In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with the remarkably versatile vocalist and musician David Blamires for a thoughtful and wide-ranging conversation about his global musical journey, his time with the Pat Metheny Group, and his solo career.Born in the UK and raised in Canada, David's voice has left its mark across genres. He's perhaps best known for his work with the Pat Metheny Group, where his signature harmonies and unmistakable tone helped shape the sound of albums like Still Life (Talking) and We Live Here. But his career spans far beyond that, including an extensive resume as a session singer, live performer, and solo artist.Whether you're curious about the world of studio vocals, the dynamics of life on the road, or the creative spark that brings voices together in harmony, this episode offers a fascinating glimpse into the art and craft of a world-class musician.Music from the Episode:Minuano (Six-Eight) (Pat Metheny Group)Last Train Home (Pat Metheny Group)Across the Sky (Pat Metheny Group)Follow Me (Pat Metheny Group)Something to Remind You (Pat Metheny Group)Deep is the Midnight Sea (David Blamires Group)This Time (David Blamires)With Every Passing Day (David Blamires)Learn more about David and his work at davidblamires.com.Thank you for listening! This week, I have a playlist for you that stretches across continents and moods, a rich tapestry of sound that celebrates both discovery and the familiar warmth of timeless artistry. I open with a gem from Russia — "Case" by the Ilugdin Trio, a striking piece that caught me completely off guard in the best way. Dmitry Ilugdin and his trio lay down something deeply melodic, harmonically rich, and full of understated elegance. A real find. Next, I tip my hat to one of my all-time favourite voices in jazz, the ever-cool Patricia Barber. Her track "This Town" is a reminder of why she remains a singular force — cerebral, sultry, and effortlessly hip. Further into the mix, you'll find some fresh and fiery ensemble work from Clélya Abraham and company, the hypnotic grooves of Sean Khan with jazz legend Peter King and the luminous Heidi Vogel, and a cinematic journey courtesy of the Espen Berg Trio, joined by the haunting trumpet of Mathias Eick on "Vintermørke." And then there's "Eberhard" — a poignant, sprawling tribute by the late, great Lyle Mays. For those who, like me, hold the Pat Metheny Group close to the heart, this is a moving reminder of Lyle's genius. His musical voice was — and remains — one of the most emotionally intelligent in modern jazz. I close with some adventurous sounds: the genre-bending "El Momento" by Sly5thAve & Roberto Verastegui, the dreamy textures of Rahill's "Futbol," and an experimental nugget from Drift Lab that plays like a sonic science project in the best sense. This playlist is full of surprises, beauty, groove, and soul — the kind of mix that makes you feel like the world's a little more connected through sound. So wherever you're tuning in — just press play and let the music take you. Thanks for listening. Fictionary (extracto) 2. Eberhard (póstuma) *Suscríbete a nuestro canal. Inside MusiCast rings in the new year with our first guest for 2023, guitarist Dean Parks! Dean is no stranger to liner notes geeks around the world and was home grown in the state of Texas. In fact, he was a member of the “One O'clock Lab Band'' at North Texas State while in college. Whatever it is that's in the water at North Texas, he drank it – along with other top musicians who have come out of that amazing music program - like David Hungate, several Snarky Puppy band members, Norah Jones, Jeff Coffin, Don Henley, Lyle Mays, and others. Fast forward to today and we find Dean still engaged with contributing his talents to new projects from Lyle Lovett, LeAnn Rimes, Herbie Hancock, Diane Warren, and so many others. This only confirms that after decades of playing LA sessions, Parks still remains an A-list guitarist. His iconic work for Steely Dan, Al Jarreau, America, Streisand and so many other great projects speaks for itself. Today we'll help fill in some of the gaps of his amazing career. Inside MusiCast is glad to welcome Dean Parks.

Pat Metheny plays LIVE in Richard Niles Exclusive Interview PART 3 In this 3rd and final part of my BBC Radio 2 series “Pat Metheny - Bright Size Life” recorded in 2007, Pat not only explains his concepts, he also demonstrates them on the guitar. This is a unique opportunity to hear how he expresses the infinite optimism, fearless exploration and sensitive humanity of his music. Features comments from GARY BURTON, LYLE MAYS, JACK DeJOHNETTE, JAY AZZOLINA. I continued to ask philosophically provocative questions that elicited such fascinating answers. As I wrote in my book, The Pat Metheny Interviews, “we are indeed fortunate to have lived at a time when artists such as Metheny were allowed to develop, be appreciated and supported by both the artistic and economic environment of the 2nd half of the 20th century. Our lives have been enriched by them.” Also included are musical transcriptions of Pat's playing from the book. Enjoy! Take notes! SUBSCRIBE! A RADIO RICHARD SPECIAL PRESENTATION “The only listener I know anything about is myself. I have absolutely no sense of how anybody else perceives anything. I just try to play for the listener inside me.” Pat Metheny Pat Metheny is one of the most significant musicians of the last 50 years. In 2007, he invited me into his NYC home studio for my BBC Radio 2 series “Pat Metheny - Bright Size Life”. Over the next 3 days we talked about the myriad aspect of a career of unprecedented achievement, revolutionizing both the guitar and jazz itself - from Metheny's first realization of his affinity for music to his wisdom accrued from years of dedicated musicianship - at practice, in the studio and on the road. Also interviewed are Metheny's close collaborators including Gary Burton, Lyle Mays, Jack De Johnette, John Patitucci, his brother Mike Metheny and the late Michael Brecker. My friend Jack Gwizdala accompanied me for these interviews and played bass with Pat on some of the musical examples. “The Pat Metheny Interviews” published by Hal Leonard in 2009, including musical transcriptions of Metheny's musical performances illustrating his creative concepts. “Limpid, lucid, fluid, flowing, open, optimistic: you could apply these words to both Pat Metheny's music and this book, a series of interviews by Dr Richard Niles, a gently humorous man whose strong work ethic has been rewarded with worldwide success in more than one genre. Niles's banter gets the best out of his old friend. If you're interested in music and ideas for a better future this book will help. If you're already converted to Pat Metheny then it's essential.” JAZZ JOURNAL “the book goes beyond the usual biographical and guitar specific material that is normally found in a Metheny interview. It is a chance for musicians and non-musicians alike to learn more about the artistic process that fuels this legendary guitarist, composer and bandleader.” GUITAR CHRONICLE “Niles has known Metheny since the mid-1970s, and he knows what questions to ask. The responses he gets are smart, funny and revealing. He has done pretty much everything right. People will still be learning from Metheny's music for many more decades. And they can learn a lot about why it matters from this book. “ CALIFORNIA CHRONICLE “Like eavesdropping on a conversation between two long-time friends and musicians, The Pat Metheny Interviews, is an insightfully revealing dialogue between American jazz guitarist and composer, Pat Metheny, and Richard Niles, a renowned composer, producer and songwriter.” MY 3 BOOKS Available from Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1423474694/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_2ZJRVTA97F4BXQB07MWF
