Federal Tech Podcast: Listen and learn how successful companies get federal contracts

All systems, including federal systems, are full of vulnerabilities. The question is, given a limited number of hours in the day and a limited staff, how can you optimize your resources to remedy this issue? Well, the Cybersecurity & Cyberinfrastructure Security Agency has released a Binding Operative Directive that targets that concern. It was released on November 10, 2023, and is titled, “Transforming the Vulnerability Landscape.” During today's interview, Willie Hicks from Dynatrace will look at the whole issue of discoverability and what impact this new BOD will have on the federal community. If you examine the BOD from 40,000 feet, it transfers the focus from the federal technology leaders to the vendors. Instead of having a security announcement buried on a vendor's website, CISA suggests it be posted in a machine-readable format. This way, updates can be automatically sent out so they can be ingested. The Vulnerability Exploitability eXchange helps users know if a given product is impacted. The military knows that if you defend everything you defend nothing. It allows links to the Software Bill of Materials so users can know about which vulnerabilities they should worry. Finally, they look at something called the Stakeholder Specific Vulnerability Exchange. This reinforces the fact that not all vulnerabilities impact all federal agencies. CISA suggests that agencies consider vulnerability frameworks that can assist in reducing risk. Will Hicks applies his years of experience in federal technology to unpack many of these concepts during the interview. He reinforces the concept of visibility. One cannont set appropriate priorities if one doesn't know what is on the network.  Once that essential step is accomplished, then an administrator can use guidelines to set priorities.

Rising UK singer-songwriter The Gleeman gets ready for the festive season with wistful new single ‘I Love Christmastime', releasing it one month before the big day.Having hit the scene with his debut EP ‘The Gunslinger' earlier this year, The Gleeman is set to round off his 2022 with ‘I Love Christmastime', a song sure to stir up memories of childhood glee every 25th December. In the spirit of singers such as Don McLean, Robin Gibb and Billy Joel, The Gleeman's voice takes you back to an era gone by, and with mentions of reindeer, Santa and the North Pole all name-checked to ring in the season, the festive excitement is almost palpable.‘There is nothing as heart-warming as witnessing the wonder on a child's face at Christmas – we all connect with that feeling. Leaving out mince pies & carrots, struggling to sleep through excitement, listening for the faintest sound of sleigh bells. “I Love Christmastime” takes us all back to that childhood innocence and reminds us of the joys of Christmas, no matter our age.' – The GleemanThe Gleeman grew up in the small West Cornish town of Helston, a short drive west of Falmouth, where his early passion for music saw him move through the ranks from the recorder to guitar to the school choir, and cornet in the local brass band. He was influenced by his love of piano men such as Billy Joel and Elton John, but was more a child of ‘80s pop, from Adam & the Ants to Frankie Goes To Hollywood, and via Queen on to the ‘90s bastions of Britpop. The Gleeman is set to release his debut album ‘Something to Say' in 2023. The album follows on from its debut EP ‘The Gunslinger', released in 2022, and a string of singles such as ‘Armistice Day' and ‘Hanging Around (The Ballad of Aaron & Amy Pt 3)'. Produced by Will Hicks (who has worked with likes of Ed Sheeran, One Direction and James Blunt), the album touches on themes of mental health, life milestones and loss balanced with uplifting and quirky storytelling. There will be a run of live performances from The Gleeman preceding ‘Something to Say', be sure to keep an eye on this significant new performer. Hosted on Acast. DJ came on the scene hot at last year's WTM and secured a podium position of third place!  He has since dedicated even more time and effort into this event and has been training at the Ultra House with Anthony Kunkel.  We would all say that it paid off as he took the win overall this year! 0:00 – 4:52 – Intro 4:52 – 11:00 – Quick News 11:00 – 12:05 – Content Preface 12:05 - 46:46 - Tyler Veerman Interview 46:46 - 1:21:14 - DJ Fox Interview 1:21:14 - End – Outro Next episode will hopefully be part 2 of our World's Toughest Mudder Episodes! ____ News Stories: Savage Point Series Spartan Fenway Stadium Results World's Toughest Mudder Team Winner Spartan San Jose Sprint, Super, and Beast Podiums Deka Fit Podiums: Men and Women Deka Strong Podiums: Men and Women Deka Mile Podiums: Men and Women Shark Secret Link Survey Secret Link Mermaid Secret Link Gym Secret Link ____ Related Episodes: 45. Making up for last week's lack of a guest we are having something of a double feature which we usually don't do in a single episode! First off we have Anthony Kunkel who runs the UltraHouse in Durango, Colorado.  He is a well known athlete in the running world but OCR has not been his main focus.  I (Mike) met him while covering WTM last year and it seems like he caught the ultra OCR bug and is ready to crush the course as an elite contender this year.  He is also sponsored by a bunch of companies and has a Patreon so please consider supporting him and his crew! The second interview is with Michael Lopez who had a short run of a podcast called My Journey to World's Toughest Mudder which I binge listened to back in April/May.  He is overcoming some health issues and is running this event in memory of his parents.  There are a lot of first timers each year to this amazing event but I wanted to have him on the show to hear from another every day person because in addition to elites, they makes WTM the incredible event that it is! 0:00 – 4:02 – Intro 4:02 – 15:35 – Quick News 15:35 – 16:21 – Content Preface 16:21 - 1:11:27 - Anthony Kunkel Interview 1:11:27 - 1:37:20 - Michael Lopez Interview 24:53 - End – Outro Next episode will be audio from our wedding if things work out the way that we hope that they do! ____ News Stories: Deka 2023 Schedule NYC Marathon Podiums NYC Marathon Fun Facts GoRuck Games Returning in 2023 OFX Podcast Hits 100 Episodes Grant Bercik's Dog Megan Jacoby Sets Women's Hyrox World Record Hyrox Chicago Podiums Spartan Trifecta World Championships Sprint Podiums Spartan Trifecta World Championships Super Podiums Spartan Trifecta World Championships Beast Podiums Spartan Trifecta World Championships Overall Podiums Blindfolded Secret Link Unicorn Fossil Secret Link Selfless Sports Secret Link Parenting Secret Link ____ Related Episodes: 45. This past weekend was the first race of the 2020 Spartan US National Series in Jacksonville, Florida. Ryan Atkins and Lindsay Webster took home the wins for the men and the women. On today's episode, we talk with the top four male finishers about their race in Jacksonville. We will talk with the top female finishers in future episodes. (Note on that below). Each man we talked with had a slightly different take on the race, and we talked about slightly different topics with each one. Ryan Atkins commented on OCR and social media during the off-season. Veejay Jones also touched on social media and the lengths people go to document their workouts. Ryan Kempson talked about his one-second win over Ryan Woods for 3rd Place and Ryan Woods talked about the non-controversy that was his Herc Hoist. We need your help! We start the show with a quick update on Spartan's potential purchase of Tough Mudder. It might happen, but the Tough Mudder co-founders are blocking the deal. If a deal doesn't happen, Tough Mudder is being forced toward bankruptcy by vendors they failed to pay in 2019. --- While Tough Mudder struggles to keep the lights on, Spartan continues to expand its fitness offerings. Yancy Culp has developed Spartan's newest program debuting in 2020: DEKAFIT. Yancy joins us to talk about what DEKAFIT is, what it is not, and how it is different from the CrossFit Games and Hyrox. One big difference: Anyone off the street can compete in DEKAFIT without having to learn new movements or new motions. Everyone knows how to throw something or push something. No one needs special training to learn how to run a lap on a track. Yancy is excited about removing that barrier to entry that might typically discourage the first-timer from competing. ---   Welcome to The OCR Report Podcast!  We are the only podcast to focus exclusively on the Elite SPORT side of Obstacle Course Racing. Spartan sent out a press release on Christmas Eve announcing they have acquired an option to purchase the majority of Tough Mudder's international operations. The press release is below.   As of December 26th, there has been no actual transaction between Tough Mudder and Spartan Race. We reached out to Spartan and Tough Mudder for more information on this possible transaction. Tough Mudder was unavailable for comment.   Joe De Sena joined us to talk about how the option purchase came to be and how the relationship between himself and Will Dean, the co-founder of Tough Mudder has changed over the years.   Will Spartan buy Tough Mudder? Would that be good or bad for Obstacle Course Racing? Let us know what you think in a review on Apple Podcasts.   --- Spartan Race announced the acquisition of an exclusive option to acquire Tough Mudder's UK, Canadian, and German events today, as the first step in an effort to bring together a complete merger of the two obstacle course race leaders.  Tough Mudder events in those countries would continue to be operated by the same team and under the same brand, to be a part of the larger Spartan family of brands and events.  Tough Mudder associates and participants in the UK, Germany and Canada will be able to continue on with their Tough Mudder adventure. “This is a goal we've had for some time,” said Joe De Sena, Spartan founder & CEO. “Tough Mudder UK, Canada & Germany bring a unique experience and putting the success of the two together strengthens our global mission of getting 100 million people off the couch.” Under Spartan ownership, Tough Mudder UK, Canada and Germany races and events would focus on teamwork-based non-competitive festival events, leaving the competition to the Spartan side of the business.  “I look forward to creating a lasting partnership with Will and Guy as we seek to complete the merger,” De Sena said. “I'm excited about the prospect of what we can do together, as one team." Spartan will continue to work with Tough Mudder's founders, Will Dean and Guy Livingstone, in efforts to complete the acquisition and renewal of Tough Mudder's US-based events and operations in the coming days. ---   Welcome to The OCR Report Podcast!  We are the only podcast to focus exclusively on the Elite SPORT side of Obstacle Course Racing. Loops is currently in the UK, following a break in Cape Town, where he is recording new music and writing with some of the industry's best. During their chat, Jeremy explained to Carl how incredible it was when the Rolling Stones pitched up in the recording studio right next to him, the previous day (Fri, 11 Oct 2019) - and also hinted at working with a major heavyweight in the UK. His also explained how his new single is about how we’re often our own worst enemies and explained the need to stay focused. In a world of technology and data, there has been a lot of critique on the FINANCIAL Services industry. Why pay an advisor big bucks to do something an index fund could? On today’s episode I sit down with Will Hicks, Founder and solo-practitioner of Sapling Wealth Management, LLC. Will started his career on Wall Street in 1986 and was one of the first analysts to cover Real Estate Investment Trusts and Master Limited Partnerships. Later, he specialized in health care service stocks and was voted an “All-Star” analyst by the Wall Street Journal. These days, he lives the Seattle dream running Sapling from his home office in the delightful neighborhood of Queen Anne. On today’s episode we discuss how an investment adviser can add approximately 3.0% to annual returns over time. How certain tax levers can be pulled to save big on healthcare expenses and how to know whether you should invest in the market or put your money into real estate.

Johnny Luna-Lima had the race of his life this weekend at Spartan Big Bear. He beat Ryan Atkins and the field for his first win of the 2019 Spartan US Series Championship and his first podium at a US Spartan Race ever. With his second-place finish Ryan Atkins has all but guaranteed he will win the 2019 Spartan US Championship when the final points are totaled after the upcoming final race in the series. On the women's side Lindsay Webster held off Rea Kolbl and Nicole Mericle for the win and moved into sole possession of first-place in the US series. Lindsay Webster and Nicole Mericle have won every race in the 2019 US Series Championship. With her third-place finish Nicole Mericle finds herself 24 points behind Lindsay Webster. Although she is technically behind Webster, due to the point structure of the US Series, she will be able to pass Webster in Utah for the series win as long as she does two things: 1) Finish no worse than 4th. 2) Finish ahead of Webster To state it simply: If Nicole Mericle can beat Lindsay Webster in Utah, she will become the first woman not named Lindsay Webster to win the Spartan US Championship Series. Lindsay Webster has won the series every year since it's inception in 2016. If Lindsay Webster beats Nicole Mericle in Utah she will defend her title and become the four-time defending champion of the Spartan US Championship Series. --- Welcome to The OCR Report Podcast!  We are the only podcast to focus exclusively on the Elite SPORT side of Obstacle Course Racing. Tough Mudder announced they will eliminate all cash prizes for all their race brands in 2019. This includes TMX, Tougher Mudder, Toughest Mudder, and World's Toughest Mudder. We talked with two-time women's champion Rea Kolbl to see what she thought of the decision and if she would defend her title as women's champion at World's Toughest Mudder. Rea WILL NOT race World's Toughest Mudder this year. She gave us her reasons and talked about what OCR races and non-OCR races she will run this year. We also held a panel discussion with Will Hicks, Heather Bode, and Katelyn Ritter about Tough Mudder tightening the purse strings. There was agreement that this is bad for the elite side of the sport but there are possible silver linings for those that are not full-time professional athletes. They also made a few guesses about how this decision may play out over the next several months. What do you think about Tough Mudder removing prize money? Let us know in a review on Apple Podcasts. The last event of the weekend of World's Toughest Mudder is called "The Bar Crawl". It's not called that because people crawl from bar to bar though. It's called the Bar Crawl because everyone is so sore, they have to crawl to get to the bar. Or at least that's the story we heard from our first guest this episode. We are joined by six guests we talked to at the bar crawl the night after World's Toughest Mudder 2018. J.D. Allen is an Atlanta local and veteran of multiple World's Toughest Mudders. He shares his thoughts on this years version of the race. Mike Stefano and Katelyn Ritter are the hosts of the Obstacle Running Adventures podcast. Mike ran WTM for the first time this year and Katelyn pitted him all the way to 50 miles. Chris Wilkins and John Cheek came all the way from the UK to run World's Toughest Mudder. They have advice for international runners thinking about making the trip. Kenny Rotter ran 40 miles in the bitter cold this year and ran into Will Hicks multiple times over the weekend. He talks about how to take the Tough Mudder spirit into "real life" off the course. 0:00 Intro and Welcome 3:40 Spartan Ultra Championship Update 9:24 Jon Albon DNF Iceland 10:46 Ryan Atkins wins Iceland; Men's Podium 13:29 Morgan Mckay update 14:23 Hey kids. With World's Toughest Mudder only nine days away, this week's episode(s) are dedicated to Tough Mudder's pinnacle 24-hour event. From discussing the top competition, to tips, to the mindset needed to complete the grueling 24 hours, I brought in five experienced World's Toughest Mudder competitors to share their thoughts about this event. In Part two, I talk to Kris Mendoza, Will Hicks, and Amanda "Pinky" Neil. Kris is an elite OCR athlete who placed 3rd at World's Toughest Mudder in 2016 with 100 miles. Kris and I discuss the upcoming WTM move, he talks about his switch from a two-person team to a relay team and we talk about the relay format overall. We also chat about the community on the course, variety in OCR, and Kris shares how WTM got him launched into OCR, his biggest challenge at WTM, and how it felt to hit 100 miles last year. Will Hicks is a WTM veteran and expert, and the host of the World's Toughest Podcast. He's been following the Toughest competition closely leading up to World's Toughest Mudder, so we discuss the elite competition and his predictions for the top contenders. We also talk about the overall atmosphere of WTM, how to push past the dark moments out on the course, goals, and he shares some last-minute tips. Amanda "Pinky" Neil is a 4-time WTM veteran and a well-known figure in the community (and the first one to provide us with her version of puzzle pieces this year). We talk about all sorts of tips, from shoes to wetsuits to pit stops, as well as talk about how she got started with WTM, and she reminisces on past years. We also talk about the contender category, how WTM has changed over the years, and teamwork on the course.

Toughest Mudder Chicago Preview!   Eric Dymesich joins us to talk about his WTM experience and preview the Toughest Mudder Chicago course. Eric is new to the WTM community, with one World’s Toughest under his belt. He earned his 50 mile bib in his first trip to Lake Las Vegas. Eric talks about some tips on how to get the brown bib in your first attempt as well as talking about why World’s Toughest Mudder was such a meaningful event in his life.   Eric is an Iraq war veteran and he talks about how the camaraderie on the course at WTM is the closest thing he’s found to the military since he left the service.   Toughest Mudder Chicago will be a flat course, but a wet course. Not only will the obstacles have you in and out of the water, there is a river crossing, and a HIGH chance of rain during the event. Wet = Cold. Bring your wetsuits.   In addition to discussing the course, Will Hicks talks about the elites and who he expects to win. One dark horse: Amelia Boone. She hasn’t announced anything but Will thinks she’s going to make a surprise appearance to claim an Elite Contender spot and secure a shot at $50,000 in Vegas this November.   If you'd like to join the World’s Toughest Mudder Winner’s List and enter the contest for a free pair of Merrell Agility Peak Flex shoes email WorldsToughestPodcast@gmail.com with Merrell in the subject line and the following in the body: 1) Your Name 2) Your email address 3) Your cell phone number 4) Yes or No to the question "Would you like to receive updates from Merrell and World's Toughest Podcast   Who would you like to hear on the podcast? Heads up: Grown up language. Hide the kids. Will Hicks talks about the big Tough Mudder X news and who he expects to see compete and who he does NOT expect to see out there. Do you realize 18 months ago you had two choices for a Tough Mudder event? You could run Tough Mudder or you could run World’s Toughest Mudder. Will talks about all seven of the current Tough Mudder events. Then Keith Allen and Will Hicks talk about Toughest Mudder Philly, Matt B. Davis, and all these other people. Keith and Will talked before Will talked with Nolan and Eli of TMHQ last week. TMHQ told us that was a misunderstanding on the part of the volunteer and should not have been the case. They always want participants to help each other. It shouldn’t happen again. Keith’s pit food for Toughest Philly? 3 water bottle filled with Tailwind, Strawberries, Blueberries, and Pretzel M&M’s. Toughest Mudder Philly Recap! Toughest Mudder Philly was this past weekend. Trevor Cichosz and Allison Tai came away with the first place wins and 208 runners out of 717 (29%) qualified as contenders. Before we get into the Toughest Philly recap information Will talks about Ian Panter and the car accident he was in as he was leaving the Saturday morning Tough Mudder course. The local news station where Ian lives did a story on the accident and we listen to a clip from it. If you’d like to help Ian and his family with their medical expenses, a GoFundMe page has been set up. You can find a link to it at facebook.com/worldstoughestpod Kris Mendoza borrowed the World’s Toughest Microphone and talked to several people in Philly, pre-race. He spends some time talking with Trevor Cichosz, Lou Fisher, Stefanie Bishop, John Fagan, Jim “Da Goat” Campbell, Keith Allen, Joel Forsyth, and Melissa “Sharkbait” Dugan. Da Goat and Sharkbait are on this podcast as often as Will Hicks lately. As we start talking about Philly, we talk about the Philly results and stats, as well as discussing the Toughest Mudder series as a whole. Philly had 29% of the field qualify as contenders, Europe had 33%, Atlanta had 61%, and LA had 46%. Total contender numbers so far: 2,272 people have run Toughest Mudder. 885 have completed 25 miles. 39% have become contenders. Will then reads a few iTunes reviews (Have you left your review yet?) and reminds everyone how to enter to win a free pair of Merrell Agility Peak Flex trail running shoes from the World’s Toughest Podcast. If you want better odds, you can also win of a pair of the shoes from Amazon, but the entry fee is about $130. Once we go to the phones, we don’t come back. We have a conversation with Allison Tai, Kevin Given, Alex “Chikorita” Roudayna, Kevin “Bubbles” Gregory, Sara Knight, Jordan McDougal, and Stefanie Bishop. Allison Tai won first place at Toughest Philly. If you’d like to hear more from Allison, check out episode 17 of the World’s Toughest Podcast. Kevin Given ran Toughest Philly this weekend. You’ll recognize him on course in his straw cowboy hat. Chikorita won third place at Toughest Philly and has qualified as an Elite Contender three times. She will make some noise this year at World’s Toughest Mudder. Kevin Gregory has the nickname “Bubbles”. If you listen to his whole call with Will you’ll find out why. Sara Knight is one of two women (with Sharkbait) who have run every Toughest Mudder so far. She and Chad Trammell are the only two people to qualify as an Elite Contender in more than one country. Jordan McDougal won second place at Toughest Mudder Philly. He has a background in ultra-running. This is his first Toughest Mudder event. Stefanie Bishop is the reigning World’s Toughest Mudder. She needs no introduction. You introduce yourself to her. That’s not her job. This episode is almost two hours long. What do you think about that? Next time should we split it into two or three different episodes and put out a shorter episode each week? Or would you prefer to get as much information as you can, as soon as you can? Bonus episode of World’s Toughest Podcast! Last Minute Toughest Mudder Atlanta Edition! We start with a weather report for Toughest Mudder Atlanta. It’s going to be hot. 69 degrees at 12:00 midnight. The coldest it will get during the race is 60 degrees at 6:00am. No rain in the forecast but humidity will be between 20 and 25 percent for the eight hours. Jim Campbell ran Tougher Mudder this morning and talks about the course. Block Ness Monster is DEEP this time. Be careful guys. After we talk about the course we talk about the elite athletes running tonight and who to watch. Sean Corvelle was working the start line and was outstanding as always. We heard through the grapevine that TMHQ has added four additional dates to Sean’s schedule for 2017. Sean had a great line he doesn’t use all the time: “Tough Mudder does not build obstacles to hurt you. Any fool can do that. We create a course to challenge you.” We also talk to David Thanos about the course. He ran Tougher Mudder this morning. He also talks about the water depth at Block Ness Monster and the rule changes to Tougher Mudder. TMHQ has added penalty loops to Funky Monkey and Kong. If you fail either of those two obstacles you no longer have the option to retry the obstacle. You must take the penalty loop. However, even if you fail them, as long as you complete the penalty loop you will qualify for the Tougher Mudder headband. If you finish on the podium tonight at Toughest Mudder Atlanta be sure to find Will Hicks afterward for the World’s Toughest Continental Breakfast. We’ll talk about the race while you enjoy some fruit, carbs, and a chilled Starbucks Carmel Macchiato or a Throwback Mt. Dew (with Real Sugar!) He's easy to spot with his large orange hard hat and the music coming out of the boom box in his backpack. Drake talks about his successes at WTM, but also the challenges he had to overcome last year. We are fresh off the inaugural Toughest Mudder and we loved it. Will Hicks ran Tougher, Toughest, and Tough over the weekend in Los Angeles, and only regrets running two of those. The first half of this episode is chock full of audio from the media on site. Tough Mudder, CBS Sports, and Obstacle Racing Media were the only companies with media representation on site this weekend. Among the people we’ll hear from are Will Dean, Nolan Kombol, Ryan Atkins, Stephanie Bishop, Chad Trammell, and a few surprises. After the on-site audio, Will has a phone call with Josh Cox where they reminisce about the five miles they spent together over the weekend.
