Domestic Scandal In Sioux FallsJump To AD-FREE Safe House EditionEpisode 388 is not a classic trunk murder, per se, but one of the most dramatic scenes in the narrative comes when the prosecutor opens up a dead girl's trunk in front of witnesses to speculate on the abuses its contents portend. Two families are ripped apart in this gripping drama where evidence is thin but accusations are as abundant and brutal as the wounds on the poor girl's dead body.Hear More Episodes About TRUNK MURDERSBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/true-crime-historian--2909311/support.Join us at The Safe House, where every resident gets the key and safe combination to the dusty old vault where they listen to the largest collection of True Crime Historian episodes available in the entire universe, all ad-free.

A Hung Jury For Hazel CombsJump To The AD-FREE Safe House EditionEpisode 387 starts out conventionally enough: A woman murders her husband to collect the double indemnity insurance policy. But when after she cheats the hangman at the end of Act II, the story doesn't stop there. Because of the legal technicalities of the insurance she took out, a jury still has to determine whether or not she committed the crime in Act III.Hear More Episodes About FEMMES FATALEBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/true-crime-historian--2909311/support.Join us at The Safe House, where every resident gets the key and safe combination to the dusty old vault where they listen to the largest collection of True Crime Historian episodes available in the entire universe, all ad-free.
Coming October 15!!!The Work Of The Mormon ButcherEpisode 451 begins in the summer of 1902, when a woman's mutilated body is pulled from the Morris Canal, and the trail leads to a blood-soaked missionary's flat in Manhattan. The suspect: William Hooper Young, grandson of Mormon patriarch Brigham Young, whose notebook bore the chilling phrase “Blood Atonement.” This is a rich episode about the strange descent of a scholar turned tramp, and the murder that made headlines thunder with scandal, scripture, and slaughter.Available for advance ad-free listening now at The Safe House!Just a buck a week reserves your bunk at the Safe House and give you early access to all new episodes of True Crime Historian, plus full access to the dusty vault where you can listen to over 400 vintage episodes and whatever personal services you require.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/true-crime-historian--2909311/support.Join us at The Safe House, where every resident gets the key and safe combination to the dusty old vault where they listen to the largest collection of True Crime Historian episodes available in the entire universe, all ad-free.

The Vermont DesperadoAd-Free Safe House EditionEpisode 386 tells the epic story of one of New England's most persistent scoundrels. It's the kind of story I delight in finding, that in another context would make a great Elmore Leonard or Carl Hiaasen novel, this one about a slippery but dim-witted thief, that would almost be comic if there wasn't a tragic loss of life in Act II, and even when he gets his come-uppance in Act III, there's still a couple of strange twists in the tale. The Court Martial Of Pvt. Eddie LeonskiJump To The AD-FREE Safe House EditionEpisode 382 is dedicated to the Australian scoundrel Philip Quinn, a dedicated listener from Down Under who wanted to hear more about the case of Eddie Leonski, an American soldier who terrorized of Melbourne with a murder spree while the city was under mandated “brown-outs,” reductions in the use of lighting to make it less of a air raid target. The only good contemporary coverage of the case was during the trial, which was conducted by the American Army and not the local government, so you'll have to wait for the defense in Act III to learn the strange story behind the soldier's deadly impulse.Hear More Stories About SERIAL KILLERSBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/true-crime-historian--2909311/support.Join us at The Safe House, where every resident gets the key and safe combination to the dusty old vault where they listen to the largest collection of True Crime Historian episodes available in the entire universe, all ad-free.

Face-To-Face With Pretty Boy FloydAd-Free Safe House EditionThe centerpiece of Episode 378 is a quest for an interview with the infamous bank robber and murderer Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd by Oklahoma reporter Vivian Brown. Although her reporting verges on glorifying Floyd's celebrity, something we try to avoid, her six-part series published in the days between Floyd's death in Ohio and his home-town burial, she also provides a deep insight into the way citizens viewed Depression-era bandits as anti-establishment folk heroes. But let's not forget that Floyd murdered at least seven people, even if we don't count the Kansas City Massacre.Hear More Stories Where ROBBERIES GO AWRYBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/true-crime-historian--2909311/support.Join us at The Safe House, where every resident gets the key and safe combination to the dusty old vault where they listen to the largest collection of True Crime Historian episodes available in the entire universe, all ad-free.

Emil Sanger's Rage Ad-Free Safe House EditionLike all episodes of True Crime Historian, Episode 333 is a cautionary tale, this time about rage, when a normal businessman gets so heated about a squabble mixing family and business that he lays out his own ruin. Murder Of The Mythical Helen JohnsonAd-Free Safe House EditionEpisode 288 goes out to True Crime Historian patron Aisha B., who requested a murder from her hometown of Pleasanton, California. Although a lot of these historic stories have humorous elements when considered in modern light, I don't normally treat them as comedies. There may or may not be any actual murders in this one, but there are plenty of accusations and much ado about Mrs. Amador's allegations that makes it a comedy of errors that would make Shakespeare proud. Wait ‘til they get to the bones. Also, since this story came up a little shorter on time than most episodes, stay tuned after the credits for a bonus short short story.More Bad ConfessionsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/true-crime-historian--2909311/support.

Who Killed Lettie Whitehall?Ad-Free Safe House EditionEpisode 282 is dedicated to True Crime Historian patron Vivia Boe, who requested an episode from her hometown, Bothell, Washington. In scouring the archives, I found this tragic story that takes place in the vicinity. It's usually hard to get a full episode from an unsolved case as there's usually no resolution and a good story needs an ending. This one has a lot of middle, to be sure, as law enforcement thrashes around and blames every man in town for the poor girl's death. They finally charge a guy, but the evidence is thin. The Real ‘Chicago' MurdersEpisode 352 explores the two murders that inspired the hit musical “Chicago,” which was based on a play by Maurine Watkins, who did some reporting on both cases as a reporter for the Chicago Tribune. Susan will read about the case of Beulah Annan, who became Roxy Hart on stage. I will read the case of Belva Gaertner, who became Velma Kelly.Culled from the historic pages of the Chicago Tribune, the New York Daily News, and other newspapers of the era. This episode includes a reference to a fellow murderess Sabela Nitti, whose story you can hear about in True Crime Historian 230, The Ugly Duckling Murderess.
The Rosewood MassacrEpisode 284 is dedicated to True Crime Historian patron Mary Virginia Avery who lives near what used to be Rosewood, Florida, where the probably unfounded accusation of a black man for assaulting a white woman led to the destruction of the town and the banishment from Levy County of all of its citizens. Because incidents like this were numerous and under-reported, I've included accounts of some of the racial unrest in that area that researchers believe contributed to the rage that was exhibited that night, and also some passages from a report produced in 1993 based on interviews with survivors. Although I've edited the news reports to lighten the obvious racial bias, there are times when I felt it important to read them as written, so be aware that the language may be strong at times. History is not always pretty, and I don't think it endorses the racism of the day to bring it into light. I believe that all of my stories are cautionary tales, and it's too easy to see echoes of these events in modern America.Ad free edition
Two Twists on a Classic TaleEpisode 242 explores two versions of the same case by two true crime pioneers, the first by distinguished journalist Alfred Henry Lewis and the second by True Crime Historian favorite Edmund Pearson. The episode ends with an obituary of the interesting life of the defendant after she leaves Bond Street.Ad free version with subscription

A Terrible Reign of MurderEpisode 214 digs deep into the files of the FBI and one of its early successful investigations during the tenure of J.Edgar Hoover, when the Bureau of Investigations looked into the murder of as many as 60 to 70 Osage Indians. The file includes a report by Agent Frank Smith as well as statements by informants who helped break the conspiracy. True Crime Historian welcomes guest reader Susan Ferman as Katherine Cole, one of these informants.

The story of Marie Lafarge reads like a gothic novel. A well-bred, attractive woman living in a mansion in the country, married to a man she doesn't love, sounds like a tale we'd all like to read. And read, people did. Her case was one of the first trials to be followed by the public through newspapers. She was the first person to largely be convicted due to direct forensic and toxicology evidence.Music:“A Hoax” by Mary Riddle: https://www.epidemicsound.com/track/YgEoWTVfYv/Ghostpocalypse – 6 Crossing the Threshold by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/FabledCollective)
Encore EditionYESTERDAY’S NEWS -- Tales of classic scandals, scoundrels and scourges told through vintage newspaper accounts from the golden age of yellow journalism...Spooky Doings In Pennsylvania Dutch CountryEpisode 91 of True Crime Historian gives us a little lesson in the Pennsylvania Dutch Powwow mysticism traditions. Although it sounds like the Native American word for an inter-tribal gathering of dancing and feasting, the origins of the term in this context are obscure but refer to more European form of healing and the casting of spells — and hexes. In this story, a simple minded fellow named John Blymyer tries to rid himself and his friends of an evil curse. Yeah. YESTERDAY’S NEWS -- Tales of classic scandals, scoundrels and scourges told through vintage newspaper accounts from the golden age of yellow journalism...The City Of New Orleans Vs. The MafiaEpisode 408 explores the lead-in and aftermath of one of the most deadly vigilante actions in American history. When the commissioner of police is assassinated on his way home, a committee of 50 citizens call an indignation meeting, and you know how those are likely to go. Just a couple of notes: One, the descriptions of the action in Act III are quite graphic, so use your discretion. And two, there are several instances of a derogatory term used in this episode, but I follow the same policy I do for racial slurs, that I will soften the narrative language but will not change anything that is printed in direct quotes. History is not always pretty, folks, so don’t come here if you want it white-washed.***I want you to start living a happier life today. BetterHelp can be the way to find one.
