Allison Tai and Shaun Stephens-Whale are the Toughest Mudder South women's and men's second-place finishers. Allison ran 40 miles for her second-place finish. Shaun and eventual winner Ryan Atkins traded the lead back and forth for the first 30 miles. Before we talk with Allison and Shaun we take a deep dive into the numbers of Toughest Mudder South. With World's Toughest Mudder only nine days away, this week's episode(s) are dedicated towards Tough Mudder's pinnacle 24-hour event. From discussing the top competition, to tips, to the mindset needed to complete the grueling 24 hours, I brought in five experienced World's Toughest Mudder competitors to share their thoughts about this event. They had so much to share, I went and split the episode into two parts. Part one features two elite OCR athletes, Allison Tai and Evan Perperis. Allison is an elite OCR athlete who is leading in Tough Mudder's competitive series, and was a runner-up at World's Toughest Mudder in 2014. I talk with Allison about her experience running the Tougher wave in Las Vegas last weekend (where she placed 4th), how Toughest has helped prepare for WTM, and how she trains and gets through this 24-hour event. Evan is a frequent flier on our show: he is an experienced elite OCR athlete who created team Strength & Speed (they also have a podcast), is a part of the Conquer the Gauntlet Pro Team, and finished 8th last year at WTM with 90 miles. He also writes articles for Mud Run Guide, two of which we reference during his interview: Five Ways Toughest Mudder Will Change World's Toughest Mudder Inflated Expectations: What Toughest Mudders Need to Know About World's Toughest Mudder Evan and I talk about what sets Toughest Mudder apart from other 8-hour races, we speculate on the future of WTM given the rise of other 24-hour events (and about other 24-hour events in general), and discuss knowing your limit. It's a long one, but full of some great information!

It may seem like a play on words but Allison Tai is one Tough Mudder in every sense of the phrase. Just recently coming off of the win at The Spartan Ultra Beast World Championships this year (2017), she is setting her sites on the win at The Toughest Mudder World Championship in a matter of weeks. Her story is one of fables, having been taken out by a car while riding her bike, suffering a broken back, hip and arm to return to ultra endurance racing is simply amazing. We talk with Allison about her goals, her desire to break 100 miles at WTM and the competition.

Gina has worked pit for Team Four Eyes, Amelia Boone, Ryan Atkins, Austin Azar, Trevor Cichosz, Lindsay Webster, Allison Tai and more. Will got to watch Gina work a bit in Atlanta. When one of her athletes would come in she would feed them, handle their gear, and get them back onto the course like a Nascar pit stop. She shares some of her secrets including having a “Pit Kit” ready and on hand at all times. Anything that her athlete could imagine they would need, she has in her Pit Kit. Toughest Mudder Philly Recap! Toughest Mudder Philly was this past weekend. Trevor Cichosz and Allison Tai came away with the first place wins and 208 runners out of 717 (29%) qualified as contenders. Before we get into the Toughest Philly recap information Will talks about Ian Panter and the car accident he was in as he was leaving the Saturday morning Tough Mudder course. The local news station where Ian lives did a story on the accident and we listen to a clip from it. If you’d like to help Ian and his family with their medical expenses, a GoFundMe page has been set up. You can find a link to it at facebook.com/worldstoughestpod Kris Mendoza borrowed the World’s Toughest Microphone and talked to several people in Philly, pre-race. He spends some time talking with Trevor Cichosz, Lou Fisher, Stefanie Bishop, John Fagan, Jim “Da Goat” Campbell, Keith Allen, Joel Forsyth, and Melissa “Sharkbait” Dugan. Da Goat and Sharkbait are on this podcast as often as Will Hicks lately. As we start talking about Philly, we talk about the Philly results and stats, as well as discussing the Toughest Mudder series as a whole. Philly had 29% of the field qualify as contenders, Europe had 33%, Atlanta had 61%, and LA had 46%. Total contender numbers so far: 2,272 people have run Toughest Mudder. 885 have completed 25 miles. 39% have become contenders. Will then reads a few iTunes reviews (Have you left your review yet?) and reminds everyone how to enter to win a free pair of Merrell Agility Peak Flex trail running shoes from the World’s Toughest Podcast. If you want better odds, you can also win of a pair of the shoes from Amazon, but the entry fee is about $130. Once we go to the phones, we don’t come back. We have a conversation with Allison Tai, Kevin Given, Alex “Chikorita” Roudayna, Kevin “Bubbles” Gregory, Sara Knight, Jordan McDougal, and Stefanie Bishop. Allison Tai won first place at Toughest Philly. If you’d like to hear more from Allison, check out episode 17 of the World’s Toughest Podcast. Kevin Given ran Toughest Philly this weekend. You’ll recognize him on course in his straw cowboy hat. Chikorita won third place at Toughest Philly and has qualified as an Elite Contender three times. She will make some noise this year at World’s Toughest Mudder. Kevin Gregory has the nickname “Bubbles”. If you listen to his whole call with Will you’ll find out why. Sara Knight is one of two women (with Sharkbait) who have run every Toughest Mudder so far. She and Chad Trammell are the only two people to qualify as an Elite Contender in more than one country. Jordan McDougal won second place at Toughest Mudder Philly. He has a background in ultra-running. This is his first Toughest Mudder event. Stefanie Bishop is the reigning World’s Toughest Mudder. She needs no introduction. You introduce yourself to her. That’s not her job. This episode is almost two hours long. What do you think about that? Next time should we split it into two or three different episodes and put out a shorter episode each week? Or would you prefer to get as much information as you can, as soon as you can? Before we talk to Allison, Will talks about Toughest Atlanta and shares a few stories about the course. He loved it. We also try out something new, with some short quick phone calls to members of the community that ran Toughest Atlanta. Allison Tai is many things, a mother, obstacle racer, coach, ultra runner, world record holder, and wife to name a few. Allison makes a mark wherever she finds herself. She is the mother of two young girls, won the Spartan Race Ultra Beast in 2016 (the weekend after a UB win in Sun Peaks), top of Spartan Canadian Point Series in 2015, second place at WTM in 2014. World record holder for fastest female marathon pushing a stroller in 2013. But in 2006 the only thing on her mind was feeding and bathing herself without assistance after being hit by a truck at highway speed on a bicycle. From that accident, she suffered from a broke back, arm, and pelvis and additional nerve damage. The doctors initially told her that she probably wouldn't be running long distances for a while. However, Allison took the injury in stride and recovered to run an ultra marathon less than a year after the accident. Since that time Allison has become a dominant female in the sport of obstacle racing and beyond. On the podcast this week we talk about her injury, recovery, obstacle racing, and how she breastfed her daughter during World's Toughest Mudder in 2014 and still finished second for women that year. All that and more this week with Allison Tai. Overcoming adversity and obstacles in our lives can be very difficult at times, especially when faced with serious injuries or illness. There is a certain kind of strength that is accessible to all of us when we focus on the things that matter most and gain a clearer vision of our purpose. One of the most gruelling challenges that a person can take on is to train for and run ultra-marathons and other long distance race events. Today’s guest, Allison Tai, discusses a near-death accident that she endured back in 2006 and the obstacles that she had to overcome on her journey towards competing in the World’s Tough Mudder Competition in 2014 in Las Vegas where she finished 2nd place. Lots of valuable lessons were shared by Allison in this episode including how we need to re-shift our focus when it comes to defining what being fit and healthy means. Lots of takeaway for educators. Episode 108 - In today's show, we talk to with 3 top finishers from this year's World's Toughest Mudder. Allison Tai is like many Canadian athletes we have met in recent months. She's sweet, humble, and really good at obstacle racing. She won the Edmonton Spartan Sprint in July and the Canadian Spartan Ultra Beast in September. She then turned in an impressive 4th at the Spartan Super in Sacramento a few weeks later. At WTM, she beat all but 24 of the men and bested every woman other than Amelia Boone, completing 14 laps and 70 miles before time ran out. Despite great credentials, Miguel Medina and Hunter McIntyre showed up under the radar to WTM with Team Wolfpack Spartan. They then spent the next 24 hours (plus) fighting off Under Armour Team Australia to take home the 1st place team prize. Today's show is sponsored by Mad Anthony Mud Run. Mad Anthony was known for his tenacity, intensity and character; we hope that you will bring those same attributes as you complete this adventurous challenge including numerous “battles” that will confront you along the way.
