Learn how by mid-December, 1776, the American Revolution was in desperate straits. Explore that after a series of defeats, the American Army had retreated through New Jersey and was stationed in Pennsylvania — with the British Army across the Delaware River. The Continental Army was on the verge of utter collapse. Overconfident, the British went into Winter Quarters. Congress gave George Washington enormous authority, and Washington used the lull in fighting and his new power to reorganize and strengthen his troops. Washington and his officers designed a daring attack on Hessian forces in Trenton, New Jersey. Before the battle, Washington inspired the troops through the reading of Thomas Paine's American Crisis. Follow Washington's troops through the winter storm, the crossing of the nearly frozen Delaware River, an arduous march, and the pitched battle. The fate of the new nation depends on it. Through divine intervention, Washington was able to mount a surprise attack on the hated Hessian troops in Trenton, winning an improbable victory, which became a critical turning point in the war. Dr. Bill Nance joins me with some back history to help us better appreciate what we're talking about now, essentially explaining how we got the US Army we had in June 1944 going into Normandy. In the course of that discussion, there are topics of contemporary relevance too, such as Large Scale Combat Operations (LSCO), the Military Decision Making Process (MDMP), the impact of finite resources, and planning for what happens in week two. Several publications are mentioned so they are linked below, and Dr. Steve Waddell is also mentioned, the guest in the preceding episode. John is joined by Professor Song Sang-Hyun, retired Professor of Law at Seoul National University and former President of the International Criminal Court. Professor Song explains the origins of the Korean civil justice system which is based upon the German system by way of Japan. He discusses how after World War II, American Army officers drafted many of Korea's statutes and, in the past two decades, American law in fields such as corporate law, shipping and aviation law, antitrust law, securities regulations, intellectual property, and class action lawsuits have increasingly influenced Korean law. They then discuss Korean pretrial practice which does not involve voluminous document discovery or any depositions and often involves the trial judge also acting as a mediator. Professor Song explains some of the unique aspects of Korean trial practice including Korea's recent adoption of juries that render advisory decisions on disputed facts and that cases average less than a year from filing through trial. They also discuss that the loser must pay the winner's attorneys' fees, although, in practice, courts tend to award less than all the fees incurred. Finally, they discuss some of the emerging issues in Korean law including labor, environmental and privacy law as well as the protection of personal information.Podcast Link: Law-disrupted.fmHost: John B. March is Women's History Month, and as we are fond of reminding everyone, women's history is American history, and there's no better way to focus attention on that than by talking about some of our favorite "forgotten women" of our Founding Era. Join the Rebeccas as they discuss women notably absent from most of our history textbooks, like Deborah Read Franklin, as well as the brilliant enslaved poet Phillis Wheatley, the gifted playwright and essayist Mercy Otis Warren, and the first woman to fight in the infantry of the American Army, Debora Sampson, among other incredible women of this age. Nothing is impossible. (See YouTube link at the end.)After disclosure of the high-security documents about UFOS in the USA, it is proved there exist UFOS. This means intelligent beings from another Galaxy have visited the most stupid beings ever have lived, that are driven by greed and self-destruction; killing their own species with poison food and medicaments and through wars; destroying their own planet within a so short time… Yes, I mean human beings. 2003 was founded a top-secret intelligent service that should invest in UFOS.The nuclear military sides and most advanced military sides of the USA were observed from UFOS and that is proved to be 100%. There exist records of that. The pilots of the USA military sides tried their best to catch up with the UFOS and tried to destroy them…It was not possible, because the UFOS had been too fast (supersonic) and agile and the UFOS even knew, where are the most secret military bases of the USA are. The UFOS just confronted the American Army. And that happened in the last 50 years again and again… After every UFO confrontation on American Nuclear Military facilities in Australia; the USA- and Australian Intelligent service threatened the high creditable witnesses not to disclose anything. The same is true also in the USA, the intelligence service has threatened every creditable witness who had watched the UFOS.We have to live with that information, and I still believe that many UFO reports are wrong, but also some are true.If we sum up, the UFOS never have threatened us! But the American Nuclear sides are a huge threat to the entire world and so are the cold wars against Russia and China. We should live in peace instead to create again and again new enemies out of fabricated evidence and that is the threat and not the UFOS. Even there exist intelligence that is superior to humans, and that is not difficult…We should focus on the Lord and should not be distracted from aliens! Praise the Lord! Because everything is under the control of the Lord and no alien is superior to the Lord. So, I don't care for aliens, but I care for the stupid behavior of big nations that are threatening and killing people. In 1973 America ended a draft that had been in effect since before it entered the second World War, and for the last fifty years the US Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines have been an all-volunteer military. But, recently, of the four major branches which make up the US armed services, only the Marines have achieved their target for new recruits. And the biggest force, the Army, has been struggling most of all. In the past two years its missed its recruiting target by several thousand. In this edition of the Inquiry, Sandra Kanthal looks at the myriad reasons the American Army is failing to enlist enough new soldiers, and why this may affect what impact it can have on global security.Guests: Nora Bensahel – Professor of the Practice at the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University Mark Cancian - Senior Advisor at the Center for Strategic and International Studies Peter Feaver – Professor of Political Science and Public Policy, Duke University and author of Thanks For Your Service: The Causes and Consequences of Public Confidence in the US Military Beth Asch – Senior Economist, The Rand CorporationProduction Team: Presenter: Sandra Kanthal Producer: Sandra Kanthal Editor: Tara McDermott Technical Producer: James Beard Production Co-ordinator: Tim FernleyImage Credit: Bo ZaundersGetty

Patrick discusses retired Army officer Philip James Corso's fascinating story about confronting and pulling his gun on a living alien inside a cave in White Sands, New Mexico. The being told Corso "A new world, if you can take it." when Corso asked him "What's your offer?". Corso also provided drawings of the being. These comments were made on the Weaponized Podcast hosted by Jeremy Corbell and George Knapp. We take a look at the clip of Corso discussing this encounter, showing the drawings and discuss what it means. Who is Philip James Corso? Philip James Corso (May 22, 1915 – July 16, 1998) was an American Army officer. He served in the United States Army from February 23, 1942, to March 1, 1963,[1] and earned the rank of lieutenant colonel. Corso published The Day After Roswell in 1997, about his alleged involvement in the research of extraterrestrial technology recovered from the 1947 Roswell Incident. On July 23, 1997, he was a guest on the popular late-night radio show, Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell where he spoke live about his Roswell story.[2]

Jonathan Sandler's The English GI: World War II Graphic Memoir of a Yorkshire Schoolboy's Adventures in the United States and Europe, is an adaptation of his grandfather's 1994 war memoir. His grandfather, Bernard Sandler, was a British citizen of Latvian Jewish descent who served in the American Army. The book is illustrated by Brian Bicknell. The English GI sheds light into the experience of average people caught up in extraordinary circumstances. Jonathan Sandler's treatment of Bernard Sandler's memoir engages issues of diaspora, bravery, and fear. This graphic memoir also makes an important contribution to our understanding the complexity of Jewish identity. Jonathan Sandler studied Politics and History at Leicester University and has spent much of his career in the software industry, leading and managing complex projects. Jonathan, a keen sketcher, has always been passionate about World War Two history and graphic novels. In 2020, he combined these dual interests and commenced work on The English GI, which was published in 2022. Since then, Jonathan has maintained his passion for graphic novels and history by curating a blog on his website “Graphic Memoir”, spotlighting authors and books in the genre. Jonathan lives in London with his wife and three children, who are active members of North West London's Jewish Community. CW: Animal Death On June 5, 2023, The Debrief published an article titled “Intelligence Officials Say U.S. Has Retrieved Craft of Non Human Origins.” Written by Leslie Kean and Ralph Blumenthal, the article details claims brought forth by whistleblower David Grusch, a former Air Force officer and intelligence official, concerning documents he had been shown. And what was in these documents? Evidence of a crash recovery program responsible for retrieving alien spaceships that had embedded themselves into Earth's soil. In subsequent interviews, Grusch claimed that the Pope informed the American Army of a UFO that had crashed in Italy in the mid 1940s, that we've recovered alien bodies, and… that aliens have killed humans! Here's the thing… This is all old hat, and it was Grusch's claims that prompted the beginning of this series. All UFO conspiracies can be traced back to the 1980s. Before we get there, however, we need to take a trip back to 1967, to the mutilation heard round the world. The death of Lady, Nellie Lewis' prize horse, garnered national press attention, forever linking the phenomenon of livestock mutilation to UFOs. Trump is getting headlines (objections from Big Media) over his unusual suggestions, but maybe it's time for outside the box. From tariffs to bombing the cartels and beyond, Trump is always reliable to think outside the normal categories and get earned media off of it. November 4, 1791, was a black day in American history. General Arthur St. Clair's army had been ambushed by Native Americans in what is now western Ohio. In just three hours, St. Clair's force sustained the greatest loss ever inflicted on the United States Army by American Indians—a total nearly three times larger than what incurred in the more famous Custer fight of 1876. It was the greatest proportional loss by any American army in the nation's history. By the time this fighting ended, over six hundred corpses littered an area of about three and one half football fields laid end to end. Still more bodies were strewn along the primitive road used by hundreds of survivors as they ran for their lives with Native Americans in hot pursuit. It was a disaster of cataclysmic proportions for George Washington's first administration, which had been in office for only two years. Today's guest is Alan Gaff, author of Field of Corpses: Arthur St. Clair and the Death of the American Army. We look at the first great challenge of Washington's presidency, a humiliating defeat that the United States needed to strengthen its military or die. It's a war story that emphasizes individuals and small units rather than grandiose armies and famous generals, making St. Clair's defeat all the more immersive and personable.

Season three kicks off with a fiftieth anniversary celebration of Thomas Pynchon's postmodernist whirl-a-gig Gravity's Rainbow. Originally published on February 28, 1973, this encyclopedic inquiry into the systematicity of existence, power, and technology was just this week described by Esquire as "one of the weirdest, richest, most frustrating, inscrutable, brilliant, gorgeous, exhilarating, inexplicable, disgusting, hilarious, remarkable, and goddamn frustrating again novels ever published in America"---a novel so discombobulating, in fact, that the Pulitzer board refused to award it the fiction prize it assuredly deserved for its sheer display of ambition and erudition. Ostensibly about an American Army lieutenant, Tyrone Slothrop, whose sexual adventures in World War II-blasted London predict German V2 rocket bombings, Gravity's Rainbow encompasses so much more than a plot. With nearly 400 (often wackily named) characters and wild tangents into shadowy conspiracies hatched by secret organizations with names like ACHTUNG and PISCES, the narrative tries to find some natural humanism within the wide battery of political bureaucracies and regulatory bodies that administrate lives and minds. As we decide, Pychon's heart is always with the counterforce, with those who by letting their lives run counter to the machine transcend the inevitable rainbow's arc of precision that's meant to keep us all in our place and the trains running on time. Love it or hate it, Rainbow's Gravity feels like riding a rocket: we can only strap in and feel the G-force.

Last time we spoke about the grueling battle for Buna-Gona. The villages of Buna and Gona had been captured, but the Americans and Australians had a lot more ground to take before their job was done. By Christmas day American companies were marching upon the Buna government station while the Australians were marching in the direction of Giruwa. Then over on starvation island the situation was so dire for the Japanese, they had to perform a feint to draw the American Army's attention away from their coastal lines. They chose to mount a feint from Mount Austen to draw the Americans there and the feint worked. Now the Americans would be marching upon the Seahorse and Galloping horse to face the brutal defenses of the Gifu to claim Mount Austen's peak. But today we are going to venture back to the Burma front where a new offensive is commencing.
On this date in 1917, North Dakota Senator Porter J. McCumber announced that the Senate had passed his bill mandating the draft of alien residents. In today's episode, Ron Hirschberg talks with Said Noor, a proud Afghan American Army Veteran who first served for over eight years as an interpreter for the U.S. Army troops stationed near his village, before he was able to move to the U.S. on a special visa. A few years later, Said became a U.S. citizen, joined the U.S. Army, and redeployed back to the same area he had lived with his mom and eight siblings amidst many years of Taliban brutality, this time as a soldier. Said and Ron talk about Said's incredible story of service and his mission to fight the Taliban, his early years in Afghanistan, his time with the Army, and how in August 2021 he succeeded in his 20-year mission to keep his family safe. After months of advocacy, and with the help of MA Congressman Seth Moulton and in a small way football player Tom Brady, he was able to get his family on one of the last evacuation planes leaving Afghanistan, and safely to the U.S. ###THE ANNUAL RUN TO HOME BASE IS 7-30-22 THIS YEAR! Said takes us back to the time he first learned about the 9/11 attacks in the US. He was 11 years old, living with his mom and 8 siblings, all witnessing the Taliban beating his mom regularly, robbing her for money that was sent from dad who had been working in the UAE. Said was fascinated with the US troops who soon became fixtures in the community, and although they appeared as if they were from another planet, they treated his family with immediate kindness – while the Taliban who spoke his same language were wreaking havoc all around him. For years Said and family would watch Stallone's Rambo movies which would become his early lessons in the English language, and in 2007, Said officially became a translator for the US troops at age 17. In 2014, Said left for the United States on special Visa, and in 2017 he became a US citizen. Before long he enlisted in the US Army and by 2018 was translating for the troops back in Afghanistan. Said was now a proud Afghan American serving our country, and in 2020 after being honorably discharged from the Army he returned as a US citizen to the same village he first saw those troops 20 years prior. In 2021 Said had a new mission, to bring his whole family to the US – Not an easy task, even as a US Citizen and Army Veteran. His plea made it to Massachusetts Congressman Seth Moulton's desk, and along with creative planning by staff member Neesha Suarez, made the mission a reality – On August 27th, Said's family was instructed to enter the gates of the Kabul airport, get to a gas station and connect with a Marine to give the straight-out-of-Boston code word, “Tom Brady.”A household name like Tom Brady to us New Englanders may not have meant anything to Said's family at the time, but it's now unforgettable for them all. The Buccaneers brought Said and fellow comrade and Patriots fan Steve Morse to Tampa for a game, and Mr. Brady sent a personal message thanking US Army Veteran Said Noor for his service to our country. Said brings us deeper into his story of a kid that just wants his family to survive and thrive, and how in these times as we look to Ukraine, human suffering should never exist no matter what. Said is proud of the Afghan people, and of the US citizen and veteran he has become, and it's really an honor to bring this conversation to you. ###Follow Home Base on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedInThe Home Base Nation Team is Steve Monaco, Maureen Roderick, Laurie Gallagher, Karianne Kraus, Lucy Little, Taylor Orlando, with COO Michael Allard, Brigadier General Jack Hammond, and Peter Smyth.Producer and Host: Dr. Ron HirschbergProducer, Sound, Editor: Lucy LittleChairman, Home Base Media Lab: Peter SmythHome Base Nation is the official podcast of Home Base Program for Veterans and Military Families, a partnership of the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Red Sox Foundation. The American Army in Germany, 1918–1923: Success against the Odds (UP of Kansas, 2021) by Dean A. Nowowiejski fills a gap in American military and political history through thorough research and a compelling narrative of the Rhineland occupation. After the armistice ended the fighting on the Western Front in World War I, the Third US Army marched into the American occupation zone around the city of Koblenz, Germany, in December 1918. American forces remained there as part of an “inter-Allied” coalition until early 1923. Nowowiejski reintroduces us to a successful military-diplomat, Major General Henry T. Allen, who faced two major challenges: build an efficient army and handle the complexity of working with the Allied powers of France, Britain, and Belgium in the Inter-Allied Rhineland High Commission (IARHC). Allen's ability to balance the interests of the French with those of the occupied Germans made him an indispensable participant in the High Commission. As the French sought revenge and added security against Germany, Allen moderated their actions with diplomatic skill. When the French sent forces into Germany in 1920 and 1921, Allen ensured that the US zone around Koblenz remained free of French interference. These achievements were without the support of the administration, and Congress had no desire to take part in European affairs. Allen also had to create a competent American army in the Rhineland so that the Allied powers and the Germans would respect American views and interests. He successfully took a large number of new recruits, who replaced World War I combat veterans, and molded them into a professional fighting force. As a result, the American Forces in Germany became an exemplar for the entire US Army and a symbol to the Allies and Germans of American power and resolve. This force competently accomplished the difficult task of postwar occupation according to the highest international standards. The US administration made the decision in 1922 to radically cut back the size of Allen's army, and in 1923 to remove all US troops from Germany. The author analyzes this withdrawal as a “missed opportunity” for US leverage on diplomatic developments in Europe. Dean A. Nowowiejski is the Ike Skelton Distinguished Chair for the Art of War and director, Art of War Scholars Program, US Army Command and General Staff College. Alex Beckstrand is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Connecticut, a lecturer at Central Connecticut State University, and an officer in the Marine Corps Reserves. He works in the aerospace industry. Learn more about your ad choices.
