Crewing the Expedition and Erroneous Science. Guest Author: Hampton Sides. The mission involved two ships: the Resolution and the Discovery. Key officers included Charles Clerke, who commanded the Discovery while suffering from tuberculosis, and James King, a talented astronomer whom Cook mentored. Also on board were John Gore, an American-born veteran, and William Bligh, a brilliant but "insufferable" navigator who learned his craft directly from Cook. The voyage was partly motivated by the "open sea" theory of Daines Barrington, which falsely suggested that seawater could not freeze and that a path to the Northwest Passage would be ice-free if sailors stayed away from land. This wrongheaded science fueled the British Empire's obsession with finding a shorter route to Asia. 21784

What would you do if someone tells you that you're not built for the thing you love most?In today's episode of The Evolving Adventurer, I chat with ultrarunner, coach, mom and adventurer Bri Boley. What started off as a funny case of mistaken identity at Javelina Jundred this past October led to a powerful conversation about grit, self-belief, and choosing your own path—even when “experts,” injuries, and fear suggest otherwise. Bri shares how a physical therapist once told her she didn't have a "runner's body.” That comment—or her Aries nature—fueled her determination: she went from struggling through three-mile runs and finishing last at a 5K race to thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, racing ultramarathons, and coaching endurance athletes around the world. We venture into the challenges, and realities, of balancing adventure, motherhood, work, and training. Bri opens up about creating guilt-free time for herself, unexpected superpowers that come from being a busy parent, and why sustainable success is about much more than mileage, heart rate data, or race results. You'll learn lessons that transcend the endurance space: different perspectives on long-term growth, resilience, and building a life that supports your passions.Whether you're an athlete, entrepreneur, healer, parent, or simply someone trying to reconnect with the things that make you feel most alive, today's conversation is packed with wisdom, humor, and inspiration. From solo backpacking adventures at 17 to Cocodona crewing stories to rediscovering joy after burnout, Bri reminds us all that sometimes the most important journey isn't about going farther—it's about returning to who you were before the world told you what you could or couldn't become.Comment BRI and I'll send you the link.Timestamps:02:29 - How a whim led to eleven years living in a mountain town 03:36 - Bree's upbringing in Corvallis, Oregon, and her early sports journey 05:24 - From cheerleading to running and overcoming injury challenges 07:51 - Discovering her passion for trail and ultrarunning 11:25 - Building endurance through long-distance hikes and trail adventures 12:47 - Transition to ultrarunning with the Colorado Trail and PCT 13:36 - The mindset of grit and determination that drives her pursuits 16:24 - How her own injury history fuels her coaching approach 17:50 - The importance of long-term vision in athletic development 22:08 - Supporting athletes of all levels with empathy and process-oriented goals 25:58 - Balancing training with family life and mom superpowers 28:34 - The significance of time efficiency and intentional self-care 32:36 - Embracing solo adventures to build resilience and confidence 36:28 - Crewing at Cocodona and supporting incredible performances 43:02 - Bri's upcoming challenge: Oregon Outback 230 in 2026 50:03 - Her love for exploring new trails and avoiding race repetition 58:36 - The power of solitude and quiet in long-distance adventures 62:03 - Connecting with Bree: social media and coaching opportunitiesResources & Links:TrainRight Coaching — Bri's coaching platformCascade Endurance — Endurance coaching organizationBorn to Run by Christopher McDougall — Book that inspired BriWonderland Trail — Epic trail around Mount RainierInstagram — Social media profile

Episode 643 - Ben Ridley - From Parkrun to Delirious, Road Running, Big Feelings and Super Crewing Karin

The FitMIND FitBODY Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 8, 2026 140:29

In this episode of the ZenRUN Podcast, I chat with the wonderful Ben Ridley - Perth runner, Delirious West athlete, self-declared road runner, proud husband of Karin Ridley, and possibly one of the most committed “super crew” members in the ultra-running world. Ben's story starts with a childhood full of sport - footy, swimming, surf lifesaving, T-ball, basketball - basically everything except running. Because running? Absolutely not. Ben grew up with chronic asthma, tricky knees, and a very strong dislike of running. But life has a funny way of circling back. After years of work, family life, health challenges, weight struggles, FIFO, mental health battles, and a major lifestyle shift, Ben and Karin found themselves at parkrun. And that changed everything. What started as a Saturday morning “why would anyone do this?” moment slowly became 5Ks, 10Ks, trails, half marathons, Feral Pig, Delirious West, 100 milers, 200 miler attempts, big DNFs, big lessons, big friendships, and a running life Ben never expected. This episode is funny, honest, emotional, and very Ben. We talk about weight loss surgery, running for mental health, the magic of parkrun, the chaos of Delirious West, crewing Karin, hallucinations, chafing, broken tyres, beers at aid stations, podcast-fuelled road running, and why community might be the greatest thing running has given him. Why You'll Love This Episode Ben shares: How he went from not being able to run a couple of hundred metres to becoming an ultra runner Why parkrun was the perfect no-pressure place to begin How he and Karin rebuilt their health together The reality of weight loss surgery - and why it was definitely not the “easy way out” His first 50K at Feral Pig and why he was “carrying on like a pork chop” halfway through His unforgettable Delirious West 100 miler finish with only 30 minutes to spare What it was like crewing Karin through her 200 miler after his own race ended The grief and emotion of losing his mum during Delirious Why DNFs hurt, but don't define you How running has become one of his biggest mental health tools Why he's currently loving road running, Melbourne Marathon training, and running into the MCG Why running with mates, coffee after parkrun, and pub run friendships matter so much Why Delirious still has baggage, but also still has a pull How he's heading back to Delirious with mates for the Great Southern Beer Run Tips From Ben Ben shared some really practical, honest advice for runners who are struggling to get out the door: 1. Find your reason why Don't just run because you “should.” Work out why it matters to you. Is it your mental health? Your fitness? Your friendships? A goal? A bit of space from life? That reason helps get you moving when motivation disappears. 2. Remember how you feel once you're out there Ben says the hardest part is often getting out the door. Once you're moving, things start to shift. Your head clears. Life feels a bit lighter. The run does what it came to do. 3. Use something that helps you get started For Ben, that might be a podcast, music, a book, or just being out on the trail listening to birds and trees. The point is simple: make the run easier to begin. 4. Run with people when you can Community has been huge for Ben. Parkrun, pub run, trail events, Ultra Series, coffee after runs - these people have become lifelong friends. Sometimes running is less about the running and more about who it brings into your life. 5. Walking counts Ben's reminder is simple and brilliant: Half an hour is better than nothing. If you can't run, walk. If you can't do the full plan, do something. It still matters. 6. Strength training helps Ben is a big believer in strength work for runners, especially if you want to keep running longer distances, reduce injury risk, and avoid the post-run “can't sit down on the toilet” situation. Very practical. Very true. A Beautiful Reminder From Ben's Story Ben's story is a reminder that running doesn't have to start perfectly. You don't need to grow up as “a runner.” You don't need to be fast. You don't need to have it all together. You can start with one parkrun. You can walk. You can struggle. You can DNF. You can come back. And somewhere along the way, running might become less about proving something - and more about finding your people, clearing your head, and becoming someone you never expected to be. Connect With Ben You'll most likely find Ben at parkrun, pub run, crewing Karin, running roads, signing up for something ridiculous with mates, or preparing for his next Delirious adventure. And if you see him at an aid station, he may remind you: You did choose to do this. Delirious WEST event Website - https://deliriouswest200miler.com.au/ Interested in the 2027 DW? We explore the strain on on-call systems, the need for national standards and how workforce changes, duty systems and family support are shaping the modern job. The conversation also dives into firefighter health, contamination and the move toward health monitoring, alongside a critical discussion on water infrastructure, flow rates and the risks of relying on a system firefighters do not control.

In this episode of Talking Trek, we break down week one of the new Maverick faction in Star Trek Fleet Command and talk through what changed between playtest and live launch. DJ, Tarpy, and Jules Vern dive into the Conqueror Borg solo armadas, the target stat changes, the directive controversy, and why communication around the launch left a lot of players frustrated. We also cover the big strategic question of the week: should you chase loot or focus on tasks? Using live examples and calculator math, the crew explains why Maverick progression is driven much more by alliance milestones and solo tasks than by raw loot pulls from lower targets. If you're trying to decide whether to punch down, push higher targets, or build around alliance scoring, this episode has the breakdown. On top of that, the show touches on the new roadmap, the increasing focus on alliance-based gameplay, and what that means for both large and small alliances going forward. There's also practical advice on Maverick building priorities, when to invest in research, and how to time your task claims so you don't waste a 7-day cooldown. Finally, the back half includes crewing discussion for different ops ranges, live target tests, and a look at which task paths actually pay the best. If you're trying to get the most out of the Maverick faction this month, this is the episode to watch. #StarTrekFleetCommand #STFC #MaverickFaction #TalkingTrek #Scopely #BorgArmadas #STFCGuide #STFCMaverick   1:20 — Show open and episode overview: Maverick faction, Conqueror Borg solo armadas, roadmap, crewing, and weekend events are introduced. 25:49 — Main Maverick discussion begins with Jules Verne joining the show to break down the faction and new armadas. 27:21 — What changed before launch: playtest vs. live release, balance changes, and “subject to change” discussion. 36:38 — Target rebalance debate: original stats vs. updated stats, why the level 55 entry target changed, and whether it should have remained a tutorial target. 40:53 — Core strategy pivot: why loot is less important than first assumed, and why higher-target kills matter more for alliance task progression and Maverick credits. 42:19 — Alliance scoring explained: punching down for loot can hurt team progression compared with hitting the biggest target you can reliably clear. 44:23 — Roadmap / design direction: discussion of GM Conor's post and the game's stronger push toward alliance-based progression. 54:34 — Math on alliance milestones: what it would take for a full alliance to finish the top milestone and thoughts on whether future milestone expansion would help. 1:07:52 — Maverick task rewards breakdown: why the top two tasks matter most and how the payouts compare to the lower tasks. 1:48:39 — Crewing recommendations: bridge choices, below-deck priorities, crit setup, and how to think about forbidden tech / slipstream for these armadas. 2:30:13 — Live test results: a level 72 example shows sustainable wins and why raw loot looks appealing but still does not beat task-based progression. 2:31:00 — Store economics: the Maverick store only has one loot-purchased chest, and its value is minor compared with task rewards. 2:38:54 — Best progression path: rush building level 20, unlock the top solo task, then decide whether to push building or research based on what targets you can clear. 2:40:38 — Important warning: the level 20 task bundle has a 7-day cooldown, so timing your claim matters.

He talks about the joys and challenges of cruising in his local New Jersey bay, a spot often skipped by those transiting the ICW. He also recounts the recent two-week delivery trip from Brunswick, Georgia, to New Jersey on his new PDQ32, explaining why they chose to stay on the Intracoastal Waterway due to his wife's seasickness and concerns about the boat's new davits. The core of the conversation focuses on Chris's incredible experiences as a crew member on numerous long passages and boat deliveries. He explains that he secures these opportunities, which often involve working with professional captains, through an organization called OPO (Offshore Passage Opportunities). OPO helps vet both the captains and the crew, which is vital for safety and matching skills. Chris gives a firsthand account of a major international delivery: flying to France to join a new catamaran and undertaking a multi-stage journey that included a 19-day Transatlantic crossing via the Canary Islands. This episode is a must-listen for aspiring blue water sailors. It is Month of Jeff, so its time to talk to another Jeff, Jeff Pelletier.Jeff had a huge 2025. He paced and crewed at Cocodona, then took on Badwater 135 and followed it up with the inaugural Mammoth 200. We go deep on Badwater, why he was drawn to a race the core of the community has kind of fallen out of love with, and why he thinks it might be the hardest race in the world to crew. No aid stations, constant leapfrogging, the rulebook, the blinky lights, the penalties, and the reality of managing sleep, food, gas, and ice in Death Valley. Then we shift to Mammoth 200. What the course was like in year one, why it is going to be a major 200 because of how runnable and crewable it is, and how finishing timing completely changed the race experience once the weather rolled in. Jeff also talks about altitude issues, his first time puking in a race, and how it felt to miss his Badwater goals but still finish and learn something important. We also get into the filmmaker side, outsourcing rough cuts, what it is like trying to race and produce at the same time, the weirdest things he has done for a shot, and why telling the story can sometimes be the thing that keeps you moving forward. We wrap with what is next for Jeff, including Croatia, Spartathlon, Cape Town, and the always painful lottery season. This episode of the Free Outside Podcast is brought to you by Janji, Garage Grown Gear, and CS Instant Coffee.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Overview of Badwater 13507:11 The Challenge of Crewing at Badwater09:57 Logistics and Rules of the Race13:00 The Unique Terrain and Conditions16:14 Heat Management Strategies19:06 Hydration and Sodium Management22:04 Final Thoughts and Reflections on the Experience26:45 Testing Limits: Fluid and Electrolyte Management28:49 Data Collection in Extreme Conditions31:06 Balancing Filmmaking and Performance33:41 Lessons from Badwater: Setting Realistic Goals35:52 Transitioning to Mammoth: New Challenges Ahead37:06 Experiencing Coca-Dona: A Unique Race38:26 Mammoth's Inaugural Year: A Mixed Bag43:45 Resetting Goals: From Badwater to Mammoth48:01 The Unique Culture of Ultra Running50:04 The Rise of 200-Mile Races53:03 Storytelling in Ultra Running53:39 The Editing Process of Race Films56:50 Behind the Scenes of Filming Races01:03:00 Gear Recommendations and Future PlansSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside

Michael Scragg is an experienced endurance athlete in his own right. After breaking his neck in a downhill mountain biking accident in the early 2000s, Michael made the switch to road cycling and ultimately into triathlons.Since finishing ‘dead last' in his first Half Ironman, Michael has gone onto finish 9 Ironman triathlons as well as multiple 24-hour mountain bike races and ultra-marathons.He is also married to 2x Sparta Chicks Radio guest and ultra-endurance athlete, Melissa Urie!(Mel was on the podcast in 2017 to share her experience at the Epic 5 and again early in 2019 to discuss competing at the Ultraman World Championships). Over the last few years, Michael's racing career has taken a backseat while Mel pursued her ultra-endurance goals, which have included Ultraman races in Canada, Australia and at the World Championships in Hawaii, the Epic 5 as well as her upcoming race at Uberman. So in this episode, Michael and I discuss what it's like to be on the flip side; how to crew for, live with, support and encourage the endurance athletes in your life. And this topic isn't complete also without discussing why it's important for the athlete in the household to be aware of the impact their sport has on the family (in ways you may not have anticipated). This is a very different conversation from the ones we'd usually have, but it is I think just as important.

But I also want to highlight some of the positive steps being taken to integrate women to a seafaring career and international maritime industry generally. But there's also an important piece of history to mark. Michelle catches up with the two women who founded the Women's International Shipping and Trading Association at the very same pub in London where its first meeting was held 50 years ago. Some shipowners warn that crew supply is only set to get worse due to a lack of young people wanting a career at sea. Others are concerned about the need to upskill existing crews to handle increasing digitalisation and multiple fuel types. This comes during a period of growth in the merchant vessel fleet due to a new shipbuilding cycle and limited vessel recycling. Most industry insiders agree that the talent shortage is already becoming a serious problem for the industry. Meanwhile, the switch to recruiting shipboard personnel chiefly from the Indian sub-continent and East Asia since the 1980s means there are fewer people able to fill numerous western shore-based roles requiring previous seafaring experience. As competition for crew has increased, more shipowners are taking action to increase the attractiveness of a seafaring career. These include improved crew accommodation, better internet connectivity and more flexible, or shorter working contracts. All of these can be effective ways to reduce attrition. So what more needs to be done to ensure a continued supply of skilled seafarers and attract young people to the industry to operate the global vessel fleet? Joining Rob Wilmington on this week's episode are: Julia Anastasiou, chief crew management officer at OSM Thome Raal Harris, chief creative officer, Ocean Technologies
