From the publisher: On June 7, 1907, a ship packed with Russian Jews set sail—not to Jerusalem or New York, where many on board had dreamed they would go, but to Texas. The man who encouraged the passengers to go was David Jochelmann, Rachel Cockerell's great-grandfather. The journey marked the beginning of the Galveston Movement, a forgotten moment in history when ten thousand Jews fled to Texas in the lead-up to World War I.The charismatic leader of the movement was Jochelmann's closest friend, Israel Zangwill, an internationally acclaimed novelist. As antisemitic violence rose in Eastern Europe, Zangwill embarked on a desperate search for a temporary homeland—from Australia to Canada, Angola to Antarctica—before reluctantly settling on Galveston. He feared the Jewish people would be absorbed into the great American melting pot, but there was no other hope.In a highly inventive style, Cockerell gives us history exactly as it unfolds, weaving letters, diaries, memoirs, newspaper articles, and interviews into a vivid account. MELTING POINT follows Zangwill and the Jochelmann family through two world wars, to London, New York, and Jerusalem as their lives intertwine with some of the most memorable figures of the twentieth century. As each person chooses whether to cling to their history or melt into their new surroundings, the book ultimately asks what it means to belong, what can be salvaged from the past, and whether a promised land can ever live up to its promises.Rachel Cockerell's website can be found at https://www.rachelcockerell.co.uk/Her social media feed can be found at https://x.com/rachelcockerellInformation on her book can be found at https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780374609269/meltingpoint/Axelbank Reports History and Today" can be found on social media at https://twitter.com/axelbankhistoryhttps://instagram.com/axelbankhistoryhttps://facebook.com/axelbankhistory
On 3 February 2025, the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC) hosted the former commander of U.S. Central Command, General Frank McKenzie, USMC, Retired, to discuss his book "The Melting Point: High Command and War in the 21st Century." Joined by Tom Spahr on stage they discussed his experience as a combatant commander and the challenges of leadership in wartime. Their conversation emphasized the importance of history and its influence on senior leader decision-making. The presentation examined the drone strike that killed Qasem Soleimani, the Iranian Quds Force commander, the raid that killed ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and the withdrawal from Afghanistan and the challenges faced during the evacuation from Kabul.
As the Commander of U.S. Central Command, General Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr., USMC (Ret.), oversaw some of the most important — and controversial operations in modern U.S. military history. He had direct operational responsibility for the strikes on Qassem Soleimani and two successive leaders of ISIS, the many months of deterrence operations against Iran and its proxies, and the methodical drawdown in Iraq. He directed the noncombatant evacuation operation in Afghanistan, and our final withdrawal from that tortured country. His book, The Melting Point has three themes which are as follows. The first one is the importance of the primacy of civilian control of the military. The second theme is the uniqueness of being a combatant commander. Combatant commanders participate in the development of policy, although as junior partners. Finally, the third theme that McKenzie argues is that leaders matter, and the decisions they make have a profound effect on what happens on the battlefield. McKenzie provides a vivid portrait of leadership in action in one of the most volatile regions of the world.Hailing from Birmingham, Alabama, General Kenneth F. McKenzie, Jr. graduated from The Citadel in 1979 and was commissioned as a Marine Corps officer, beginning his notable military career as an infantry officer, which would ultimately lead to his appointment as Commander of United States Central Command (CENTCOM).
In today's episode I have the pleasure of speaking with Rachel Cockerell, a London-based author, whose first foray into writing began as a family memoir, and evolved into a remarkable and innovative work of historical non-fiction called Melting Point. Melting Point is a great 2024 release from Headline, and will be coming out in Spring of 2025 in the States. The book was longlisted for the 2024 Baillie Gifford Prize, and explores the origins of the Zionist movement, and one of its particular, little-known chapters – the Galveston Plan. Most interestingly, perhaps, is the structure – it's a polyphonic blend of primary sources and texts, which she splices to build a story arc. The book is an absolutely fascinating read that touches on identity, belonging, and the search for a place to call home. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and would strongly recommend it. Lit with Charles loves reviews. If you enjoyed this episode, I'd be so grateful if you could leave a review of your own, and follow me on Instagram at @litwithcharles. Let's get more people listening – and reading! Rachel Cockerell's four books were: Big Magic, Elizabeth Gilbert (2015) Lincoln in the Bardo, George Saunders (2017) The Old Ways, Robert Macfarlane (2012) Golden Hill, Francis Spufford (2016)

General McKenzie was the 14th commander of the United States Central Command. What You'll Learn Intelligence Combatant commands and their purpose Leading CENTCOM, Central Command The role of intelligence in military leadership The US withdrawal from Afghanistan Reflections Learning from the lessons of history The importance and impact of leadership And much, much more … Quotes of the Week “What that leads you to is really, intelligence. Designing a successful PCR assay is all about selecting the right primers to deliver the sensitivity and selectivity for which PCR is known for. But anyone that's designed an assay themselves will know that doing so successfully is a lot harder it sounds. We're joined by two PCR assay design pros for this episode. Kimi Soohoo Ong, and Dr. Rounak Feigelman, both from Thermo Fisher Scientific, shine a light on the many factors that must be considered to design a winning PCR assay. From the level of fragmentation of nucleic acids in the sample, to what other species' genomes that may be present in the sample, to what the sample matrix may contain, to the PCR master mix being used, if multiplexing is required, to what assay controls will be, and more! These two practiced bioinformaticians cover these challenges and then tell us how their team overcomes challenges to develop winning assays for both qPCR and dPCR applications. Our conversation uncovers the level of skill and artistry that goes into this craft. As always, you get to learn a bit more about our guests' backgrounds and career paths in the Cassie's Career Corner portion of the interview. They share how they both chose a bioinformatics path over wet lab work, while also acknowledging how important the wet lab work is to what they do. They also share some great advice and resources for anyone looking to explore a career in bioinformatics. After a week in which the election race was all but confirmed as a Biden-Trump rematch, pundits - and likely many voters - were listening and watching closely to the current president's State of the Union address. They were met with a fiery address, as Biden weaved between issues including the economy, the border, the Middle East, and even his own age. So, have Democratic fears been allayed? What does the address signal for the next 8 months of campaigning? Anat Shenker-Osorio is a political communication strategist, who joins the show from California. Flo's business, Choc on Choc, exemplifies this ethos, offering not just chocolate but customisable, hand-carved chocolate gifts that are unique, artistic, and emotionally evocative. Through their journey, they've participated in gift fairs, made inroads in e-commerce, and navigated the tides of consumer trends, from personalisation to sustainability. Today, we'll dive into how Flo managed to sustain a thriving business for 20 years, with 20 staff and over 500 creative chocolate gift products, the lessons she's learned, and the excitement that still courses through her veins every single day. Buckle up, as we unwrap the gold foil of Flo's business wisdom, celebrate her successes and feast on her strategies for scaling up in the ever-evolving gifting market. Oh Hey HBs! Nat and Erin are here with a M/M firefighter-chef romance. Which we really wanted to like. But unfortunately, it wasn't everything we wanted it to be. We're bringing you Melting Point by Kate Meader and it had so many things, and most of them were characters from other books. Bonus content: shaking your THANG, #justiceforlombard, that one lone arm chair, is this how you take care of a concussion?, enthusiastic rimming (AGAIN!), and so much more. Ferrin Contemporary in North Adams, MA, in partnership with Heller Gallery in New York City, is presenting “Melting Point,” a group exhibition of glass and ceramic artists whose use of the melting point is central to their practice. Across two locations the exhibition features nearly 100 works by 22 artists. The artists, both established and emerging, explore the inherent physical qualities of materials that are formed and reformed by melting, as well as express their concern for the environmental melting point our planet seems to be approaching. A material's melting point is the degree at which solid becomes soft, eventually becoming liquid and a boiling point is reached. Glaze melts, clay and glass soften, surface and form become pliable. Used metaphorically, as the planet warms we are finding ourselves closer to the melting point both physically and socially. We welcome Leslie Ferrin, founder and director of Ferrin Contemporary with ceramic artist Courtney M. Leonard and glass

The pioneering festival celebrates two decades.
Felicia is a representational artist who paints Alla Prima portraits from her studio in Detroit. Her self portrait ‘Melting Point’ was accepted into he BP Portrait awards show in 2015. After 15 years of waitressing, Felicia took a leap and decided to focus exclusively on her painting. It’s an inspiring story of faith in her abilities and pushing past the “oh my god, what did I just do” moments to become the artist she is today. Antrese Wood and Felicia talk about the importance of human connection for artists, how connecting with artists in the real world as well as the virtual world creates a safety net and community. I especially appreciated Felicia’s candor in talking about a difficult period in her life and how the apathy she felt turned out to be the thing that allowed her to grow as an artist.
After a break, I decided to come back with a quite different mix. Screaming Lower tries to experiment with new sounds, lower beats, more vocals and some Indie tracks remixed for electronic scene. Maybe this is one of the oddest mixes I have done, but I am very proud of the final result. Listen to it with no rush and open mind.
I decided to keep Melting Point spirit in a different way. The radio show was over, life is complicated and I had no time to prepare the best mix the show deserved monthly. So, I decided to quit Pure.FM, focus on production and prepare The Mixes Series, sharing mixes inspired on Melting Point radio show from time to time. Last summer I spent a lot of time in Costa Brava (Catalonia). There, the strong winds that strike the coast are called Tramuntana. The mixture of mountains, sea and strong winds draws a delightful landscape which inspired me to prepare this session. Smell the sea, feel the peace, hear the wind...Enjoy Tramuntana.

These are songs that inspire the best in us. They make us want to join the bands on stage, take up an instrument, and add our own little something to the mayhem. Any instrument is fair game. We've divided things up a bit between instruments, or at least inserted our own commentary for most of the songs, so give a listen... then respond in the comments with your thoughts, and certainly any songs we left out!Due to the nature of the genre, there is a preponderance of guitar songs. Oh, and both DJ's Yuletide and Jack actually DID begin playing guitar because of THESE SONGS! Jack made us proud, having had the honor to shred Episode 666 (see playlist) in front of a live audience at none other than the WORCESTER PALLADIUM, perhaps the MOST METAL venue ever (insert citation here...)?Disclosure of DANGER:This show may inspire reckless amounts of air drumming, with feet thundering mercilessly on dual air-bass-drums; air-shredding leading to fingers air-bleeding; and of course fingers fluttering at supersonic speeds along air-keyboards until complete air-dislocation.
