Only four men have reached 90 or more miles 3x or more at World's Toughest Mudder. Trevor Cichosz, Kris Mendoza, Ryan Atkins and Matt Hanson. Evan interviews Matt about growing up, his rise from eating disorder to top level OCR athlete and Death Race finisher. Plus, things get weird when they start sharing random facts including Matt's insane unofficial world record and the weird collections each of them has. One has 40,000 Pokemon cards and the other a jewelry armoire full of knives...can you guess which collection belongs to each of them? Trevor Cichosz has more individual podiums at World’s Toughest Mudder than anyone else alive. Cichosz has been on the men’s podium every single year since 2014, a five-year streak that is still ongoing. Starting in 2014 Cichosz has finished World’s Toughest Mudder in 3rd place, 2nd place, 1st place, 3rd place, and most recently, 2nd place in 2018. If that pattern holds up Cichosz will claim his 2nd World’s Toughest Mudder championship this November in Atlanta. --- Free Sticker Update: We have reached our goal of 150 reviews in the U.S. Apple Podcast store! Kris Mendoza is one of the most beloved members of the Tough Mudder community. Kris has run World’s Toughest Mudder every year since 2014, finishing with 50 miles in his first year. In 2017 he was on the first-place relay team and in 2018 he won his first individual World’s Toughest Mudder championship. He won the race with a dramatic pass of Trevor Cichosz, the Men's Champion in 2016. Mendoza passed Cichosz less than one mile from the finish line. Mendoza’s win in 2018 was the closest, most dramatic finish in World’s Toughest Mudder history. Mendoza is also a doctor, working as a dental anesthesiologist near his training grounds in Colorado. --- Welcome to Champion's Week on World's Toughest Podcast. Fresh off his 3rd place finish at OCR World Championship Enduro 24, military veteran and 5x World's Toughest Mudder (WTM) finisher Trevor Cichosz joins Evan for this ultra episode. Trevor is one of the most consistent athletes in our sport and regularly defies what most people view as possible. The two ultra-athletes discuss fueling, pacing, differences between Enduro-WTM and why he is staying with WTM in 2019. Trevor also shares his experiences doing Everest 135 (135 mile race through the base camp area of Everest) as well as his 200 mile run in Scotland last year. Episode brought to you by RockTape, more than a tape company, RockTape has movement tools to keep you healthy and race ready. Music provided by Marc Capaldo of Madison Ambush.
Ultra marathon athlete and former World's Toughest Mudder champion Trevor Cichosz joins me this week to tell me all about his experience at Everest 135, an intense 135-mile ultra marathon where he took third place. We begin with Trevor telling me all about how he heard of this race, all the race prep required and the training (and lack thereof) that led up to it. He tells me about the race prep in the days leading up to the race, and walks me through his entire race experience, from the issues to the checkpoints, to the altitude and all that climbing. Trevor shares some wild stories, from hallucinating a village to holding onto donkeys so he wouldn't get kicked off the treacherous mountain trails. We talk about how it compared to his race across Scotland last year, and Trevor talks about the lessons he learned and what he'll do to prepare next time. We end by talking more about ultra marathons, what's next on his schedule, and his next crazy adventure. Want more? Read about Trevor's experience in his own words, on his blog here: http://www.groundpounder.org/2019/05/13/everest-135/
Amelia Boone and Kris Mendoza join us to talk about the recent announcement that Tough Mudder will no longer offer prize money to top finishers at World's Toughest Mudder and their other races. Amelia Boone is a Spartan Race world champion and a three-time champion of World's Toughest Mudder. She has been a part of the OCR community since running in the very first WTM in 2011. With her TV commercials, magazine covers, and endorsement deals she is the most high-profile athlete, man or woman, in Obstacle Course Racing. Kris Mendoza is the 2018 champion of World's Toughest Mudder. He won the closest race in WTM history by passing 2016 champion Trevor Cichosz with less than one mile to go in the race. Mendoza finished the race with 100 miles, his second time breaking the 100-mile mark at World's Toughest Mudder. --- Welcome to The OCR Report Podcast! We are the only podcast to focus exclusively on the Elite SPORT side of Obstacle Course Racing. Each week we talk about who won the latest race, who lost, and what that means for next week's race. The OCR Report Podcast is hosted by Will Hicks, the host of World's Toughest Podcast, and presented by The OCR Report, home of Overcome and Run with Heather Bode and Obstacle Running Adventures with Mike Stefano and Katelyn Ritter. --- What do you think of The OCR Report Podcast? Trevor Cichosz is the men's 2016 World's Toughest Mudder Champion. During his win in 2016 he became one of the seven men to run 100 miles in a single World's Toughest Mudder and joined the exclusive "Orange Jacket Club." Trevor recently ran 219 miles in a race across Scotland. During the 65 hours it took him to run, he did not sleep at all. He won the race. One interesting part of Trevor's race strategy is he makes sure his pit crew does NOT tell him standing in the race. He doesn't want to know what place he is in. This is part of his plan to "Race the course, not the competition." --- The OCR Report is live! When one of her athletes would come in she would feed them, handle their gear, and get them back onto the course like a Nascar pit stop. Live from the Tough Mudder weekend in Sonoma, this week's episode is full of interviews from athletes at the Tougher Mudder wave, the Toughest Mudder West race, and race director Eli Hutchison. I spoke with Lauren Taksa and Nick O'Sullivan on Saturday all about their respective wins at the Tougher Mudder race, and they give us some insight into the course and the competition. Then I spoke with Trevor Cichosz, Rea Kolbl, Allison Tai, and Kris Mendoza after the Toughest Mudder race (shortly after I had finished my own) all about the competition, how the daytime Toughest Mudder compared to the races at night, what they thought of the course, and more. Lastly, I spoke with Eli Hutchison from TMHQ all about Toughest and about the many changes Tough Mudder is making to their 2019 season.
This week, I talked to elite OCR athlete and ultra runner Trevor Cichosz all about his recent win at Ultra Great Britain, a 214-mile race across Scotland. Trevor tells me how he heard about the race and why he decided to run it, and what he was most worried about going into the race. He also talks about how he trained for the longest race he's ran yet. He walks me through his race experience, from the start line nerves, to the darkest part of his race and how he pushed past it, to some of the most interesting parts of the course (including hallucinating from the lack of sleep). Trevor talks about what kind of gear and nutrition he relied on, and about the gear mistakes he made. He also shares some interesting stories about his encounters with animals and slightly aggressive cows. We end by talking about his World's Toughest Mudder experience last year where he took third place with 95 miles, and what he's looking forward to at that event this year.

Elite Pit Crewing with Gina Estrada. We talked with Gina Estrada about working Pit Crew for Toughest Mudder and World’s Toughest Mudder. Gina has worked pit for Team Four Eyes, Amelia Boone, Ryan Atkins, Austin Azar, Trevor Cichosz, Lindsay Webster, Allison Tai and more. Will got to watch Gina work a bit in Atlanta. When one of her athletes would come in she would feed them, handle their gear, and get them back onto the course like a Nascar pit stop. She shares some of her secrets including having a “Pit Kit” ready and on hand at all times. Anything that her athlete could imagine they would need, she has in her Pit Kit. From batteries to nutrition to meds to chewing gum and more, she’s ready for whatever goes wrong. Building your own Pit Kit is a good first step to running a pit crew. Austin finished 2nd to Trevor’s 1st at WTM 2016 and 3rd to Trevor’s 1st at Toughest Philly. Even though it wasn’t the top of the podium, Will asked Austin how it felt to finally beat Trevor. On this episode, news of Amelia Boone’s return to racing (Don’t call it a comeback) along with her rare beef jerky audio, and three different interviews. First, Sandy Rhee, of the NE Spahtens Podcast joins us to talk Toughest Mudder Philly and give her take on the race from the “non-elite” side of things. Then we get a view of the race from the top of the podium as we talk to Trevor Cichosz. Trevor won Toughest Philly, as well as World’s Toughest Mudder 2016. We talk to him about both races. Finally we check in with Nolan Kombol and Eli Hutchison of TMHQ. Nolan and Eli are the brains behind Toughest Mudder. They’re the ones to thank for that Mud Mile in Atlanta. We talk about that obstacle specifically. We also talk about Stage 5 Clinger in Philly, as well as lots of other Toughest and World’s Toughest information. Toughest Mudder Philly Recap! Toughest Mudder Philly was this past weekend. Trevor Cichosz and Allison Tai came away with the first place wins and 208 runners out of 717 (29%) qualified as contenders. Before we get into the Toughest Philly recap information Will talks about Ian Panter and the car accident he was in as he was leaving the Saturday morning Tough Mudder course. The local news station where Ian lives did a story on the accident and we listen to a clip from it. If you’d like to help Ian and his family with their medical expenses, a GoFundMe page has been set up. You can find a link to it at facebook.com/worldstoughestpod Kris Mendoza borrowed the World’s Toughest Microphone and talked to several people in Philly, pre-race. He spends some time talking with Trevor Cichosz, Lou Fisher, Stefanie Bishop, John Fagan, Jim “Da Goat” Campbell, Keith Allen, Joel Forsyth, and Melissa “Sharkbait” Dugan. Da Goat and Sharkbait are on this podcast as often as Will Hicks lately. As we start talking about Philly, we talk about the Philly results and stats, as well as discussing the Toughest Mudder series as a whole. Philly had 29% of the field qualify as contenders, Europe had 33%, Atlanta had 61%, and LA had 46%. Total contender numbers so far: 2,272 people have run Toughest Mudder. 885 have completed 25 miles. 39% have become contenders. Will then reads a few iTunes reviews (Have you left your review yet?) and reminds everyone how to enter to win a free pair of Merrell Agility Peak Flex trail running shoes from the World’s Toughest Podcast. If you want better odds, you can also win of a pair of the shoes from Amazon, but the entry fee is about $130. Once we go to the phones, we don’t come back. We have a conversation with Allison Tai, Kevin Given, Alex “Chikorita” Roudayna, Kevin “Bubbles” Gregory, Sara Knight, Jordan McDougal, and Stefanie Bishop. Allison Tai won first place at Toughest Philly. If you’d like to hear more from Allison, check out episode 17 of the World’s Toughest Podcast. Kevin Given ran Toughest Philly this weekend. You’ll recognize him on course in his straw cowboy hat. Chikorita won third place at Toughest Philly and has qualified as an Elite Contender three times. She will make some noise this year at World’s Toughest Mudder. Kevin Gregory has the nickname “Bubbles”. If you listen to his whole call with Will you’ll find out why. Sara Knight is one of two women (with Sharkbait) who have run every Toughest Mudder so far. She and Chad Trammell are the only two people to qualify as an Elite Contender in more than one country. Jordan McDougal won second place at Toughest Mudder Philly. He has a background in ultra-running. This is his first Toughest Mudder event. Stefanie Bishop is the reigning World’s Toughest Mudder. She needs no introduction. You introduce yourself to her. That’s not her job. This episode is almost two hours long. What do you think about that? Next time should we split it into two or three different episodes and put out a shorter episode each week? Or would you prefer to get as much information as you can, as soon as you can? Let us know in a review on iTunes. We would sincerely appreciate it.
