EVER wanted to know what it's like to operate ships where half the crew are women? Well, this week's podcast is going to tell you. Lloyd's List's principal analyst, Michelle Wiese Bockmann, spoke to Hafnia, the New York and Oslo listed shipowner about a trailblazing initiative that has seen them crew five product tankers with 50% women. But I also want to highlight some of the positive steps being taken to integrate women to a seafaring career and international maritime industry generally. But there's also an important piece of history to mark. Michelle catches up with the two women who founded the Women's International Shipping and Trading Association at the very same pub in London where its first meeting was held 50 years ago. It's important to highlight and recognise the treatment women receive at sea. But it's also important to highlight some of the positive steps being taken to integrate women to a seafaring career and international maritime industry generally.

Mike shares some tips on crewing and pacing!

This episode of the Lloyd's List Podcast was brought to you by Veson. Visit https://veson.com/decision-advantage for more information. Some shipowners warn that crew supply is only set to get worse due to a lack of young people wanting a career at sea. Others are concerned about the need to upskill existing crews to handle increasing digitalisation and multiple fuel types. This comes during a period of growth in the merchant vessel fleet due to a new shipbuilding cycle and limited vessel recycling. Most industry insiders agree that the talent shortage is already becoming a serious problem for the industry. Meanwhile, the switch to recruiting shipboard personnel chiefly from the Indian sub-continent and East Asia since the 1980s means there are fewer people able to fill numerous western shore-based roles requiring previous seafaring experience. As competition for crew has increased, more shipowners are taking action to increase the attractiveness of a seafaring career. These include improved crew accommodation, better internet connectivity and more flexible, or shorter working contracts. All of these can be effective ways to reduce attrition. So what more needs to be done to ensure a continued supply of skilled seafarers and attract young people to the industry to operate the global vessel fleet? Joining Rob Wilmington on this week's episode are: Julia Anastasiou, chief crew management officer at OSM Thome Raal Harris, chief creative officer, Ocean Technologies

Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to be part of the crew at Tony Robbins' "Unleash The Power Within" event in Cologne, Germany. Picture this: 13,000 people from all over the world, coming together for four days of life-changing experiences! You won't believe the energy I felt among the 400 crew members! It was like being part of a big, loving family where everyone truly cares for one another. I've never experienced anything quite like it before! As someone who speaks German, French, and Italian, I found myself in a unique position to help so many people. It was incredibly rewarding to see the relief on people's faces when they realized they could communicate in their native language. During the event, I received a beautiful bracelet from one of the trainers. It says "Believe in Yourself" - a powerful reminder that we all need sometimes. Remember, you are enough! You have everything you need within you already. I can't stress enough how much my life has changed in the past four years, thanks to the tools and techniques I've learned from Tony Robbins and my amazing coach. Alyssa is joined by two special guests this episode on pacing and crewing, her pacer from the Canyons 100 miler, Nic Erol, and her husband and long time crew chief, Codi Clark. The first part of the episode focuses on pacing where Nic and Alyssa discuss the history of pacers, their purpose in races as well as where in the world pacing is allowed or disallowed. They go on to talk about what to look for in a pacer, the pacer's role for the runner, and discussions to have pre-race. In the second half of the episode, Codi and Alyssa break down the role of a crew, especially how a crew chief operates and delegates tasks to help the runner. They also discuss packing essentials for crew, how to mentally and physically prepare for the race and wrap up with Codi's key takeaways from crewing for the past six years. This is a great episode to share with your pacers and crew to help prepare for success in racing and beyond.
In this special episode, I share my experience as a crew member for Tony Robbins at the UPW Unleash the Power Within event. My role was in the fire team, which involved building the fire and creating the firewalk experience for the participants. I reflect on my intentions for the event, highlight the importance of being in a beautiful state and the power of not quitting when tired, and I share my insights from the event, including the metaphor of being like a rock in the river amidst chaos. * Being in a beautiful state and practising presence can lead to gratitude and appreciation. * Don't quit when tired, quit when done - pushing beyond perceived limits can lead to surprising results. * Focusing on the right task, in the right environment, with the right people can unlock hidden energy. * Maintaining presence and focus amidst chaos can help navigate through challenging situations.
In this episode I review my packing list for a race. I also go over some tips for crew, pacer, drop bags, & general logistics. Enjoy!
