body of work emerged that was not only a glimpse into the nation’s musical heritage but also an outstanding showcase for the renowned Lutz Krajenski Big Band. Coming off the back of a scintillating 2019 that saw him enjoy huge chart success with his 2 sensational albums “Future Love Parts 1 and 2” (that reached #20 on the Top25 Billboard Jazz Best Selling Album Chart and #8 in the Contemporary Jazz category) this is an exciting new direction for U-Nam to take but, with nine Top30 Billboard radio hits already to his name and an approach recognized as always innovative and often daring, his reputation for shaking the musical world to its core is already firmly in place. Through his three prior Mack Avenue Music Group releases and his attention-grabbing work with the likes of Christian McBride, Bobby Watson, Karriem Riggins, Jeremy Pelt, and the SFJAZZ Collective, Warren Wolf has established himself as the foremost straight-ahead vibraphonist of his generation, a bop torchbearer well equipped to carry the mantle of forebears like Bobby Hutcherson and Milt Jackson. On his latest album, Warren Wolf reveals an entirely different side to his multi-faceted talents. As the title implies, Reincarnation represents a rebirth of sorts for the Baltimore vibes man. In part, it frees Wolf to indulge his love for the R&B and soul hits that served as the soundtrack to his formative years in the 1990s. Guitarist David P. Stevens is back with a KILLER new five-track EP called Vibrations. Not only is playing the guitar but singing his ass off on the tracks "Natural" w/Latoya London and soloing on "I Just Can't Wait." Keivu Knox of Soultracks.com wrote: "David P Stevens has crafted a successful six-album run in his career to date, and as number seven is set for a release later this month, the artist known as “Mr. Guitar” may find himself with a new nickname, “Mr.Voice.” The new single, entitled “Natural,” is a romantic duet with former American Idol finalist and vocal powerhouse, Latoya London. David more than holds his own vocally on the track, which talks of a love that is “beautiful and made to be.” The vocal and musical connection between Stevens and London creates a hook that is equally melodic and memorable. Fans of Stevens' guitar work should have no fear, as his solo by track's end reinforces why he has been such a sought after musician in recent years. Vibrations, the forthcoming release from Stevens, is set for a February 14th release, and features other collaborations with artists such as Yancyy and Teri Tobin; but in the meantime, check out “Natural” and add it to your Valentine’s Day Playlist." By and large ‘Raise The Roof’ is the ‘Ronny Smith Show’ front back and center. Not only does he play guitar, keys, and bass throughout he also arranges, produces and programs all ten tunes. Eight of these are original compositions cleverly complemented by the addition of two immaculately crafted covers. The first is an edgy interpretation of the Bill Withers classic ‘Use Me’ with the second being a classy re-imagining of the Carpenters blockbuster ‘Superstar’. Truth to tell he makes both sound brand new and when (for the only time) he calls upon the input of a supporting artist it is Scott Martin on sax that adds another dimension to the easy grooving ‘Cool Breeze’. The first single to be serviced to radio is ‘Me Time’ that demonstrates the innate feel Smith has for understated yet compelling smooth jazz. Much the same can be said of the warmly inviting ‘On It’ for which he certainly is and although ‘Brazilian Dancer’ proves to be a supercharged Latin extravaganza Smith is able to channel that same energy into the foot-tapping, in the pocket ‘Breaded Funk Well Done’. Another number that really fizzes is the high-octane title cut. The perfect vehicle for Smith’s virtuosity, it is in the good company of the moodily delicious ‘Brighter Day’ and a blues-tinged rendition of ‘Say It Again’ where Smith’s interlude on bass guitar is something to savor. ‘Raise The Roof’ is a fantastic way to become acquainted with Ronny Smith’s special vibe. It is due out on January 27, 2020, and is not to be missed.

JWhite debuted as a solo artist with the 2012 album “New Jazz Swagger: Reloaded.” His sax play is a swirl of modern jazz with straight-ahead jazz references, emoting rich melodies and lush harmonic passes atop sensual R&B tracks. Competing at the Warren Hill Sax Summit in 2013 helped him win slots to perform at the San Diego Jazz Festival, Las Vegas Jazz Festival, Arizona Jazz Festival and Jazz at the Creek. He’s also played club dates from coast to coast. In 2015, JWhite dropped the “Grit and Glamour” EP, an outing that strayed from his jazz base. “Fearless” is a purposeful return to his muse. A seasoned core of hitmakers teamed with JWhite to create the EP. Drummer Eric Valentine and bassist Nathaniel Kearney form a deep-pocketed rhythm section on the opening cut, “Valley of the Sun,” which bodes to be the second single. Keyboardist Gail Jhonson pours the soul of her Philly roots into the three tunes she cowrote and coproduced for the set – “Mr. NuGroove,” “Morning Rain” and “90’s Kinda Love” - the last of which features supple basslines from chart-topper Darryl Williams. Guitarist Matt Godina was JWhite’s co-writer and co-producer on “Soiree.” “Just Ride” is the only solo trek on the disc. (Source: Great Scott Productions) Follow J. The lovely Nigerian songbird we know as Douyé has decided to take an off-ramp from the highway of smooth/contemporary jazz and lend her delicious vocals to the world of bossa nova/samba with a touch of straight-ahead jazz leanings. Following the path that a few other c-jazz artists have taken (Patti Austin comes to mind), the songstress, through this latest album Quatro (Bossa Nova Deluxe), demonstrates that she is by no means boxed in by any genre and wishes to spread her wings and soar to new horizons. While some may be a bit disappointed that Douyé is not seducing us with her silky smooth jazz/R&B grooves with this release, they should find that the material here warrants a listen. If you allow yourself to mentally go to Rio or some sun-kissed island while listening to this project, you’ll find its lure quite apropos and soothing. The all-present, polished, sauntering vibe that dances between a lazy cadence and one with bounce holds the promise of being able to wash over you and offer a much-appreciated release. Offering tracks like “Blue Bossa,” “Triste,” “How Insensitive,” the more up-tempo “Agua De Beber,” her glistening cover of the classic “Girl From Ipanema,” and others clearly demonstrate Douyé’s penchant for eclecticism and her ability to grasp and relate to the various flavors of jazz and other exotic music. All in all, this transition is a pleasant one and, while it doesn’t come without some surprise for those expecting the smooth jazz/R&B Douyé, it does come with the elegance and class we’ve come to know as a signature trademark of the songtress’ projects. Her seductive voice alone is always such a persuasive factor. Well done. — Ronald Jackson

Born and raised in Houston TX, Chris Walker began singing before he began speaking. He got his start in the church as a member of his family gospel group, The Walker Brothers. Chris plays the bass upside down like one of his early hero’s Jimi Hendrix. The Walker’s raised their children with a strong hand, and once Chris graduated from the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, he was all too happy to high-tail it to New York, with only forty dollars, in pursuit of his dreams of doing his own music. With aspirations of attending the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, he sold his bass amp and bought a one-way ticket to New York; despite being denied due to inability to pay the tuition. Fate, however, would intervene as Walker was walking the halls and happened to come upon a jam session in need of a bass player. When he took the stage the school dean just so happened to hear him and offered him a full scholarship on the spot and so begun another chapter in his musical journey. As a student and lover of jazz music, it was an opportunity that came via a former teacher, Gil Goldstein, that would bring to fruition a longtime dream of Walker to work, as Musical Director, with seven-time Grammy Award winner Al Jarreau. In honor of the late Mr. Jarreau, Chris Walker has released a new cd: We're In This Love Together: Celebrating Al Jarreau. Follow Chris on Facebook & Twitter.

Described as having “…a beautiful instrument, a truly warm and gorgeous sound…” audiences have been inclined to feel as though they come away from a performance post an intimate conversation rather than crowded venue. One listener says there is a “…natural honest element…as though singing is an extension of her breathing.” The dynamic tones, soulful melodies, and cryptic but honest references truly show Tahirah’s ability to relate to an audience using her voice to “…creatively and musically express feelings behind songs in ways that delight and surprise and move…” With fibers in a jazz-rooted father, a chaotic upbringing, an intense sense of feel, a love for old soul, an open ear for all music, and a respect for current rhythm and blues, Tahirah Memory’s sound is unlike any other, sounding distinctly like her personal truth.” Follow Tahirah on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
Singer, Leonard Dozier returns with his fourth album, “Sunday Word”, preceded by the exceptionally infectious single, “Fly,” a pop-flavored soul-infused original tune, penned by Leonard with collaborator (former Atlantic recording artist) Jamie Myerson. With a more immediate response than to his previous work - in particular from college radio and internet play - “Fly” is somewhat of a musical departure for Leonard, who notes, “It hearkens back to the late ‘70s/early ‘80s sound of artists like Hall & Oates and I think that pop/R&B style from that time is coming back in vogue now. Honestly, I believe this track has all the elements – the song, the production, the arrangement….it feels like my best recording to date!” Follow Leonard on Facebook/Twitter @leonarddozier and Instagram @leonard.dozier & @leonarddoziermusic.
